My parents went on a business trip and left my sister and me at home. I was reading a book while my sister was playing video games. Suddenly the doorbell rang. My sister rushed to the door thinking it was our parents.
Outside stood a tall man wearing a dark jacket. He said he was a delivery man and asked if our parents were home. Without thinking, my sister said, “No.” He then said he had a package for our parents. I quickly told him we were not allowed to accept any packages without our parents’ permission.
Then, as I was about to close the door, he pushed his way inside. He pulled out a knife and forced me to tie my sister’s hands with a rope he took from his pocket. I tied her hands but I did it in a special way. The man then tied my hands and locked us in the bathroom.
Soon, he went upstairs to search for valuables. I managed to teach my sister to untie the rope. She then untied me. I ran to the phone to call the police, but the line was dead. All the doors were locked from the outside and I didn’t have the keys. Luckily, the robber forgot to lock the bathroom window. My sister managed to get out through the window and I told her to run to the neighbour’s house and call for help. Soon, the police arrived and caught the robber.

Nowadays, short videos like those on Douyin are very popular among young people. A recent survey in a middle school showed that over 85% of students watch short videos regularly.
They give students a quick way to relax. “I watch short videos to kill time and learn some life hacks,” said Li Hua, 14, from a middle school in Shanghai. “I also share funny clips with my classmates.”
Teachers have also noticed this trend. “When I talk to students face to face, they may not open up. But on short video platforms, they are more active and even create their own content,” said Mr. Wang, a teacher from Beijing.
However, not all students use short videos just for fun. Zhang Mei, 13, from Guangzhou, uses them to learn English. She follows some foreign vloggers and watches their videos with subtitles. “I have to look up new words to understand them, which expands my vocabulary,” she said.
“Short videos can broaden students’ horizons, but there are rules to follow,” said Professor Liu from a famous university. He shares some of them with young users: “Manage your time well and don’t let short videos affect your study and sleep. Don’t share your personal information online. Also, respect the truth and others’ privacy.”

My favourite hobby
My favourite hobby is reading. I enjoy reading all kinds of books, especially adventure stories and science fiction.
I love reading for several reasons. First, it broadens my horizons and teaches me about different cultures and histories. Second, reading helps me relax and forget about stress after a busy day. Third, I can learn new words and improve my writing skills, which is helpful for my studies.
To balance my hobby with study, I set aside a fixed time for reading every evening, usually 30 minutes before bed. I never let reading interfere with my homework. I believe that a good hobby can enrich our lives without harming our responsibilities.
