An autonomous robot ran a half marathon in 50: 26, beating the human record by 7minutes.

Many people with high blood pressure are asked by doctors to eat less salt. This is good for their health, but it is not always easy. A Humanoid Robot Set a Half-Marathon Record in China
An autonomous robot ran a half marathon in 50: 26, beating the human record by 7minutes.
The star performer was a robot developed by the Chinese company Honor, which finished the 13.1-mile race in 50 minutes, 26 seconds. The human record, set by Ugandan Olympic medalist Jacob Kiplimo, is 57 minutes, 20 seconds. Honor’s robot was not the only participant. The event consisted of more than 100 humanoid (人形的) robots from 76 institutions across China. The robots lined up alongside 12,000 human runners in Beijing’s E-Town, on separate route to avoid accidents.
A humanoid robot is designed to copy the structure and movement of the human body, with legs, arms, and sensors that allow it to interact with its environment. In addition, many of the participating robots operated autonomously, meaning without direct human control. Thanks to artificial intelligence algorithms (算法), they could adjust their pace, maintain balance, and adapt to the land in real time. Obviously, the Honor robot that achieved the 50-minute mark operated autonomously.
As expected, there were some accidents in the race. Some robots fell down, others changed the path, and several needed technical assistance along the way. While the physical performance of humanoid robots has advanced rapidly, their reliability is still developing. Of course, the laughter is no longer as frequent as they used to be, replaced by applause and exclamations of surprise.
Just like the robots that went viral for their impressive martial arts display a few weeks ago, this long-distance race is part of a broader strategy by China to show its leadership in the development of advanced robots.

Imagine you’d like a pair of robotic arms fixed in your home simply to do one thing: fold clothes. How would it learn to do that? You could start by writing rules. Check the clothes to figure out how much force they can stand before being torn. Locate a shirt’s collar. Move the robotic hands to the left sleeve, lift it, and fold it inward by exactly the same distance. Repeat for the right sleeve. If the sleeve is twisted (扭曲), correct it. Very quickly the number of rules increases, but a complete accounting of them could produce dependable results. This was the original technology of robotics: expecting every possibility and programming it in advance.
Around 2015, the most advanced robots started to do things differently: A digital simulation (模拟) of the robotic arms and the clothes was built, and the program received a reward signal every time it folded a piece of clothing successfully. This way, it got better by trying all sorts of techniques, with millions of repetitions — the same way AI gets good at playing games.
Then the arrival of ChatGPT drove the further development in this field. Trained on large amounts of text, large language models (LLMs) worked not through repetitions and corrections, but by learning to guess what word should come next in a sentence. Similar models adapted to robotics were soon able to understand pictures, sensor readings, and the position of a robot’s joints and guess the next action the machine should take, sending dozens of motor commands (指令) every second.
This change seems to work, whether the robot is supposed to talk to people, move through a space, or even do difficult tasks. And it is paired with other ideas about how to achieve this new way of learning, even if they aren’t yet perfect, so they can learn from the environment they’re meant to work in.

Salt makes food taste better, and low-salt food often tastes boring. As a result, some people find it hard to keep a healthy diet for a long time. Now researchers in Japan have developed a pair of high-tech chopsticks that may help solve this problem.
The chopsticks were made by a team from Meiji University and a food company called Kirin. They are part of a small electronic device (装置), so they look a little different from common chopsticks. The device does not add real salt to the food. Instead, it makes people feel that the food tastes saltier. In the first test, people using the chopsticks felt that the food was about 1.5 times saltier than before.
How can chopsticks do this? The idea is not too difficult to understand. A very weak electric current(电流) goes from one chopstick to the mouth. It is so weak that people do not feel pain. The current changes the way salt in the food is felt by the tongue. As a result, low-salt food may taste more like normal food.
To check whether the chopsticks really worked, the researchers invited 36 people aged 40 to 65 to take part in a test. All of them were trying to eat less salt. They tasted food with normal chopsticks and with the high-tech chopsticks. The result showed that most of them tasted more salt when they used the new chopsticks. Some even thought low-salt food with the new chopsticks tasted saltier than common food with normal chopsticks.

A Humanoid Robot Set a Half-Marathon Record in China
An autonomous robot ran a half marathon in 50: 26, beating the human record by 7minutes.
The star performer was a robot developed by the Chinese company Honor, which finished the 13.1-mile race in 50 minutes, 26 seconds. The human record, set by Ugandan Olympic medalist Jacob Kiplimo, is 57 minutes, 20 seconds. Honor’s robot was not the only participant. The event consisted of more than 100 humanoid (人形的) robots from 76 institutions across China. The robots lined up alongside 12,000 human runners in Beijing’s E-Town, on separate route to avoid accidents.
A humanoid robot is designed to copy the structure and movement of the human body, with legs, arms, and sensors that allow it to interact with its environment. In addition, many of the participating robots operated autonomously, meaning without direct human control. Thanks to artificial intelligence algorithms (算法), they could adjust their pace, maintain balance, and adapt to the land in real time. Obviously, the Honor robot that achieved the 50-minute mark operated autonomously.
As expected, there were some accidents in the race. Some robots fell down, others changed the path, and several needed technical assistance along the way. While the physical performance of humanoid robots has advanced rapidly, their reliability is still developing. Of course, the laughter is no longer as frequent as they used to be, replaced by applause and exclamations of surprise.

Imagine you’d like a pair of robotic arms fixed in your home simply to do one thing: fold clothes. How would it learn to do that? You could start by writing rules. Check the clothes to figure out how much force they can stand before being torn. Locate a shirt’s collar. Then, the weather, Sheldon had assumed clear weather, turned out different from his forecasts. A light rain began to fall. Sheldon immediately covered the newspaper basket with the plastic he had prepared. This simple action prevented what could have been a real problem.
