We sometimes get questions like this, “How can I speak English with more confidence?” ___1___. No matter what language we are learning, we would all love to speak more confidently. So today, we have three pieces of advice to help you gain confidence in your English-speaking ability.
Use positive self-talk
Believe it or not, the most important person you talk to every day is yourself. In other words, it is your thoughts that really matter. So our first piece of advice is to use positive self-talk.
If you lack confidence as an English speaker, you may tell yourself things like, “___2___.” When you talk to other people, you may say things like, “I’m so sorry for my English.” But if you keep thinking and saying such things, you are sure to start believing them.
So the next time you are using your English, pay attention to what you tell yourself or others.___3___.
Don’t worry too much
One of the biggest barriers to confidence in speaking a second language is the constant worry about making mistakes. Understand that making mistakes is a natural part of the language learning process. Yes, you will make mistakes. ____4__. And many English learners communicate very well, even with mistakes. Mistakes can be a good thing. The more mistakes you make, the more progress you will make.
___5___
If your English-speaking skills are at the beginner or intermediate (中级的) level and you try to do something too difficult, you may fail. This can harm your confidence. But, if you do something that matches your level, you are more likely to do it well.
A. Set realistic goals
B. Build your confidence
C. That is a great question
D. English is too hard and I will never improve
E. It is important to practise speaking English every day
F. But the purpose of speaking a language is to communicate
G. Be sure to replace unhelpful thoughts or ideas with better ones

VI. 读后续写。
The summer holiday finally arrived. Twelve-year-old Lucas was wild with excitement at the thought of spending the coming two months at his grandparents’ country house.
Early in the morning, the car set off, packed with Lucas’s hiking essentials. He bounced (蹦) in the backseat, talking nonstop to his parents about all the fun he and Grandpa had planned last Christmas. He talked about the woods and the secret waterfall Grandpa had promised to explore with him.
At last, the familiar driveway came into view, leading to the old red farmhouse with colorful climbing roses. Grandma was standing at the gate, waving happily. Before the car even stopped, Lucas ran over to hug her tightly. Then he grabbed his backpack and ran through the door, shouting cheerfully, “Grandpa! Here I am!”
To Lucas’s astonishment, Grandpa was sitting in a wheelchair, his face looking pale and saliva (口水) streaming out of his mouth. A walking stick was leaning against the wall. Lucas froze on the spot, speechless. At the sight of Lucas in front of him, Grandpa struggled to stand up, but in vain. A painful expression appeared on his face. “Grandpa, how come? You were so strong and healthy!” Lucas said with tears in his eyes. Grandma explained that Grandpa had suffered a stroke (中风) three weeks earlier and had difficulty moving around. The doctor said exercise was a must for his recovery. But Grandpa couldn’t bear such a blow, feeling discouraged and depressed. He refused to exercise, thinking all this was of no use. Lucas’s heart sank.
After lunch, Lucas stood in the doorway, staring at the edge of the woods. Memories came flooding in. As a child, he often fell asleep on Grandpa’s broad and strong back as they headed home after their fun outing. When he learned to ride a bike, Grandpa always accompanied him, guiding him around until he made it. Grandpa’s encouraging words were ringing in his ears, “Don’t panic. Hold on and you’ll do better.” So Lucas was determined to do something for Grandpa.

VI. 读后续写。
The first thing was to encourage him to get back on his feet. Sitting beside Grandpa gently, Lucas shared their previous happy adventures in the woods and reminded him of their unfulfilled waterfall plan. He told Grandpa firmly that nothing was impossible with persistence. To cheer Grandpa up, Lucas accompanied him to do simple walking exercises every day. He held Grandpa’s arm tightly, patiently supporting him step by step and constantly giving him warm encouragement. Whenever Grandpa felt tired and wanted to give up, Lucas would comfort and motivate him.
Eventually, Grandpa was able to walk a long distance. Gradually, Grandpa regained his strength and confidence, no longer feeling depressed. One fine morning, they finally walked into the woods together. Bathed in soft sunshine, they enjoyed the fresh air and beautiful scenery. Grandpa wore a big smile on his face, expressing gratitude to Lucas. It was Lucas’s company and perseverance that helped him walk out of despair and regain hope for life.
