Real-life Task Scenario

Pre-reading
Task 1: Predict & Lead-in
Look at the title The art of having fun and use given expressions (e.g., have fun, feel youthful) to predict the passage’s main content; answer the question What's the writer's opinion about having fun? (For or against?) and make initial guesses.
Warming-up
Discuss the hypothetical scenario: staying on an island alone with only five things to take, list necessary items (food, water, etc.) and talk about the fifth fun thing to bring (books, football, etc.), then raise questions about the importance of having fun.
While-reading
Task 2: Analyze the Passage Structure
Read the whole passage and identify its three-part structure: Opening (situation + question), Reasons and supporting details (three benefits of fun), Conclusion (writer’s final opinion); figure out how the writer introduces the topic at the beginning.
Task 3: Comprehend Paragraph 1
Read Paragraph 1, choose the correct reason why people choose fun things as the fifth item, and fill in the blank to master the core content of the opening part.
Task 4: Summarize the Benefits of Fun
Read Paragraphs 2-4, count the writer’s mentioned benefits of fun and state each of them clearly.
Task 5: Complete the Detail Chart
Read Paragraphs 2-4 again, fill in the chart with words/expressions from the passage to match each benefit of fun with its supporting details; summarize the writer’s ways to support opinions (example, quotation, research).
Task 6: Judge True/False & Comprehend the Conclusion
Read Paragraph 5, judge two statements about the value of fun and work-play balance, fill in the blank with the core phrase, and choose the most suitable title for the passage.
Task 7: Answer the Extended Question
Analyze the writer’s use of the island example in Paragraph 1 and explain its role in expressing the importance of having fun.
Post-reading
Task 8: Think & Share
Discuss three thinking questions in groups:
The role of the island example;
Agreement/disagreement with George Bernard Shaw’s quote and reasons;
The implied meaning of No one is an island; learn the thinking method of questioning and verifying others’ words.
Task 9: Retell the Passage
Retell the whole passage according to the given mind map, following the opening-reasons-conclusion structure and covering all core details.
Assign after-class tasks: read the passage fluently, memorize key words/expressions, and share personal opinions about the importance of having fun as a challenge task.
