The Yungang Grottoes
The Yungang Grottoes are a really special place in Datong City, in Shanxi Province, China. They’re made up of old Buddhist caves and are one of China’s four famous grottoes.
About 1,500 years ago, people started carving these caves. Emperors and nobles from the Northern Wei Dynasty built them, hoping the Buddha statues would bring peace to the country and happiness to people. They worked on these carvings for about 150 years to make what we see today.
There are 45 main caves at Yungang, with more than 50,000 Buddha statues inside. These statues are all different sizes. Some are just a few inches tall, and the biggest one is 17 metres tall—that’s as tall as a building! The caves have paintings and sculptures that are very pretty and tell us about how people long ago lived and what they believed in.
Walking into the Yungang Grottoes is like walking into a big history book. Each cave is like a little room full of beautiful carvings on the walls and ceilings. These carvings tell stories about Buddha and show what everyday life was like back then.
The way the Yungang Grottoes are built is really cool. Most of the caves are carved into cliffs made of sandstone. Even though some caves are a bit worn out from the weather, they still look great and show how skilled the old craftsmen were.
It’s also super interesting that some of the caves have designs from places far away, like ancient India and Central Asia, and even some styles from ancient Greece and Rome. This shows that long ago, China was talking and sharing with many other big civilizations around the world.
Because the Yungang Grottoes are so important for their history, art, and culture, they were named a key protected site in China in 1961 and became a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001. The Yungang Grottoes are not just old places; they help us learn about ancient Chinese culture and art.
Read the text, and answer the following questions.
1. What is the basic introduction of the Yungang Grottoes?
2. Why did people of the Northern Wei Dynasty build the Yungang Grottoes?
3. What two important honors has the Yungang Grottoes received?

一、七选五阅读
What to Do After Achieving Your Goal?
When you first set yourself a large goal that you're working towards, it's easy for you to focus on that goal and finally achieve it. 1 Here are some things to be kept in mind:
Set that bigger goal.
The ambition of people is endless and deep down; you are always looking to achieve more.
2 Whatever the case may be, you want to be setting a larger goal than before. In many industries and aspects of your life, there is always room for some kind of expansion. So when you put your mind to it, you'll find that there are also other ambitions that you have.
Help others out.
3 Chances are you got involved in a community or group that helped you to achieve your results in some way. Since that group or community helped you, why not give back to those that helped you? Helping out the community in some way can help you stay true to your morals and ideals.
4
As the saying goes, “Don't put your eggs all in one basket.” It’s a fitting phrase in our lives as we all have many aspects—or baskets—in our lives. Along the same lines as the first suggestion, perhaps some of you spent so much time building up one basket that you ignored another. In that case, why not look at other baskets and give them the attention that they need?
Find yourself.
True last suggestion is to take some time for yourself. Pause, and aim to find yourself once more after this big step of success. As mentioned above, there are many aspects of ourselves, and if we focus on one part of ourselves, we weaken the identity of something else. 5
A. Look at other baskets.
B. Expand your successful goal.
C. But what comes next after you have achieved success?
D. It makes sense that after achieving a goal you go back to yourself.
E. What should you do if you want to make your goal different?
F. Instead of looking down at people, devote some of your energy to helping people out.
G. Achieving more doesn't always have to be in the form of money or high achievements.

三、读后续写
Eric was a little boy who was raised in an orphanage (孤儿院). He had always wished that he could fly like a bird. It was very difficult for him to understand why he could not fly. There were birds at the zoo that were much bigger than him, and they could fly.
“Why can’t I?” he thought. "Is there something wrong with me?" he wondered.
Jerry was another little boy who was crippled (瘸). He had always wished that he could walk and run like other kids.
“Why can’t I be like them?” he thought.
One afternoon Eric ran away from the orphanage. He came upon a park where he saw Jerry playing in the sandbox. Eric noticed that Jerry was crippled. He ran over to Jerry and asked him if he had ever wanted to fly like a bird.
“No,” said Jerry, “but I have wondered what it would be like to walk and run like other kids.”
“That is very sad,” said Eric, “but do you think we could be friends?”
“Sure,” Jerry said excitedly.
The two little boys played for hours. They made sand castles and made really funny sounds with their mouths. Sounds made them laugh really hard. Then Jerry’s father came with a wheelchair to pick him up. Eric instantly ran over to Jerry’s father and whispered something into his ear.
“That would be OK,” said Jerry’s father.

Never had they been so overjoyed that infectious laughter could be constantly heard. The light of the setting sun shone on the boys, witnessing the start of a new friendship.
