Maya Martinez, a high school senior living in a fog-covered coastal village in North California, noticed that the community garden was gradually drying up during the driest summer on record. While the villagers remained helpless, Maya chose to spend her afternoons carefully observing the thick mist that rolled in from the sea.
Maya had already identified a critical fault in traditional fog-collecting mesh nets (网状网): they frequently became blocked by the very water drops they caught, which severely reduced their effectiveness. Digging deeper into solutions, Maya found a novel device designed by two scientists — the “Fog Harp (竖琴)”.
Maya decided to use the handy materials to create her own “Fog Harp”. At first, neighbors watched the process with doubt as she strung hundreds of thin, upright wires across a solid wooden frame. To them, the setup looked no more than “a giant musical instrument” that only produced useless sounds in the cold coastal wind. Little did they know this simple-looking setup would soon prove surprisingly effective.
The remarkable efficiency of Maya’s Fog Harp lies in its clever use of gravity. In a traditional mesh net, tiny water drops get easily trapped within the small square gaps, which stop further collection. This occurs because the surface tension — the invisible, stretchy “skin” of liquid water — is too strong for the small drops to overcome. In Maya’s Fog Harp, by contrast, water drops hit the wires and slowly combine into larger drops. Most importantly, with no cross wires to hold these larger drops in place, gravity easily overcomes surface tension, allowing the water to slide effortlessly down the wires and collect in a tank below.
Of course, the project faced its share of setbacks. During one severe coastal storm, the extreme wind tore through the wooden frame. Yet, instead of giving in to despair, she immediately set out to fix the problem by reinforcing the entire structure with durable steel wires. By the time autumn arrived, Maya’s “Fog Harps” were reliably producing plenty of fresh water every day, partly meeting the daily water needs of the village.
4. Why did Maya observe the thick mist in her afternoons?
A. To predict the weather conditions.
B. To clarify the reasons for drought.
C. To check the efficiency of the mesh nets.
D. To work out a solution to water shortage.
5. What can we know about Maya’s “Fog Harp”?
A. It was a musical instrument. B. It invited villagers’ acid words.
C. It presented an inborn fault. D. It featured a solid metal frame.
6. What is the key for Maya’s Fog Harp to function well?
A. Its upright-wire design. B. Its mesh-net structure.
C. Its weak surface tension. D. Its resistance to gravity.
7. What can we learn from Maya’s story?
A. Look before you leap. B. Better late than never.
C. Think outside the box. D. Time waits for no man.
D 5. B 6. A 7. C

根据第一段“Maya Martinez, a high school senior living in a fog-covered coastal village in North California, noticed that the community garden was gradually drying up during the driest summer on record. While the villagers remained helpless, Maya chose to spend her afternoons carefully observing the thick mist that rolled in from the sea.(玛雅·马丁内斯是北加利福尼亚一个被雾笼罩的沿海村庄的一名高中生,她注意到在有记录以来最干旱的夏天,社区花园正在逐渐干涸。当村民们束手无策时,玛雅选择花下午的时间仔细观察从海上滚滚而来的浓雾)”可知,玛雅观察浓雾是为了找出解决缺水问题的方法。故选D项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“At first, neighbors watched the process with doubt as she strung hundreds of thin, upright wires across a solid wooden frame. To them, the setup looked no more than “a giant musical instrument” that only produced useless sounds in the cold coastal wind.(起初,当她在一块结实的木架上挂上数百根细长的竖线时,邻居们怀疑地看着这个过程。对他们来说,这个装置看起来不过是一把“巨大的乐器”,在寒冷的海风中只能发出无用的声音)”可知,邻居们对玛雅的“雾竖琴”持怀疑态度,甚至用酸言酸语来形容它。故选B项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“In Maya’s Fog Harp, by contrast, water drops hit the wires and slowly combine into larger drops. Most importantly, with no cross wires to hold these larger drops in place, gravity easily overcomes surface tension, allowing the water to slide effortlessly down the wires and collect in a tank below.(相比之下,在玛雅的雾竖琴中,水滴撞击电线,慢慢合并成更大的水滴。最重要的是,由于没有交叉的电线来固定这些较大的水滴,重力很容易克服表面张力,使水毫不费力地沿着电线滑下,并收集在下面的水箱中)”可知,玛雅的雾竖琴的关键在于其直立电线的设计,使得水滴能够顺利滑下并被收集。故选A项。
通读全文,结合第二段中“Maya had already identified a critical fault in traditional fog-collecting mesh nets (网状网): they frequently became blocked by the very water drops they caught, which severely reduced their effectiveness. Digging deeper into solutions, Maya found a novel device designed by two scientists — the “Fog Harp (竖琴)”.(玛雅已经发现了传统雾收集网的一个关键缺陷:它们经常被捕获的水滴堵塞,这严重降低了它们的有效性。深入挖掘解决方案后,玛雅发现了两位科学家设计的一种新型装置——“雾竖琴”)”可知,玛雅没有受传统方法的限制,而是通过观察和思考,发明了新的雾收集装置,这体现了“跳出常规思维”的精神。故选C项。

Urban green spaces, such as city parks and community gardens, are widely recognized for their role in improving air quality and relieving urban heat islands. However, a recent ecological research highlights their overlooked function in protecting urban biodiversity, which is crucial for maintaining the stability of urban ecosystems. But such hidden ecological value is rarely mentioned in city construction planning reports.
With the rapid expansion of cities, many wild species have lost their natural habitats and are forced to move to urban areas. Urban green spaces act as “ecological corridors” that connect isolated green patches, allowing animals to move, find food and mate safely. These spaces provide shelter and food for a variety of species, from birds and insects to small mammals, helping them survive in the man-made urban environment.
Researchers conducted a three-year survey in 50 urban green spaces across different cities. They found that green spaces with diverse native plants, rather than uniform foreign plants, host more species and form more complex ecological chains. Even small-scale green spaces, such as rooftop gardens and roadside flower beds, can make a significant difference in supporting urban biodiversity. Every tiny green plot serves as a safe mini habitat for vulnerable urban creatures.
Despite their importance, urban green spaces are often under threat from urban development and poor upkeep. Many cities prioritize large-scale construction work over green space protection, leading to the loss of valuable ecological habitats. In addition, few workers regularly water plants, or trim bushes or clear rubbish in city parks, which, consequently, causes too much waste to cover the lawns. Experts appeal that urban planning should give higher priority to building and protecting diverse green spaces, making cities not only suitable for human living but also friendly to all forms of life.
8. What is the newly discovered key function of urban green spaces in the passage?
A. Adjusting city climate by cutting temperatures in residential areas.
B. Cleaning air and reducing the bad influence of heat islands.
C. Protecting various living species in city environments.
D. Providing open public land for people’s daily relaxation.
9. What can we infer about isolated green patches without “ecological corridors”?
A. These lands can offer enough safe shelters for small mammals.
B. These lands cannot guarantee animals’ safe migration and breeding.
C. These lands are more likely to form complicated food chains.
D. These lands can take the place of big city parks for wildlife protection.
10. What conclusion can we draw from the three-year ecological study?
A. Single foreign plant types can support more wildlife varieties.
B. Small roof gardens have almost no good influence on biodiversity.
C. Growing different native plants helps form richer urban ecological systems.
D. Green lands in different cities create the same level of species diversity.
11. The word “upkeep” in the last paragraph most probably means .
A. mass unemployment B. daily maintenance
C. plant transplant work D. industrial production
C 9. B 10. C 11. B

根据原文第一段“However, a recent ecological research highlights their overlooked function in protecting urban biodiversity, which is crucial for maintaining the stability of urban ecosystems.(然而,近期一项生态学研究强调了城市绿地被忽视的功能——保护城市生物多样性,这一功能对维持城市生态系统的稳定至关重要。)”
根据原文第二段“Urban green spaces act as “ecological corridors” that connect isolated green patches, allowing animals to move, find food and mate safely.(城市绿地充当连接碎片化孤立绿地的“生态廊道”,让动物能够安全迁徙、觅食与繁衍。)”
根据原文第三段“They found that green spaces with diverse native plants, rather than uniform foreign plants, host more species and form more complex ecological chains.(他们发现,种植多样本土植物的绿地,而非种植单一外来植物的绿地,能容纳更多物种,形成更复杂的生态链。)”
根据原文最后一段“Despite their importance, urban green spaces are often under threat from urban development and poor upkeep.(尽管城市绿地意义重大,但它们时常遭受城市开发与upkeep不善带来的威胁。)”及“In addition, few workers regularly water plants, or trim bushes or clear rubbish in city parks, which, consequently, causes too much waste to cover the lawns.(此外,很少有工作人员定期给公园植物浇水、修剪灌木、清理垃圾,最终导致大量垃圾覆盖草坪。)”

Exams are nerve-racking, especially for those already of an anxious character. It seems barely surprising that those who worry about taking tests do systematically worse than those who do not. What is, perhaps, surprising, according to research published recently in Psychological Science by Maria Theobald, is that it is not the pressure of the exam hall but the pressure of revision that causes the problem.
Dr Theobald theorized that if anxiety was truly interfering with a student’s ability to transfer known information from brain to paper via pen, then those with high levels of it would perform worse in a real exam than in either a mock (模考) beforehand or during online practice sessions. Besides, she expected this performance-drop to correlate with levels of self-reported exam nerves.
She therefore worked with 309 German medical students who were preparing for their final state exam, the most important that they take. This test consists of 230 questions split into three five-hour sessions over three days.
All her volunteers sat a mock examination, clearly presented to them as such, 40 days before the real thing. To assess their levels of anxiety, they were asked, every day for 40 days in the run-up to the real exam and also on the day of that exam, to respond on a five-point scale to statements like, “I feel tense and nervous.” On the day of the mock they were similarly asked to rate statements like, “I worry whether I have studied enough.”
What Dr Theobald found was not what she expected. Anxiety on the day of test did not predict exam performance at all. What did predict it was the level of knowledge a student displayed in the mock exam and the earlier digital-learning activities. Those who performed well in these also did well in the real thing, regardless of how anxious they were on the day. What actually hampered students, it turned out, were high levels of anxiety during the weeks before the exam took place.
And this discovery is far-reaching, for it suggests a change of approach to revision by the anxious might help improve their results. Dr Theobald notes that test-anxiety is at its worst when students have low expectations of success and simultaneously (同时地) know that passing the exam is exceedingly important.
12. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?
A. The theoretical basis. B. The research result.
C. The testing assumption. D. The experimental process.
13. What can we infer from the research?
A. Anxiety before the exam brings better exam performance.
B. Anxiety before the exam restricts students’ ability in exams.
C. Anxiety on the day of the test predicts the result of the exam.
D. Anxiety on the day of the test intervenes in students’ ability in exams.
14. What is the author’s attitude toward Dr Theobald’s study?
A. Favorable. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Dismissive.
15. What will the following paragraph probably talk about according to the passage?
A. How to carry out revision plans scientifically.
B. How to reduce test-anxiety when reviewing.
C. How to get satisfying scores well in exams.
D. How to ease study pressure before tests.
C 13. B 14. A 15. B

根据第二段“Dr Theobald theorized that if anxiety was truly interfering with a student’s ability to transfer known information from brain to paper via pen, then those with high levels of it would perform worse in a real exam than in either a mock (模考) beforehand or during online practice sessions. Besides, she expected this performance-drop to correlate with levels of self-reported exam nerves.(西奥博尔德博士提出理论假设:如果焦虑确实会干扰学生将脑中已知知识通过笔书写到试卷上的能力,那么高度焦虑的学生在正式考试中的表现会比此前模考和线上练习时更差。此外,她推测这种成绩下滑会与学生自述的考试紧张程度相关)”可知,第二段主要介绍了研究者开展实验前的理论假设与猜想。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“What actually hampered students, it turned out, were high levels of anxiety during the weeks before the exam took place.(结果发现,真正阻碍学生发挥的是考试前数周的高度焦虑)”可知,考前的焦虑会限制学生的考试发挥、影响考试表现。
根据最后一段“And this discovery is far-reaching, for it suggests a change of approach to revision by the anxious might help improve their results.(这一发现意义深远,因为它表明焦虑的学生改变复习方式或许有助于提升成绩)”可知,作者认可这项研究的价值,对该研究持支持、赞同的态度。
根据最后一段“Dr Theobald notes that test-anxiety is at its worst when students have low expectations of success and simultaneously (同时地) know that passing the exam is exceedingly important.(西奥博尔德博士指出,当学生对考试成功的预期较低,同时又深知通过考试至关重要时,考试焦虑会达到顶峰)”可知,文章结尾落脚于备考阶段的考试焦虑问题,下文最有可能介绍复习时如何缓解考试焦虑。
Income relates to happiness up to a point, but the most enduring research tells a different story. The Harvard Adult Development Study, which has tracked participants for over 80 years, concludes that personal connections — not money — are the true key to fulfillment.
Still, the question remains: ____16____ The answer, as usual, is yes and no. To see why, it helps to look at the three broad ways people spend: on things, on experiences, and on becoming.
Things
Spending on things is always more complicated than it looks. On one hand, meeting basic needs doesn’t usually spark joy, but lacking them is a recipe for unhappiness. Wants, on the other hand, tempt us with the promise of fulfillment. ____17____ Soon after, we return to our baseline.
Experiences
____18____ Spending on experiences consistently delivers more moment-to-moment happiness than buying material goods, and the benefit lingers across anticipation, participation and memory. But here too, declining returns creep in. A single luxury trip can feel extraordinary, but repeat it constantly and the sparkle fades. In the end, experiences, like things, lose their impact.
Becoming
The fading sparkle of things and experiences brings us to the most overlooked and most powerful use of money: spending to become. When you direct resources toward becoming a fuller, more intentional version of yourself, you’re not just chasing pleasure — you’re investing in growth. If you love writing, you might hire a coach. ____19____ When spending fuels purpose and passions, it naturally draws others to you.
The Secret
Becoming doesn’t require vast sums of money. Growth often begins with small, inexpensive steps. Earning more money does not guarantee happiness. Spending on things and even experiences can offer momentary boosts, but their impact tends to fade. ____20____
A. Can we spend our ways to happiness?
B. Does higher spending lead to greater happiness?
C. Experience without reflection is just information.
D. The most enduring form of spending is on becoming.
E. Better than things at bringing lasting joy are experiences.
F. It’s about enhancing yourself rather than merely acquiring things.
G. Yet material purchases give us only a short-term burst of delight.
A 17. G 18. E 19. F 20. D

由前文“The Harvard Adult Development Study, which has tracked participants for over 80 years, concludes that personal connections — not money — are the true key to fulfillment.Still, the question remains:(哈佛成人发展研究对参与者进行了80多年的追踪,结论是人际关系——而非金钱——才是获得满足感的真正关键。尽管如此,问题依然存在:)”以及后文“The answer, as usual, is yes and no. To see why, it helps to look at the three broad ways people spend: on things, on experiences, and on becoming.(答案一如既往地是肯定的,也是否定的。要理解原因,不妨看看人们消费的三大方式:实物商品消费、体验消费和自我成长型消费。)”可知,前文引出了金钱与幸福的关系话题,后文给出了对应回答,本空要提出关于消费与幸福的核心问题。选项A表示“我们能通过消费获得幸福吗?”,能承上启下,符合题意。
【17题详解】
由前文“Wants, on the other hand, tempt us with the promise of fulfillment.(另一方面,欲望以带来满足感的承诺诱惑着我们。)”以及后文“Soon after, we return to our baseline.(不久之后,我们就回到了基准线。)”
由后文“Spending on experiences consistently delivers more moment-to-moment happiness than buying material goods, and the benefit lingers across anticipation, participation and memory. But here too, declining returns creep in. A single luxury trip can feel extraordinary, but repeat it constantly and the sparkle fades. In the end, experiences, like things, lose their impact.(把钱花在体验上,持续带来更多即时的快乐,胜过购买实物,并且这份益处会延续在期待、参与和回忆各个阶段。
由前文“When you direct resources toward becoming a fuller, more intentional version of yourself, you’re not just chasing pleasure — you’re investing in growth. If you love writing, you might hire a coach.(当你将资源投入到成为一个更充实、更有目标的自己时,你不仅仅是在追求快乐——你是在投资成长。如果你热爱写作,你可以聘请一位辅导教师。)”以及后文“When spending fuels purpose and passions, it naturally draws others to you.(当消费为目标和热情提供动力时,它自然会吸引他人来到你身边。)”
由前文“Spending on things and even experiences can offer momentary boosts, but their impact tends to fade.(购置实物商品、体验消费仅能短暂提升幸福感,但二者带来的愉悦感往往会慢慢消退。)”

My grandfather, a retired carpenter with rough yet deft (灵巧的) hands, had been utterly obsessed with carving delicate wooden handicrafts ever since his early adulthood. Back in my childhood, I would crouch quietly beside his worn wooden workbench, gazing attentively as he meticulously (细致地) cut, polished and carved solid wood with professional tools. Every time, he would spare no effort to craft delicate little wooden toys for me, turning plain wood into vivid artworks with his exceptional craftsmanship.
As I was promoted to senior three, the increasingly heavy academic burden completely occupied my daily life. I barely spared any time to accompany my grandfather, let alone sit beside him to appreciate his woodcarving creations. Buried endlessly in piles of textbooks, exercise books and endless homework, I even grew impatient and irritable whenever he approached me softly, urging me to take a break or sip a cup of warm milk.
Last month, grandfather was struck down by a sudden illness and confined to bed for a long period. The doctor stressed that he had been overworked mentally and physically, crying for adequate rest and careful nursing. One afternoon, I finished all my homework ahead of schedule and stepped into his study, which used to be filled with the faint, warm scent of wood. To my bitter disappointment, the once tidy workbench was covered with thick dust, and all his well-kept woodworking tools were neatly stored away in silence.
On the corner of the dusty workbench lay a half-finished delicate wooden jewelry box, which he had secretly planned to craft as a unique birthday gift for me. Unfortunately, his sudden illness forced him to put down the tools and pause the carving work.
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

With a smile written on his face, he agreed to help me with it.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1: Looking at the unfinished box, I was suddenly lost and rooted to the ground. I felt a strong sense of guilt, regretting my cold attitude towards him these days. I walked quietly to grandfather’s bedroom to visit him. His eyes were closed gently, and his face looked much paler than before, which made my heart twist with deeper guilt. I held his wrinkled hand carefully, feeling the rough touch that had made countless delicate wooden works for me. Sensing my presence, grandfather opened his eyes slowly, forcing a warm smile without any sign of blame. He whispered softly that he hadn’t meant to disturb my busy homework time, just hoping I could stay relaxed. Tears blurred my eyes instantly, and I apologized sincerely for my cold attitude, promising to spend more time with him and urging that I manage the box myself.
Paragraph 2: With a smile written on his face, he agreed to help me with it. The next day, I followed my decision to finish the wooden box. I pushed his wheelchair to the warm study and sat beside the dusty workbench, holding the half-finished gift carefully. Under his patient guidance, I tried to polish the wood gently, just like he used to do. Grandfather told me the details of carving with a bright smile, and the whole room was filled with warm wood scent again. It took us two days to complete the wooden box, but what I gained was far more than a delicate gift — it was the precious warmth of family and the true meaning of accompanying our loved ones.

C
D
