The Natural History Museum in London holds a yearly contest for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. There’s a separate contest for people aged 10 and under, 11-14, and 15-17, known as the “Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year”. Here are some of this year’s best winning pictures.
Free as a Bird by Alberto Román Gómez, Spain
Alberto Román Gómez snapped this picture of a young stonechat (野翁鸟) sitting on a gate hunting for insects. The judges liked how Alberto captured the bird’s wild nature while showing it in a human setting.
An Evening Meal by Parham Pourahmad, USA
Parham Pourahmad shot this picture of a Cooper’s eagle eating a squirrel (松鼠) that it has caught. The judges were impressed with the way Parham Pourahmad framed the picture, and the way the sunlight lit the scene.
Life Under Dead Wood by Alexis Tinker-Tsavalas, Germany
Alexis Tinker-Tsavalas created this image of a springtail (弹尾虫) next to the “fruiting body” of a mushroom. Alexis had to be quick, since the springtail could jump at any moment. Still, he managed to take 36 pictures that he later combined to create this image.
Recording by Hand by Liwia Pawlowska, Poland
Liwia Pawlowska won by her picture of a common whitethroat (白喉雀) being gently held while it is banded. When a bird is banded, a small ring is put on one of its legs. In the process scientists can learn about the bird’s size, health, age, and its migrations and then release it. Liwia Pawlowska hopes her picture will help “others to get to know this topic better”.

A. He took pictures very quickly.
B. He combined nature with human.
C. His photo called for wildlife conservation.
D. His composition and light were excellent.
22. What challenge did Alexis Tinker-Tsavalas face while taking his picture?
A. Holding the springtail gently.
B. Getting the lighting just right.
C. Photographing the springtail ready to jump.

23. What does Liwia Pawlowska expect her photo to do?
A. Educate viewers about bird’s banding.
B. Present the beauty of migratory birds.
C. Lead viewers to criticize bird’s banding.
D. Encourage protection of wildlife habitats.

Moments before heading to teach a class, I received a call from my sister: My mother was going into emergency surgery and might not make it through the night. Five minutes later, I stepped in front of 68 MBA students to lecture without missing a beat, and even stayed a few minutes after to answer questions. I held strong until. I got in the car to drive home. That’s when I fell to pieces. I fought to see the road through my tears as I spoke with my travel agent to book the next flight out. My mother pulled through the surgery.
My response to my mother’s crisis was in line with my deep, long-term fear of showing weakness or admitting to feeling overwhelmed. As the youngest daughter from a Vietnamese refugee family, showcasing my strength seemed the best way to honor my parents’ and siblings’ acrifices that have given me a better life in the United States. I did not want colleagues to question my capabilities or friends and family to see me as anything less than unshakable.
The truth was, I desired to pause, to catch my breath, to simply say, “I’m struggling.” I longed to be weak. I wanted to acknowledge my mistakes, to honor a range of emotions, and to ask for help. Cautiously, I began to reveal some of my struggles to my personal and professional circles, watching closely for reactions. Some looked down on my experience. To my great relief, a few listened without judgment and respected my boundaries and coping process. They offered information about counseling services, legal help, support groups, and hotlines. They helped me see that even professionals in leadership positions can need support.
To anyone bearing the weight of constant strength, hear this: True strength isn’t about never hesitating. It’s about having the courage to admit when we’re struggling, reaching out for support, and having the strength to piece ourselves back together and move on.
24. What did the author do after hanging up the phone?
A. She drove to look after her mother. B. She quickly booked a flight ticket.
C. She hesitated to start her teaching. D. She kept calm and stayed on duty.
25. Why did the author showcase her strength?
A. To help her mother make a full recovery. B. To prove she lived a good and happy life.
C. To avoid possible doubts over her abilities. D. To give herself an advantage in promotion.
26. How did some people help the author?
A. By persuading her to win leaders’ support. B. By convincing her seeking help is a must.
C. By listening to her and giving judgments. D. By sharing similar experiences with her.
27. What does the author want to convey in the text?
A. Strength does not mean hiding struggles. B. Strength gives us more courage to grow.
C. Comparing yourself with others is harmful. D. Worldly labels block personal development.
C
Art can have incredible power over us. Yet even the most timeless and celebrated pieces can be ruined by the march of the centuries. Turning back the clock can be complicated — scientifically and culturally. It requires a set of skills ranging from archaeology to chemistry.
Conservation starts with material analysis, whether the artwork is a cloth, sculpture, or painting. One approach was to remove a tiny piece of paint from an artwork to analyze layers of paint and see how the artist originally constructed it. But, increasingly, art conservation scientists have been able to adopt technologies to make the analysis process less intrusive. They often borrow these technologies from other fields, notably the medical field. CT scanning, for instance, can help doctors peer into bodies, but it can also help art conservation experts find tiny details in artworks, such as fingerprints and tool marks that they couldn’t see with the naked eye — without damaging the work itself.
Although more high-tech could be a blessing to the field, what art conservation scientists really long for is more cooperation between scientists, native experts, affected communities and the general public. They have re-centered their focus from just what a piece of art is made of and how to keep it in shape to the culture from which the artwork originated. “We’re still very much science-based, but we’ve also come to realize over time that these objects in our care have values rooted in them,” says Glenn Wharton, Chair of the UCLA Program in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage. “We always try to assess these values, which leads us towards communicating with people whose cultural heritage it is.”
Like many other things in art, what gets conserved and what doesn’t usually comes down to time and money. The number of restoration projects is far more than the availability of qualified scientists in the field. And historically, it has often been the most valued works owned by the wealthy that were restored. But with the evolving field, this is changing.
28. What can “turning back the clock” refer to in paragraph 1?
A. Admiring a timeless artwork.
B. Restoring an ancient masterpiece.
C. Creating a copy of a celebrated sculpture.
D. Studying the history of a famous painting.
29. What does the underlined word “intrusive” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Destructive. B. Defensive.
C. Intensive. D. Inclusive
30. What have conservation experts primarily shifted their focus to?
A. Modern technologies for restoration.
B. The composition of artistic materials.
C. Artworks’ cultural origins and values.
D. Artworks’ physical shapes and colors.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Conserved heritage.
B. Practical challenges.
C. Historical achievements.
D. Sufficient resources.

People have been trying to create glowing (发光) plants for decades. The challenge is making the glow bright enough for our eyes to see. Last year, US biotech company Light Bio launched the Firefly Petunia, the first genetically engineered glowing plant to go on sale. It claims that the plant’s brightness is “similar to moonlight,” but judging from photos on social media, it’s nowhere near as bright as a full moon.
There is a reason why this is so difficult. Plants get their energy from light, but photosynthesis (光合作用) is wildly inefficient. It’s estimated that most plants capture less than 2 percent of the light that falls on them, and they need part of it to survive and grow. That leaves precious little to transform back into light.
Given this fact, plants will never glow bright enough to take the place of streetlights. To solve this, a few groups have instead been trying to physically add phosphors (磷光体), a type of light-storing material that glows in the dark, to adult plants, which are much more efficient than photosynthesis. The problem is getting the phosphor chemicals evenly distributed inside the leaves. But now it’s found that such distribution is easily achieved in certain plants, so brightly phosphorescent plants of various colors are created by adding phosphors into each leaf by hand.
However, making plants glow by physically adding phosphors into them is considered “cheating.” At the very least, the glow will become weaker if these plants survive and grow larger. There is also a potential environmental concern when the plants die and are thrown out.
If the plants were genetically engineered to make their own long-lasting phosphors that are fully biodegradable, it would be a different story. In fact, giving plants this ability might even boost the efficiency of photosynthesis. Being able to temporarily “store” light could help keep the light steady, transform unusable wavelengths into usable ones, and allow photosynthesis to continue into the night. One day, perhaps entire fields will glow in the dark.
32. What makes it hard for plants to glow brightly?
A. The low light-use efficiency of photosynthesis.
B. Plants need most captured light to survive and grow.
C. Photosynthesis transforms only part of sunlight into usable energy.
D. Plants’ leaves cannot store enough light.
33. How do some groups improve the brightness of the plants?
A. By adding phosphors into the leaves.
B. By using adult plants that are more efficient than seedlings.
C. By manually adjusting light conditions.
D. By distributing chemicals evenly inside the leaves.
34. What can we learn about phosphorescent plants from the passage?
A. They need careful light management.
B. Their glow fade over time.
C. They can cause environmental pollution.
D. They are less bright than expected.
35. What’s the function of the last paragraph?
A. To discuss the difficulties of making plants glow.
B. To explore potential future applications of glowing plants.
C. To explain current experiments with glowing plants.
D. To highlight environmental concerns of glowing plants.

An urgent call came into Ryan’s bar this past March. A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at the dive beach bar in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, couldn’t find her wallet. She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash—but her wedding ring was put inside.
Ryan, 42, didn’t like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place, Ryan’s at Red Dogs. The bar had long served as a sanctuary for the homeless, offering not only hot meals but also job opportunities. In fact, half of his current staff were former homeless individuals to whom he had given a second chance. So he set out to find the wallet.
He spent hours checking recordings from 16 different security cameras, watching the woman’s every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Within minutes, a young man in a jacket approached the bench, touched something in his pocket, and walked off. That night Ryan posted a video clip on the bar’s Facebook page.
Instead of exposing the young man’s face to shame him, Ryan chose to post with a question: “Does anyone know this person?”
Within hours, Ryan got a text from 17-year-old Jimmy, who’d heard about the post from his sister. Jimmy admitted having taken the wallet and told Ryan he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet off the docks into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.
During their phone conversation, Jimmy opened up about his family conflicts and confessed to living in the woods for the past week. Though unable to see the young man directly, Ryan—a father of two with a third child on the way—pieced together Jimmy’s situation from his trembling voice and fragmented explanations.
“This isn’t some hardened criminal,” he insisted. But with the missing ring involved, the situation had become serious: the police investigation could lead to criminal accusations. Determined to help, Ryan vowed to protect the young man who seemed more of a kid than a lawbreaker.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
The next morning, Ryan told the teen to meet him at the docks.

W: Why do you ask?
M: You just haven’t posted any new pictures on your social media accounts lately.
W: Well, I can’t draw much at the moment because I need a new stylus.
M: What’s a stylus?
W: A special digital pen. I generally draw on my iPad, but my little brother broke my stylus.
M: Oh, no! Really? That’s not like Finn! Was it an accident?
W: Yeah. He was pretty upset about it. My parents have bought me a new one, and he’s doing housework to repay them.
M: Well, that’s good.
W: Yeah. But it won’t arrive for a while. I wanted a particular model from China, and shipping to America takes over a week.
M: I see. Can you just draw with a pen and paper while you wait?
W: I can, but it’s harder to upload the images to social media. I tried to teach myself how to use a drawing program on the computer, but I couldn’t get used to it soon.
M: Never mind. You’ll get your new stylus soon.
W: Yeah, I can’t wait! I took loads of pictures on my holiday in France, and I want to draw them!

B 18. C 19. B 20. A
M: Shinichi Sakamoto is 57 and works for Shimizu, one of Japan’s biggest construction companies. He is part of the greying and falling workforce. According to Mr. Sakamoto, statistics showed that a third of Japanese construction laborers are over 54 years old, and they are considering retiring soon. However, they’re not being replaced by younger builders. “The number of laborers under 30 is just above 10%,” he said. In September, Mr. Sakamoto’s firm gained a promising new co-worker — a robot. It is currently working on a high-rise development in Osaka, transporting heavy building materials every night from the ground floor to where they’re needed. “Can you imagine that materials are in the right position in the morning when laborers come to the site?” said Mr. Sakamoto. Robots will benefit from superfast 5G mobile networks. Better connections will make it easier for multiple robots to cooperate. Many small robots could work together on different parts of a task. An example is the 3D printing robots at a university in Singapore, each of which can print concrete following a computer map. Mr. Sakamoto also introduced other robot workers. The robots operate on their own, performing tasks a manager assigns them on a computer.

D 25. C 26. B 27. A

B 29. A 30. C 31. B

根据第一段中“Yet even the most timeless and celebrated pieces can be ruined by the march of the centuries. Turning back the clock can be complicated — scientifically and culturally. It requires a set of skills ranging from archaeology to chemistry.(然而,即使是最不朽、最负盛名的作品,也会因几个世纪的流逝而损毁。让时光倒流在科学和文化上都可能非常复杂。它需要从考古学到化学等一系列技能)”可知,“Turning back the clock(让时光倒流)”指的是对抗岁月侵蚀、修复受损艺术品的行为,与B选项“Restoring an ancient masterpiece.”语义一致。故选B项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“One approach was to remove a tiny piece of paint from an artwork to analyze layers of paint and see how the artist originally constructed it. But, increasingly, art conservation scientists have been able to adopt technologies to make the analysis process less intrusive.(一种方法是从艺术品上取下一小块颜料来分析颜料层,了解艺术家最初是如何创作的。但如今,艺术保护科学家已能够采用技术,使分析过程变得不那么intrusive)”以及后文“CT scanning, for instance, can help doctors peer into bodies, but it can also help art conservation experts find tiny details in artworks, such as fingerprints and tool marks that they couldn’t see with the naked eye — without damaging the work itself.(例如,CT扫描能帮助医生透视人体,同样也能帮助艺术修复专家发现画作中肉眼无法辨识的微小细节——如指纹或工具痕迹——且不会对作品本身造成任何损伤)”可知,“取下一小块颜料”是一种侵入式、会对原作造成破坏的手段,而新技术(如CT扫描)则避免了这种破坏。 故选A项。
根据第三段中“They have re-centered their focus from just what a piece of art is made of and how to keep it in shape to the culture from which the artwork originated.(他们已将关注的重点,从一件艺术品由什么材料制成、如何保持其形态,重新聚焦到艺术品所源自的文化上)”以及““We’re still very much science-based, but we’ve also come to realize over time that these objects in our care have values rooted in them,” says Glenn Wharton, Chair of the UCLA Program in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage. “We always try to assess these values, which leads us towards communicating with people whose cultural heritage it is.”(加州大学洛杉矶分校文化遗产保护项目主席格伦·沃顿说:“我们仍然非常以科学为基础,但随着时间的推移,我们也逐渐意识到,我们照管的这些物品中根植着价值。我们始终尝试评估这些价值,这引导我们去与那些文化遗产的所有者进行沟通。”)”可知,保护专家的关注重点已转向艺术作品的文化起源与内在价值。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Like many other things in art, what gets conserved and what doesn’t usually comes down to time and money. The number of restoration projects is far more than the availability of qualified scientists in the field. And historically, it has often been the most valued works owned by the wealthy that were restored. But with the evolving field, this is changing.(和艺术界的许多其他事情一样,哪些能得到保护,哪些不能得到保护,通常取决于时间和金钱。修复项目的数量远远超过了该领域合格科学家的数量。从历史上看,得到修复的往往是有钱人拥有的最有价值的作品。但随着这个领域的不断发展,这种情况正在改变)”可知,本段主要讨论艺术保护修复领域面临的现实制约,包括资金不足、人才短缺、资源分配不均等问题。B选项“Practical challenges.(现实挑战)”准确概括了本段主旨。故选B项。
D
A 33. A 34. B 35. B
根据第二段中的“Plants get their energy from light, but photosynthesis (光合作用) is wildly inefficient. It’s estimated that most plants capture less than 2 percent of the light that falls on them, and they need part of it to survive and grow. That leaves precious little to transform back into light.(植物的能量来源于光,但光合作用的效率极低。据估计,大多数植物只能吸收照射在它们身上的光能的不到2%,它们需要其中的一部分来生存和生长。这就使得能够重新转化为光能的量少之又少。)”可知,植物难以发出明亮光芒的原因是光合作用效率极低,植物捕获光能少,并且需要将部分捕获的光能用于自身的生存和生长,导致没有足够的能量用于发光。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“To solve this, a few groups have instead been trying to physically add phosphors (磷光体), a type of light-storing material that glows in the dark, to adult plants, which are much more efficient than photosynthesis.(为了解决这个问题,一些研究小组转而尝试在成熟植物上直接添加磷光体,这是一种能在黑暗中发光的储光材料,磷光体比光合作用更为高效。)”
根据第四段中“At the very least, the glow will become weaker if these plants survive and grow larger.(至少,如果这些植物存活下来并长得更大,发光会变得更弱。)” 原文只是说“There is also a potential environmental concern(存在潜在的环境担忧)”,并没有确定会造成环境污染,C项的表述太绝对。
根据最后一段中“If the plants were genetically engineered to make their own long-lasting phosphors that are fully biodegradable, it would be a different story. In fact, giving plants this ability might even boost the efficiency of photosynthesis.
What is personality? How does knowledge about personality help us? ____36____ In general, when psychologists talk about personality, they are usually looking for things that make a person different from others or things that can explain how a person is not the same as others. Psychologists often use tests to put people in categories and compare them to explain what personality is. For example, people who are quiet and like to spend more time at home reading and doing their own things are called introverts Others who enjoy going out and spending time with other people are called extroverts. ____37____ Are you an introvert or extrovert?
Second, how can knowledge of personality help us? Well, one of the ways is that by knowing how people behave and why they behave in a certain way, we can understand them better. ____38____ For example, if we know that someone is an introvert, we will understand why he or she does not feel comfortable when he or she is with a big group of newly met people. ____39____
Another way knowledge of personality can help us is when we want to improve ourselves. If we know what personality type we belong to and the reasons why we behave the way we do, we can then try to change some of the bad things so that they can become good. ____40____
A. Do you know which personality type you are?
B. Personality types affect our life in many ways.
C. Does personality make you different from others?
D. In this way, we can make ourselves a better person.
E. First of all, let us take a look at what personality means.
F. This will help to make our relationship with them stronger.
G. We may then help this person to make friends and talk to others.
E 37. A 38. F 39. G 40. D

注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
The next morning, Ryan told the teen to meet him at the docks.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then one of the divers emerged from the depths of the water.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Ryan told the teen to meet him at the docks. Jimmy arrived, shoulders hunched and eyes fixed on the ground, avoiding Ryan’s gaze. To his surprise, the man handed him a wrapped sandwich. “Eat first,” Ryan said, his tone softer than expected. As Jimmy nibbled silently, Ryan introduced a local dive team, and declared his plan to recover that ring. Jimmy’s eyes widened — he hadn’t expected this effort. For hours, the team combed the dark waters near the docks. Each time a diver emerged with nothing but handfuls of seaweed, Jimmy’s fists clenched tighter. He mumbled apologies, words dissolving into the crash of waves, but Ryan silenced him, “We won’t stop until we find it”, his voice firm yet calm.
Then one of the divers emerged from the depths of the water. In his hand was the wallet, the ring glinting faintly under the noon sun. Jimmy rubbed his eyes as if to confirm it wasn’t a dream. When Ryan informed the owner her ring was found and he would pay the $150 on Jimmy’s behalf, she was overcome with emotion. Moved by his gesture, she immediately agreed to drop the theft charges against Jimmy. Yet the matter didn’t end there. Troubled about Jimmy’s predicament, Ryan even offered the kid a job at his bar. By sunset, Jimmy was mopping floors there, his first wage set aside to repay the stolen $150. The wedding ring sat behind the counter, awaiting its owner — a small circle of gold, gleaming not with wealth, but with the quiet light of grace, proof that even in the shadow of a mistake, kindness can lead the way home.
