Getting started
Read the two quotes and answer the questions.
1. What do these two quotes mean? Explain each one in your own words.
2. Which quote makes you think more? Explain why.
1. Perhaps people will discourage you from visiting a place, thinking it is awful, when in reality, it is truly beautiful. Or perhaps someone constantly tells you how wonderful a destination is. Go and see for yourself and make up your own minds. That is what the first quote says to me.
1. The second quote tells me that people need to be brave to travel. Otherwise they will not go anywhere even if they have enough money.

2. The first quote.
This quote emphasises the importance of first-hand experience and not relying only on the opinions of others. It encourages individuals to take action and explore for themselves in order to gain a deeper understanding of a situation or topic.

This quote suggests that travelling requires more than just money; it also demands bravery and willingness to step outside one’s comfort zone.

TEEN skill: Persuading
When you want to persuade someone to do something, do not do it directly.
Instead, you might make a statement or ask a question to find out the other person’s view.
In this way, you are persuading others to do something very politely.
Role-play
Lisa’s parents are reading a brochure and discussing what to do for the next day in Nepal. With a partner, act out their conversation.
/ˌɛkspɪˈdɪʃənz/ n.

/ˈtʊk.tʊk/ n. 嘟嘟车
/ˈsuːvənɪəz/ n. 纪念品
But if we go hiking, we’ll have a real chance to watch wild animals like monkeys and exotic birds in their natural habitat. Wouldn’t that be more exciting than just riding past streets?
Role-play
I think we should go hiking in the hills around Pokhara. The sunrise view from there is absolutely unforgettable!
Hiking sounds exhausting, and we’re on holiday to relax. Why don’t we take a Tuk Tuk through the old town instead? It’s a fun, easy way to soak up the atmosphere.
Role-play
How about we combine both? We start with an early morning hike to see wildlife and the sunrise, then take a Tuk Tuk down to the market to shop for souvenirs afterwards. That way we get adventure and culture in one day.
Wild animals might be unpredictable – I’d rather not take that risk. Have you considered buying souvenirs from local artisans? We could find beautiful handcrafted items and support the community directly.
Role-play
Great! I’ll pack some water and snacks for the hike, and you can handle the bargaining at the market.
That’s a clever compromise. I’m convinced – let’s do the hike first, then the Tuk Tuk ride and shopping. It’ll be a memorable day!
But it’s always crowded there in the morning. Why don’t we start with the Bund? We can take a walk along the river and enjoy the cool breeze before it gets too hot.
Update my to-do list
With a partner, discuss and work out a plan for a day trip. Reach an agreement on the time, places to go, and things to do.
Hey Lucy, the summer holiday is coming! How about we plan a one-day trip around Shanghai?
Great idea! I think we should visit the Oriental Pearl Tower first – the view from the top must be amazing.
I do love xiaolongbao! But if we go to Yu Garden first, we’ll waste too much time in queues. Wouldn’t it be better to visit the Shanghai Museum in the morning? It’s free and we can learn about history, then have lunch at the nearby food street.
Update my to-do list
With a partner, discuss and work out a plan for a day trip. Reach an agreement on the time, places to go, and things to do.
Hmm, that sounds peaceful. However, I really want to try some local snacks. Have you considered going to Yu Garden? They have the best xiaolongbao and fried dumplings.
That’s a clever arrangement. How about we meet at 8 a.m. at the Bund, take the ferry at 9, spend an hour at the museum, and then head to Yu Garden for lunch and shopping?
Update my to-do list
With a partner, discuss and work out a plan for a day trip. Reach an agreement on the time, places to go, and things to do.
You can’t appreciate history on an empty stomach, Tom. I suggest we grab a quick breakfast at a small shop near the Bund, then take the ferry across the Huangpu River to see the skyline. After that, we can go to the museum.

Perfect! And in the afternoon, we can go up the Oriental Pearl Tower to watch the sunset. I promise it’ll be worth the wait.
See you! This will be a fantastic day.
Sure! I’ll check the ferry schedule. See you tomorrow at 8!
Deal. Let’s also buy some souvenirs for our families at the old street. Shall we book the tickets online now?
