Books to Read in Your 20s
The Kite Runner(By Khaled Hosseini)
As a Middle Eastern and North African Studies student, I have a great interest in books about what takes place in this area. I first read this book in high school and really enjoyed it because of its accurate language. If any of you is interested in reading this book and hasn’t yet, I highly recommend it.
Firefly Lane(By Kristin Hannah)
This is my favorite book. It is a story about friendship, love and life lessons. The story covers the lives of two best friends, Tully and Kate, from childhood to adulthood. I learned so much about friendship and life. So, read Firefly Lane! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and then you’ll share this book to your best friend.
Half the Sky(By Nicholas D. Kristof)
For any person of any age, Half the Sky is a must-read. It describes the struggle of women and the most pressing human rights problems of our time: the common oppression of women and girls.
The Little Prince (By Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)
This children’s book is simple. It might seem like a wrong book to recommend to someone in their twenties but perhaps that’s what makes it a good choice. It sings praises to exploration and shows the importance of making friends.
21.Who is the writer of the book The Kite Runner?
A.Kristin Hannah.B.Khaled Hosseini.
C.Kristof.D.Nicholas.
22.What can you learn from Firefly Lane?

D.It’s a simple book for children.
23.Which book will you read if you want to know about human rights problems?

Have you ever bought Genki Forest (元气森林) sparkling water because it’s advertised as “sugar-free”? The company recently said that they were sorry for a misleading advertisement. The company said the drinks are “sucrose-free”(零蔗糖), but this is not the same as “sugar-free”. Now the company has changed the word “sugar-free” to “low sugar” on the bottle.
In fact, there are many kinds of sugar, sucrose in just one of them. Other kinds of sugar, such as fructose(果糖)and sugar alcohol(糖醇),are still in Genki Forest drinks. These types of sugar are used as sweeteners(甜味剂).They offer little energy, but a small amount of them can make drinks taste sweet. That’s why low sugar drinks like Genki Forest are popular among those people who want to lose weight. They believe that they can not only enjoy sweet drinks but also avoid taking in too much sugar.
However, studies find that the sweeteners might make people eat more, when you eat sweet-tasting things, they send your brain a “sweet signal”, then your brain tells your body to prepare itself to take in energy. But since the low -sugar soft drink has little energy, the brain will not receive what it is expecting. At this time, you will feel hungry and start getting energy by eating more food.
According to China Daily, drinking to many low-sugar drinks might lead to fatness and many other diseases. It’s time for you to think twice when you want to keep up with the fashion.
24. Why did Genki Forest recently say sorry?
A. For not having any sugar in its drinks.
B.For making too many advertisements.
C. For its poisonous drinks
D. For advertising its drinks incorrectly.
25.What do we know about Genki Forest from Paragragh 3?
A. Its drinks can make people sick.
B. People can lose weight by drinking its drinks.
C. Its drinks taste sweeter than other drinks.
D. There are sweeteners in its drinks.
26.What do studies show about sweeteners?
A. They are used more in food than drinks.
B. They might make people feel healthier.
C. They might make people feel hungrier.
D. They provide enough energy for people.
27.According to the last paragraph, drinking lots of low-sugar drinks can be___.
A. wonderful B. harmful C.fashionable D. enjoyable
C
One million species face extinction, more than ever before in human history, according to a UN report released in May. And humans should be responsible.
The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) based the assessment(评估)on some 15, 000 sources considering the causes and results of environmental changes over the past 50 years.
The findings are clear and alarming. The researchers have found that about 25 percent of the world’s plants and animals are at risk of extinction. These include sea and land animals. Even the domesticated(驯养的)animals are at risk: Over 9 percent of the domesticated animal species used for food and agriculture might have been lost.
There are some big problems. This rapid decrease of the natural world endangers global food safety and quality of life. For example, about 4 billion people rely on natural medicines, produced by the disappearing species, for their health care. And losses of species that pollinate(授粉)plants threaten up to $577 billion in crops each year.
The researchers identified five drivers responsible for the unpleasant news. They think at the top of the list is the change of land and sea use. The change in ecosystems towards agriculture, aquaculture and other human developments has led to changes in the natural living space of species. It is followed by the direct overuse of creatures (harvesting crops, cutting down the trees, hunting and fishing) and climate change, including rising sea levels and increasing extreme-weather events, wildfires, floods and droughts. The final causes of species extinction are pollution, especially plastics, and the spread of non-native species that can displace or kill native plants and animals.
The researchers say it is time for humans to make a change. They think maybe a new global way to save food and refuse waste in our life could turn the tables. Whether that is possible is an open question.
28.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic of the text.
B.To introduce the schedule of the report.
C.To introduce humans’ sense of responsibility.
D.To introduce the history of human development.
29.What does paragraph 3 mainly show?
A.The reliability of the findings.
B.The species of animals worldwide.
C.The seriousness of species’ reduction.
D.The risky experiences of the researchers.
30.What is the biggest threat of species’ survival according to the researchers?
A.Climate change.B.Natural disasters.
C.Changes of their living space.D.The direct overuse of creatures.
31.What are the researchers in favor of?
A.Changing our living habits.
B.Spreading non-native species.
C.Limiting native plants and animals.
D.Stopping discussing the food problem.

The Atlantic salmon (鲑鱼) of Scotland are strong to survive difficult conditions and they are also determined animals. Each spring and summer, they return from the North Atlantic Ocean to lay eggs in Scotland’s shallow rivers, leaping up waterfalls and over barriers, pushing themselves upstream in great efforts. Some fail, and others succeed, but today they face another challenge.
During the mid-1980s, there were between eight and ten million salmon swimming around Scotland’s Atlantic coast; that number has now dropped sharply. There’s evidence of reducing the availability of the salmon’s prey (猎物) as climate change warms and acidifies oceans. New research suggests climate change is also bearing down on rivers, which is bad news for salmon.Adapted to life in cold water, salmon experience slow growth and population changes at high temperatures. Heat has an effect on their health and reduces their resistance to disease.
“Now salmon are struggling to deal with the rising temperatures. There are recent records of 27°C in the upper reaches of the Dee catchment,” says Peter Cairns, director of an environmental charity. In 2018, Scotland recorded the lowest pole catch for salmon since records began. Evidence suggests that the lower quality of river worsens the impact of our changing climate. “Atlantic salmon evolved using river systems in Scotland that were once way more forested and therefore shaded.” Yet Scotland is today one of the least wooded countries in Europe, with just 3 percent of its native woodland undamaged. Scientists have found that just 35percent of rivers in Scotland have enough tree cover for salmon survival.
A movement to get trees back on riverbanks is gathering pace. “Broad-leaf trees close tothe bank can reduce the light that enters the water,” explains fisheries scientist Anthony Hawkins.A new initiative called Riverwoods — led by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and supported by Scottish Water and several other government and regulatory bodies — aims to create a network of woodlands along Scotland’s riverbanks, and has already received a number of large funds.“Money is not the pressing business. River health is complex, but tree planting is one of the most basic things we can get started with right away,”says Cairns.
32.Why do Atlantic salmon make great journeys back to the rivers?
A.They search for foods.
B.The rivers are relatively cool.
C.They reproduce themselves.
D.The seas are increasingly warm.
33.How do the rising temperatures in rivers affect salmon?
A.They grow more quickly.
B.They are less active in water.
C.They are more heat-resistant.
D.They are more likely to get diseases.
34.What is a challenge for salmon when they return to Scotland’s rivers?
A.There is much fish catching.
B.There is a shortage of food.
C.The river systems are unsuitable for the forest growth.
D.The ecology environment has changed.
35.What does Cairns really intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.There is enough money for the project.
B.There are too many vital things to deal with.
C.It is urgent to plant riverbank trees.
D.It is too hard to restore the river health.

Love the Process
When you first feel that you love the process more than the result, you will sense it makes you better at dealing with failures. B. Never compare yourself with others.
C. Impatience is the direct route to losing heart.

ACurrently Popular TravellingStyle
“Travel squad”(特种兵式旅游) becomes a popular travelling style among tight schedule and low budget youth. For example, when it comes to a trip in Beijing, people usually spend several days watching the flag-raising ceremony at Tian’anmen Square, visiting the 720,000 square meters Palace Museum, and trying out local snacks and roast duck.... It seems to be a typical week-long journey to Beijing, 41 some people decided to visit all the spots within 48 hours, because they are not 42 travelers, but “tourist special troops”. Usually, they use the nighttime to transport and the daytime for sightseeing spots.
The super-tight 43 of a Beijing trip immediately went popular after being shared online.People 44 its authenticity(真实性)because it is not a relaxing trip but more like
a 45 “special forces” training. But some people copied the journey, including Zhang Lan, a junior year student who just spent a “crazy” weekend with her high school friend in Beijing.
They took an overnight train 46 Beijing, and then spent the first day at the Palace Museum, the National Museum, drum-tower, hutongs and the Temple of Heaven. “I walked 35,000 47 on Saturday but the usual number on campus is fewer than 8,000.”
Because of a really 48 budget, they spent the night at 24-hour restaurants like McDonalds’ and Haidilao hotpot rather than 49 a hotel room to save money. Zhang Lan saw her friend off at the train station on Sunday evening and both of them were completely 50 , and managed to catch their classes on Monday afternoon.
Due to the COVID epidemic control 51 , many people like Zhang Lan had missed many travel places in the past 2 years. 52 Beijing, Changsha in Hunan Province known 53 spicy food and red tourism, East China’s Zibo city which came to sudden fame for its local barbecues, Chengdu in Southwest China boasting with its cute giant pandas of all attractions, and cities like Nanjing and Suzhou in East China's Jiangsu are among popular 54 for the travelers.
So what’s your opinions about such kind of travelling style? Maybe, just as one of the travelers said, “My body could be tired, but the delight of seeing fresh things go 55 the usual limit of physical exhaustion.”

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Many years ago, I was at a girls’ school and our teacher made all the girls in the class sit next to someone different every day.
On one of the days, my teacher paired Madhuri, who I had never talked to, and me to sit next to each other. I noticed that she seemed very anxious. I asked her what was wrong. She remained silent at first, but eventually, she told me that she had three sisters in her family and that her father couldn’t afford school books for all of them.
My primary school was strict, as was the standard then, and if you didn’t have your school books, the teacher would make you leave the class. Madhuri was very worried that day because she thought that the teacher would tell her to leave the class. When the teacher saw thatshe didn’t have the books, he told Madhuri that she couldn’t attend class for a week unless she could have the books the next day.
Madhuri was very upset. I felt so bad when I saw her pain that I decided to help her. I went to speak to her and offered to buy the books for her. She refused my offer to help. She had very strong principles and she would never accept things bought by others.
When I got home from school I told my mom the story. She said that it was good that I had tried to help but I should stop worrying about it because there was nothing more that I could do if she had refused my offer to help. I couldn’t stop worrying about it though.
