Passage A
When I was twelve, my grandmother decided to teach me the art of batik, a traditional craft of the Miao people in Guizhou. Batik uses hot wax to draw patterns on white cloth, and then the cloth is put into blue dye made from local plants. The waxed parts stay white, creating beautiful designs of flowers, birds and butterflies.
At first, my hands shook badly as I held the wax knife. The hot wax dripped onto my fingers and burned a little. I wanted to give up many times and put the tool down in frustration. But Grandma would hold my hand and say, 'Slow down. Every line you draw carries a story.' She told me that her own grandmother had taught her the same patterns sixty years ago, sitting by the same wooden window in our old village house.
After months of patient practice, I could finally draw a butterfly without stopping. When I showed Grandma my first finished piece, she smiled warmly and hung it on the wall beside her own works. That day, I understood that batik is not just a craft. During the summer of 2024, a group of university students, including me, traveled to a small village nestled deep in the green mountains of Guizhou. Our main goal was to help build a community library for the village children. Before we arrived, the children there had very few books to read for fun outside of school.
We worked hard for two full weeks under the hot summer sun. Some volunteers carried bricks and painted the walls a bright white. Others sorted hundreds of donated books and put them carefully on newly painted shelves. The village chief kindly gave us a large room in the community center, and local families brought wooden chairs and small round tables. Every evening after dinner, children would come and watch us work.
On the last day, we held a small opening party. On that last day, a little girl named A-Mei picked up a picture book and began to read aloud. Her voice was soft but clear in the quiet room. At that moment, I knew this library was not just a building. It was truly a door to a wider world for these children. The library now happily serves over sixty children from the village.

Then I heard my classmates shouting my name from both sides of the running track. Their voices pushed me forward.
