In the 1980s, when I was a senior in high school, I was passionate about baseball. However, my poor health 16 me from participating in such sports. Instead, I could only take part in the sports by 17 as a statistician (统计员), a role that allowed me to stay close to the sport I loved. My job was to examine various statistics (数据) connected with baseball and to provide 18 to the coach. Though I wasn’t on the field, I found joy in studying the numbers behind the game.
One season, our team struggled badly, losing several games 19 . I carefully analysed each player’s 20 , focusing on their batting averages, fielding percentages, and other key statistics. Convinced that a change in the line-up (阵容) would be 21 , I approached the coach to suggest 22 line-ups. Initially, my ideas were met with skepticism. The coach, like many, preferred to 23 his experience over the numbers.
However, following our team’s seventh 24 , he finally agreed to let me try my hand at 25 the line-up. I re-examined the statistics from a fresh perspective and proposed a few minor but crucial 26 . To everyone’s surprise, the team showed 27 almost immediately. The new line-up made the team play to its 28 , and all of the players felt more inspired. Over the next few games, we continued to refine the line-up, and the 29 behind these changes kept everyone engaged and focused. 30 , we were leading with a score of 4-2 and, against all odds, won the championship. This victory was sweet, not just because of the trophy, but because it 31 the power of statistics in sports.
Looking back, I realise that even though I couldn’t play on the field, my efforts as a statistician were just as valuable. My basic 32 of statistics played an important role in our success, which earned me a school award and further 33 my love for the subject. It was a turning point that led me to 34 a major in statistics in college. This experience taught me that even from the sidelines (场外), one can make a meaningful impact with the right knowledge and a bit of courage to 35 the way things have always been done. It was then that I discovered the power of data and the impact of creative problem-solving — a lesson that has shaped my journey ever since.

A
The upcoming winter season offers a selection of the finest, quickest, toughest and most delightful running events across the UK for those seeking adventure or community spirit.
● Bah Humbug 10K, 1 December
Do yourself a favour and bring towels and plastic bags with you, because every bit of gear you wear during this event is likely to be caked with mud by the end. Therefore, the organisers have done well to ensure there are changing rooms and showers available for all runners. racebest.com
● Winter Solstice Strider, 8 December
Dig that head flashlight out of the messy drawer for this after-dark run or walk for a good cause. You have a 5K route, which winds through the forest at the St Ives Estate. The route is far from flat and will almost certainly be muddy in places, so make sure your batteries are well charged in case there are emergencies.sueryder.org
● The Christmas Charity Run, 21 December
This event is run by a most environmentally conscious organiser in the country, and is therefore only open to local runners to reduce car travel. Another great feature is that £7.50 of the £10 entry fee goes straight to a local charity that supports people with cancer, making this one of the most positive-impact events that you could possibly find. eventrac.co.uk
● Mapledurham 10& Half, 29 December
Mapledurham events are always well organised and, with unpleasant weather likely, you’ll have to deal with some mud on the various uphills and downhills on whichever of the 10K, 10-mile or half-marathon courses you choose. The organisers have prioritised finding a good route over precise measurements, so all three races have a rather loose relationship with their stated distance. mstevents.co.uk

Wilma Rudolph was born with many challenges. She was born into a large family at a time when African-American babies could not get the best doctors and hospitals. As a child, she was sick with a long list of diseases including pneumonia (肺炎), which left her left leg weak and not fully normal.
But Wilma had a loving and devoted family who made sure she got medical attention and provided physical treatment themselves four times a day. She wore a leg brace (腿部支架) from the time she was five until she was nine years old. Then, one Sunday, she walked by herself. By age 11, she was a basketball star at her school.
When the track coach at Tennessee State University saw Wilma play basketball, he knew he wanted her to run for his team. As a high school student, she never lost a track meet. Wilma began attending college practices while still in high school. When she was just 16, she competed in the 1956 Olympics in Australia and her team won the bronze medal in the 4×100m relay.
Wilma continued to train, and four years later, the Olympics were held again, and Wilma was the star in Italy. She became the first American woman to win three gold medals in one Olympics. She was so fast. People used to say that if you blinked (眨眼), you would miss her.
When Wilma went home to Tennessee, the governor wanted to have a victory parade (游行) for her, but Wilma said she would not attend unless blacks and whites were able to go together. Her parade was the first inclusive event held in her hometown.
For the rest of her life, Wilma continued to promote athletics. She created the Wilma Rudolph Foundation to help young athletes, worked as a track coach at DePauw University in Indiana and served as a goodwill ambassador (亲善大使) to West Africa.
41.What helped Wilma overcome her leg problems as a child?
A.Her family’s support. B.A strict diet and exercise.
C.A new medical treatment. D.Her coach’s encouragement.
42.What can we learn about Wilma?
A.She wore a leg brace for nine years.
B.She played basketball well when she was 11.
C.She joined a track coach’s team while attending college.
D.She won a gold medal in the 1956 Olympics in Australia.
43.Why did Wilma first refuse the victory parade put forward by the governor?
A.She wanted to promote equality. B.She expected a bigger crowd.
C.She tried to avoid the media. D.She disliked public events.
44.Which of the following best describes Wilma according to the last paragraph?
A.She was athletically competitive. B.She was emotionally intelligent.
C.She was socially responsible. D.She was skilled in leadership.
45.What aspects of Wilma does the text mainly focus on?
A.Her devotion and passion. B.Her athletic skills and records.
C.Her challenges and achievements. D.Her optimism and childhood illness.
C
Second place is just the first loser. While the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it doesn’t always lead to human flourishing and can create misery. Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem without unrealistically suggesting that we entirely dispense with our competitive nature.
Though second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner regarding happiness and longevity. In a 1995 study, scholars systematically coded the emotional reactions of silver and bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. Using slow-motion footage captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium (领奖台), researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. Over 80% of bronze medalists exhibited genuine smiles, a figure that was nearly double that observed among silver medalists. Moreover, every bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than the average smile observed among the silver medalists.
More recent research has looked at the life span of all three medalist categories. A 2018 study tracked the average longevity of those representing the U.S. in the Olympic Games from 1904 to 1936 and found that the athlete whose best performance was silver lived to 72. Gold medalists beat this by four years, living to 76. But first prize in longevity went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78.
The study had a handy explanation for this discrepancy: “Unsatisfactory competition outcomes may adversely affect health.” In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists, whereas the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory shows the difference between upward and downward social comparison. When we compare ourselves with those who have more money, power, or achievements, we often feel like, well, losers. It tends to lower motivation and increase stress. In contrast, downward comparison makes people feel better about themselves and, thus, happier.
The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish. It tends to lower the intrinsic motivation, and thus enjoyment that people obtain from their activities. The principle at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you.
46.What does the underlined words “dispense with” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Stick to. B.Get rid of. C.Depend on. D.Take charge of.
47.What can be learned from the 1995 study?
A.Silver medalists showed less happiness than bronze winners.
B.Silver medalists’ smiling frequency was close to that of gold medalists.
C.The average bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than every silver medalist’s.
D.The emotions of both medalists were unchanged from the events to the podium.
48.What is the cause of the difference in medalists’ life span?
A.The stress from downward social comparison.
B.The motivation from upward social comparison.
C.The effect of different types of social comparison.
D.The failure to look up to the top after the competition.
49.What does the writer advise us to do to achieve happiness?
A.Learn from the top performers. B.Try to be the best in every field.
C.Commit to one’s consistent personal growth. D.Strengthen the motivation to obtain achievement.
50.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.The Triumph of Coming in Third B.The Problem of Human Competition
C.The Mechanism of Social Comparison D.The Psychology of the Olympic Medalists
D
It is widely acknowledged that happiness comes from within. However, how we perceive and interact with the world are important factors for happiness. But everything exists in a context, and this is a crucial component of everybody’s happiness. I still remember the beautiful plant I had in my flat as a student. Although I tended carefully to it, it was never happy. The problem was, no matter what I did, it was never going to be happy, for this plant longed for hot and damp environment, which my draughty Scottish flat was never going to provide. I could have blamed the plant or myself but, realistically, it needed a different context to make it happy.
Context is equally as important for humans. How we perceive our world is important, but if we start seeing this as everything, we start to place the blame of unhappiness and full responsibility for happiness on the individual. This is problematic. Yes we want to increase adaptability, so that we can deal with stressful situations. This is relevant in both personal and work situations. Telling somebody they need to cope better when their work load is unmanageable is unhelpful. The same applies in your personal life. Telling someone who faces daily bullying that they need to cope with it better to be happy suggests they are somehow to blame for the complex systemic and cultural factors that create stress, difficult emotions and unhappiness. It places the responsibility back on the individual, thereby creating even mere stress.
Many studies show how context is important to happiness: people who have access to green spaces have higher happiness levels; people who work in organizations with a safe and supportive culture feel and work better; people who experience discrimination or bullying have higher levels of unhappiness. If our context makes us feel safe and valued, we are less stressed and happier.
Of course, not all aspects of context can be changed easily. You may be trapped in a difficult work situation because you need money to repay your car loan. In such situations, it’s important to separate context from self. Bear in mind that the context is crucial for how you are feeling; seek support, talk things through and solve problems, if possible.
It is also important to think about the aspects of context that are in your control. Which elements get in the way of building your sandwich, distract you from it or create barriers to using it? Which elements make it easier for you to build your sandwich and support you in doing so?
51.Why did the author mention the plant he had as a student in the first paragraph?
A.To raise the readers’ interest in plants B.To share his experience with readers.
C.To conclude the importance of happiness. D.To explain the main topic of the passage.
52.What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A.Attaching too much importance to context may lead to more problems.
B.Increasing our adaptability can help us deal with various situations.
C.Placing the responsibility back on the individual creates more stress.
D.Perceiving our world connects personal situations with work ones.
53.In what context do people have higher happiness levels?
A.They have access to quiet and faraway places.
B.They work in a company with risky culture.
C.They experience racial discrimination and betrayal.
D.They stay in a safe and encouraging environment.
54.If you are stuck in a difficult situation, what are you suggested to do?
A.Make great efforts to change the situation. B.Separate the situation from your family.
C.Turn to others for help and solve the problem. D.Keep a good state of mind and earn more money.
55.What is the passage mainly talked about?
A.Interacting with the world increases everybody’s happiness.
B.Context plays an extremely important role in everybody’s happiness.
C.Happiness comes from our perceiving the surroundings and ourselves.
D.Thinking about the aspects of context that are in your control is crucial.
It is now possible to watch live sport on television on any day of the week and the current amount of reporting will undoubtedly increase further in years to come. This is certainly having an influence on the live sports events themselves, and there are both benefits and shortcomings to this.
Why has there been such growth in televised sport? For one thing, with digital broadcasting, there are now many more TV channels than there were even ten years ago. Moreover, sport has become an important form of entertainment, appealing to both men and women.
When are the benefits of this state of affairs? One obvious advantage to the profession is the addition of money provided by television companies. Large football clubs benefit financially from TV income and the top players can command very large salaries. Less popular sports also receive money that can be used in training and awareness-raising. What’s more, there is a health benefit to some of the population, because through televised sport, more people have become interested in actually playing sport.
However, there are some disadvantages if so much sport is on television. Considering football again many small clubs have suffered financial losses recently, as they cannot compete with the large ones. There has been a general falling in ticket sales, especially among smaller clubs. Fewer people attend live matches nowadays, preferring to watch from the comfort of their living room. And ticket prices have risen greatly.
To sum up, while televised sport has created many opportunities and benefited certain people and clubs very much, it has also been responsible for changing the nature of live sports events for ever.
56.What is the main idea of the text? ( no more than 8 words)
57.What’s the technological cause of the growth in televised sport? (no more than 3 words)

61.Dear Chris,
I’m glad to share about our school sports meet! It was held last Friday to promote fitness and teamwork.
The most interesting part was the relay races. During the boys’ 4x100m, our class was falling behind, but our last runner amazingly overtook three competitors near the finish line! The crowd went wild! Another funny moment was seeing our usually serious math teacher compete (and surprisingly win!) in the teachers’ race. Everyone cheered and laughed.
Honestly, I felt incredibly energized throughout the event. I felt proud of our class’s teamwork and enjoyed the lively atmosphere. It truly strengthened our sense of unity. It was a fantastic experience!
Yours sincerely,
Li Jin

43. 根据倒数第二段“When Wilma went home to Tennessee, the governor wanted to have a victory parade (游行) for her, but Wilma said she would not attend unless blacks and whites were able to go together.(当威尔玛回到田纳西州的家中时,州长想为她举行一场胜利游行,但威尔玛表示,除非黑人和白人能够一起参加,否则她不会出席)”可知,威尔玛最初拒绝了州长提出的胜利游行活动是因为她想要推动平等。故选A。
根据最后一段“For the rest of her life, Wilma continued to promote athletics. She created the Wilma Rudolph Foundation to help young athletes, worked as a track coach at DePauw University in Indiana and served as a goodwill ambassador (亲善大使) to West Africa.(在余生中,威尔玛一直致力于推广体育运动。她创立了威尔玛·鲁道夫基金会,以帮助年轻运动员。她还在印第安纳州的迪帕乌大学担任田径教练,并担任了西非的亲善大使)”可推知,威尔玛具有社会责任感。故选C。
45.主旨大意题。根据倒数第三段“Wilma continued to train, and four years later, the Olympics were held again, and Wilma was the star in Italy. She became the first American woman to win three gold medals in one Olympics. She was so fast. People used to say that if you blinked (眨眼), you would miss her.(威尔玛继续进行训练,四年后,奥运会再次举行,而此时的威尔玛已成为意大利的明星。她成为了首位在一届奥运会上获得三枚金牌的美国女子选手。她跑得实在太快了。人们过去常说,如果你眨眼一下,就会错过她)”结合文章讲述了威尔玛幼时身患疾病致腿疾,在家人支持下康复,后成为田径名将,斩获奥运三金,还推动种族平等并助力青少年体育事业。可知,这篇文章主要聚焦于威尔玛所面临的挑战以及取得的成就。故选C。

46.B 47.A 48.C 49.C 50.A
根据第一段中“While the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it doesn’t always lead to human flourishing and can create misery. Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem without unrealistically suggesting that we entirely dispense with our competitive nature.(虽然竞争精神可能像呼吸空气一样自然,但它并不总是导致人类繁荣,也可能带来痛苦。幸运的是,这个问题有一个解决办法,不必不切实际地建议我们完全……自己的竞争本性。)” 可知,“dispense with”的宾语是“competitive nature(竞争本性)”。前文指出“竞争精神可能带来痛苦”,因此后文提出的解决方案应是如何“处理”这种本性,但又不是不切实际地“完全摆脱”竞争本性。“dispense with”的意思与“get rid of(摒弃;摆脱)”一致。故选B。
根据第二段中“Using slow-motion footage captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium (领奖台), researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. Over 80% of bronze medalists exhibited genuine smiles, a figure that was nearly double that observed among silver medalists. Moreover, every bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than the average smile observed among the silver medalists. (研究人员借助运动员赛后即刻及后续领奖台上的慢镜头画面发现,铜牌得主总体上似乎比银牌得主更快乐。超过80%的铜牌得主展现出真诚的微笑,这个数字几乎是银牌得主中观察到的两倍。)”可知,1995年的研究表明,银牌得主表现的幸福感低于铜牌得主。故选A。
根据第四段中“This theory shows the difference between upward and downward social comparison. When we compare ourselves with those who have more money, power, or achievements, we often feel like, well, losers.(该理论揭示了向上和向下社会比较之间的差异。当我们将自己与那些更有钱、更有权或成就更高的人比较时,我们往往会觉得自己是失败者。)”和“In contrast, downward comparison makes people feel better about themselves and, thus, happier.(相比之下,向下比较会让人们自我感觉更好,从而更快乐。)”
根据最后一段中“The principle at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you.(这里的原则是努力超越自己过去的表现,你唯一需要比较的人就是你自己。)”
根据第二段中“Though second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner regarding happiness and longevity. (虽然第二名在输家中名列第一,但就幸福与长寿而言,第三名却能成为真正的赢家。)”以及全文围绕铜牌得主更快乐、寿命更长展开论述可知,本文的最佳标题是“第三名的胜利”。故选A。
【答案】51.D 52.A 53.D 54.C 55.B
根据第一段“It is widely acknowledged that happiness comes from within, However, how we perceive and interact with the world are important factors for happiness. I could have blamed the plant or myself but, realistically, it needed a different context to make it happy.(人们普遍认为,幸福源自内心。
根据第二段“Telling somebody they need to cope better when their work load is unmanageable is unhelpful. The same applies in your personal life. Telling someone who faces daily bullying that they need to cope with it better to be happy suggests they are somehow to blame for the complex systemic and cultural factors that create stress, difficult emotions and unhappiness. It places the responsibility back on the individual, thereby creating even mere stress.(当一个人的工作负担难以承受时,告诉他们需要更好地应对这种状况是毫无帮助的。同样的道理也适用于个人生活。告诉那些每天遭受欺凌的人,他们需要更好地应对这种状况才能获得快乐,这暗示着他们自身在某种程度上要为造成压力、负面情绪和不快的复杂系统性及文化性因素负责。这将责任推回给个人身上,从而只会进一步增加他们的压力)”可知,过分注重背景信息可能会导致更多问题。故选A。
根据第三段“Many studies show how context is important to happiness: people who have access to green spaces have higher happiness levels; people who work in organizations with a safe and supportive culture feel and work better; people who experience discrimination or bullying have higher levels of unhappiness.(许多研究都表明,环境对幸福感有着重要影响:拥有绿色空间的人幸福感更高;在拥有安全且支持性文化的工作环境中工作的人工作和生活状态更好;遭受歧视或欺凌的人幸福感更低)”可知,人们身处一个安全且令人鼓舞的环境中会拥有更高的幸福感。故选D。
根据倒数第二段“Bear in mind that the context is crucial for how you are feeling; seek support, talk things through and solve problems, if possible.(要记住,环境对你的感受至关重要;寻求支持,把事情说清楚并解决问题(如果可能的话))”可知,如果你陷入了一种困境,你需要向他人寻求帮助来解决问题。故选C。
通读全文,并根据第二段“Context is equally as important for humans. How we perceive our world is important, but if we start seeing this as everything, we start to place the blame of unhappiness and full responsibility for happiness on the individual.(对于人类而言,背景环境同样至关重要。我们如何感知这个世界是很重要的,但如果我们将这一切视为一切,那么我们就会开始将不快乐的责任归咎于个人,而将创造幸福的全部责任推卸给个人)”可知,这篇文章主要谈论了语境对每个人的幸福都有着极其重要的影响。故选B。
第二部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
58.What effect does televised sport have on ticket for live sport? (no more than 15 words)
59.What does the word “it” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to? (no more than 3 words)
60.Which do you prefer to watch, televised sport or live sport? Please give your reasons. (no more than 20 words)
56.Advantages and disadvantages of televised sport. 57.Digital broadcasting. 58.There is a general falling in ticket sales and a great rise in ticket prices. 59.Televised sport. 60.I prefer to watch televised sport because it’s convenient and I can have more choices to enjoy. Or: I prefer to watch live sport because I enjoy the atmosphere in the stadium.
Advantages and disadvantages of televised sport.
根据第二段“Why has there been such growth in televised sport? For one thing, with digital broadcasting, there are now many more TV channels than there were even ten years ago. (为什么电视转播的体育节目会有如此大的增长?一方面,有了数字广播,现在的电视频道甚至比十年前还要多。)”可知电视体育节目增长的技术原因是数字广播,故答案为Digital broadcasting.
根据第四段“Considering football again many small clubs have suffered financial losses recently, as they cannot compete with the large ones. There has been a general falling in ticket sales, especially among smaller clubs. Fewer people attend live matches nowadays, preferring to watch from the comfort of their living room. And ticket prices have risen greatly. (再想想足球,许多小俱乐部最近都遭受了财政损失,因为他们无法与大俱乐部竞争。门票销售普遍下降,尤其是在较小的俱乐部。)”可知电视体育节目使得现场体育比赛门票销售普遍下降,价格大幅上涨,故答案为There is a general falling in ticket sales and a great rise in ticket prices.
根据最后一段“To sum up, while televised sport has created many opportunities and benefited certain people and clubs very much, it has also been responsible for changing the nature of live sports events for ever. (综上所述,虽然电视体育创造了许多机会,使某些人和俱乐部受益匪浅,但它也永远改变了现场体育赛事的性质。)” 可知此句中while引导让步状语从句,前后主语一致,所以it指代的是前文的televised sport,故答案为Televised sport.
I prefer to watch televised sport because it’s convenient and I can have more choices to enjoy. Or: I prefer to watch live sport because I enjoy the atmosphere in the stadium.

Yours sincerely
Li Jin
Dear Chris,
I’m glad to share about our school sports meet!
Yours sincerely,
Li Jin
