Do teenagers in small villages do chores at home? How about the teenagers in big cities? To know the answers, we made a survey (调查) last month. We asked 4,000 teenagers in China. Half of them come from big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The others are from small villages. We made a chart (图表) according to our survey. Let’s have a look at it.
We can find out that teenagers in small villages do more chores than those in big cities. Maybe it is because they live a harder life. We will give our advice to parents in big cities. We think parents should give their children some chores to do because it’s a good chance for teenagers to learn how to take care of themselves.

Do you know doing chores at home can help kids become better?
One study followed 10,000 young students’ school performance for three years. Scientists found that kids who did chores at home got better grades and felt happier by third grade than kids who didn’t help. Another study showed chores help kids remember things better and control their actions. For example, when kids make their own food or help cook meals, they learn to plan and follow rules.
It’s good to start when kids are very young. Little kids (2-4 years) can put toys away or give water to plants. Younger school kids (5-7 years) can make the bed or put plates on the table. Older kids (8+) can fold clothes, help make food, or take out the rubbish. Parents should explain clearly what to do. Instead of saying “Clean your room,” say “Put your books here and dirty clothes there.” Doing chores at the same time every day helps kids remember, like giving food to the pet after eating breakfast or putting clothes in groups every weekend.
Letting kids join in the housework teaches them to care for themselves. Chores aren’t just cleaning—they teach kids how to live. When kids help at home, they feel proud, learn to solve problems, and get ready to grow up. Next time you clean, ask your kids to help! Teaching them now will help them later.
6.According to the passage, which chore can middle school students do?
A.Give water to plants.
B.Fold clothes.
C.Put plates on the table.
7.Which of the following instructions should parents give to young children?
A.“Put your toys away.”
B.“Put your clothes in the right groups.”
C.“Cut up two tomatoes and put them into the pot.”
8.What can children get better at by doing chores?
A.Taking care of their parents.
B.Having a good memory.
C.Bringing others happiness.
9.How does the writer develop the passage?
A.By giving numbers and choices.
B.By presenting opinions and facts.
C.By showing examples and results.
10.What’s the writing purpose of the passage?
A.To advise parents to let kids do chores.
B.To tell children why they should do chores.
C.To introduce some new studies about doing chores.

In some places of the world, people usually celebrate Family Day on the second Monday of February. Family Day is a day for families to have fun together. It’s a time for us to show love to our family.
Family Day was first held (被举办) in Alberta, Canada in 1990. It was held to show the importance of family to people. Later, Family Day was introduced to other places, such as Ontario and Saskatchewan. British Columbia celebrated Family Day as a holiday for the first time in 2013.
On Family Day, most people have a day off work. Many stores and supermarkets are closed, but post offices may be open. Buses run according to their usual timetables.
On that day, there are some kinds of activities. Many people plan and take part in activities, such as visiting art museums, watching movies, playing games and holding parties with their families. Some communities (社区) plan special activities, too.
The weather is usually very cold in February, so some people just choose to stay at home and do some cleaning, do some cooking or play games together. Hot chocolate and freshly made cookies are the most popular snacks for them. Some families may like to go to another (另一个) city to try something new there. Other people use the long weekend as a chance to take a short winter break, or to travel to visit friends.
These activities make family members know each other. Different families have different activities, but they are all very happy on Family Day. What about your family Day? Could you tell us something about it?
11.When do people usually celebrate Family Day?
12.Where was the first Family Day held?
13.Why do some families like to stay at home on Family Day?
14.What do you think of Family Day? Why do you think so?
