In her tiny Athens apartment, 93-year-old Ioanna Matsouka has knitted thousands of brightly colored scarves for children in need from Greece to Ukraine, and she has no plans to quit just yet. “Until I die, I will be knitting,” Matsouka says. Since she took up knitting in the 1990s, Matsouka has easily made over 3,000 scarves, her daughter estimates.
In the hallway by the door, shopping bags filled with her latest creations await their new home. A knitted blanket is thrown over the sofa where she spends her days.
Initially distributed to friends, the scarves were later contributed to children’s shelters across Greece as the stock expanded. Then, through acquaintances, they reached children in Bosnia and Ukraine. The latest batch of 70 went to a refugee camp near Athens this winter via the UN refugee agency.
Her daughter, Angeliki, narrates drawings and mails her mother has received over the years: “Thank you, be well, keep going. You gave joy to children, you gave joy to people.” That’s her only reward: a letter, a few words. Matsouka knits one scarf a day, now with small imperfections. Her vision is impaired and she suffers from severe facial pain, a condition known as trigeminal neuralgia (三叉神经痛). Angeliki says her mother is an example of resilience and optimism. Matsouka wakes up every morning, drinks a glass of milk, puts on her pearl earrings and gets to work. She takes a break for lunch and a nap, and then painstakingly knits into the night.
She may have even found the secret to a long life in it, she says. “It’s the happiness I get from giving,” she says, sitting beside a big blue bag brimming with yarn (纱线). “Until I die, I will be knitting,” Matsouka says. Her knitting needles click through her expert fingers, her nails painted red. “It brings me joy to share them.”
4. What did the scarves begin as?
A. Presents to acquaintances. B. Initiatives for fundraising.
C. Donation to a refugee camp. D. Stock for children’s shelters.
5. What can be inferred about Matsouka from paragraph 4?
A. She yields to her severely impaired vision.
B. She wakes up every morning due to facial pain.
C. She continues knitting despite her health challenges.
D. She is only rewarded with drawings from her daughter.
6. Which of the following words fail to describe Matsouka?
A. Resilient and reserved. B. Optimistic and generous.
C. Persevering and passionate. D. Responsible and sympathetic.
7. What message does the article mainly convey?

Today, concrete production accounts for roughly 8 percent of global carbon emissions, which is about a quarter of all industry carbon emissions. Fortunately, the ancient Romans might have taught us a thing or two about manufacturing concrete that lasts for thousands of years.
A new study has strictly analyzed the raw materials and energy demands of the ancient recipe of Roman concrete, revealing some useful ways to improve modern cement (水泥). Surprisingly, researchers found that producing Roman concrete requires more water and more greenhouse gas emissions than commonly used concrete today. But while the initial energy costs may be higher, it may not need to be replaced or repaired as often.
It’s hard to compare the longevity of Roman concrete to modern concrete, because today, many concrete buildings and structures are reinforced with steel. As steel rusts (生锈), it expands, forcing any surrounding concrete to crack and degrade in as little as a decade. By comparison, ancient Roman concrete is capable of restoring itself. This means that when cracks appear in the cement, they are naturally glued back together when water leaks in. That’s part of the reason ancient Roman seawalls have lasted for centuries, despite the constant erosion (侵蚀) of seawater.
Daniela Martinez, lead author and engineer of the University of the North in Columbia acknowledges that longer-lasting cement structures “can only partially balance out increased demand for new material,” but Roman manufacturing methods may also hold other environmental benefits.
Roman concrete produces far fewer dangerous air pollutants, possibly because the limestone, the main ingredient of Roman concrete, is burned using clean wood, not fossil (化石) fuels. According to recent models, using Roman cement techniques could reduce harmful gas emissions by up to 98 percent compared to modern methods. “There are a lot of lessons that we can draw from the Romans. If we can incorporate their strategies with our modern innovative ideas, we can create a more sustainable built environment.” says Martinez.
8. How does the author present the background of the study?
A. By giving examples.
B. By providing statistics.
C. By defining a concept.
D. By describing a scene.
9. What can be inferred about Roman concrete?
A. It has a short service life.
B. It needs regular maintenance.
C. It proves sustainable over time.
D. It requires low initial energy costs.
10. Which word can best describe the property of ancient Roman concrete?
A. Ever-lasting. B. Self-healing. C. Easy-cutting. D. Safe-guarding.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Green Living, A New Path.
B. Carbon Crisis, A Modern Issue.
C. Magic Power, A Roman Mystery.
D. Ancient Recipe, A Possible Solution.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. B 11. D

Chinese scientists have developed a new refrigeration method that solves a long-standing challenge in cooling technology. Published in Nature, the study responds to rising energy demands in applications ranging from food preservation to data center cooling.
Traditional vapor-compression systems consume vast amounts of electricity and rely on harmful refrigerants. In China, refrigeration accounts for nearly 20% of the nation’s electricity use and 7.8% of its carbon emissions (碳排放). While solid-state cooling avoids harmful gases, it suffers from poor heat transfer, limiting its real-world application.
Led by Professor Li Bing from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the research team overcame this by combining solid cooling effects with liquid flow. They used a common, non-toxic salt whose dissolution (溶解) in water absorbs large amounts of heat. Conversely, applying pressure causes the salt to come out and release heat. Cycling this pressure achieves continuous cooling.
“Unlike traditional solid methods, where heat moves slowly, our system integrates the refrigerant and heat-transfer medium into a single liquid,” Li said. “This solves the ‘impossible triangle’ — achieving low pollution, strong cooling, and fast heat transfer all at once.”
Lab tests showed a temperature drop of nearly 30°C in just 20 seconds at room temperature, and up to 54°C at higher temperatures — significantly outperforming existing solid coolers. A prototype cycle achieved a cooling capacity of 67 joules per gram with nearly 77% efficiency. The system also proved stable, reversible, and instantly responsive to pressure changes.
“This technology moves beyond traditional refrigeration principles,” Li added. “By turning the coolant into a fluid, it opens the door to high-performance, zero-emission cooling for homes and industry.”
He noted the method’s strong high-temperature performance makes it an ideal candidate for heat management in next-generation AI computing facilities. While engineering challenges remain, especially in achieving rapidly switchable pressure cycles, the principle could be adapted to other materials for diverse cooling needs.
12. What is the main problem with traditional solid-state cooling systems?
A. They transfer heat poorly. B. They produce harmful gases.
C. They fail at high temperature. D. They use too much electricity.
13. What is the key innovation of the new cooling method?
A. Using salt instead of chemical refrigerants.
B. Increasing pressure inside traditional systems.
C. Replacing pressure cycles with continuous flow.
D. Combining solid cooling with liquid heat transfer.
14. Why does the author mention the “impossible triangle” in the text?
A. To highlight the value of the new system.
B. To illustrate the design of the new system.
C. To explain why old systems are still in use.
D. To show the limitations of previous systems.
15. What does Li Bing see as a promising application of the new technology?
A. Preserving food in supply chains. B. Replacing traditional home refrigerators.
C. Cooling future AI data centers. D. Achieving rapidly switchable pressure cycles.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. A 15. C

It was New Year’s Day. I made a resolution to find my stray (走失的) dog, Puppy-Rocky. In the morning, I could hear icy rain knocking the windows. I said a quick prayer for Puppy-Rocky. He was out there somewhere in the storm, and I could just feel it. Sure, it had been three months since he’d gone missing, but I still had faith. It was the season for miracles (奇迹).
That fall, Puppy-Rocky, my sweet dog, had disappeared from my parents’ house in California. He had been staying with them while I was between apartments. At the time, I lived and worked in New York City. I was staying with friends until I signed my lease (租约) on a new place. Puppy-Rocky had gotten out of my parents’ house two days before I was set to fly back home to pick him up.
My mom and I spent that entire visit searching for him. Mom was the family’s resident “realist”, which meant she spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. “He’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found him,” she said. I rolled my eyes. Mom always supported me, but this time she doubted. She could have done with a little more faith!
Besides, though I couldn’t explain it, I believed I’d see my Puppy-Rocky again. His barks never faded away. He’d been homeless when I first met him, a naughty little dog that had survived all on his own. If any dog could do the impossible, it was my Puppy-Rocky. Even after I returned to New York City without him and the weeks stretched into months, deep down I had this feeling that we’d be reunited.
Now, home again for the holidays, I was determined to pick up my search. I grabbed Puppy-Rocky’s carrier, loaded it into the car, and then asked my mom to drive me to the shelter for the homeless dogs, hoping he’d been found.
“Dave, you have to be realistic,” my mom said as we headed to the garage. “He’s been gone too long. You’re not going to find him.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Don’t you believe in New Year miracles?” I asked.

When I stepped into the last room of the shelter, a familiar bark came into my ears.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
“Don’t you believe in New Year miracles?” I asked. Rolling the eyes, Mom climbed into the driver’s seat, mumbling to herself, “There’s just no way. You’re not going to find him. Be realistic.” “Mom! It’s my Puppy-Rocky! Promise! I’m sure I will see him again!!!” I kept yelling on the way to the shelter. Upon arriving there, we walked through rows of cages from room to room. I carefully examined dogs of all colors, shapes and sizes. None! All our efforts were in vain. Hopeless as it might be, I went on searching, followed by my mom, who had been trying to prepare me for the worst.
When I stepped into the last room of the shelter, a familiar bark came into my ears. Following the sound, I spotted a little dog wagging the tail towards me. It was him? I double-checked it… Exactly, my Puppy-Rocky! It was bonier than ever before. Excited tears welling up, I immediately opened the cage door. He jumped into my arms as usual. I held him closely as Mom looked on, mouth wide open. It was indeed the season of miracle: three months after separation, we reunited. Puppy-Rocky’s return did let me, and especially my mom, firmly believe: we can do with more faith!

A. The eye is bigger than the belly. B. Giving is better than accepting.

Living in a busy city apartment, I learned to move through shared spaces quietly. ____16____ It wasn’t that I disliked others; keeping to myself just seemed easier. Independence mattered to me, and needing no one felt like part of being a grown-up.
____17____ Without warning, the power went out. The building fell into complete darkness. I sat alone in my apartment, the cold air pressing in as my phone went dead. The silence was familiar. Yet this time, it seemed different. Less comforting. More exposed.
A soft knock broke the stillness. It was my neighbour from 3B, someone I recognised but hardly knew. She held a candle and mentioned that a few residents were gathering in the hallway and invited me to join them. I hesitated. Staying alone felt safe, but something felt unsettled. ____18____
People sat on the floor, sharing blankets, tea, and quiet conversation. I listened more than I spoke. The man I had once assumed was unfriendly turned out to be a retired doctor with a dry sense of humour. ____19____ I realized how easily distance can turn into detachment (疏离).
When the lights finally returned, the hallway looked the same, but it felt different. I didn’t suddenly become outgoing, nor did I abandon my need for space. ____20____ It’s about knowing when to let them in. Now, when I step into the elevator, I don’t automatically lower my eyes. Sometimes, I look up.
