A
I am expecting twins. I am not having a baby shower This would not be unusual if I lived outside of the United States, but here in America it has raised some eyebrows.
I like hosting parties and do so often. All sorts of parties can be fun. But baby showers are structured affairs, making guests go through awkward games and end up sitting in a lengthy circle so the mother-to-be can open presents. The food is strange. And to top it off, the whole event is out of respect for the mother-to-be’s nine-month teetotalism
I am not a good actress, nor am I good at showing enthusiasm. It is not an easy thing to open dozens of gifts in a short time and make each giver feel they have been properly and uniquely thanked. And that’s a shame though my gratefulness is sincere. It is really a headache.
After everyone’s presents are opened, I find that these showy gifts are rarely of any practical use. What will the mother possibly do with four tutus Instead, they can give me what I really want: hand-me-downs, the tried and true clothes and books that need to be cleaned out of other people’s closets. Three moms at my church have offered me stuff their kids have outgrown, and they are so much better than the stuff gained in a baby shower. I get things I’ll actually use, and they leave out the work of wrapping presents and a trip to the organization, Goodwill.
My house is small; I do not have room for the unnecessary junk. Not having a baby shower is the single best way to escape the flood. In theory, getting lots of presents sounds like a good thing, but it also means there are much more things to organize, maintain, and clean.
Don’t spend money on me. Instead, spend time with me. Or I can have a party, but, like a normal party, where we eat normal food and have normal conversations and everyone doesn’t sit in a circle, and watch me wonder if I’m making remotely the right facial expression to convey my thanks. For that I would be grateful indeed.
36. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Giving birth to twins.
B. Avoiding a baby shower.
C. Participating in a baby shower.
D. Holding an unusual baby shower.
37. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. People find the baby shower boring.
B. The baby shower is resisted by more and more people.
C. The baby shower can make both guests and the mothers-to-be uncomfortable.
D. Both guests and the mothers-to-be should not drink alcohol in the baby shower.
38. What does the author find annoying when opening presents?
A. Feeling unwilling to share the presents.
B. Being shameful to receive others’ presents.
C. Having to pretend to like all the gifts and each guest.
D. Struggling to open presents and express thanks properly.
39. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A. The great variety of the gifts.
B. The necessity of wrapping presents.
C. The real practicality of the gifts.
D. The goodwill of the showy presents.
40. What message does the author convey?
A. She values genuine connection over tradition.
B. Baby showers are awkward and impractical.
C. She prefers used gifts to maintain her house.
D. Americans overemphasize baby shower gifts.
B
Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I’ve ever had: Be bold and brave — and mighty (强大的) forces will come to your aid.
Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.
Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize.
Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,” said Tim. “I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet(子弹) — and stopped him cold.”
Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.
So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities—and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.
41. Why was the author sometimes unable to reach his goal in the past?
A. He faced huge risks.
B. He lacked mighty forces.
C. Fear prevented him from trying.
D. Failure blocked his way to success.
42. What is the implied meaning of the underlined part?
A. Swallow more than you can digest.
B. Act slightly above your abilities.
C. Develop more mysterious powers.
D. Learn to make creative decisions.
43. What was especially important for Tim’s successful defense in the football game?
A. His physical strength.
B. His basic skill.
C. His real fear.
D. His spiritual force.
44. What can be learned from Paragraph 5?
A. Confidence grows more rapidly in adults.
B. Trying without success is meaningless.
C. Repeated failure creates a better life.
D. Boldness can be gained little by little.
45. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To encourage people to be courageous.
B. To advise people to build up physical power.
C. To tell people the ways to guarantee success.
D. To recommend people to develop more abilities.
C
New research suggests that pandas may be at risk of dying out because they are too comfortable. Experts say too much happiness can stop the bears from searching for new mates, leading to a decline in genetic diversity that is crucial for long-term survival.
Environmentalists have long believed that building roads or homes near the bears may threaten their survival by “reducing or fragmenting (分裂) their natural habitats”, The Times reported. But the new research challenges this assumption, suggesting that a “modest degree of discomfort and fragmentation” may actually help preserve panda populations.
The research was conducted by scientists from Michigan State University. It concluded that pandas fail to wander off in search of new mates if they find their habitat too comfortable, resulting in a lack of vital genetic diversity. When pandas become too content in an unspoiled environment, they tend to stay put, leading to inbreeding and a weakened gene pool. This lack of genetic exchange can make the species more vulnerable to diseases and environmental changes.
For their study — outlined in a paper in the journal Conservation Biology — the team looked at genetic diversity and spread among a Chinese panda population. The ideal level of perfectly livable habitat was found to be only 80% of an area, with the remainder either too harsh or too affected by human activity.
The experts argued that pandas should ideally “be happy enough to thrive, but not so content that they don’t want to move around and find new mates”. Their conclusions about what The Guardian described as this “sweet spot” are in line with the so-called Goldilocks principle: that there can be just the right amount of something. The concept has been applied to a wide range of disciplines, from developmental psychology to economics and engineering.
Claudio Sillero, a professor of Conservation Biology at Oxford University, told the newspaper that the new findings could have implications beyond panda conservation. “Most large animals that eat meat live in increasingly fragmented landscapes,” said Sillero, who was not involved in the research, “It may well be that the messy nature of their relationship with human efforts tempts more animals to scatter or travel further, and might result in greater genetic connectivity and enhanced population persistence.”
The most recent count of pandas found that there were more than 1,800 left in the wild, putting them on the list of vulnerable, but not endangered, species.
46. What do we learn from new research about pandas?
A. They are losing habitat due to the building of roads and houses.
B. They may cease to exist as a result of enjoying too good a life.
C. They may not adapt to the fragmentation of their habitat.
D. They have stopped seeking new mates for reproduction.
47. What can we conclude from the new research by scientists at Michigan State University?
A. Housing development near pandas may threaten their survival.
B. The increased panda population is attributed to the fragmentation of their habitat.
C. Pandas’ natural habitats are becoming less suitable for reproduction.
D. The long-time belief regarding panda conservation may be misleading
48. Why does the author mention the Goldilocks principle in Paragraph 5?
A. To compare pandas’ preferences to a psychological concept.
B. To illustrate a principle of ideal balance of panda conservation.
C. To highlight the need of perfectly livable habitat for pandas.
D. To suggest the practical application of panda conservation.
49. What can the new findings do according to Professor Sillero?
A. Shed light on the conservation of most large meat-eating animals.
B. Help remove pandas from the list of endangered species.
C. Show the complexity of interactions between humans and animals.
D. Help discover new ways for the conservation of pandas.
50. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Panda Genetic Diversity Improves
B. Perfect Reserves for Pandas
C. Discomfort May Benefit Pandas
D. Habitat Destruction Threatens Pandas

Many people, some even at a very young age, set the goal of graduating from college. One American woman in Texas waited a long time for her chance to reach that goal.
The woman is 84-year-old Janelt Fein. She raised five children and then had a career as a secretary until she retired at age 77. But even then, she was not ready to take it easy and rest during a well-earned retirement. “I didn’t have anything to do in retirement and I didn’t think that playing bingo was up to my speed. 1. — I’m really disappointed with the plot of that movie.
— __________. I thought the storytelling was quite appealing.
A. You’re right B. I see your point
C. That’s a shame D. I’m not so sure
A. You’re right你说得对;B. I see your point我明白你的意思;C. That’s a shame真遗憾;D. I’m not so sure我不太确定。 I thought the storytelling was quite appealing可知,答话人并不认同对方对剧情的负面评价,I’m not so sure常用于委婉地表达不同意。
2. The true __________ of friendship lies not in never having arguments, but in always being willing to forgive.
A. extent B. quest C. core D. emotion
根据“not in never having arguments, but in always being willing to forgive”可知,此句是在解释友谊最根本的特质是什么,core“核心,最重要的部分”能准确表达这一含义。
3. At one point I made up my mind to talk to Uncle Sam. Then I changed my mind, ______ that he could do nothing to help.
A. to realize B. realized C. realizing D. being realized
4. __________ in a traffic jam, he had to stay in the car for nearly 8 hours.
A. Was caught B. Be caught C. Catching D. Caught
5. There are many fountains in the city square, the largest of __________ is a popular tourist attraction.

A
I am expecting twins.
B 37. C 38. D 39. C 40. A
根据第一段画线词“it”前面的“I am expecting twins. I am not having a baby shower (宝宝派对). This would not be unusual if I lived outside of the United States(我怀上了双胞胎。我不打算举办宝宝派对。如果我住在美国以外的地方,这并不会显得不同寻常)”可知,this指代前文“不举办宝宝派对”,画线词it与this指代同一内容,B项表示“避开宝宝派对。”,符合题意。
【37题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“But baby showers are structured affairs, making guests go through awkward games and end up sitting in a lengthy circle so the mother-to-be can open presents. The food is strange. And to top it off, the whole event is out of respect for the mother-to-be’s nine-month teetotalism.(但宝宝派对流程死板,宾客得玩尴尬的游戏,最后还要长时间围成一圈,等着准妈妈拆礼物。
根据第三段中的“It is not an easy thing to open dozens of gifts in a short time and make each giver feel they have been properly and uniquely thanked. It is really a headache.(短时间拆开几十份礼物,还要让每一位送礼人都感受到自己收到了得体、专属的感谢,这件事十分困难,实在让人头疼。)”
根据第四段主旨句“I find that these showy gifts are rarely of any practical use.(我发现这些花哨的礼物几乎没什么实用价值。)”以及后文“Three moms at my church have offered me stuff their kids have outgrown, and they are so much better than the stuff gained in a baby shower.(教堂里三位妈妈把自家孩子穿小的物品送给我,这些东西远比派对收到的礼物好用。)”
末段中的“Don’t spend money on me. Instead, spend time with me.(不用为我花钱,多花时间陪陪我就好。)”是本文主旨句,结合后文“Or I can have a party, but, like a normal party, where we eat normal food and have normal conversations and everyone doesn’t sit in a circle, and watch me wonder if I’m making remotely the right facial expression to convey my thanks. For that I would be grateful indeed.(我也可以办聚会,但要像普通聚会一样,吃平常的食物、随意聊天,不用所有人围坐一圈,不用我费劲琢磨该摆出什么样的表情来表达谢意。若是这样,我会由衷感激。)”可知,作者反感流程繁琐、以礼品为核心的传统宝宝派对,不希望亲友花钱购置华而不实的礼物,更看重人与人轻松真诚的陪伴交流。A项表示“相较于传统习俗,她更珍视真挚的情感联结。”,精准概括作者想要传递的核心观点。
C 42. B 43. D 44. D 45. A

They are potential powers we possess:energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas-even physical strength greater than most of us realize.
Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones.
Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight.
So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities—and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed. 故选A。

根据第一段中的“New research suggests that pandas may be at risk of dying out because they are too comfortable.(新研究表明,大熊猫可能面临灭绝风险,原因是它们的生存环境太过舒适。)”
根据第二段中的“Environmentalists have long believed that building roads or homes near the bears may threaten their survival by “reducing or fragmenting (分裂) their natural habitats”, The Times reported. But the new research challenges this assumption, suggesting that a “modest degree of discomfort and fragmentation” may actually help preserve panda populations.(据《泰晤士报》报道,环保人士长期以来认为,在大熊猫栖息地附近修建道路或住宅会 “缩小、割裂它们的自然栖息地”,进而威胁其生存。但这项新研究对上述观点提出质疑,研究表明,“适度的生存干扰与栖息地碎片化”实际上或许有利于大熊猫种群的存续。)”可推出,以往有关大熊猫保护的固有认知可能具有误导性。
【48题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“The experts argued that pandas should ideally “be happy enough to thrive, but not so content that they don’t want to move around and find new mates”. Their conclusions about what The Guardian described as this “sweet spot” are in line with the so-called Goldilocks principle.(专家认为,理想状态下大熊猫所处环境应当“适宜生存、繁衍兴旺,但又不能安逸到不愿四处活动、寻觅新配偶”。《卫报》将这种状态称作 “最佳平衡点”,专家们得出的相关结论与所谓的金发姑娘原则相契合。)”可知,作者提及该原则,用来阐释大熊猫保护需要达到的理想平衡状态。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中的“Claudio Sillero, a professor of Conservation Biology at Oxford University, told the newspaper that the new findings could have implications beyond panda conservation. “Most large animals that eat meat live in increasingly fragmented landscapes,” said Sillero, who was not involved in the research, “It may well be that the messy nature of their relationship with human efforts tempts more animals to scatter or travel further, and might result in greater genetic connectivity and enhanced population persistence.”(牛津大学保护生物学教授克劳迪奥·西莱罗向该报表示,这项新研究成果的意义不止局限于大熊猫保护领域。并未参与本次研究的西莱罗称:“大多数大型食肉动物所处的栖息地正日益碎片化。动物与人类活动之间这种错综复杂的共存关系,很可能促使更多动物扩散开来、进行更远距离迁徙,进而提升种群基因交流水平,增强种群存续能力。”)”可知该研究成果能够为大多数大型食肉动物的保护提供思路。
【50题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“New research suggests that pandas may be at risk of dying out because they are too comfortable. Experts say too much happiness can stop the bears from searching for new mates, leading to a decline in genetic diversity that is crucial for long-term survival.(新研究表明,大熊猫可能面临灭绝风险,原因在于它们的生存环境过于安逸。专家称,生存条件太过优越会让大熊猫不再主动寻觅新配偶,进而造成基因多样性下降,而基因多样性对物种的长期存续至关重要。)”可知,完全舒适的栖息地会阻碍大熊猫迁徙、降低基因多样性;适度的不适与栖息地碎片化有利于熊猫繁衍。C选项“不适或许有益于大熊猫”为最佳标题。
