Being sedentary()throughout the workday has long been criticized for its effects on
health, especially in terms of heart function.Actually, sitting too much is tough on your brain as
well.A recent clinical trial published in Journal of the American Heart Association noted that
extended sedentary behavior is a risk factor for chronic disease, even for those who exercise
regularly outside of the workday. To determine the effects of being more active at a job,
researchers set up active workstations at an employee wellness center, focusing on standing
desks,treadmills,and step machines,and using them for 45 to 55 minutes a day.
After asking 44 participants to use these workstations for four days, researchers reported
there was no significant difference in typing ability-meaning that just because you're walking or
stepping, work performance doesn't sputter-but scores on cognitive function tests improved
with each subsequent day.
Researchers acknowledged that the short timeframe is a limitation of the study,so it's unknown
whether these cognitive improvements would continue in the long term. However, they did conclude
that it seems active workstations could be a fundamental way to decrease sedentary time, providing
advantages for cardiovascular(心血管的)conditions as well as cognitive performance.
What if your boss isn't ordering stair steppers and treadmill desks, though? The good news
is that setting a schedule where you move more often can give you a brain boost-no matter what
your workstation looks like.
For example, just walking briskly around an office for five minutes improves health
outcomes related to cardiovascular function, which could have a beneficial effect on mental
function.Even short bursts of movement can literally improve the function of your brain. And
the biggest advantages tend to come with activity that is structured, planned, and repeated,
rather than just moving around whenever you have the chance.
Because of that, creating a consistent routine at your workplace for physical activity can be
crucial for keeping your brain sharp, according to Loretta Graziano Breuning,PhD,author of
Habits of a Happy Brain."Being active during a workday on a predictable schedule can get
your brain fired up as that exercise period approaches,"Breuning said.

One day in 1995,a man,named Wheeler,robbed two banks in broad daylight.He didn't
wear a mask and smiled at the camera.Later, police arrested him,but when they showed him
the videos,he stared in disbelief."But I wore the juice,"he mumbled.Apparently,he thought
that rubbing lemon juice on his skin would make him invisible to videotape cameras. After all,
lemon juice is used as invisible ink.Police concluded that Wheeler was not crazy or on drugs-
just incredibly mistaken.
This caught the eye of the psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger. They reasoned
that, while almost everyone holds favourable views of their abilities, some mistakenly assess
their abilities as being much higher than they actually are. This "illusion of confidence"is now
called the Dunning-Kruger effect.
In one study,Dunning and Kruger asked undergraduate students a series of questions about
grammar, logic and jokes, and then asked each student to estimate his or her score overall,as
well as their relative rank compared to the other students.Interestingly,Dunning and Kruger
found that high-achievers underestimated their relative competence, while poor-performing
students estimated that they had performed better than two-thirds of the other students. The
difference is that competent people can and do adjust their self-assessment given appropriate
feedback,while incompetent individuals cannot.
Sure,it's typical for people to overestimate their abilities. The problem is that when people
are incompetent, not only do they reach wrong conclusions and make unfortunate choices but
they are robbed of the ability to realise their mistakes and assess the whole situation. As Charles
Darwin wrote,"Ignorance more frequently produces confidence than does knowledge."
Referring to Dunning and Kruger's research,we may find the key to not ending up like the
witless bank robber.Sometimes we try things that lead to favourable outcomes, but other
times-like the lemon juice idea-our approaches are imperfect, irrational or just stupid. The
trick is to not be fooled by illusions of superiority and to learn to accurately reevaluate our
competence. After all,as Confucius reportedly said, real knowledge is knowing the extent of
one's ignorance.
5.What might be the biggest reason for Wheeler's failed robbery?
A.His own misjudgment.
B.Police's arrest.
C.Ineffective lemon juice.
D.Being caught in the cameras.
6.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.An explanation of the Dunning-Kruger effect.
B.The underlying logic of the Dunning-Kruger effect.
C.The research methods of the Dunning-Kruger effect.
D.The psychological reasons behind the Dunning-Kruger effect.

The annual High School Music Festival was the highlight of my year.As a music teacher,I
never missed a session, always amazed by the extraordinary talents the musical directors inspired
in their students. But this year might be my last visit. With age catching up,my desire for
retirement was growing stronger.
Honestly, there was always a touch of dissatisfaction and envy in my heart as I watched
these school bands, because I had never been able to develop a band to this level.I taught in a
small primary school. My students played beginner music, and they were happy when we
managed to play from the start all the way to the end of a piece, with all the instruments
finishing together. The complexities of full tone, dynamic control, and balance were beyond
their abilities.
As the band opened with their first piece, the striking sound of violins, accompanied by the
lively notes of pianos, set my heart pounding."Wouldn't it be great to be the musical director for
one of these massive high school bands?"I thought as the music transported me.When the last
notes rang out, there was a brief silence before thunderous applause erupted. My aging eyes
scanned()the stage, seeking familiar faces among the performers. But my vision was no
longer sharp enough to recognize anyone.
During the tea break,I headed toward the entrance hall."Miss Jones!"a young man's voice
cut through the crowd.I recognized the concert uniform he was wearing. It was the very violinist
I had been admiring.Puzzled,I searched his face for familiar features. It turned out to be
Bradley,a former student of mine who was difficult to forget.Schoolwork had been hard for
him,and he had struggled through all his subjects. It was a pleasant surprise to meet him here.
We sat down and had a chat.

I remembered the day when he asked to join the
school band.He was so eager, but he had no prior
musical experience.I was hesitant at first, but his
enthusiasm convinced me to give him a chance.I
started from the very basics with him.He practiced
hard, often staying after school to get extra help.It
was a long and difficult journey, but he never gave up.
And now, seeing him as the First Chair in this high
school band,I felt an overwhelming sense of pride and
accomplishment.
I was still smiling as I made my way back to the
music hall.I realized that every student has the
potential to grow and shine, regardless of their starting
point. My small primary school students might not be
as advanced as these high schoolers yet,but they also
could achieve great things with time and dedication.I
gladly decided that I would not retire just yet.I wanted
to continue teaching,to inspire my students just as I
had inspired Bradley, and to see where their musical
journeys would take them.
