Dan Marcanruono, known as Mr. Marc, teaches philosophy and moral thinking at a high school. Before becoming an educator, Mr. Marc worked in healthcare consulting, drove a delivery truck for a food company and worked temporarily in business development. Teaching wasn’t something he had seriously considered until he joined the Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. As part of his scholarship, he was required to teach courses in creative writing to college students. “I don’t think I would have gotten into teaching if I hadn’t gone to that school,” he said.
From his teaching experiences, Mr. Marc quickly realized that teaching requires more than just knowing the subject. One moment that reshaped his view of teaching occurred during his first year when a student lost his father.
The experience made him realize how essential it is to create an environment that assists students facing personal challenges.
When transitioning from teaching college to high school, Mr. Marc admitted that he struggled with constantly having to adapt and come up with new ideas. “Getting accustomed to the workload and courses when it’s all so new to me has been one of the biggest challenges so far,” he explained.
Mr. Marc believes authority doesn’t come from simply having a title. “There’s a lot I can be doing to make students feel confident and capable in the classroom,” he said. By encouraging a sense of teamwork and mutual respect, he aims to create an environment where students feel valued. “I try to get to know my students and then take time during class to talk to them individually,” he added. This approach helps students feel noticed.
“My ultimate goal as a teacher is to help students start to question the things they take for granted or the things they just assume are true about the world,” said Mr. Marc, who describes his teaching journey as a blessing. He acknowledges that his path to teaching was unexpected, but he’s grateful for the experiences he has come across.

(25-26高二下·四川成都·期中)For many freshmen at a Sino-foreign cooperative University, the first semester brings not only excitement but also intense stress. One of the biggest fears is the mandatory Academic English course, which all first-year students must pass. Unlike high school English, this course demands academic writing, critical thinking, and precise language use — skills that many new students are not fully prepared for.
Li Ming, a freshman majoring in Computer Science, still remembers the sleepless nights before the final exam. “I was terrified,” he admitted. “I knew that if I failed, I would have to take a make-up exam during the summer. And if I failed that too, I would have to retake the entire course, which costs 86,800 yuan. That’s almost my whole year’s tuition for just one course!”
The pressure was overwhelming. Li Ming spent every evening in the library, reviewing essay structures and memorizing academic vocabulary. He even asked his tutor for extra feedback on his practice essays. But despite all his efforts, he felt unprepared. On the day of the exam, his hands were shaking as he wrote his argumentative essay. He could barely focus on the reading comprehension section.
When the results were finally released, Li Ming could hardly believe his eyes: he scored exactly 40 out of 100 — the minimum passing grade. He had made it by a hair’s breadth. His roommate, however, was not so lucky. Zhang Wei scored 39, just one point short. Instead of enjoying his summer vacation, Zhang Wei had to return to Suzhou in August for the make-up exam. He spent the whole summer studying while his friends traveled and relaxed.
Looking back, Li Ming feels a chill run down his spine. “If I had made one less correct choice in the multiple-choice section, I would have been in Zhang Wei’s shoes. That single question might have saved me 86,800 yuan. I still get nervous just thinking about it.”
For the University’s freshmen, Academic English is more than just a course — it is a financial and emotional test that stays with them long after the grades are posted.
1.What is the main reason why Li Ming was so anxious about the Academic English exam according to this passage?
A.He thinks he is not good at English.
B.He will not progress to Year 2 if he didn’t pass the exam.
C.He fears the financial consequences if he failed the module.
D.He doesn’t like his English teacher.
2.Describe the emotional progression in a few brief words:
A.Confidence→Success→Pride
B.Fear→Panic→Relief→Lingering fear
C.Excitement→Disappointment→Acceptance
D.Indifference→Interest→Regret
3.According to the passage, which statement is correct?
A.The resit exam fee is 86,800 yuan.
B.Zhang Wei plays game every day so that he didn’t pass the English exam.
C.The school English exam is possibly one of the most important courses at Year 1.
D.After passing the exam, Li Ming felt very confident.
4.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Li Ming Passed the English Exam
B.The Passing Line of the English Exam Is 40
C.We Should Study Harder in Order to Prevent Failing an Exam
D.A Freshman’s Fear about a School English Exam

Does Practice Really Make Perfect?
The famous saying “practice makes perfect” is very popular. But is this saying really true? Can enough practice truly make you an expert? Many scientists have tried to find the answer.
A famous theory comes from Malcolm Gladwell. In his book Outliers, he said that if a person practices for about 10,000 hours, they can become an expert in their field. This is called the “10,000-Hour Rule.” Gladwell used the famous band The Beatles and Microsoft founder Bill Gates as examples. He believed that all of them put in over 10,000 hours of practice before they became very successful.
However, many people think this rule is too simple. Psychologist Anders Ericsson argues that Gladwell misunderstood his research. First, Ericsson points out that 10,000 hours is just an average number. Some people may need less time, while others need much more. More importantly, he says that how you practice is more important than how long you practice. Instead of just repeating a whole skill over and over, we should do “deliberate practice.” This means we should practice a small, specific part of a skill very carefully, with a clear goal. Though it is harder, it helps more with improvement.
Besides practice, other studies show that other factors are also very important for success. A recent study from Princeton University showed that practice only explains about 26% of the reasons why people become experts. What about the other reasons? Natural talent matters a lot. For example, many baseball players have amazing eyesight that allows them to see the ball much faster than normal people. What’s more, your IQ, your personality, and even your luck also play a big part in your success.
In short, practice will not make you perfect alone, but “deliberate practice” can help you get much better. If you want to become an expert, you should set realistic goals, stay motivated, and ask others for advice. At the same time, it is healthy to accept that talent and good luck also matter. Most importantly, enjoy what you do!
1.What does Anders Ericsson think about the “10,000-Hour Rule”?
A.Everyone needs exactly 10,000 hours to succeed.
B.He completely agrees with Gladwell’s theory.
C.The type and quality of practice is more important.
D.Only Bill Gates and The Beatles followed this rule.
2.Why does the writer mention baseball players in Paragraph 4?
A.To show that baseball is a very difficult sport.
B.To prove that natural talent is also important.
C.To tell us they do more practice than normal people.
D.To explain why they train outside their comfort zone.
3.What is the writer’s main idea about becoming an expert?
A.Hard practice alone is enough to make a perfect expert.
B.Natural talent is the only thing that leads to success.
C.Luck and IQ are more important than practice.
D.Success comes from practice, talent, and luck together.
4.What is the best title for this text?
A.How to Become a Baseball Star
B.The Magic of the 10,000-Hour Rule
C.Does Practice Really Make Perfect?
D.Why Bill Gates Became Successful

(25-26高一下·湖南衡阳·期末)Developing healthy study habits is key to academic success, especially in high school. With so many distractions and responsibilities, it’s easy to fall into unproductive routines. 1 These habits will not only boost your grades but also reduce stress and build confidence in your learning abilities.
Create a consistent study space.
2 It doesn’t have to be a fancy desk or a quiet library, but it should be a place where your brain associates with focus. Keep it organized, free from unnecessary distractions like phones or loud music, and use it only for studying. Over time, this space will signal to your brain that it’s time to work, making it easier to get into the zone.
Break tasks into small, manageable steps.
Large assignments or exam reviews can feel overwhelming at first. 3 Instead of thinking “I need to study for the math final,” break it down into smaller tasks: “Review Chapter 3 formulas” or “Solve 10 practice problems on quadratic equations.” Checking off these small wins will keep you motivated and prevent procrastination.
Use active learning techniques instead of passive reading.
Simply rereading notes or textbooks is often ineffective for long-term memory. 4 Try summarizing key ideas in your own words, teaching concepts to a friend (or even an imaginary audience), or creating flashcards for tricky terms. These methods force your brain to engage with the material, making it more likely to stick.
Take regular breaks and prioritize rest.
Many students believe that studying for hours without stopping is the best way to learn. However, our brains need time to rest and process information. 5 Short breaks — like walking around, drinking water, or stretching — can refresh your focus. Additionally, getting enough sleep each night is just as important as studying; a tired brain struggles to retain new information.
A.Instead of tackling everything at once, divide big goals into tiny, specific tasks.
B.The good news is that you can build these habits with a few simple, intentional changes.
C.A dedicated study space helps train your brain to switch into “learning mode” quickly.
D.To make studying more effective, swap passive habits for active ones.
E.You don’t need a perfect setup to start building a productive study routine.
F.Overworking yourself can lead to burnout, which harms both your grades and your health.
G.Active learning takes more effort at first, but it pays off in better understanding and recall.
E
(25-26高二下·广东深圳·期末)Have you ever heard someone being described as conscientious (认真负责的)? 1 Experts have found that conscientious people are more likely to do well in their work and have good relationships with other people.
What does conscientious mean?
2 When you do something, you want to do it to the best of your ability. It also means not giving up when things get tough and doing tasks without being asked to do them. You can spot a conscientious person because they follow the rules, do their homework early and to the highest standard they can. They stick with tasks even when they’re hard, and are responsible and careful. They might help others without being asked.
Don’t give up.
Carrying on with tasks and staying motivated is a key part of being conscientious. 3 “Sticking with things doesn’t mean working non-stop. It means finding ways to keep moving forward, even if it’s a small step at a time,” says child psychotherapist Laura Gwilt. When something gets tricky, it’s important to fight the urge to quit. “When you continue instead of giving up, you show yourself that effort matters as much as the outcome,” says Gwilt. “ 4 Each time you finish something challenging, you feel proud, and that builds confidence.”
5
Another step you can take to be more conscientious is to stick with the plans that you make. If you have arranged to go to a new club or you have planned to do your homework when you get home from school, make it happen. Following through on your plans also shows your friends, family and teachers that you are reliable and trustworthy — important skills that are very useful as you grow up.
A.Make plans and stick with them.
B.Conscientiousness is a skill or quality.
C.Show reliability to your friends and family.
D.It can be tricky, but there are ways to make it easier.
E.So there is an urgent need for you to focus on all your mistakes.
F.It helps you understand that mistakes are a normal part of learning.
G.Being conscientious means wanting to do your work or your duty well.

The night before the school talent show, ten-year-old Anna could not sleep. She kept thinking about the stage, the lights, and the hundreds of people watching. In two days, she was supposed to play the piano in front of the whole school. Anna had practiced for months, but now she felt afraid.
“Don’t worry, Anna,” her grandmother had said earlier that evening. “The stage is just a big room with lights. You can do it.” But Anna was not so sure. She had never performed in front of so many people. What if she made a mistake? What if everyone laughed?
In the morning, Anna went to the music room to practice. As she sat down at the piano, she noticed a small note on the music stand. It was from her best friend, Lily. “Anna, you are the best pianist I know. I believe in you. Break a leg!” Anna smiled, but her hands were still shaking.
The afternoon came. The talent show was about to begin. Anna could hear the music teacher calling names. She was the seventh performer. As she waited, she thought about running away. The other performers looked so confident. Why couldn’t she be like them?

Sophie Williams had always loved drawing. Ever since she was little, she would spend hours sketching (素描) anything that came to mind — animals, landscapes, and even imaginary creatures. When her art teacher, Mrs Reynolds, announced that the school was hosting an art competition, Sophie felt both excited and nervous. It was her chance to show everyone what she could do, but the thought of competing against other students made her anxious. “What if my drawing isn’t good enough?” she wondered aloud one evening while working on her sketch.
Her elder brother, Daniel, overheard her and gave her some advice. “You don’t need to worry about the result,” he said. “Just focus on doing your best. Remember, art is about expressing yourself, not about being perfect.” His words made Sophie feel a little better, but as the competition deadline approached, she still felt unsure. She spent days working on her drawing, trying to make every detail just right. She chose to draw a large oak tree in a field, with the sun setting behind it. The colors were vibrant (鲜艳的), and she added delicate details to the leaves and grass.
When Sophie brought her finished drawing to school, she saw other students’ work displayed on the walls. There were paintings, collages (拼贴画), and digital art — all of them impressive. She shook with tension as she placed her drawing alongside the others. “Maybe mine isn’t good enough after all,” she thought, feeling small compared to the talent around her. Mrs Reynolds noticed her hesitation and smiled, “Your work is beautiful, Sophie. Remember, it’s not about comparing yourself to others — it’s about doing what you love.”
The next day, the school’s lecture hall was packed with students, teachers, and parents for the awards ceremony. Sophie’s heart raced as the judge began to announce the winners. She wasn’t expecting her name to be called, but deep down, she hoped for a small chance.

Life is like a marathon and persistence 2 (be) the secret to individual success. 【答案】
1.in 2.is 3.to fall 4.waiting 5.bravely 6.works 7.created 8.a 9.how 10.his
故填is。
be bound to do sth.

【答案】1.C 2.B 3.C 4.D

根据第二段中Li Ming所说的话“I knew that if I failed, I would have to take a make-up exam during the summer. And if I failed that too, I would have to retake the entire course, which costs 86,800 yuan. That’s almost my whole year’s tuition for just one course! (我知道如果我没通过,就得在暑假参加补考。如果补考再没过,我就得重修整门课程,费用是86800元。这几乎是我一整年的学费,却只为了这一门课!)”可知,李明如此焦虑是因为他担心考试不及格会带来的经济后果。
2.推理判断题。根据第二段中“I was terrified (我当时非常害怕)”、第三段中“On the day of the exam, his hands were shaking as he wrote his argumentative essay. He could barely focus on the reading comprehension section. (考试当天,他手都在发抖,写议论文时几乎无法集中注意力。阅读理解部分更是难以专注。)”、第四段中“He had made it by a hair’s breadth. (他勉强做到了。)”和第五段中“Looking back, Li Ming feels a chill run down his spine. (回想起过去,李明感到一阵寒意从脊背爬起。)”可知,文章展现的是李明从考前恐惧、考试时恐慌、得知通过后如释重负,到事后回想仍心有余悸的情绪变化过程,“恐惧→恐慌→解脱→余悸”概括了这一过程。
3.细节理解题。根据第一段中“One of the biggest fears is the mandatory Academic English course, which all first-year students must pass. (最大的担忧之一是必修的学术英语课程,所有大一学生都必须通过这门课。)”和最后一段“For the University’s freshmen, Academic English is more than just a course — it is a financial and emotional test that stays with them long after the grades are posted. (25-26高二下·新疆喀什·期末)Does Practice Really Make Perfect?
根据第三段中“More importantly, he says that how you practice is more important than how long you practice.(更重要的是,他说你如何练习比练习多长时间更重要)”可知,Anders Ericsson认为练习的类型和质量比单纯的时长更为关键。
根据第四段中“Natural talent matters a lot. For example, many baseball players have amazing eyesight that allows them to see the ball much faster than normal people. What’s more, your IQ, your personality, and even your luck also play a big part in your success.(天赋至关重要。例如,许多棒球运动员拥有惊人的视力,这让他们能比普通人更快地看清飞来的棒球。此外,智商、性格,甚至运气,也在你的成功中扮演着重要角色)”可知,作者在第四段提及棒球运动员是为了举例论证天赋在成功中的重要作用。
3.推理判断题。 根据最后一段“In short, practice will not make you perfect alone, but “deliberate practice” can help you get much better. If you want to become an expert, you should set realistic goals, stay motivated, and ask others for advice. At the same time, it is healthy to accept that talent and good luck also matter.(总之,仅靠练习无法让你臻于完美,但“刻意练习”却能助你大幅提升。

【答案】1.B 2.G 3.D 4.F 5.A
1.根据上文“Have you ever heard someone being described as conscientious (认真负责的)?(你有没有听说过有人被形容为“认真负责的”?)”
2.根据上文“What does conscientious mean?(“尽责”是什么意思?)”
3.根据上文“Carrying on with tasks and staying motivated is a key part of being conscientious.(持续完成任务并保持动力是尽责的重要部分)”以及后文““Sticking with things doesn’t mean working non-stop.

Paragraph 1:
When Anna’s name was called, she walked onto the stage on shaking legs. The bright lights hurt her eyes, and the audience looked like a dark ocean in front of her. She sat down at the piano and placed her fingers on the keys. For a moment, she forgot everything. Then she thought of her grandmother’s words and Lily’s note. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and began to play. The first few notes were soft, but as the music went on, her hands became steady and her heart grew calm.
Paragraph 2:
When the music ended, the whole hall burst into warm applause. Anna opened her eyes and could not believe what she saw — everyone was standing and clapping for her. Lily was jumping up and down in the first row, shouting “Anna! Anna!” Tears ran down Anna’s face, but they were happy tears. She stood up, took a small bow, and whispered “Thank you” to the audience. That night, Anna learned that courage is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to do something even when you are afraid.

With every passing second, Sophie sat nervously in her seat. She stared at her shoes, too afraid to listen closely to the names being read out. Several first and second prizes went to students whose art she had admired greatly. Just as Sophie prepared to accept that she would win nothing, the judge mentioned a special creativity award. “This piece captures warm peace of nature with sincere feelings — the winner is Sophie Williams!” Shocked, Sophie froze for a second before walking up to the stage unsteadily. She held the prize tightly, her eyes shining with joyful tears.
Walking off the stage, Sophie was greeted with a big hug from Mrs Reynolds. Her brother Daniel also waved wildly from the crowd with a wide smile. Sophie realized her brother and teacher were right. Art was never a competition against others. What mattered most was pouring her true feelings into every line and color. Later, she kept her award on the desk beside her sketchbook. From then on, she drew without anxiety, simply enjoying the pleasure of expressing herself through art every single day.
