My father is a man of few words. He never praises me or shows his love easily. When I failed exams or felt down, he never gave me warm comfort (安慰). I often thought he was cold and didn’t care about me at all.
Last week, I took part in an important speech competition. I was nervous and afraid of speaking in public. I told my father about my worry, but he only said, “Just do your best.” His short answer made me sad and disappointed. I thought he simply didn’t understand how I felt.
On the night before the competition, I still felt worried. I lay in bed thinking about the speech competition the next day. I woke up at midnight and saw my father sitting quietly at my desk. He was writing something carefully in the soft light. I thought he must have been busy with work, so I just turned over and went back to sleep.
The next morning, I found a small piece of paper in my bag. It was from my father. He had written down many useful suggestions for my speech: keep eye contact (目光接触), speak slowly, and stay calm. At the end, he wrote: “I believe in you, my boy.”
At that moment, my heart was full of warmth. I realized my father’s love was not expressed in sweet words. It was hidden in his quiet help and silent encouragement. He stayed up late to write those suggestions because he cared, even though he never said it aloud.
True love is quiet but strong. It is always around us if we feel it with our hearts.
5. The boy thought his father was cold at first because his father ________.
A. never spoke to him
B. was busy working all day
C. never praised or comforted him

A. The boy won the speech competition at last.
B. The father showed his love in a quiet way.
C. The father was good at giving speeches.
D. The boy didn’t care about his father anymore.
8. What’s the best title (标题) for the text?
A. Small Actions, Big Progress B. Sweet Words, True Care
C. Few Words, Deep Love D. Hard Work, Good Results
C 6. C 7. B 8. C

Hello everyone, I’m Darina. I came to China to learn Chinese. Now I am a student of Hebei University. I like traveling around China. So today we come to Xiong’an.
Established in 2017, Xiong’an New Area is more than just a place of high technology. It is also an example of green areas in China. Today, let’s see the beautiful views here.
When people talk about places in China, they usually think of tall buildings in Beijing or Shanghai. Yet in Xiong’an, the story is totally distinct. Rivers, lakes, trees, and grass can be seen everywhere. Blue and green spaces will account for 70 percent of the area, enabling people here to always stay close to nature.
Since its establishment, Xiong’an New Area has been focusing on the protection and management of the local environment, especially in Baiyangdian Lake, a major wetland in northern China. The government has outlawed all polluting businesses. Now I’m in Baiyangdian. It is an important ecological system (生态系统) in Xiong’an New Area. It is also known as the “pearl of North China”
As the environment gets better, Baiyangdian has become an important habitat for migratory birds (候鸟). Walking around the lake, beautiful water birds can be seen everywhere.
In the future, people here may only need to walk 3 kilometers before they get into a forest, and 300 meters to a park. Green Xiong’an is on its way.

①It was established in 2017.
②It is an example of tourist places in China.
③It has many tall buildings like Beijing and Shanghai.
④People here can stay close to nature.
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①④ D. ③④
10. What does the underlined word “distinct” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Similar. B. Amazing. C. Simple. D. Different.
11. What is the “pearl of North China”?
A. Xiong’an. B. Baiyangdian. C. Beijing. D. Shanghai.
12. What’s the best title for this text?
A. The Green Development of Xiong’an B. The Tall Buildings in Beijing and Shanghai
C. The First Green City in China D. The Important Habitat of Birds—Baiyangdian
C 10. D 11. B 12. A
第二段指出“Established in 2017”(①正确),第三段指出“enabling people here to always stay close to nature”(④正确),因此①④正确。
第三段中“distinct”所在句为“Yet in Xiong’an, the story is totally distinct.”,结合前文对比北京上海的高楼,说明雄安的情况“不同”,因此“distinct”意为“different”。
第四段指出“Baiyangdian...is also known as the ‘pearl of North China’”,说明白洋淀是“华北之珠”。
全文围绕雄安新区的绿色发展展开,因此“The Green Development of Xiong’an”是最佳标题。
D
“If you learn math, physics, and chemistry well, you can go anywhere without fear.” This saying became popular in China because of Chen Jingrun (1933-1996), a famous mathematician. This year marks 30 years since he passed away.
Chen’s greatest achievement was working on Goldbach’s conjecture The conjecture says that every even number (偶数) greater than two can be written as the sum (和) of two prime numbers (质数). Although it appeared easy, no one could prove it. However, in 1973, Chen published a paper that nearly proved it. His achievement was the closest that anyone had ever gotten. It shocked the whole math world. A foreign mathematician once wrote to him, “You have moved mountains.”
Chen was not only smart — as his world-shaking achievement clearly shows — but also very hard-working. He worked in a tiny room of only six square meters and used mountains of scratch paper (草纸). One time, he was so lost in thought that he walked into a tree and apologized to it! He once said, “Climbing the heights of science is like climbing Mount Qomolangma. The timid (胆小的) and the lazy can never experience the joy of victory.”
Chen loved his country deeply. In 1979, he visited the United States. Foreign scientists offered him a good job with high pay, but he turned it down. He said, “My country is still poor, so I should go back to serve it.” After returning, he gave all his savings — $7,500 — to the country. He believed that Chinese scientists should fight for the honor of their nation.
Chen Jingrun lived a simple life and spent his whole life doing research to win honor for China. His spirit still encourages many young people today to study science and serve their motherland.
13. How does the writer begin the text?
A. By asking a question. B. By using a saying.
C. By giving an example. D. By showing a reason.
14. What does the underlined word “It” refer to (指代) in Paragraph 2?
A. Chen’s achievement. B. Goldbach’s conjecture.
C. Chen’s ability. D. Chen’s speech.
15. What can we infer (推断) from Chen Jingrun’s words in Paragraph 3?
A. Interest can be the best teacher of science work.
B. Success often comes from hard work and courage.
C. Mountain climbing is as difficult as math problem-solving.
D. Smart people are more likely to experience the joy of victory.
16. What is the purpose of writing the text?
A. To explain Goldbach’s conjecture. B. To introduce a great Chinese scientist.
C. To show China’s math development. D. To encourage teenagers to study math.
B 14. A 15. B 16. B

If“如果”、When“当……
根据句意,良好礼仪可以改变、塑造人的品格,make a difference to“对……产生影响”,符合句意。call up“打电话”、try out“试验”、bring good luck to“带来好运”代入后句意不通。

Chinese calligraphy (书法) is an important part of traditional Chinese culture. Calligraphy started in China and spread to other parts of Asia with Chinese culture. It has a history of over 3,000 years.
Calligraphy is the art of writing Chinese characters (汉字) with a brush in accordance with specific rules (按照特定规则). When you practice calligraphy, it is important to pay attention to the changes of the strokes (笔画) and the spaces between characters.
There are many famous calligraphers in history, such as Wang Xizhi and Yan Zhenqing. Different calligraphy works can show different calligraphers’ feelings and personalities (个性). Today, they can be seen on the walls of offices, shops, hotels and many other places.
“If I live in China, I will become a calligrapher rather than a painter for sure,” the world-famous master of art, Picasso said. He fell in love with Chinese calligraphy as soon as he saw Zhang Daqian’s works.
Calligraphy brushes are the main tools for practicing calligraphy. They are usually made from the hair of different animals. Practicing calligraphy takes a lot of time and many people take lessons to learn it. During the lessons, they can learn how to write different strokes of Chinese characters. If you are interested in it, you may start practicing with a teacher right away.
