Life Lessons from Tough Wild Plants
Plants that grow in difficult natural environments can teach us important lessons for growing up.
Cacti live in dry deserts where rainfall is rare. They store water inside their thick bodies and wait patiently for rain. This tells us to stay patient and refuse to give up when we meet failures in exams or daily life.
Pine trees grow on cold mountain tops. Heavy snow covers their branches every winter, but they never turn yellow or die. Their lasting green colour teaches us to believe in our own value, no matter how bad our grades or moods are.
Bamboo grows fast but stays gentle during strong winds. It bends with typhoons instead of resisting hard wind. After the storm disappears, it stands upright again. When we argue with friends or face heavy study pressure, we can learn to be flexible instead of being stubborn.
All these plants tell us a simple truth: inner strong spirit is far more important than comfortable living surroundings.
11. What can we learn from desert cacti?
A. To stay confident in cold weather
B. To be patient and never give up easily

Fan Jinshi: Guardian of Dunhuang’s Treasures
Fan Jinshi is widely called the “Daughter of Dunhuang”. She spent almost sixty years protecting the ancient cave relics in Dunhuang, Gansu Province.
She was born in Beijing and grew up in Shanghai. After finishing university in 1963, she chose to work in remote Dunhuang instead of staying in modern big cities. Back then, life there was extremely hard. She lived in a small wooden house, and there was no electricity or running water. Even the drinking water tasted strange.
The caves held thousands of square metres of wall paintings and painted sculptures. Wind, sand and too many tourists slowly damaged these precious cultural treasures. In the late 1980s, Fan Jinshi came up with a creative idea: digitalize all cave art. She led her team to take high-definition photos of every painting day after day. After over thirty years of continuous hard work, they built the “Digital Dunhuang” website in 2016.
Now people all over the world can enjoy Dunhuang’s art online without visiting the real caves and causing damage. Fan Jinshi is already old, but she still keeps working for relic protection. She believes protecting cultural treasures is her lifelong duty.

Two Ways to Live a Meaningful Teenage Life
Lots of middle school students often feel confused and ask themselves: How can I live a meaningful life? We can find two clear answers from famous selfless role models.
The first way is to devote yourself to a great public cause. Some people give up comfortable city life and spend their whole life protecting national cultural treasures or helping poor mountain areas. Fan Jinshi protected Dunhuang relics; Zhang Guimei built free high schools for poor girls in mountain villages. They put all their energy into things that help thousands of strangers. Their lives are full of value because they serve the whole country.
The second way is to send small warmth to people around you every single day. You do not need big achievements to live a valuable life. Lei Feng was just an ordinary soldier, but he used all his spare time to help others. He carried heavy bags for elderly people, repaired bikes for neighbours and gave his own money to poor children. The Willow and the Oak
An old oak tree and a willow tree grew side by side beside a village river.
The oak tree was tall and thick, with hard, solid branches. It always looked down on the soft willow next to it. “Look at me,” the oak said proudly every day. “My branches are strong enough to hold heavy fruit and stand against any wind. You are weak and thin; your branches bend even in light wind. You are useless.”
The willow never argued with the oak. It just grew quietly beside the river, bending its thin branches gently when wind blew.
One autumn, a terrible storm hit the village. Strong winds blew nonstop for hours. The oak tree held its branches stiff and refused to bend. After a loud crack, half of its thick trunk broke and fell into the river. It lost most of its branches and could not grow fruit the next year.
The willow bent low as the storm passed. It let the wind flow through its thin branches freely. When the storm ended, it stood straight again, completely unhurt.
An old villager walked by and looked at the two trees. “Being hard and stiff does not always mean powerful,” he said. “Gentle persistence can help you get through hard times safely.”
22. Why did the oak tree look down on the willow?
A. The willow could not grow fruit
B. The willow’s branches were soft and easy to bend
C. The oak grew much shorter than the willow
D. The oak lived much longer than the willow
23. What happened to the oak tree during the storm?
A. All its leaves fell off
B. Half of its trunk broke
C. It bent gently and stayed safe
D. It grew many new branches
24. What does the underlined word “persistence” in the last paragraph mean?
A. giving up quickly
B. keeping going without breaking
C. being proud of oneself
D. growing tall and strong
25. What is the best title for the story?
A. How to Grow Oak and Willow Trees
B. Strong Branches Bring Great Pride
C. Gentle Persistence Is True Power
D. Storms Are Bad for All River Plants

We also share stories of role models like Fan Jinshi and Lei Feng in club meetings, to learn their spirits of quiet devotion.

作文
Never Give Up
When I was in Grade 8, I had great difficulty learning English. I couldn't memorize new words well and often failed my exams. I felt so upset that I wanted to give up.
Later, my English teacher encouraged me and offered me useful learning tips. I kept reading English aloud every morning and took notes carefully in class. Whenever I met problems, I asked my teacher and classmates for help. Little by little, my English improved a lot.
From this experience, I learn that difficulties are not as scary as they seem. As long as we keep trying and never give up, we will achieve our goals in the end.

A. To stay confident in cold weather
B. To be patient and never give up easily

Two Ways to Live a Meaningful Teenage Life
Lots of middle school students often feel confused and ask themselves: How can I live a meaningful life? We can find two clear answers from famous selfless role models.

His life was short, but his spirit influences Chinese people for generations.

25. What is the best title for the story?

B. Strong Branches Bring Great Pride
C. Gentle Persistence Is True Power
D. Storms Are Bad for All River Plants

Our School’s Volunteer Club
Our Grade 9 set up a volunteer club at the start of this term. The club helps students find small meaningful things to do in daily school life.
Every weekend, club members take part in different volunteer activities. Some students visit the old people’s home to chat with the elderly and help clean their rooms. Some students work in the city library to organize books for readers. Others plant small pine and bamboo trees in the community park.
Our club teacher often tells us that we do not need great jobs to live meaningful lives. The volunteer work helps us understand that small acts of care can bring big warmth to society. We also share stories of role models like Fan Jinshi and Lei Feng in club meetings, to learn their spirits of quiet devotion.
At the end of each month, we write short articles about our volunteer experiences. We all learn that as long as we devote ourselves to helping others, our teenage life will be full of special meaning.

55. What does the club teacher want students to understand through volunteer work?

54. What activities do club members take part in every weekend?
55. What does the club teacher want students to understand through volunteer work?
56. Would you like to join this volunteer club? Why or why not?
