For most of my childhood, I had only one dream — to leave my small town and see the world. I grew up in a quiet village in southern China, where everyone knew each other and life moved at a slow, steady pace. By the time I was eighteen, I had a chance to be an exchange student in a small town in the United States, and I jumped at it.
My first month in the U.S. was a blur of new experiences. I stayed with a kind host family, attended a local high school, and tried to make sense of a culture that was very different from my own. I remember the first time my American host mother asked me, “How was your day?” and I had no idea what to say. In my family, we rarely shared our daily feelings in such a direct way. I would say, “It was fine,” and change the subject. She looked a little confused but said nothing.
Slowly, I began to notice more differences. At school, students called teachers by their first names, and they often asked questions in class. In my Chinese school, we were expected to be quiet and listen. I felt uncomfortable at first, but soon I realized that asking questions was a sign of curiosity, not disrespect. My American classmates asked because they wanted to learn, and their teachers welcomed the questions.
But the biggest change was inside me. I had thought that my Chinese way of doing things was the “right” way. After a few months, I understood that there is no single right way to live. Both cultures had beautiful traditions, and both had things they could learn from. I started to enjoy the openness of American culture — the way people smiled at strangers, the way they said “thank you” for small things. At the same time, I missed the deep family bonds and the quiet strength of my own culture.
When I returned home after a year, my friends noticed something different about me. I was more open, more willing to share my thoughts, and more curious about the world. I had not given up my Chinese identity; I had simply added something new to it. As my grandmother said, “Travel does not take away where you come from. It only makes you richer in where you belong.”

A. They were showing off.
B. They were being rude.

For thousands of years, people have looked at nature for inspiration. From bird wings inspiring airplanes to lotus leaves inspiring self-cleaning glass, the science of learning from nature is called biomimicry. Today, one of the most exciting examples of biomimicry is the development of bio-inspired spider silk.
Spider silk is one of the strongest natural materials known to science. It is five times stronger than steel of the same weight, and it can stretch up to five times its original length without breaking. Yet it is completely natural and breaks down safely in the environment. Scientists have long dreamed of using spider silk to make bulletproof vests, airplane parts, and even surgical thread.
The problem is that spiders are hard to farm. Unlike silkworms, which live peacefully together, spiders are territorial and often eat each other when kept in groups. So scientists cannot simply raise millions of spiders and collect their silk. For a long time, this made large-scale production of spider silk impossible.
Recently, however, scientists have found a clever way around this problem. They have studied the genes that spiders use to make silk and have placed these genes into other organisms, such as bacteria, yeast, and even goats. These modified organisms can then produce spider-silk proteins in large amounts. The proteins are collected and spun into fibers in the lab.
In 2024, a team of scientists in the United States created a new type of bio-inspired silk that is not only strong and stretchy, but also conducts electricity. This means it could be used in wearable electronics, such as smart watches and health sensors. “We are entering a new era of materials science,” said Dr. Emily Harper, who led the study. “Nature has already solved many problems; we just need to learn from it.”
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Spider silk is the strongest material in the world.
B. Scientists are learning from nature to create new materials.
C. Spiders are difficult to keep as farm animals.
D. Wearable electronics are becoming popular.
12. Why can't scientists simply farm spiders for silk?
A. Spiders produce too little silk.
B. Spiders are territorial and may eat each other.
C. Spider silk is not strong enough.
D. Spiders do not live in groups naturally.
13. How have scientists solved the spider-farming problem?
A. By raising spiders in special groups.
B. By collecting silk from wild spiders.
C. By placing spider genes into other organisms.
D. By making artificial silk without using genes.
14. What is special about the new bio-inspired silk created in 2024?
A. It is very cheap to produce.
B. It can conduct electricity.
C. It is used in airplane parts.
D. It is the same as natural spider silk.
15. What does Dr. Emily Harper mean by her words?
A. Nature has already solved many of our problems.
B. Materials science is more important than other sciences.
C. Wearable electronics are not useful.
D. Bio-inspired silk is the strongest material in the world.

Dolphins are often called the second-smartest animals on Earth, after humans. They live in the sea, but their behavior is surprisingly similar to ours in many ways. They play, they communicate, and they even seem to have names for each other.
In a recent study, scientists at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland recorded the calls of a group of bottlenose dolphins off the east coast of Scotland. They found that each dolphin had its own special whistle — a unique sound pattern that other dolphins used to call it. When a mother dolphin was separated from her calf, she would whistle the calf’s special sound, and the calf would answer with its own whistle. The scientists believe this is the first time that animals have been shown to use sounds like names.
Dolphins are also great problem-solvers. In laboratory tests, they have learned to understand symbol-based language. When a trainer shows them a picture of an object, such as a ball or a hoop, the dolphin can point its nose at the real object. This shows that dolphins can understand the idea of “symbols” — something that represents something else. Only a few animals, including great apes, have shown this ability.
Even more interesting is how dolphins work together. They often hunt in groups, and each dolphin has a special role. Some dolphins blow bubbles to drive fish toward other dolphins, who then catch the fish. The dolphins seem to plan their moves before they start, almost like a team of football players running a play. Scientists who study dolphins are now beginning to wonder just how intelligent these sea animals really are.
Some scientists believe that dolphins are so smart that we should treat them differently from other sea animals. They suggest that dolphins should not be kept in small pools for shows, just as we would not keep a human child in a small room. Whether or not we agree, one thing is clear: the sea is full of minds we are only beginning to understand.
16. What is the main discovery about dolphins in the study in Scotland?
A. They can swim very fast.
B. They have names for each other.
C. They live in large groups.
D. They like to play with balls.
17. How do dolphins show they can understand symbols?
A. They make sounds.
B. They point at real objects after seeing pictures.
C. They follow the trainer's orders.
D. They play with hoops and balls.
18. What does the underlined word “drive” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Push. B. Catch. C. Eat. D. Follow.
19. How do dolphins hunt in groups?
A. Each dolphin has a special role.
B. They all blow bubbles together.
C. They hunt alone but at the same time.
D. They ask the trainer for help.
20. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Dolphins are more intelligent than humans.
B. Dolphins are surprisingly smart sea animals.
C. Dolphins should not be kept in pools.
D. Dolphins are similar to whales.

The night before the school talent show, ten-year-old Anna could not sleep. She kept thinking about the stage, the lights, and the hundreds of people watching. In two days, she was supposed to play the piano in front of the whole school. Anna had practiced for months, but now she felt afraid.
“Don’t worry, Anna,” her grandmother had said earlier that evening. “The stage is just a big room with lights. You can do it.” But Anna was not so sure. She had never performed in front of so many people. What if she made a mistake? What if everyone laughed?
In the morning, Anna went to the music room to practice. As she sat down at the piano, she noticed a small note on the music stand. It was from her best friend, Lily. “Anna, you are the best pianist I know. I believe in you. Break a leg!” Anna smiled, but her hands were still shaking.
The afternoon came. The talent show was about to begin. Anna could hear the music teacher calling names. She was the seventh performer. As she waited, she thought about running away. The other performers looked so confident. Why couldn’t she be like them?

C

【答案】
Dear Mr. Zhang,
I'm writing to share some suggestions for improving our school cafeteria.
First, I think the cafeteria needs more food choices. Many students get tired of the same dishes every day, so adding more variety would make lunchtime more enjoyable. We hope to see some local snacks and more vegetable options.
Second, I suggest that the cafeteria extend its opening hours, especially during exam period. Many students want to come back for dinner after evening self-study, but the cafeteria now closes too early.
Finally, it would be great to set up a feedback board where students can write down their suggestions each week. This would help the cafeteria improve more quickly.
I hope these suggestions will be helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】范文
Paragraph 1:
When Anna’s name was called, she walked onto the stage on shaking legs. The bright lights hurt her eyes, and the audience looked like a dark ocean in front of her. She sat down at the piano and placed her fingers on the keys. For a moment, she forgot everything. Then she thought of her grandmother’s words and Lily’s note. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and began to play. The first few notes were soft, but as the music went on, her hands became steady and her heart grew calm.
Paragraph 2:
When the music ended, the whole hall burst into warm applause. Anna opened her eyes and could not believe what she saw — everyone was standing and clapping for her. Lily was jumping up and down in the first row, shouting “Anna! Anna!” Tears ran down Anna’s face, but they were happy tears. She stood up, took a small bow, and whispered “Thank you” to the audience. That night, Anna learned that courage is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to do something even when you are afraid.
