2 What does the expression "breaks her heart" show about Della?
Is her heart really broken?
It shows that Della feels very sad because she does not have enough money. Her heart is not really broken. It is just a way to show her strong feelings.
Answer the questions.
3 Why does the writer say the gifts are "useless"?
Because Jim sells his watch, he cannot use the chain. Similarly, Della sells her hair, so she cannot use the combs. The gifts cannot be used, but they still show love.

“The miser and his gold” is a famous fable written by Aesop. The main characters are a miser, a thief and a passerby.
This story takes place in the miser’s garden. The miser loves gold so much that he buries all his gold in the garden and goes to see it every single day, but he never spends a little of it. One day, a thief finds the secret gold and steals all of it. When the miser finds his gold gone, he cries with great pain. Then a passerby sees him and learns the whole thing. He tells the miser to put a stone in the hole instead, because unused gold is just as useless as a stone.
I think this clever story teaches us a valuable lesson about money. It tells us that money means nothing if we only hide it and never use it wisely.
