Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river.
People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to
communications and trade.New York City, for example,is near a large harbour at the
mouth of the Hudson River.Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people
to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time.Boom towns grow
from nothing almost overnight. In 1896,Dawson,Canada,was unmapped wilderness(
)But gold was discovered there in 1897,and two years later,it was one of the largest
cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.
Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris.
People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed
hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet
snow that could fall without warning. An avalanche (once closed the path, killing 63
people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult
trip.Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold,4,000 got rich.About 100 of these stayed
rich men for the rest of their lives.
But no matter how rich they were,Dawson was never comfortable.Necessities like
food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all
been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling
down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson
City as quickly as they had come.Today, people still come and go-to see where the
Canadian gold rush happened.Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City-its
present population is 762.

Growing up in Puerto Rico, our family was no different from so many others. My
parents got married after my father came back when the war ended. Both of my parents
were struggling with the hard economic realities of that time. But somehow, they found
time to cherish those cultural values that shaped our everyday life.
In our daily life,we celebrated together with our friends or family members every
birthday, every graduation, and all holidays with music and dancing, and typical foods.
When we visited our family in the countryside-a trip that took about two hours in a car,
with five children fighting as to who would get a window or the front seat-we would break
into a song, and somehow the trip would turn into one full of happiness and fun.We would
sing not only interesting children's songs but also beautiful love songs-songs about the
love of the country though we didn't understand the meaning of the words most of the
time.
I came to Philadelphia for the first time in 1973 to do a residency (in family
medicine.I remember the many hours of work.I was facing issues of life and death and
suffering the clear social unfairness and issues of poverty and race. These were all
aggravated by my feeling of cultural differences.
An important turning point in my life happened one Saturday night when I attended a
concert of a Puerto Rican singer and composer Antonio Caban Vale. The music showed my
familiar rhythms, and the words spoke to my heart.I found a space to express, celebrate,
and share my culture in Philadelphia. Therefore,I believe diversity is seen as an advantage
and not as a disadvantage. As a Puerto Rican,I am a mixture of races and I believe in my
strength because of this.

When Rise of the Planet of the Apes was first shown to the public last month,a group
of excited animal activists gathered on Hollywood Boulevard. But they weren't there to
throw red paint on fur-coat-wearing film stars.Instead,one activist,dressed in a full-body
monkey suit, had arrived with a sign praising the filmmakers:"Thanks for not using real
apes(猿)!”
The creative team behind“Apes”used motion-capture(动作捕捉)technology to
create digitalized animals, spending tens of millions of dollars on technology that records an
actor's performance and later processes it with computer graphics to create a final image(
)In this case,one of a realistic-looking ape.
Yet "Apes"is more exception than the rule.In fact,Hollywood has been hot on live
animals lately. One nonprofit organization, which monitors the treatment of animals in
filmed entertainment,is keeping tabs on more than 2,000 productions this year.Already,a
number of films, including Water for Elephants,The Hangover Part II and Zookeeper,
have drawn the anger of activists who say the creatures acting in them haven't been treated
properly.
In some cases,it's not so much the treatment of the animals on set in the studio that
has activists worried;it's the off-set training and living conditions that are raising concerns.
And there are questions about the films made outside the States, which sometimes are not
monitored as closely as productions filmed in the States.
1-4

Sam Watts was a 37-year-old fisherman living and working in Canada. One day,Sam
planned to head out into the Pacific at 9 am and work straight through until 5 pm the next
day.Joining Sam would be his crewman,24-year-old Tom Buck.
Although Sam had been warned that a storm was coming, there was little that would
keep him from going. As he sailed through the waves some 120 kilometres from land,Sam
let out his three-kilometre-long fishing line. The storm was gaining strength on land but
had yet to reach the men far offshore. That changed around 1 am.Waves rocked the small
boat, which began to turn sideways like an amusement park ride."Get us out of here!"
Tom screamed to Sam."Let's go back!"
With the winds and waves kicking up,the boat began to fill with water.Sam and Tom
tried to pull in the fishing line together, but the high waves filled the boat with water,
forcing Sam to make a hard decision. He cut the line, losing thousands of dollars'worth of
equipment and fish in the sea.He then pointed the boat towards a port five hours away.
Sam then called his boss,William Fox,to report his position.
With dawn coming,Sam spotted the rise of the mountains on the horizon. He was
figuring out a route through the dangerous waters when suddenly the motor stopped."I
couldn't believe it,"Sam said."We were 24 kilometres off the coast, and the motor died."
High waves raised and dropped the boat, sending the men crashing into the sides."William,
William!"Sam yelled into the radio."If you're coming to get me,come now!"
“We're coming!”William shouted back.
Paragraph 1:
Shortly after, the radio died and the wind continued to blow straight offshore,
driving the men farther out to sea.
Paragraph 2:
The next morning,Sam spotted a fishing boat in the distance.

It与call up之间是逻辑上的
59,are squeezed
Ding
Jianhua是该句的主语,“a44-year-old man from Hangzhou city
The
clay material。
responsibility。

Dear Jim,
How is everything going there?
Recently,I just have finished my science subject which is
about ()cean Conservancy. It is said that our oceans are facing
unprecedented pollution.Abundant marine resources are being
depleted, and artificial waste kills countless ocean lives every year.
There are two main reasons for these problems.First of all,
the discharge of untreated industrial waste water from coastal
industries is the main cause of serious pollution of coastal marine
water quality.Second, overfishing in the fishing industry destroys
the ocean life chain. Therefore,I think the government should
strengthen the supervision of the coastal enterprises and set up the
closed season to ensure the fish breeding.
Yours,
Li Hua
