worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high

something she loves:nursing. She chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Ministry Saint
Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close
to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids.Jenifer
received great support from her family as she worked to car her degree:Her husband
worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the
children at times.
Through it all,she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors.
Jennifer sacrificed(to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and
missing important events to study."Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick

You're out to dinner. The food is delicious and the service is fine. You decide to leave a
big fat tip. Why?The answer may not be as simple as you think.
Tipping, psychologists have found,is not just about service.Instead, studies have
shown that tipping can be affected by psychological reactions to a series of different factors
from the waiter's choice of words,to how they carry themselves while taking orders,to
the bill's total.
Even how much waiters remind customers of themselves can determine how much
change they pocket by the end of the night.
"Studies before have shown that mimicry (brings into positive feelings for the
mimicker,"wrote Rick van Baaren,a social psychology professor."These studies show
that people who are being mimicked become more generous toward the person who
mimics.”
So Rick van Baaren divided 59 waiters into two groups. He requested that half serve
with a phrase such as,"Coming up!"Those in the other half were instructed to repeat the
orders and preferences back to the customers.Rick van Baaren then compared their take-home
pay.The results were clear-it pays to mimic your customer. The copycat (waiters
earned almost double the amount of tips to the other group.
Leonard Green and Joel Myerson, psychologists at Washington University in St
Louis, found the generosity of a tipper may be limited by his bill. After research on the
1,000 tips left for waiters, cabdrivers, hair stylists, they found tip percentages in these
three areas dropped as customers'bills went up.In fact, tip percentages appear to plateau
(when bills topped 100 and a bill for 200 made the worker gain no bigger
percentage tip than a bill for 100.
"That's also a point of tipping,"Green says."You have to give a little extra to the
cabdriver for being there to pick you up and something to the waiter for being there to serve
you.If they weren't there, you'd never get any service. So part of the idea of a tip is for
just being there.”
8.Besides service, how many other factors affecting the customers'tipping are mentioned
in the passage?
A.1.
B.2.
C.3.
D.4.
1-3
9.These studies show that
A.tipping can be affected by physical reactions to many different waiters
B.the mimic waiters can get almost twice as much money as those who don't
mimic others
C.people who are being mimicked usually tip less to the person who mimics them
D.mimicry makes the mimicker feel bad

of the tip percentages?

I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast,I had
to have cereal, eggs and toast.Others had cakes and candy for lunch, while we had to eat a
sandwich. As you can guess,my supper was different from the other kids'.But at least I
was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as
I did.
My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our
friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day.Other kids
always wore their clothes for days.We reached the height of disgrace because she made our
clothes herself,just to save money.
The worst was yet to come.We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and get up at 7:45
the next morning. So when my friends slept,my mother actually had the courage to break
Child Labour Law.She made us work.I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean
things to do to us.Through the years, our friends'report cards had beautiful colours on
them,black for passing,red for failing.My mother,however,would merely be content
with black marks.None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout.
She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults.Using this as a background,
I'm now trying to bring up my three children.I'm filled with pride when my children think
I am mean because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the
world.

said,“Father,.I have just now told you‘It's a crow.”
After a little while, the old father again asked his son the 3rd time,"What is this?"
At this time some expression of irritation was felt in the son's tone when he said to his
father with a rebuff..“It's a crow,a crow.”
A little while later, the father again asked his son the 4th time,"What is this?"
This time the son shouted at his father,"Why do you keep asking me the same
question again and again, although I have told you so many times'IT IS A CROW'.Are you
not able to understand this?"
A little while later, the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered
diary, which he had maintained since his son was born.

sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was,and I replied to him all 23
times that it was a crow.I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question

ask at your local station or call 131230”可知,C项正

Jennifer
After high school,
,1
Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to
pay her tuition, because there was no extra money set
aside for a college education.(高中毕业后,Jennifer上
Jennifer
C.She supported herself through
She chose the UW-:
Eau Claire program at Misnistry Saint Joseph's
Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue
her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to
class and be home in the evening to help with her
UW-Eau Claire
A.To take care of her kids
A项。
Jennifer sacrificed,
to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her
kids and missing important events to study.(Jennifer
B.Her time with family..(她与家人的时光)
Through it all,she

C.Hard work pays off.(努力会得到回报)符合以
由第五段中的“The results were
clear-it pays to mimic your customer. The copycat
waiters earned almost double the amount of tips to the
other group.”
l0.D推理判断题。由第六段中的“..they found tip
percentages in these three areas dropped as
customers'bills went up.In fact,tip percentages
appear to plateau when bills topped 100 and a bill
for 200 made the worker gain no bigger percentage
tip than a bill for$l00.”
answer may not be as simple as you think.”
“My mother,however,would merely be
content with black marks.”
三段中“..our friends'report cards had beautiful
colours on them, black for passing, red for failing."
She forced us to grow up into educated
and honest adults.”
虽然文章开头说母亲“mean(吝啬、刻薄)”,但并不恨
l6.D根据空前的“nessaging platforms are growing
rapidly,.the hundreds of millions'”以及空后的地方
"76 percent of employees in some western
17.A根据设空前句“Using emojis can add humor and
故选A项。
l8.G根据上句中的“age22to70 and beyond,and
finding common ground in communication style can
l9.B根据上句“Who hasn't received an email so annoying
that it ruined an entire day?”
选项F中的“friendlier communication leads to a

be sorted out and placed in different dustbins.Paper can
be recycled, while leftovers can be collected as food for
pigs or processed as fertilizer for plants.Above all, such
