worried about意为“担心”,贴合人物心情;took after“像”、cared about“关心”(程度较轻)、looked after“照顾”,均无法体现大臣焦虑的情绪,不符合语境。
in person意为“亲自”,贴合国王的行动;in public“公开地”、in silence“沉默地”、in surprise“惊讶地”,均不符合国王独自出行的情节,不符合语境。
pass on意为“传承”;cut off“切断”、throw away“扔掉”、leave out“遗漏”,均和传承的含义相悖,不符合语境。

Do you enjoy reading English newspapers? Here’s a page from today’s newspaper for you!
When there’s a fire outside and smoke is around, we close the doors and windows. Trees do this, too. They have small holes in their leaves. Usually, trees use them to breathe. But during a big fire, some trees would close these holes and “hold their breath”. This keeps trees from getting hurt by the smoke. If smoke gets in the leaves, it will make the leaves sticky (粘的), and the leaves will find it hard to grow.
Brush your teeth and then drink some orange juice. Yuck! Toothpaste has a special thing inside it. It helps to clean your teeth. But it also tricks your tongue (舌头). It makes sweet tastes go away and bitter (苦涩) things taste stronger.
You may think a big, tall room gives you more space to think. But you might get lower scores in one. It makes you focus more on the environment, so you can’t focus well on your test. Instead, a small, quiet one is better.
Some special cells (细胞) in your brain “eat” other cells. But don’t be afraid—the special cells are helping you. They work hard to keep your brain in good condition. For example, when you try to learn something new, they “eat up” some cells to shape your memory. Also, if a cell falls ill, the special cells will “eat” the ill cells to clean them away. This is how your brain stays healthy.
16. What do trees usually do during a big fire according to the newspaper?
A. Grow hard leaves. B. Open the holes in their leaves.
C. Hold their breath. D. Make their leaves sticky.
17. The underlined word “Yuck” in the newspaper means ________.
A. sweet B. salty C. terrible D. delicious
18. According to the newspaper, we’d better do our homework ________.
A. in a big room B. in the bedroom C. with the door open D. in a small quiet room
19. According to the newspaper, we’ll ________ if ill cells in our brain are eaten by others.
A. get badly ill B. have a bad memory C. have a headache D. have a healthier brain
20. Which part of today’s newspaper does the page come from?
A. Study. B. Nature. C. Science D. Health.
C 17. C 18. D 19. D 20. C
表格左上方提到“But during a big fire, some trees would close these holes and ‘hold their breath’.”,这直接说明了在大火期间,树木通常会闭上叶子上的小孔并“屏住呼吸”。
表格右上方提到“Toothpaste has a special thing inside it... It makes sweet tastes go away and bitter (苦涩) things taste stronger.”
表格右下方提到“ Also, if a cell falls ill, the special cells will ‘eat’ the ill cells to clean them away. This is how your brain stays healthy.”,这直接说明了如果大脑中的特殊细胞吃掉生病的细胞,我们的大脑会保持健康。

“You pretty, he ugly (丑). You swan (天鹅), he frog.” This sentence might sound funny in English. But it is lively! Both Chinese and foreigners can understand and enjoy it. It is an example of Chinglish.
It all started when a foreign girl put a sad photo online. It looked like her boyfriend made her cry. Some nice Chinese people tried to cheer her up. They created some funny Chinglish, such as “You swan, he frog.” Many foreigners found it cool and shared it a lot online with funny pictures. After looking into it, they learned that it came from the famous old Chinese story of the beautiful swan and the ugly toad (癞蛤蟆), and got interested in the Chinese stories behind Chinglish.
In the past, people often corrected Chinglish because it was full of grammar mistakes. But now, different styles of speaking English are becoming common and even accepted. For example, the well-known “add oil” has appeared in the Oxford dictionary and people use it widely. The phrase shows Chinese culture. “Once I understood the full meaning, it became much funnier,” said Cody, a young man from New Zealand.
It’s great that more Chinese culture is being shared with the rest of the world. But for young English learners like us, it’s still important to use proper English, especially in tests and at formal events. Proper English keeps things clear.
21. How does the writer explain what Chinglish is in the passage?

⑤Take it easy. ⑥People mountain, people sea.

24. What does the writer want to tell young English learners at the end of the passage?
A. Chinglish can be used in tests. B. Chinglish shows Chinese culture.
C. It’s difficult to learn proper English. D. It’s important to use proper English.
25. The passage mainly wants to tell us ________.
A. Chinese people are friendly B. the story of a foreign girl and her boyfriend
C. foreigners become more interested in Chinglish D. Chinese culture has more influence all over the world
B 22. C 23. D 24. D 25. D

We often see cars running on their own without a human driver in science fiction movies. But in China, this is becoming real.
①These situations might seem funny but can actually be dangerous. If a robot car has a big accident, it can’t decide what to do next on its own and has to wait for someone to come and help. Also, it’s not clear who should be responsible when something goes wrong-the company that owns the robot car, the person who designed it, or both.
②Right now, China is on its way to becoming the world’s largest market for self-driving cars. By 2040, China will have 12 million robot taxis, followed by the US with around 7 million, according to China Daily.
③However, some people are worried about the safety of the technology. In Wuhan, Hubei province, Baidu’s self-driving cars have had some small accidents. Once, one such car stopped in front of a plastic bag and caused a traffic jam. Another time, two cars slowed down to face each other, and did not know what to do next.
④Self-driving cars first caught wide attention in the country in 2015. That year, Volvo, a carmaker from Sweden, tested such cars in Beijing. Later, Chinese businesses like Baidu started making self-driving cars, too.
To improve the safety of self-driving cars, in December 2023, the government took a set of useful actions…

A bit of sunshine is good for us and makes us happy. However, people who lie in the sun for a long time may put themselves in danger, such as sunstroke (中暑).
If you don’t protect your skin in the sun, it’s easier to get spotty (斑点的) and sunburned. There is no such thing as a healthy tan (晒黑). A tan means your skin is hurt by the sun. This makes you look older soon and even have skin cancer.
We can treat skin cancer if we find it early. If you see anything strange on your skin or if a mole (痣) changes shape, size or color, tell your parents and see a doctor right away.
Doctors can help, but it’s more important to protect your skin in your daily life. When you go out, you’d better wear a long-sleeve (长袖的)shirt to keep cool to protect your skin from getting burned. The sun is the strongest between 11 am and 2 pm. We should try to stay in the shade (荫凉) during these hours. And of course, sunscreen cream (防晒霜) is useful. We can put it on any skin that isn’t covered. Use a lot of it before going outside and put more on often, especially after swimming.
46. The passage tells us that a bit of sunshine is ________________, while too much of it is ________________.
47. If your skin is hurt by the sun, you may look older soon, ________ and even ________________.
48. A mole on Tom’s face is getting bigger and darker, maybe he should ________________________.

19. According to the newspaper, we’ll ________ if ill cells in our brain are eaten by others.
A. get badly ill B. have a bad memory C. have a headache D. have a healthier brain
20. Which part of today’s newspaper does the page come from?
A. Study. B. Nature. C. Science D. Health.
