This year’s theme—focus on nature—challenges you to take time to connect with your wild side. Here are some ideas for ways that you can experience nature using all five of your senses. 1 There are lots of tasty treats outdoors—like blackberries, which are easy to find. Take care when searching and always go with a grown-up who knows what is safe to eat. Use this online searching guide: tinyurl.com/SN-searchingguide. 2 Nature creates its own music—think rustling (沙沙声) leaves, running animals and birdsong. Choose somewhere away from street noise and close your eyes. What sounds can you hear? 3 ▲ may happen every morning and every evening but that doesn’t make them any less special. Make a memory of the time by taking note of all the different colors you can see. 4 The sea air has a special smell, like sea-plants and salt. For a moment, you are not just standing on the beach. You feel free and connected to the wide, blue world in front of you. 5 We all know the feeling of standing on the seaside. If you go to the beach this vacation, take off your shoes and socks, close your eyes and let the water run over your feet. Allow your feet to move slowly into the soft sand. 11. What is the topic of the competition? A. Senses. B. Nature. C. Holidays. D. Challenges. 12. Why do we go searching with adults? A. To give the children treats. B. To make sure the food is safe. C. To search the guide online. D. To look for tasty blackberries. 13. Which of the following is the sound of the natural world? A. Waves beating against rocks. B. Kids laughing in the yard. C. Noise coming from the street D. Music played on the piano. 14. Which of the following can be placed in ▲ in Part 3? A. High temperatures. B. Enjoying tea or coffee. C. A sunrise or sunset. D. B Every year on 5 December, the world celebrates World Soil Day, a time to be thankful to the amazing, life-giving world under our feet. Soil helps grow the food we eat, provides homes for millions of tiny animals, cleans our water and even helps fight climate change. Soil is always changing. The soil cycle shows how soil is made and reused. Under the surface of the ground, there’s a whole world busy with life! A single handful of soil can include quite a lot of microorganisms (微生物), which help keep soil airy, so roots can grow and water can run through. Without them, our gardens, farms and forests wouldn’t survive. Healthy soil is like a strong support for life. It holds water after rainfall, prevents floods and stores important nutrients (营养) that plants need to grow. It also catches CO2 from the air. helping to slow down global warming. When soil becomes unhealthy—because of over-farming, pollution or cutting down too many trees—it can lose its nutrients and turn dry. That means less food and weaker ecosystems. Taking care of soil helps protect everything that depends on it—including us! Avoid throwing plastic or chemicals into the ground. Plant trees or flowers to stop soil from washing away in the rain. Every small action helps protect our planet’s soil—and that means helping every living thing on Earth. 16. Why do people celebrate World Soil Day? A. To fight climate change. B. To provide homes for animals. C. To improve water quality. D. To give thanks and care for soil 17. How does the soil become rich? A. Wind, rain and ice always break rocks and soil. B. Micro-organisms always help make the soil airy. C. Micro-organisms recycle dead plants and animals. D. The soil always gives food and nutrients to plants. 18. Which is the right picture for the meaning of roots in paragraph 3? A. B. C. D. 19. What might happen if soil becomes unhealthy? A. It will lead to over-farming. B. It will cause ecosystem problems. C. It will catch CO2 from the air. D. Micro-organisms will increase fast. 20. What is the writer’s opinion in the last paragraph? A. Plant trees and flowers in rainy days. B. Protecting soil helps all living things. C. Soil is important for farmers and animals. D. Plastic and chemicals improve soil quality. C Scientists have discovered that two different kinds of sea animals—orcas (虎鲸) and dolphins—may be working together to hunt for salmon (三文鱼). Orcas and dolphins are both clever, but it’s unusual for two different kinds of animals to cooperate in this way. Orcas, sometimes called “killer whales”, are the largest members of the dolphin family. Orcas are clever and strong, and are famous for hunting in groups. They normally eat salmon—large, strong fish that can grow to be 1 meter long or more. Pacific white - sided dolphins, however, usually hunt smaller fish, and don’t have the ability to catch salmon. Researchers have often seen these orcas and dolphins near each other. Some people thought the dolphins might be using the orcas as protection against other orcas that sometimes eat dolphins. But the recent study suggests that there is more to it. Scientists used drones (无人机), underwater microphones, and cameras to study the animals. They found that although orcas were the ones that actually caught the salmon, dolphins were often leading the chase (追赶). Both animals send out sounds and use the echoes (回声) of those sounds to find objects. The researchers noticed that they took turns sending out clicking sounds for echolocation. The orcas may listen to the dolphins’ echoes to find the salmon. The dolphins use their speed and echolocation to find and chase salmon. The orcas follow the dolphins and use their strength to catch the salmon. Such teamwork could help both: orcas get help finding and catching food and dolphins eat leftovers (剩余物) from the orcas’ meals. Normally, orcas keep other animals away from their food. But they don’t mind when the dolphins stay nearby when they are eating. Not everyone is sure that the animals are working together. The scientists plan to continue their studies. One thing they want to research is whether orcas that work with dolphins have more success catching fish than orcas that hunt on their own. 21. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Orcas help dolphins find food. B. Orcas and dolphins may hunt together. C. Orcas sometimes eat dolphins. D. Scientists study animals’ eating habits. 22. How did the scientists study the animals’ hunting behavior? A. By training them in a laboratory. B. By reading old research reports. C. By living with them in the ocean. D. By using special recording tools. 23. Why do orcas probably work with dolphins? A. Dolphins can stay nearby while eating. B. Dolphins can catch the salmon for them. C. Dolphins can find and chase salmon first. D. Dolphins can protect them while hunting. 24. What do dolphins get from this cooperation? A. They get to eat leftover fish. B. They learn how to catch salmon. C. They become stronger hunters. D. They are protected from all orcas. 25. What will scientists study next according to the passage? A. Whether dolphins get successful experience. B. Whether orcas prefer hunting by themselves. C. Whether other animals catch and eat salmon. D. Whether teamwork leads to more fish caught. D Dear Patrick, I’ve been feeling really upset. I have someone I always thought was my closest friend. We often hang out and laugh together. But lately, I have realized she never shares her personal thoughts or worries about study and life with me. ____26____ What should I do? Sarah Hi Sarah, It’s normal to feel sad when you care about a friend but feel the friendship is not balanced. ____27____ You said you often hang out and laugh together, but your friend doesn’t share her personal worries. ____28____ Some people find it hard to talk about their feelings. This is not magic—it’s physics! The air pressure outside the glass is higher than the pressure inside, which presses the cardboard tightly (紧紧地) against the glass and holds the water in place. The experiment is designed ____37____ (show) how powerful air pressure can be. Last week, our class tried it, and everyone succeeded. We also discussed ____38____ the water doesn’t fall and how air pressure works in our daily lives. During the process, many ____39____ (student) favorite part was the exciting moment when the glass is turned over. Science is not just in books. IV. 阅读表达 (本题6小题,共20分) A 阅读下面短文,完成41至43小题。 (共10分) Four years ago, if you had told me that my weekends would be spent hiking through forests and up mountains, I would have laughed. My life centered on a fixed cycle: work, socialize indoors, sleep and repeat. The closest I got to nature was the view of the garden from my living room window. But all that changed when I came across hiking, quite by accident. It started with a challenge from a friend—to join a hiking group for a day out. Hesitant (犹豫的), but curious, I agreed. The first hike was hard. I was out of breath and my muscles (肌肉) ached, but as I reached the trail’s (路线) end, something within me changed. The beautiful view of nature, the sense of achievement—it was nothing short of amazing. So I decided to hike more, and in doing so, I noticed some changes. My body grew stronger. My stamina (耐力) improved, and those once-hard trails became easier. And my mind grew more relaxed. The stress of city life died down with each step. The “hiker’s high” became my new love. I also discovered a community of hikers. Each hike was a chance to meet new people, share stories and form friendships. These weren’t just people to hike with; they were friends sharing the journey of life. What’s more, we do all this without having to connect to an electronic device (设备). As my connection with nature deepened, so did my love for the environment. I found myself joining in environmental protection efforts, understanding that protecting these beautiful trails was a responsibility. So now, as I tie my shoes for another hike, I feel a sense of excitement for the journey ahead and all it will offer. 41.
