In 1995, the BBC program Tomorrow’s World predicted what the world would look like in2025. Now, as 2025 is over, let’s take a look back and see how accurate the predictions were.
Space mining was predicted to be a well-paying industry. Many companies would rush to explore minor planets near Earth for valuable metals.
But the show also warned about space junk, saying astronauts would find it a headache. What’s the solution? A special gel (凝胶) that could slow down all the floating bits of waste.
Space junk is indeed a big problem. Sadly, the magical gel has yet to be invented. There is no space mining industry yet, either, but that could change. Tom Cheesewright, a futurist, believes that riches beyond our planet are waiting to be discovered.
Another prediction was that a law would force every U. K. hospital to publish a list of its surgeons and their success rates. The top surgeons would become very popular and well-paid. It would make no sense for them to travel to see their patients. Instead, 3D images of patients would be sent to them. A surgeon would operate using “special gloves”. At the patient’s bedside, a robot would perfectly follow the surgeon’s movements.
The show didn’t get it exactly right. But around the globe, robots are already helping with operations. In some countries, long-distance surgery has become a reality.
The show also imagined the future of banking: A woman walks into a bank, complaining there are no human tellers. But she is able to withdraw 100 pounds from her account by scanning a microchip in her arm.
Many banks today have more ATMs than human tellers. Paying with fingerprints or face scans is common. But paying with microchips inside the human body is not yet a reality.
What will the world look like in another thirty years? Whatever you guess, it would be wise to remember what Professor Stephen Hawking said to the program thirty years ago. “Some of the changes are very exciting, and some are frightening. ①Every year, billions of migrating birds fly thousands of miles to reach their seasonal homes. But when birds start these long journeys, how do they know where they’re going?
②In fact, birds use different clues to stay in the right direction. Some of these are familiar to us, while others are still a mystery to humans. Sight and smell are two basic clues that birds use to find their way. If birds have already migrated once, they’ll likely remember familiar landmarks, such as rivers and mountain ranges. Birds that migrate over water, however, have fewer landmarks to guide them. In these situations, they might depend more on their sense of smell. One study found that when researchers blocked the noses of Scopoli’s shearwaters, these seabirds could still fly over land but lost their way when flying over water.
③Birds can also use the sun and stars as guides. To do this, birds that fly during the day use a “sun compass”, which connects their view of the sun’s position in the sky with their internal sense of the time of day. By putting these two pieces of information together, birds can figure out which direction they’re heading.
④However, many birds actually migrate at night, which means that the position of the sun is of little use to them. In this case, birds depend on the position of the stars to find their way. They use this “star compass” by learning the position of the stars around the celestial pole, which is roughly marked by Polaris, known as the North Star.
⑤But what if the sky is cloudy, and birds can’t see the sun, stars or any landmarks? That’s when their more amazing senses come into play. Birds can find their way even without the sun or stars, partly thanks to a sense called magnetoreception (磁感知). This sense allows them to feel Earth’s magnetic fields.
⑥It’s a bit like how we use our eyes to see during the day, but at night, we might use our hands to feel our way around a dark room. Birds use different senses at different times, too. Understanding how these senses work will be very important for protecting birds in the future.
49. How does the writer begin the article?
A. By describing a scene. B. By asking a question.
C. By giving an example. D. By telling a story.
50. From the research on Scopoli’s shearwaters, we can learn that ________.
A. seabirds always lose their way without landmarks
B. blocking seabirds’ ears makes them lose direction
C. land is the only place where seabirds can fly safely
D. birds’ sense of smell plays a role in their migration
51. Which of the following shows the correct structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
52. Why does the writer mention humans’ ways of finding directions?
A. To show that humans have much better senses than birds.
B. To explain that humans need more tools to get directions.
C. To tell that humans and birds share the same living habits.
D. To help readers understand how birds use different senses.

Even in a room with many famous movie stars, Tom Cruise stands out the most. The 63-year-old actor has been nominated for the Oscar four times. Finally, he got his first Oscar on November 16 at the yearly Governors Awards.
“The cinema lets me travel around the world,” Cruise said in his speech when he accepted the award. “No matter where we are from, we laugh, share feelings and hope together in the theater. That’s the power of this art. So making films isn’t just my job—it’s who I am.”
Cruise is famous for doing his own stunts in the Mission Impossible movies. He has got hurt many times because of this. For example, in 2017, he broke his ankle while jumping from one building to another during the filming of Mission: Impossible—Fallout in London.
Though Cruise is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars with a great and diverse career, he never won an Oscar before. He was nominated for Best Actor three times for his roles in Born on the Fourth of July (1989), Jerry Maguire (1996) and Magnolia (1999). He also got a nomination as a producer for Top Gun: Maverick (2022).
Cruise said this lifetime achievement Oscar doesn’t mean he will stop making movies. “I’ll always try my best to help this art form,” he said. “I’ll support new voices and protect what makes cinema special. I hope I won’t break too many more bones!”
Director Alejandro is working with Cruise on a new film. It will come out next year. When giving Cruise the award, he said, “This may be his first Oscar, but it won’t be his last. Tom Cruise doesn’t just make movies— he is part of movies.”
Cruise also works hard to support cinema. Now many people like watching new movies at home, but he insisted on showing Top Gun: Maverick in theaters instead of on streaming services. Famous director Steven Spielberg even praised him for “saving cinema”.
The Academy’s board chooses the Governors Awards based on an artist’s whole career. They are different from the usual Oscars, which are 10,000 members’ choice. Cruise got this award because of “his strong love for film making, his support for theater experiences and his great body of work”.
53. What does the underlined part “Tom Cruise stands out the most” mean?
A. Tom Cruise is the tallest man in the whole room.
B. Tom Cruise is the most nervous actor in the room.
C. Tom Cruise is the most humorous of all the actors.

Dear Jordan,
Sometimes I feel the loneliness within me. It’s not that I don’t have friends— quite the opposite, actually, and that’s what makes it so strange. Even though I am surrounded by a crowd of people, I find it hard to fit in with them. What should I do?
Harry
Dear Harry,
I’ve received your letter and see what you’re saying. Feeling lonely in a crowd may seem strange, but it’s actually very common. Even though we may have loved ones, friends and others around us, it’s still possible to feel completely lonely.
There are several reasons for this. Maybe we feel out of touch with those around us or fear that they don’t or won’t understand what we are going through. No matter why we feel lonely around others, it’s important to know that this is a feeling we can overcome.
Before giving you advice, I suggest that you think about what you’re trying to get out of social activities. Are you lonely and looking for companionship? Are you feeling down and looking for emotional support? Are you trying to make new friends or connect more with the friends you already have?
As you think about how you’re feeling and what you’re looking for, you’ll be able to learn how to meet your needs and build better connections with others. For example, going to a party can be a great way to meet new people and have lighthearted fun. Or if you’re looking for deeper emotional support, you might want to hang out with just one or two people who you know really well.
Here are some tips you can use to strengthen your present connections and make new ones.
Firstly, try to spend time with friends and loved ones. Make plans, put time on your calendar and give them a call. Checking in on each other, spending time together, and giving and receiving support can improve your present connections.
Another suggestion is to find a group of people with common interests. If possible, try to find something in person, such as a book club or a board game meetup.
It would also be a good idea to look for chances to connect online. If you can’t find anything in person, consider joining online communities like Facebook groups, Reddit forums, or support groups.
Last but not least, it’s important to get comfortable with feeling lonely on your path out of loneliness. Wherever you’re along that road, I hope my suggestions can help you.
Jordan

七、阅读与回答问题(本题共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
We all know how Isaac Newton found out the law of gravity. Back in the 1660s, he saw an apple fall from a tree by chance. Newton was a curious person, so he didn’t just walk away. Instead, he wondered why the apple was drawn toward the earth. The rest, as they say, is history.
Hundreds of years later, a similar thing took place with Alexander Fleming, a Scottish scientist who studied tiny living things. One day, he noticed mold growing in a small dish used for experiments. He followed his curiosity and later discovered penicillin (青霉素) .
Like many of you, I heard stories like these when I was growing up. But now, as a researcher myself, I don’t just remember these stories. I also try to learn from them in my daily life.
I am working on better ways to treat cancer. Since I started my job, I have been interested in nanotechnology (纳米技术) . I want to find out how this technology can help people fight cancer. At first, this was a new idea in this field. This curiosity made me study some special antibodies. These antibodies can help the immune system (免疫系统) become stronger to attack cancer cells. At the same time, they hardly hurt healthy cells. The more I learned about this, the more I wanted to find out more.
Finally, my curiosity took me to the Maynard Lab at the University of Texas. This lab is a top place for antibody research. Moving to a new country was a big challenge for me. I also had to get used to a totally different research environment. Nothing was easy in the beginning, but the curiosity encouraged me to get through every difficulty.
Without curiosity, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Curiosity is truly a strong power that helps people make new discoveries. I’m glad that I’ve never been afraid to try new and less common paths. Now, I can’t wait to see where my curiosity will take me next.

四、阅读理解(本题共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A
In 1995, the BBC program Tomorrow’s World predicted what the world would look like in2025.
One thing we can be sure of is that it will be very different, and probably not what we expect.”
46. What does the underlined “it” refer to?
A. A space gel. B. The BBC program.
C. A valuable metal. D. Space junk.
47. Which of the following is TRUE about the 1995 predictions in 2025?
A. Space mining has become a high-paying industry by 2025.
B. People can take out money by scanning a microchip in the user's arm.
C. Robots are helping carry out operations in parts of the world.
D. A special gel has been used to solve the space junk problem.
48. What was Professor Stephen Hawking’s opinion on future changes?
A. The future will be as exciting as we imagine it to be.
B. We will be surprised by what the future holds for us.
C. It is a waste of time to predict what the future will be like.
D. Future changes will not bring any differences to daily life.

C
D. Tom Cruise is the most outstanding among the stars.
54. What can we infer from Alejandro’s words?
A. He thinks Cruise just makes a lot of movies. B. He thinks Cruise may win more Oscars later.
C. He will not work together with Cruise again. D. He believes Cruise has made his best movie.
55. Which of the following is the correct time order of the events?
① Cruise broke his ankle while filming Mission: Impossible—Fallout.
② Cruise got a nomination as a producer for Top Gun: Maverick.
③ Cruise received his first Oscar at the Governors Awards.
④ Cruise was nominated for Best Actor for Jerry Maguire.
A. ④→①→②→③ B. ③→④→②→①
C. ③→②→④→① D. ④→②→①→③
56. In which part of a website can we probably read the passage?
A. Business. B. Lifestyle. C. Culture. D. Travel.

Jordan
57. What can we learn about Harry’s social life?
A. He refuses to join in group activities. B. He has friends but still feels lonely.
C. He feels actually happy to stay alone. D. He never connects with his friends.
58. What does Jordan think about feeling lonely in a crowd?
A. It often happens to people without friends. B. It is a rare feeling that needs special help.
C. It is a common problem that can be solved. D. It appears only when people feel unhappy.
59. To get deeper emotional support, Harry may ________.
A. make plans for later meetings B. join online communities only
C. spend time with trusted people D. give no support to loved ones
60. Which of the following best shows Jordan’s attitude towards Harry’s problem?
A. Supportive. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Worried.
