Imagine you’re taking an exam, and then you find it difficult to answer those questions. And time’s running out. Will you take the little chance that you get to cheat? Probably, some of us have once cheated in the test.
Certainly, it’s not correct. It’s important to follow the rules because the world would turn into a total mess without rules. However, with time passing by and the development of society, some rules have become barriers (障碍) to people’s success. A famous person once said, “We have so many rules in life about everything. But it’s impossible to be a creator if you’re too well-behaved (行为得体). You have to think outside the box.” Some rules are created to restrain people, and some become old and boring. So sometimes, it’s okay to break the rules. In 1823, William Webb Ellis took the ball in his arms and ran with it during a school football match. In this way, he started a new sport—rugby
Since you’ve already known why someone wants to break the rules, now you need to learn how to do it.
Learn the rules first. Qi Baishi was a talented Chinese artist, but he spent much time learning traditional drawing and painting skills before he found his own styles. Master it before you break it—that’s what you can learn from great minds.
Evaluate (评估) if the result is worth it. Each person has his own values (价值观). Before breaking the rules, think over whether it will go against your values. And the moment you decide to do that, you must be ready to have a wise thought to face the bad results.
11. How does the writer organise the passage?
A. By asking questions. B. By introducing some facts.
C. By telling stories. D. By giving some examples.
12. What does the author think about rules?
A. Rules are created to support people. B. All the rules go against our values.
C. Rules don’t become old and boring. D. Some rules can stop people’s success.
13. What does the underlined word “restrain” mean?
A. Save. B. Control. C. Care. D. Trust.
14. What can we know from the example of Qi Baishi according to the passage?
A. We should master the rules before we break them.
B. It’s important to follow the rules.
C. We have to think outside the box.
D. No one wants to break the rules.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to break the rules. B. Some ways to follow the rules.
C. Think twice before breaking the rules. D. Rules are important.
D 12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C
根据第二段“However, with time passing by and the development of society, some rules have become barriers to people’s success.”
根据第二段“Some rules are created to restrain people, and some become old and boring. So sometimes, it’s okay to break the rules.”
根据第四段“Qi Baishi was a talented Chinese artist…Master it before you break it—that’s what you can learn from great minds.”
D
From May to November, six beach houses have fallen down in North Carolina’s Outer Banks—a troubling sign of how erosion (侵蚀) continues to put a toll on the state’s coastal villages.
The most recent collapse (倒塌) happened between last Thursday and Friday after a storm caused powerful waves along Rodanthe. The house was empty, and officials have been in contact with the house owner. Less than a mile away, three other homes had fallen down in September. Since 2020, a total of 11 houses in the area have been washed away into the ocean.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore said strong winds, large waves, as well as rising sea levels—which are caused by climate change—are causing beaches on the Outer Banks to wash away. “Many buildings close to the beach in Rodanthe are either partially or fully covered with ocean water on a regular basis,” the Seashore said.
It’s a problem faced by coastal communities around the country. In North Carolina, over 750 homes along the state’s beaches are considered in danger from erosion, according to an August report released by the state’s Department of Environmental Quality and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Erosion in these coastal villages affects tourism and destroys sea turtles’ home, and when homes fall down, it leaves ruins (废墟). The situation is expected to worsen as a result of rising sea levels and more coastal storms.
National Seashore officials have warned owners of unsafe houses to either strengthen their home’s supports or move to a safer location if possible.
16. What does the underlined phrase “put a toll on” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Cause damage to. B. Give way to.
C. Bring more people to. D. Make more contributions to.
17. What can we know about the most recent collapse?
A. Six houses were washed away. B. It happened because of a storm hit.
C. It resulted in many people missing. D. Police failed to contact the house owner.
18. What might put the beach houses in danger?
A. The daily effects of winds and waves. B. The loss of wildlife’s home.
C. The ruins of houses left on beaches. D. The weak structure of the houses.
19. What should be done according to the local officials?
A. Take measures to control rising sea levels.
B. Solve the problem by protecting the ecosystem.
C. Reduce the effect on tourism by clearing the ruins.
D. Strengthen the house structure or move to new places.
20. What is the best title for the text?
A. New Houses were Built for Safety B. Tourism Worsens in North Carolina
C. Rising Seas Put Coastal Towns at Risk D. Climate Change Leads to Stronger Storms
16. A 17. B 18. A 19. D 20. C

根据“a troubling sign of how erosion (侵蚀) continues to put a toll on the state’s coastal villages”可知,侵蚀对沿海村庄造成了负面影响,结合下文提到的房屋倒塌、海滩消失等具体现象,可推知put a toll on应理解为“造成损害”。故选A。
根据“The most recent collapse (倒塌) happened between last Thursday and Friday after a storm caused powerful waves along Rodanthe.”
根据“strong winds, large waves, as well as rising sea levels—which are caused by climate change—are causing beaches on the Outer Banks to wash away”可知,强风、巨浪以及气候变化导致的海平面上升,正使外滩群岛的海滩逐渐被冲蚀。故选A。
根据“National Seashore officials have warned owners of unsafe houses to either strengthen their home’s supports or move to a safer location if possible.”
Social Media: A Friend or a Trap for Teens (青少年)?
Nearly every middle school student has used social media—apps like TikTok or RedNote are part of daily life. But when does using it often turn into dependence? ___21___
Studies show that 95% of teens aged 13-17 use social media, and one third check it “almost all the time”. For many, looking through posts becomes a habit while waiting for class, during lunch breaks, even before bed. This can bring problems. Spending over 3 hours a day on social media makes teens feel more worried or sadder.___22___
Worse, some face bad words online—hurtful posts that make them feel bad about themselves.___23___ They start to compare (比较), forgetting that those posts often hide the messy parts of real life.
___24___ It helps teens stay in touch with friends and learn new things. The key is balance. Setting rules, like no phones during meals or limiting use to 1 hour a day, works. Taking breaks to read, playing sports, or talking to family members also helps break the habit.
Social media can be a great tool.___25___ Don’t let it take over their lives.
A. However, social media isn’t all bad.
B. Some feel down when seeing others’ “perfect” lives on their phones.
C. This question worries both parents and teachers.
D. Most young people are interested in social media.
E. It also hurts sleep and makes it hard to focus on homework.
F. But middle school students need to use it wisely.
C 22. E 23. B 24. A 25. F

E“It also hurts sleep and makes it hard to focus on homework.(它还会影响睡眠并使他们难以专注于作业)中的“It also”表示递进,继续列举负面影响,且与前文提到的“before bed(睡前)”相呼应。
空后一句提到“They start to compare…forgetting that those posts often hide the messy parts of real life.(他们开始比较……忘记那些帖子往往隐藏了现实生活中混乱的部分)”。选项B“Some feel down when seeing others’ ‘perfect’ lives on their phones.(有些人看到手机上别人“完美”的生活时会感到沮丧)”提到了“‘perfect’ lives”,与后文的“hide the messy parts”形成对比,解释了比较的原因,逻辑通顺。
空后一句说“It helps teens stay in touch with friends and learn new things.(它帮助青少年与朋友保持联系并学习新事物)”。选项A“However, social media isn’t all bad.(然而,社交媒体并不全是坏的)”作为段首句,起到了承上启下的转折作用,引出下文的正面功能。
空前一句说“Social media can be a great tool.(社交媒体可以是一个很好的工具)”。空后一句说“Don’t let it take over their lives.(别让它主宰他们的生活)”。选项F“But middle school students need to use it wisely.(但中学生需要明智地使用它)”既肯定了工具的价值,又提出了建议,与后文的警告衔接紧密。

One of my least favorite chores is cleaning my bedroom, but I have to do it. If my bedroom is untidy, I find it hard to relax and impossible to do any work! My mom always says “a tidy home means a tidy mind”, and I think this is true. If everything is a mess, you just can’t think clearly.
Studies show that people are usually more successful if they work, study, or live in a clean and tidy environment. A study shows that many children with bad behavior (行为) come from messy houses. Children who grow up in dirty houses would probably be unhealthy and they fall sick more often too. This is why people with tidier homes are often healthier and more successful. My mom is a good example of this. She makes sure our home is always very clean and comfortable, so my sister and I hardly ever fall sick. Everyone loves her and she is very successful at her job in a bank.
I am not a naturally tidy person. I sometimes throw my clothes on the floor because I am too tired to put them away, and I often leave rubbish on my desk. It is not easy to keep things clean all the time, but I am trying to develop the habit of tidying up every day. Maybe one day I will be as tidy and successful as my mom! That’s my wish too.

C. Think twice before breaking the rules. D. Rules are important.
