For years, Jennifer Uchendu had been warning fellow Nigerians about the upcoming dangers of climate change without realizing that a related issue had escaped her attention: she felt increasingly anxious and overwhelmed.
Residents of the global South experience some of the most dramatic effects of climate change, often without contributing significantly to the problem themselves. For Uchendu, who acts as a sustainability consultant in local communities and has launched a blog to help young people reduce their carbon footprint and encourage more accountability among others, it felt like she couldn’t make a difference fast enough.
Then, in 2020, Uchendu saw that UK activists had established climate cafés, where they processed their anger and grief over the warming planet and renewed their resolve. So, she founded the Eco-Anxiety in Africa Project, or TEAP, to help young Africans meet and talk about the emotions they are feeling around climate change.
TEAP’s leaders want to inspire a sense of empowerment among the more than 700 people who have joined the project. Whether the goal is to plant more trees or lower an electricity bill, conversations at TEAP often explore real hardships. “In Nigeria, even though we’ve come together because of climate change, it’s not out of place when someone talks about unemployment or the high prices of food, because we see that these are the broader impacts of the problem,” Uchendu says. “Having something personally related means we can feel comfortable expressing ourselves.”
She has expanded TEAP to several more states in Nigeria and plans to train organizers to create similar spaces in South Africa. Meanwhile, she’s conducting research with the University of Nottingham about the emotional impact of climate change on urban residents in large African cities.
As Uchendu sees it, providing a venue for young Africans to talk about their eco-anxiety is an essential step in continuing the fight for a better future. “If young people feel completely powerless, it’s not just a public health crisis but a disaster for climate change,” she says. “You have to have the energy to do something.” That’s another valuable resource to protect.
4. What was an inner drive for Uchendu to start TEAP?
A. Inspiration from British activists.
B. Emotional burden from climate issues.
C. Frustration with people’s lack of responsibility.
D. Self-expectation as a sustainability consultant.
5. What can we know about TEAP?
A. It has been expanded worldwide.
B. It provides solutions for environmental issues.
C. It creates climate conversation spaces.
D. It fosters a sense of empowerment globally.
6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Eco-anxiety led to climate crises.
B. Health crises equal climate disasters.
C. Young people’s will needs protection.
D. More talking spaces should be created.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Talking It Out: Addressing Eco-Anxiety in Africa
B. A Global Crisis: Climate Change and Mental Health
C. The Role of TEAP: Fighting African Climate Change
D. Jennifer Uchendu: A Responsible African Environmentalist

If you’ve ever wished for a magic wand (魔杖) that could change your life — or someone else’s — in a different direction, Gregory Walton has good news for you. In his new book, Ordinary Magic: The Science of How We Can Achieve Big Change with Small Acts, Walton, a professor of psychology at Stanford, lays out the simple, often small worries that influence what we believe, how we react, and what comes next. Then, he shows us ways to deal with them
Throughout life, Walton writes, and particularly during transitions (starting college, taking a new job, ending a relationship), we ask ourselves core questions: Who am I? Do I belong? Can I do this? Answers that play into our worries can cause us to become negative.
Maybe you’ve started a new job that people “like you” aren’t often hired for. Based on your past experiences and the stereotypes (刻板印象) you know exist, you would likely be wrestling with a worry: Can I do this job? When your first project draws criticism from a colleague, you might be primed to take that small interaction as evidence that the stereotypes are right. “When we’re working toward goals big or small,” Walton writes, “it’s inevitable that we’ll encounter roadblocks along the way. To keep going, we can’t treat those roadblocks as proof we don’t have what it takes.
When the facts we find help us set aside such worries, however, we can spiral up and chart new paths for ourselves or others. In a study, Walton found that a one-hour session for new college students that normalized worries of belonging — and showed that those worries disappeared over time — improved participants’ lives (more interaction with professors, higher graduation rates, greater career satisfaction) a full 10 years later.
The events that cause those upward spirals are ordinary magic, Walton says. They are everyday experiences that help us to set aside our worries so that we can steer our lives in the direction we desire. And we can learn to employ that magic. Ordinary Magic provides non-fantastical inspiration to improve ourselves and our communities. No magic wand required.
8. What is the main purpose of the book Ordinary Magic?
A. To introduce instant magical solutions.
B. To offer methods to handle worries.
C. To promote the use of magic in daily life.
D. To explain life transition challenges.
9. What caused a new employee to take criticism as proof of stereotypes?
A. Self-doubt. B. Constant failures. C. Big goals. D. Unfair judgement.
10. What do the underlined words “spiral up” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Gain more skills. B. Make constant progress.
C. Keep current status. D. Become more focused.
11. What does “ordinary magic” refer to in the text?
A. Small daily positive actions.
B. Instant life-changing tools.
C. Major events causing big changes.
D. Scientific studies on psychology.

The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias where people overestimate their own intelligence and capabilities. Low-ability individuals lack the skills to recognize their incompetence, combining poor self-awareness and limited cognition to boost their self-judgment. As Charles Darwin noted, “Ignorance more frequently begets (导致) confidence than does knowledge.”
In daily life, this effect often plays out — for example, a family member might rant (夸夸其谈) about a topic, dismissing others’ views while being unaware of their own ignorance. Social psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger first named the phenomenon. In their studies, people scoring in the lowest ranks on tests (e.g., grammar, humor) overestimated their performance, placing themselves in the 12th rank when they were actually in the 62nd.
This effect also impacts what people believe or the decisions they make. In one study, Dunning found that women performed equally to men on a science quiz — yet women underestimated their performance because they believed they had less scientific reasoning ability than men. The researchers also found that these women were more likely to refuse to enter a science competition due to this belief.
So what explains this psychological effect? Are some people simply too dull to recognize their shortcomings? Dunning attributes this to a “dual burden”: deficits in skill and expertise cause people to perform poorly in the domain in which they are incompetent. Secondly, their deficient knowledge makes them unable to recognize their mistakes. Notably, the effect is not tied to low IQ — everyone is prone to it, even experts who may underestimate their abilities.
To overcome the Dunning-Kruger effect, one can start by keeping learning; instead of assuming mastery of a subject, digging deeper into it often reveals unrecognized knowledge gaps, which helps temper (使缓和) overconfidence. Seeking constructive feedback from others is another useful step — while such input can be hard to hear, it offers valuable outside perspectives on one’s actual abilities. Finally, it helps to challenge one’s own beliefs; avoiding the trap of confirmation bias by actively seeking information that questions existing ideas can lead to a more realistic self-assessment.
12. Which of the following best reflects the Dunning-Kruger effect?
A. A poor singer rates himself highly. B. A skilled expert doubts her abilities.
C. A student honestly assesses her work. D. A worker seeks feedback to improve.
13. Why does the author mention the study in paragraph 3?
A. To highlight a difference. B. To prove a statement.
C. To introduce a trend. D. To offer a background.
14. What causes the Dunning-Kruger effect?
A. Low IQ and poor memory. B. Dull and slow brain response.
C. Modest educational background. D. Lack of skill and self-awareness.
15. What is the common goal of the practices recommended in the last paragraph?
A. To win broader recognition from others.
B. To cultivate a habit of accepting criticism.
C. To speed up the learning of professional skills.
D. To have a more accurate evaluation of oneself.

You may have heard of journaling as a tool for personal growth or mental health. In fact, studies have shown that journaling helps reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). ____16____
Organizing your thoughts
Our minds can be chaotic. Writing our thoughts down can help us gain some space from them. ____17____ When our thoughts are on paper, we can notice what is actually going on in our mind and use this information to make concrete goals. When we get clear on our needs, we can get clear on how to meet them, and thus live a happy, fulfilled life.
Zooming out to get perspective
Using journaling to record your day-to-day life can help you notice and break out of patterns that might be keeping you stuck. We all become involved in cycles of behavior that may not serve us in the long run. Keeping track of our lives can help us become more aware of what holds us back. ____18____It allows us to notice what stays the same and what changes over time. With this awareness, we can use this information to make changes in our lives and relationships.
____19____
When we can get our stories onto a page, we materialize them into something meaningful and manageable. We can read our own narrative and ask ourselves, “How would I respond to a friend who had been through this experience?” Often, we are critical of ourselves. However, we are kind and compassionate toward others who have been through hard things. Journaling can help us extend that compassion toward ourselves.
Practicing gratitude
Gratitude journaling has been shown to improve mental health, interpersonal relationship quality, and even physical health and health behaviors. ____20____ It may be anything that makes you think, “I am lucky to have... in my life.” Realizing the abundance of good things we often miss can make us much happier. Meanwhile, those tough things seem insignificant and fade away.

B. Developing empathy for others
C. Looking back at old writings also helps
D. This can greatly reduce their emotional charge

For Latvian poet Ieva Lapina, ancient Chinese poetry is more than art — it is a bridge connecting two distant cultures through ____36____ (share) emotions and timeless beauty.
Her book, River Snow: Anthology of Ancient Chinese Lyrics, ____37____ (publish) in 2024 and quickly secured several major honors. It features works by literary giants including Tao Yuanming, Xie Lingyun, Li Bai, and Xin Qiji, spanning from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317 — 420) ____38____ the Song Dynasty (960-1279).
“Translating from ancient Chinese into modern Latvian was a great challenge, because Latvian literature is____39____ (relative) young, while Chinese poetry has millennia of development, with rich forms and many ____40____ (remark) poets,” Lapina says. To connect two distant cultures, she carefully reproduces the imagery and rhythm of the ____41____ (original) while blending them with the musicality of Latvian verse, creating a poetic dialogue that bridges cultures. She even adds annotations (注释) ____42____ (explain) historical events and poet biographies.
For Lapina, translation is not merely about words but about transmitting meaning and emotion across languages. In this endeavor, she strives to convey the essence of the original text, whether it is a poem ____43____ a scholar’s reflections. Thus, when the translation reaches the reader, it takes on a new life, ____44____ (present) China as filtered through her interpretive lens.
Lapina hopes her work will deepen the local understanding of Chinese literature, just as she said — Poetry is like a snowflake that crosses mountains and rivers and falls into____45____ heart of a distant land.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a cold night in Minnesota, and Arnold was returning home after his long shift as a ride-hailing driver. Headlights cut through the darkness, lighting up his driveway — and a tiny figure on the grass beside the front porch (门厅). He turned off the engine and stepped out to check on it.
It was a cute little dog, shaking in the cold. As Arnold approached, the dog wagged its tail and drew near, pressing its cold body against his leg to seek warmth. He petted the dog for a while until his wife, Miriam, came out and called, “Honey, dinner’s ready.”
Arnold told Miriam there was a dog outside, freezing, and asked if he could bring it inside. Miriam hesitated — she was terribly allergic (过敏的) to dogs — but her eyes softened at the poor creature’s difficult situation. She then suggested taking some allergy medicine, as she couldn’t bear to leave it out there. Arnold knew full well that Miriam’s allergies would be a disaster for several days if he brought the dog inside. Suddenly, a good idea dawned on him. “Wait here, little buddy,” he said.
He rushed inside and soon came back with an old box and a blanket. Surprisingly, the dog stayed right where he told it to, as if well-trained — making Arnold wonder why its owner hadn’t put a leash (牵引绳) on it. He lined the box with the blanket, placed it on the porch, and whispered, “Come here, buddy.” The dog obeyed and climbed into the box immediately. Arnold did his best to wrap it up in the blanket.
Miriam brought a plate of food and a bowl of water, placing them beside the box. “Tomorrow, we’ll take it to the vet (兽医),” Miriam suggested. Arnold nodded, gazing at the dog under the blanket. “Goodnight, little one. We’ll find your home tomorrow,” he whispered softly, before following Miriam inside. His mind was still on the small creature braving the cold outside alone.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The following day, Arnold woke up to check on the dog and discovered it had left, along with the blanket.

【答案】4. B 5. C 6. C 7. A

D

推理判断题。根据第一段第一句“The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias where people overestimate their own intelligence and capabilities. (达克效应是一种人们高估自己智力和能力的认知偏差。)”可知,达克效应的核心是能力低的人高估自己。A选项“A poor singer rates himself highly. (一个糟糕的歌手给自己打高分。)”符合“能力低却高估自己”的特征。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“This effect also impacts what people believe or the decisions they make. In one study, Dunning found that women performed equally to men on a science quiz — yet women underestimated their performance because they believed they had less scientific reasoning ability than men. The researchers also found that these women were more likely to refuse to enter a science competition due to this belief.(这种效应也会影响人们的信念和决策。在一项研究中,邓宁发现女性在科学测验中的表现与男性不相上下,但女性却低估了自己的成绩,因为她们认为自己的科学推理能力不如男性。研究人员还发现,正是由于这种信念,这些女性更有可能拒绝参加科学竞赛)可知,作者提到第三段的研究,是为了进一步证明达克效应会使人高估自己的能力,即为了证明文章的观点。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段第三、四句“Dunning attributes this to a “dual burden”: deficits in skill and expertise cause people to perform poorly in the domain in which they are incompetent. Secondly, their deficient knowledge makes them unable to recognize their mistakes. (邓宁将此现象归结为一种“双重负担”:其一,专业技能与知识储备不足,致使人们在自身不擅长的领域表现糟糕;其二,认知匮乏又让他们无法察觉自身存在的失误。)”可知,达克效应是由于技能不足和自我意识差共同导致的。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段内容“To overcome the Dunning-Kruger effect, one can start by keeping learning; instead of assuming mastery of a subject, digging deeper into it often reveals unrecognized knowledge gaps, which helps temper (使缓和) overconfidence.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】
The following day, Arnold woke up to check on the dog and discovered it had left, along with the blanket. He froze for a second, his heart sinking with a mix of worry and confusion, before quickly grabbing his phone to check the security video by the porch. On the screen, it clearly showed a blurry figure bending down to scoop up the dog gently. As the figure leaned in to press a soft kiss on the dog’s forehead, Arnold could tell from the tender gesture that this must be the missing owner, his tense shoulders relaxing. He hurried to find Miriam in the kitchen, a warm smile spreading across his face as he excitedly told her that the pup had been reunited with its owner. Miriam let out a soft sigh of relief, glad their kind gesture had led to a happy ending.
Suddenly, they heard barks coming from their front porch. Arnold opened the door, only to discover the dog carrying the blanket between its teeth. To Arnold’s utter shock, the dog dropped the blanket at his feet and barked again, wagging its tail. Its tongue was hanging out as if it was smiling to thank him. Arnold looked up with his eyes wide in surprise and saw the man who appeared on his security camera. After introducing himself, the man held out the gift box with a gentle gesture to extend thanks to Arnold. Arnold waved it off twice, noting he’d just done what anyone would have done. The man insisted, so he finally took the box. In that moment, Arnold realized a simple act of kindness connected strangers through a furry companion.
