How can we connect these ideas? What words can we use?
Sentence A:
I buy a T-shirt. I am happy. Sentence B:
I buy a T-shirt. I have no money left.
“These sentences are short. But to give good advice, we need to show the logic. Today we learn two tools: linking words and modal verbs.”
Review
What Is an Adverbial Clause?
I get pocket money. I should save some. When I get pocket money, I should save some.
时间 when 当……时 When you get pocket money, you should save some.
Don’t spend all your money until you think twice.
条件 unless 除非 (= if…not) You will never have enough money unless you plan carefully.
Although the T‑shirt looks cool, it is uncomfortable.
目的 so that 以便,为了 Save money now so that you can buy a gift for your mother.
结果 so…that 如此… The pen was so cheap that she bought ten of them.
重点讲解:unless = if…not
规则:unless 的意思等同于 if...not。
原句 用 if…not 改写
You will never have enough money unless you plan carefully.
You will never have enough money if you do not plan carefully.
1.You will miss the bus ______ you hurry.
2.______ you finish your homework, you can't watch TV.
重点讲解:so that vs. so…that
例句:
I study hard so that I can pass the exam.
The movie was so boring that I fell asleep.
so that (purpose 目的) so…that (result 结果)
Save money now so that you can buy a gift. The pen was so cheap that she bought ten.
后面常跟 can/could/will 结构:so + 形容词/副词 + that + 从句
When you will get pocket money, you should save some. When you get pocket money, you should save some.
You will waste money unless you will plan. You will waste money unless you plan.

4. Lucy loves to buy different types of pens at the stationery store. Now she has more than 200 pens at hand and can't stop collecting new ones. She can't afford this hobby now.
Production
Your friend wants to buy a T - shirt. It’s fashionable but not comfortable. What advice would you give?
B:You shouldn’t buy the T - shirt just because it’s stylish. Comfort is more important for clothes you’ll wear often. You could look for another T - shirt that’s both trendy and cozy. If you can’t find one right away, maybe wait a little and keep searching for a more comfortable option you also like.
Production
Linda wants to use up her pocket money to buy a birthday gift for her mother. Any ideas?
B:If you want to use all your pocket money, Linda, you could make a handmade gift like a photo album with pictures of you and your mom. It’s full of love and might not cost much. Or you should pick a practical gift your mom needs, such as a warm scarf or a set of nice tea cups, as long as it’s within your budget.
Production
Ben often buys things he doesn’t need and shops online without planning. How can he stop this habit?
B:Ben, you shouldn’t shop online without thinking first. Before you open shopping apps, you should write down a list of things you really need. If you see something tempting but unnecessary, you could wait 1 - 2 days. By then, you might lose the urge to buy it. Also, set a weekly spending limit for online shopping to keep your budget in check.
Production
Lucy loves buying pens and now has over 200 she can’t afford. What should she do?
B:Lucy, you shouldn’t keep buying pens when they’re too expensive for you. You could donate some of your pens to kids in need at a local school. If you still enjoy pens, you should set a small monthly budget for stationery and follow it strictly. You might also try other hobbies like painting or writing diaries—these can use the pens you already have without spending more money.
