It all started with a short video. I watched a boy finish a long-distance run on TV before his family went for a relaxing picnic in the countryside. The lively scene touched me deeply, and a special idea came into my mind at once. I, an eight-year-old boy, also hoped to join a wonderful outdoor picnic. Unlike most kids who chose to ride or walk casually, I made up my mind to get there by running all the way.
I was born with weak legs, so long-distance running had always been tough for me. Running to the distant picnic site was absolutely a huge challenge. Even so, my dad made a deal with me, and we started strict training right away. Over the following three years, I stuck to daily practice. I learned to run steadily, adjust my speed properly and build up physical strength. My family and teachers never left me alone, offering sincere care and constant encouragement all the time.
Sometimes my legs ached terribly and felt tired after hours of practice, yet I held on firmly. At last, the long-expected day arrived. I stood at the starting point, with my family and friends gathering around to cheer for me. My dad gently asked if I needed a hand, but I replied with a firm “No”. I stood steady, began to run slowly, and then gradually sped up with everyone’s warm support.
Suddenly, I tripped over a small stone and lost my pace. I stayed calm, because we had practiced to deal with such situations. I got to my feet quickly, took a deep breath and kept moving forward. Before long, I arrived at the destination. My mom waited there, wearing a bright smile and holding her arms wide to give me a big hug.
This experience taught me a valuable lesson. Life is full of unexpected troubles. When difficulties stand in your way, never choose to quit. Pull yourself together and keep moving toward your goal. Your hard work will surely pay off, and there will always be warm-hearted people cheering for you along the journey.
4. What was the author’s unusual decision?
A. To go for a picnic by bike. B. To run to the picnic site.
C. To watch a running video. D. To train with his family.
5. What can we know about the author’s training process?
A. It was strict and long-lasting. B. It was short but interesting.
C. It concerned his friends. D. It included no physical practice.
6. Which word can best describe the author?
A. Selfless. B. Gentle. C. Clever. D. Determined.
7. What does the story mainly tell us?
A. Family support leads to success. B. Confidence is the most important.
C. Never give up in the face of hardship. D. Don’t stay indifferent to our families.

An environmental group, NatureServe, says 40 percent of animals and 34 percent of plants in the United States are at risk of disappearing. The group recently released a report based on 50 years of data from over 1,000 scientists across the country. It also found that 41 percent of ecosystems, including life forms, land and water, are facing collapse.
Many kinds of creatures are in danger, including crayfish, cacti, and freshwater mussels. For example, the Venus flytrap, a plant that “eats” insects, is now only found in the wild in a few places in North and South Carolina. About half of all U. S. cactus species and 200 kinds of trees may die out. Large northern grasslands are also among the most threatened ecosystems. The report provides pictures and maps showing where animals and plants are most at risk.
The main threats include environmental destruction, land-use change, invasive species, river pollution, and climate change. California, Texas, and the southeastern U. S. have the highest percentages of species at risk. Scientists say this is partly because these areas have many different forms of life and also have seen a lot of population growth in recent years.
Sean O’Brien is the president of NatureServe. He said the data in the report was very worrying. He hopes the report will help lawmakers pass wildlife protection laws. John Kanter is a biologist with the National Wildlife Federation, a non-profit group also based in Virginia. He noted that the report could steer state officials in creating effective action plans. Currently, federal money for wildlife protection is limited, but a proposed bill would greatly increase it.
Kanter added, “Our biodiversity is like a nature savings account. If we don’t keep track of what’s out there and what the threats are, there’s no way to take action first.” He believes that with better information, people can protect nature and build a healthier future for all living things. The report gives hope that by working together, humans can save endangered species and keep the planet beautiful for generations to come.
8. How did the group get the findings?
A. By studying the past data. B. By taking pictures and maps.
C. By interviewing local officials. D. By watching animals in nature.
9. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To show different views. B. To provide more information.
C. To offer a new argument. D. To explain some reasons.
10. What does the underlined word “steer” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Guide. B. Follow. C. Train. D. Regulate.
11. What does Kanter stress about the report in the last paragraph?
A. Its process. B. Its challenges. C. Its significance. D. Its applications.

Archaeologists and researchers at the ancient Roman site of Pompeii have used artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time to digitally rebuild the face of a man killed in the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius that covered the city, offering a new way to understand one of history’s most famous natural disasters.
The digital picture shows a man whose remains, along with those of another person, were discovered, was trying to get away from the city toward the coast of what is now Italy during the volcanic eruption. Researchers believe the man died early in the disaster, during a heavy fall of volcanic material.
The rebuilding was done by the Pompeii Archaeological Park, which announced on its website that it was done with the University of Padua and based on archaeological survey data from digs near the Porta Stabia burial ground, just outside the walls of the ancient city.
The announcement shows the AI-generated image of what the man could have looked like. He is shown running along a rough, debris-covered road, holding a large, shallow bowl over his head and using it as a shield while Mount Vesuvius is seen erupting in the background. The man was also carrying an oil lamp, a small iron ring and 10 bronze coins, personal objects that offer insight into his last moments as well as into daily life in Pompeii before the disaster.
Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage site near Naples, was buried under ash and pumice when Vesuvius erupted nearly 2,000 years ago, keeping the city and the remains of thousands of its people in very fine detail.
Old accounts, including those of Roman writer Pliny the Younger, describe Pompeii’s residents using objects to protect themselves as ash and debris covered the city. The digital picture was created by using AI and photo-editing techniques designed to turn skeletal and archaeological data into a realistic human likeness.
12. In what aspect can the picture offer help?
A. Finding more ancient remains near Pompeii.
B. Rebuilding the old walls and ground of Pompeii.
C. Showing the daily diet of the people in Pompeii.
D. Studying the volcanic eruption destroying Pompeii.
13. What was the man in the picture doing?
A. Cooking his food. B. Observing the volcano.
C. Escaping from Pompeii. D. Collecting volcanic material.
14. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The details of the image. B. The daily life of the man.
C. The cause of the eruption. D. The features of Pompeii.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Volcano Ruined the Ancient City Pompeii
B. AI Recreated the Face of a Man in Pompeii
C. Photos Record a Famous Volcanic Eruption
D. AI Helps Scientists Study Ancient Disasters

●Talk about money openly
Pocket money day can be a good chance to discuss spending habits. ____18____. Meanwhile, admit when you make money mistakes. Share stories about your own financial wins. Kids appreciate honesty, and it keeps the conversation real.

Sarah and her young son Max had just spent a week visiting her husband at his new job site across the country. It was a trip meant to give the little boy some precious face-to-face time with his father, who had only been seen on video calls lately. The visit had been wonderful, filled with park trips and bedtime stories that only happen when a family is together. But now it was over, and she was flying home alone with the five-year-old who didn’t understand why Daddy could not come too.
The morning had started early, with a tearful goodbye at the hotel and a rushed taxi ride to the airport. Security lines had been long; the boarding gate had changed twice. Their first flight had been delayed for over an hour. The mother had used every snack and every song on her phone to stop her son getting bored. By the time they reached Atlanta for their connecting flight, she had nothing left in her bag of tricks and hardly anything left in herself. Her back ached from carrying their luggage (行李) and her heart was heavy from the goodbye she had just gone through.
Later, they found a restaurant near the entrance, and she hoped that a familiar meal might buy them an hour of peace before boarding the final journey home. But the restaurant was loud and crowded, and her son had reached his limit. He moved around in his seat, knocked over his water, and started making noises. The mother tried everything to calm him down — a gentle hand on his shoulder, a whispered promise of ice cream — but nothing worked. She could feel the eyes of other diners beginning to turn their way, and she felt the familiar heat of embarrassment rising in her cheeks, mixed with the guilt that she could not fix this for him. That’s when a waitress named Brittany Bell walked over.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

A 9. B 10. A 11. C

How to Use Pocket Money to Teach Children Money Smarts
Many parents hope their children can learn how to use money wisely. One simple way is through pocket money. With proper guidance, pocket money can help children develop responsibility and make better choices about money.
●Set clear rules from the beginning
Before giving pocket money, parents should decide how often it will be given and what it is for. Some families connect pocket money with extra chores, while others see it as part of family life. ____16____. Spell it out: when, how much, any conditions, and what happens if they “forget” to do their part.

The amount of pocket money should depend on a child’s age and family situation. Children need enough money to make meaningful decisions, but not so much that they stop learning how to plan carefully. The goal is to make them have enough to make meaningful choices.
●Talk about money openly
Pocket money day can be a good chance to discuss spending habits. ____18____. Meanwhile, admit when you make money mistakes. Share stories about your own financial wins. Kids appreciate honesty, and it keeps the conversation real.
●Let children learn from mistakes
Sometimes children spend all their money on something that quickly loses its value. Although parents may want to help, it is often better to let children experience the result of their choices. ____19____.
In short, pocket money is not just about giving money. It is a useful way to help children build money skills and prepare for future life. ____20____. However, the habits they develop today can help them become responsible and confident adults in the future.

a plan后接不定式作后置定语,说明规划的具体内容,a plan to do sth.
be known for是固定搭配,意为“因……

She approached Sarah with a warm smile and softly asked if she could try. Instead of scolding the upset child, Brittany pulled out a colorful crayon and a blank napkin from her pocket. She sat down across from Max, leaned in gently, and asked him to tell her all about the fun week he’d just had with his daddy. Max immediately stopped making noises, his little eyes lighting up as he started chattering about the trips and the dinosaur toy his dad bought. Brittany listened carefully, nodding and asking questions now and then, while drawing a little dinosaur on the napkin for him.
Seeing her son calm down, Sarah was deeply moved. She thanked Brittany repeatedly, saying she’d had an exhausting day and had nowhere else to turn. She tried to offer an extra tip, but Brittany refused. Brittany told Sarah she’d been through the same thing as a young single mom, and that a little kindness can make a big difference. When Sarah paid for the meal, she found Brittany had secretly added a free ice cream for Max. Sarah left the restaurant with a calmed, happy child and a warm heart, carrying the unexpected kindness from a stranger with her all the way home.
