Drones (无人机) are a kind of machine that can fly. They’re becoming more and more popular in many areas. People can use a computer or a remote control (遥控器) to control this flying machine. Drones can do many things for us, like carrying things, taking pictures, and following animals that are in danger. Some people say this special machine will change our life as much as the computer does.
In Brazil, farmers use drones to watch their crops (庄稼). There are quite a few large farms in Brazil. On these farms, people find it difficult to look after all the crops. Drones can help farmers to find out if the crops are sick. They also make farmers use fewer farm chemicals (农药). This can help the environment, improve our health and save much money.
Drones can also help to find lost people. If people are far from home and get lost, the police can use drones to find them. A 92-year-old man in Virginia was lost and had to spend a night in the forest. Luckily, the drone found him in 20 minutes and the police finally saved him.

Grandma often said, “Put on your coat! The ‘Counting the Nines’ has started on Winter Solstice (冬至)”. In Chinese, there’s even a common phrase called “Shu Jiu HanTian” — it means the coldest days of the year. But what is “Counting the Nines”?
In China, winter can be long and really cold. But long ago, Chinese people found a smart and fun way to get through the time. This tradition is called “Shu Jiu” (or “Counting the Nines”). It’s a good way that helps people follow the weather and hope for spring.
“Shu Jiu” usually starts on Winter Solstice. The way to do it is easy: people count 9 groups of 9 days — that’s 81 days total. When these 81 days end, the cold winter is gone, and spring is fully here.
There’s a famous folk song called the “Song of Nines”. It talks about how the weather changes. For example, it says that during the “Third Nine” and “Fourth Nine”, it’s the coldest time — people can walk on ice! But by the “Ninth Nine”, cows start walking in the fields. That means it’s time to start farming.
In Chinese culture, “Shu Jiu” isn’t just a calendar. It stands for hope and patience. It shows how smart ancient Chinese farmers were, and how close they felt to nature. Next time grandma tells you to put on more clothes, don’t get a cold!
26. Why does the writer mention grandma’s words in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce his grandma. B. To introduce the winter clothes.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To introduce the nine numbers.
27. When does “Counting the Nines” usually start?
A. On the first day of winter. B. On Winter Solstice.
C. On the first day of spring D. On the coldest day of the year.
28. Which picture can show the temperature changes during “Counting the Nines”?
A. B.
C. D.
29. What does the last sentence remind us to do?
A. Listen to grandma and wear more clothes. B. Walk on ice in winter.
C. Start farming in spring. D. Sing the “Song of Nines”.
30. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The Coldest Days in Winter B. The Tradition of “Counting the Nines” in China
C. A Famous Folk Song About Weather D. The Relationship Between Winter Solstice and Farming

First, plants are essential for people. They meet our basic needs, such as food, medicine, and materials. Without plants, our lives would be much harder. Second, plants are important for animals. Many animals live in forests and depend on plants for food and shelter. For instance, monkeys eat fruits from trees, and birds build their nests in branches. Plants are the foundation of the food chain, supporting all kinds of wildlife. Third, plants play a key role in protecting the environment. They help clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. They also cover the soil and stop strong winds.
In a word, plants are so important for us. We should protect them.
