This place opened in 1972 as a club for working men at the beginning. It reopened in 2015 with shiny gold decoration. It mixes older regular customers with fashionable young people from east London. It has live music, comedy, and film nights.
Capacity:300. Station: Hackney Central.
5. ICA
The ICA is near a famous road, offering unusual music shows from the newest artists like Arca. The venue is a simple dark room with a great sound system. If you come early, you can get a cocktail at the artistic white-painted bar.

One spring afternoon on a bridge in Maryland, 51-year-old Jonathan Bauer and his 13-year-old daughter Ava were driving home. Suddenly, a black pickup slid out of control, hit a hard wall, rolled over an SUV, and came to rest hanging over the guardrail (护栏). Bauer stopped his car in time. A BMW then hit the side of his car.
After making sure Ava was not hurt, Bauer ran to check on the BMW driver. She was shocked but fine. Then came a scream (尖叫) from the pickup. A man climbed out and pointed down. About 30 feet below, a child’s car seat floated in the water. Next to it was a little girl in a pink dress, around two years old, kicking and screaming.
Things became more frightening when the girl rolled over onto her stomach. Bauer waited for the pickup driver to act, but he didn’t move — perhaps in shock. Bauer knew the water was shallow, only about four feet deep — and there might be rocks. But he couldn’t wait.
“Ava!” Bauer yelled, taking off his shoes, “Stay by the car!” He climbed onto the guardrail, and jumped. He hit the sandy bottom, unhurt.
The girl was less than ten feet away. He swam to her and lifted her out. She was not breathing, mouth half open, eyes nearly closed. Standing, he laid her against his shoulder and hit her back with his hand. Water came out of her mouth. Still no breath. He hit her back again. She took a breath, and then her little fingers held tightly to his neck. She was alive.
A family on a boat pulled them aboard and took them to a sloping place where an ambulance (救护车) waited. The girl was taken to a hospital by helicopter, and Bauer hugged his own daughter Ava next to their damaged car on the bridge.
Inspired by her father, Ava became a young firefighter trainee four months later, so that she could also save lives.
4. What happened to the black pickup in the accident?
A. It ended up partly over the bridge’s edge.
B. It hit a hard wall and stopped immediately.
C. It fell off the bridge into the water below.
D. It struck a BMW and slid into Bauer’s car.
5. How did Bauer manage to get the little girl to breathe again?
A. By lifting her out. B. By laying her against his shoulder.
C. By striking her back. D. By breathing into her mouth.
6. What can be inferred about the family on the boat?
A. They worked as professional lifeguards.
B. They helped Bauer reach the shore quickly.
C. They knew the little girl’s parents.
D. They called an ambulance before the rescue.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the story?
A. A Terrible Car Accident B. Ava’s Firefighter Dream
C. A Child Rescue Guide D. A Father’s Brave Rescue
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. D

Many young people today are turning to wearable tools and AI health apps to keep track of their health. This practice, sometimes called “digital wellness”, has grown rapidly. Take 28-year-old designer Li Meng from Shanghai as an example. Each morning, she records her resting heart rate and blood oxygen level using her smart ring. When noticing an unusually high heart rate, she takes a short break and does breathing exercises. “It helps me realize when I’m overworked,” she says.
Besides basic health signs, some young users use health apps for health checks. Chen Hao, a 30-year-old teacher in Beijing, regularly uploads photos of his tongue to a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)-based app. The app analyzes the image and recommends dietary changes. For example, if it suggests “heat”, he drinks chrysanthemum (菊) tea. Chen finds these tips helpful for adjusting his daily habits.
Medical professionals agree that these digital tools can serve as useful early warning signs. Dr. Wang Li from a Beijing hospital explains that many young people ignore small health problems until they become serious. “Checking sleep quality, heart rate, or tongue condition through an app can help catch problems at an early stage,” she says.
Dr. Wang also notes that an app cannot fully replace medical checks. “A single high heart reading might just be caused by stress or a heavy meal,” she notes. Another specialist points out that checking health data too frequently may lead to unnecessary worry and poor sleep. “Thinking too much about every number can actually harm your mental balance,” he says.
Therefore, the best approach is to use digital health tools as early warnings, not doctors. If you experience long-lasting discomfort or see repeated abnormal readings, the advice is simple: visit a hospital for a professional check-up.
8. What does Li Meng use her smart ring to do?
A. Monitor heart rate. B. Record sleep score.
C. Track work hours. D. Do breathing exercises.
9. How does Chen Hao respond to the AI tongue analysis?
A. Quit the app. B. See a doctor.
C. Change his exercise. D. Adjust food intake.
10. What is the main purpose of the fourth paragraph?
A. To point out problems. B. To question the apps.
C. To provide evidence. D. To make a contrast.
11. What should digital health tools be treated as?
A. Personal doctors. B. Daily trackers.
C. Effective treatments. D. Professional suggestions.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. A 11. B
【解析】
【导语】文章介绍当下年轻人借助可穿戴设备、人工智能健康软件监测健康的现象,阐述这类数字化健康工具的积极作用,同时指出其局限性,并给出合理使用的建议。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Each morning, she records her resting heart rate and blood oxygen level using her smart ring.(每天早上,她用智能戒指记录静息心率和血氧水平。)”可知,Li Meng使用智能戒指监测心率。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The app analyzes the image and recommends dietary changes. For example, if it suggests ‘heat’, he drinks chrysanthemum (菊) tea.(这款软件分析图片并建议调整饮食。例如,如果提示‘上火’,他就喝菊花茶。)”可知,Chen Hao根据舌头图片分析调整饮食摄入。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Dr. Wang also notes that an app cannot fully replace medical checks.(王医生也指出,应用程序不能完全替代医疗检查。)”以及“Another specialist points out that checking health data too frequently may lead to unnecessary worry and poor sleep.(另一位专家指出,过于频繁地查看健康数据可能会导致不必要的焦虑和睡眠不佳。)”可知,本段主要介绍健康应用软件存在的两处弊端。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Therefore, the best approach is to use digital health tools as early warnings, not doctors.(因此,最佳方式是把数字健康工具当作早期预警信号,而非医生。)”可知,这类数字健康工具应该被用作日常追踪工具。

Scientists and medical researchers have spent many years studying the human brain. Even after many studies, its workings are still not fully understood. New research, however, is helping us understand how our brains develop.
Scientists at the University of California have discovered a new period of brain development in newborn babies. In the past, people thought that the connections in most babies’ brains were fully developed before they were born. Now scientists find these connections continue to develop for months after birth. So as newborn babies sleep quietly in their beds, their brains are busy making connections.
The scientists studied neurons (神经元) that are believed to form deep in the brain. They found that these neurons can make a very long trip in the brain. They move, from the site where they are born, to the brain’s prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层), an area that influences personality development, reasoning, understanding of the world and much more. At this final resting place, the neurons settle down and become part of a complex (复杂的) connection system, which makes up our brain.
Arturo, a Professor of Neurological Surgery at the university, calls this a “wonder.” “It is just amazing when it happens before a baby is born, and more amazing when it’s happening in a brain that is bigger and much more complex.” He says the progress made by the scientific world is impressive, which may help answer questions about the human thought process. The discovery may also lead to a better understanding of diseases of the human nervous system.
However, he adds, there is still a long way to go. “We have learned a lot about brain development, but it’s still a very small part of what we need to know to really understand how the brain works. So it’s fascinating that we are making progress so fast, but there is still a lot to be done.”
12. What did people use to believe about the connections in babies’ brains?
A. They were unknown before birth. B. They were completed before birth.
C. They started working after birth. D. They kept developing after birth.
13. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The large size of the brain. B. The newly discovered brain area.
C. The long journey of the neurons. D. The important role of neurons
14. What is Arturo’s attitude toward the new discovery?
A. Proud and confident. B. Excited but realistic.
C. Curious but doubtful. D. Impressed and certain.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. High complexity of newborn brains. B. The key role of prefrontal cortex.
C. A newly found stage of brain development. D. Complete mapping of brain growth.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. C
【解析】

【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“They found that these neurons can make a very long trip in the brain. They move, from the site where they are born, to the brain’s prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层), an area that influences personality development, reasoning, understanding of the world and much more. At this final resting place, the neurons settle down and become part of a complex (复杂的) connection system, which makes up our brain.(他们发现,这些神经元会在大脑中完成一段极长的迁移过程。神经元从生成的位置出发,迁移至大脑前额叶皮层——该区域会影响人格发展、逻辑推理、对世界的认知以及诸多其他方面。在这一最终落脚点,神经元稳定下来,成为构成大脑的复杂连接网络的一部分。)”以及第四段“Arturo, a Professor of Neurological Surgery at the university, calls this a “wonder.”(该校神经外科教授阿图罗将这一现象称作一个奇迹。)”可知 ,this指代神经元漫长的迁移过程。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“It is just amazing when it happens before a baby is born, and more amazing when it’s happening in a brain that is bigger and much more complex.(神经元迁移在胎儿阶段发生就已经令人惊叹,而在更大、更复杂的新生儿大脑中持续发生就更为神奇。)”能够看出教授感到兴奋;再根据第五段“We have learned a lot about brain development, but it’s still a very small part of what we need to know to really understand how the brain works.(我们已经掌握很多大脑发育知识,但这距离完全弄懂大脑运作原理所需了解的内容还只是冰山一角。)”可知,教授同时保持客观清醒、认清研究仍有很长路要走,因此他的态度是激动但务实客观。
【15题详解】

Container Gardening: Easy, Fun and Money-Saving
Container gardening is an easy, fun and money-saving way to bring colorful flowers into your home. ____16____ Fortunately, by following a few basic guidelines, you can create a beautiful and healthy container garden.
Know the full size of your flowers. Before planting, find out how large each flower will become when fully grown. This helps you place them correctly in the container. ____17____ If you ignore this, plants may become overcrowded and compete for space.
____18____ All flowers in the same container should have similar requirements for water and sunlight. If one needs full sun while another doesn’t, they will not grow well together. To avoid this, always make sure you know the plants well before buying.
Prepare the container and soil properly. Make several holes in the bottom of the container so that extra water can get out. Never use soil directly from your garden; it is too heavy and may contain insects. Instead, use a soft, bagged potting mix that holds water and food. ____19____
Use the “thriller, filler, spiller” method. To create an attractive arrangement, start with a tall, eye-catching plant in the center — the “thriller”. Then surround it with “filler” plants. ____20____ Finally, add “spiller” plants that grow over the sides. This three-part method makes a balanced and beautiful look.
Following these simple rules will give you a lovely container garden all season long.
A. Choose plants with similar needs.
B. Make sure they do not grow too tall.
C. This helps the young roots grow and spread.
D. Proper spacing is also important for air flow.
E. The bigger the container, the better the flowers grow.
F. The process can also be quite enjoyable and fill you with pride.
G. But without observing certain rules, your flowers may not last long.
【答案】16. G 17. D 18. A 19. C 20. B

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
We lived in the quiet countryside when I was four and a half years old. Back then, life was simple, without the modern equipment we see today. Our house sat on a high bank overlooking a road — not a busy one, as public buses didn’t go that way. To reach the main road, you had to walk for nearly thirty minutes.
Those were dark terrible times for our family. We lived a very poor life and could only make ends meet. My father worked far away and, like many men of that time, could only come home on weekends. In this hopeless situation, my older brother — just two years my senior — started school. The housework fell on my mother, who was also caring for my three-month-old baby sister. I remember watching my mother sometimes cry sad tears alone, the weight of the world falling heavily on her shoulders.
One morning, Mom faced a terrible dilemma: she had to walk my brother to school, but she couldn’t take all three of us. With no other choice, she fed my baby sister, laid her into bed surrounded by pillows just in case she would fall, and asked me to stay still and quiet. “I’ll be back as fast as I can,” she promised.
But in a poor area where nothing was certain, being late was unavoidable. As the minutes stretched (延长) into an hour, I stood by the window, my small eyes fixed on the empty road. Suddenly, a thud (砰的一声) came from the bedroom, followed by a loud scream of my baby sister.

【答案】参考范文
I ran like an arrow to the room. My little sister had rolled off the bed and was crying on the cold wooden floor, her tiny face red with tears. Panic flooded my young heart, but I quickly picked her up, patting her gently, trying to calm her down. However, the more I tried to comfort her, the louder she cried. I held her in my arms and walked back and forth, but my four-year-old arms soon got tired. Just when I felt I could no longer hold on, a fierce love for my sister gave me unexpected strength. I held her even tighter and let out a cry for help. (103 words)
Then I saw Mom running towards us with a pale face full of anxiety. The moment I caught sight of her, I felt a wave of relief. She had heard our cries and rushed towards us quickly. Breathless as she was, she knelt down and hugged us both tightly, tears welling up in her eyes. As she held us, the world felt safe again. Decades have passed, but when I look back, I can still feel that pressure in my chest — the heavy weight of my sister and the even heavier weight of the responsibility I took on that day. It taught me that even the smallest heart can carry a massive burden when it’s carried with love. (107 words)

C
