Passage 1
China has made great progress in controlling deserts over the past 30 years. Through hard work and smart plans, large areas of deserts have been turned into green land.
One famous example is Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia. This success story shows how deserts can become useful land. By planting special grasses and trees, people have fixed moving sand and increased forest coverage from 5% to 53% since 1988. Local farmers now grow fruits like grapes in this “green wall”, which also increases their income.
Science and technology play key roles in this fight. The government has used both traditional and modern methods. In Ningxia, workers lay wheat straw (麦草) in checkerboard patterns (草方格沙障) to hold sand. This low-cost sand-fixing technology is now used in 13 countries. Satellites and drones (无人机) help monitor plant growth across 176 million hectares of protected land.
More than 200 million people have joined tree-planting activities.
Since 2000, China has reduced desert areas by over 2,000 square kilometres yearly—the fastest rate in the world. The “Great Green Wall” project aims to plant 35 billion trees by 2050.
China’s experience brings hope to other countries. This model not only improves the environment but also helps share knowledge globally. China has trained over 2, 000 experts from Africa and the Middle East, showing that deserts can be changed into rich land.

Using cameras and phones to record life has many advantages. It helps us keep these valuable moments that we may not be able to remember forever. It also allows us to share these moments with others, whether it is through social media or simply showing them to friends and family.
However, in public places, we must be careful of taking photos.
Some people may feel uncomfortable if someone takes a photo of them without asking. So it’s important to get people’s agreement first. What’s more, it is important to remember that taking photos should not be the only thing about our experiences.
Recently, the popularity of “checking in (打卡)” has risen. A lot of people travel to a place, take photos, and share them on social platforms for likes and comments from others. They miss out on the scenery itself and even more. What’s the true purpose of taking photos while you are travelling? Most people spent their free time watching TV or chatting with neighbors. Shopping had to be done in physical stores. People usually took buses or walked to work.
But now, high technology changes everything. Online shopping is very popular. People can buy almost everything they need at home. People’s ways of entertainment are also colorful. They can watch short videos, take online courses and join online clubs in their free time. More people choose to take shared bikes, subways or drive private cars to work, which saves a lot of time.
However, the fast-changing lifestyle also brings some troubles. Many people are used to staying at home and seldom go out to exercise. They spend too much time on electronic products, which is bad for their health. Also, online communication makes some people lack real face-to-face talk with family and friends.

In the past few years, great changes have taken place in my hometown, Hebei. Life today is quite different from what it used to be.
Technology is changing farming, and making farming smarter and better. In Handan, a special wheat (小麦) called “Zhongxinmai 998” was sent into space. The seeds (种子) changed there, and now this wheat can fight against bad weather and produce more food. In Xingtai, smart machines follow the Beidou system to plant crops (庄稼) in straight rows at the same depth. In this way, every plant gets enough sunlight and air. As a result, over 8% more plants come out of the ground, and they grow better and faster.
Transportation has also improved a lot. High-speed railway stations have been built, connecting our city with more places in China. From 2020 to 2025, a total of 105 tourist trains ran in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area. They travelled to over 100 cities, carrying about 40,000 passengers in all.
Moreover, living conditions have become much better. Tall buildings and shopping malls provide people with comfortable homes and more ways to have fun. Old neighborhoods are repaired, and broken roads are now smooth and safe. Dirty riversides have become clean parks with flowers and trees. In many villages, buses carry both people and packages (包裹), making life easier for farmers.

The houses were very old and sometimes the rain might drop into the rooms. Now, the living condition is much better and more comfortable. We can see that the roads are wider and the houses are brighter.
Since 2016, the tourism industry in Bacha Village has developed rapidly. The tourism industry in Bacha brings earnings for the villagers. Last year, more than 60,000 visitors came here, and the income (收入) for each person in the village increased to 25,600 yuan. All of the changes are increasing the villagers’ confidence in the future.
You Mingfen, a 57-year-old local woman, opened a hotel in her own two-floor house. Her family offer hand-made gifts made of fish skin and bones to the guests from all over China. “The busiest tourism season in Bacha lasts from May to October. It can bring us more than 50,000 yuan a year,” she said, “in winter, we can stay in a warm room and enjoy the leisure (休闲) time. It was impossible before. At that time, we almost depended on fishing for a living.”
Thanks to the good policies of the government, villagers get more ways to make money. Many young people now come back from big cities and work in their own hometown. The small village sits on a cliff (悬崖) of eight hundred meters high. People could only get up to it by climbing a 2,556-step metal ladder. Chen Beier was making a program about it.
In October, 2021, China reached an important goal. It had done away with extreme poverty (贫穷). Many people outside couldn’t believe it. After all, China has a large number of poor villages. In order to show the truth to people, Chen set out to make the program No Poverty Land.
It was difficult to finish the trip. When she was halfway up the ladder to Atule’er, for example, Chen felt so tired that she could hardly go any further. She was also afraid of heights. Some people advised her to give up on the climb. But the woman set her teeth and continued her climb. This metal ladder, in fact, is only six years old. Before it was built, it wasn’t convenient to climb the mountain and villagers used a ladder made of plants. The government also built houses for the villagers at the foot of the mountain. Through the program No Poverty Land, people can easily see how life in poor places of China has been improved.

Passage 4
