It all started with a short video.I watched a boy finish a long-distance run on TV before
his family went for a relaxing picnic in the countryside. The lively scene touched me deeply,
and a special idea came into my mind at once.I,an eight-year-old boy, also hoped to join a
欧
wonderful outdoor picnic.Unlike most kids who chose to ride or walk casually,I made up my
mind to get there by running all the way.
I was born with weak legs,so long-distance running had always been tough for me.
Running to the distant picnic site was absolutely a huge challenge.Even so,my dad made a
deal with me,and we started strict training right away.Over the following three years,I
stuck to daily practice.I learned to run steadily, adjust my speed properly and build up
physical strength. My family and teachers never left me alone, offering sincere care and
constant encouragement all the time.
Sometimes my legs ached terribly and felt tired after hours of practice, yet I held on
firmly.At last,the long-expected day arrived.I stood at the starting point,with my family
and friends gathering around to cheer for me.My dad gently asked if I needed a hand, but I
replied with a firm "No".I stood steady, began to run slowly, and then gradually sped up
with everyone's warm support.
Suddenly,I tripped over a small stone and lost my pace.I stayed calm, because we had
practiced to deal with such situations.I got to my feet quickly, took a deep breath and kept
moving forward.Before long,I arrived at the destination.My mom waited there,wearing a
bright smile and holding her arms wide to give me a big hug.
This experience taught me a valuable lesson,Life is full of unexpected troubles. When
线
difficulties stand in your way, never choose to quit.Pull yourself together and keep moving
toward your goal,Your hard work will surely pay off,and there will always be warm-hearted
people cheering for you along the journey.

An environmental group,NatureServe, says 40 percent of animals and 34 percent of
plants in the United States are at risk of disappearing. The group recently released a report
based on 50 years of data from over 1,000 scientists across the country. It also found that 41
percent of ecosystems, including life forms, land and water, are facing collapse.
Many kinds of creatures are in danger, including crayfish, cacti, and freshwater mussels.
For example, the Venus flytrap,a plant that"eats"insects,is now only found in the wild in
a few places in North and South Carolina.About half of all U.S.cactus species and 200 kinds
of trees may die out.Large northern grasslands are also among the most threatened
ecosystems. The report provides pictures and maps showing where animals and plants are
most at risk.
The main threats include environmental destruction,land-use change, invasive species,
river pollution, and climate change.California,Texas, and the southeastern U.S.have the
highest percentages of species at risk.Scientists say this is partly because these areas have
many different forms of life and also have seen a lot of population growth in recent years.
Sean O'Brien is the president of NatureServe. He said the data in the report was very
worrying. He hopes the report will help lawmakers pass wildlife protection laws.John Kanter
is a biologist with the National Wildlife Federation,a non-profit group also based in Virginia.
He noted that the report could steer state officials in creating effective action plans.
Currently, federal money for wildlife protection is limited, but a proposed bill would greatly
inerease it.
Kanter added,"Our biodiversity is like a nature savings account,If we don't keep track
of what's out there and what the threats are, there's no way to take action first."He believes
that with better information, people can protect nature and build a healthier future for all
living things. The report gives hope that by working together, humans can save endangered
species and keep the planet beautiful for generations to come,
28.How did the group get the findings?
A.By interviewing local officials.
B.By taking pictures and maps.

Archaeologists and researchers at the ancient Roman site of Pompeii have used artificial
intelligence (AI)for the first time to digitally rebuild the face of a man killed in the AD 79
eruption of Mount Vesuvius that covered the city, offering a new way to understand one of
history's most famous natural disasters.
The digital picture shows a man whose remains, along with those of another person,
were discovered was trying to get away from the city toward the coast of what is now Italy
during the volcanic eruption.Researchers believe the man died early in the disaster, during a
heavy fall of volcanic material.
The rebuilding was done by the Pompeii Archaeological Park, which announced on its
website that it was done with the University of Padua and based on archaeological survey data
from digs near the Porta Stabia burial ground, just outside the walls of the ancient city.
The announcement shows the Al-generated image of what the man could have looked
like.He is shown running along a rough,debris-covered road,holding a large,shallow bowl
over his head and using it as a shield while Mount Vesuvius is seen erupting in the
background. The man was also carrying an oil lamp,a small iron ring and 10 bronze coins,
personal objects that offer insight into his last moments as well as into daily life in Pompeii
before the disaster.
Pompeii,a UNESCO World Heritage site near Naples, was buried under ash and pumice
when Vesuvius erupted nearly 2,000 years ago, keeping the city and the remains of thousands
of its people in very fine detail.
Old accounts, including those of Roman writer Pliny the Younger, describe Pompeii's
residents using objects to protect themselves as ash and debris covered the city. The digital
picture was created by using AI and photo-editing techniques designed to turn skeletal and
archaeological data into a realistic human likeness.
32.In what aspect can the picture offer help?
A.Finding more ancient remains near Pompeii
B.Rebuilding the old walls and ground of Pompeii.
C.Showing the daily diet of the people in Pompeii.
D.Studying the volcanic eruption destroying Pompeii.
33.What was the man in the picture doing?
A.Escaping from Pompeii.
B.Observing the volcano.
C.Cooking his food.
D.Collecting volcanic material.
34.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The cause of the eruption
B.The daily life of the man,
C.The details of the image.
D.The features of Pompeii.
