When Lida Frydrychova first climbed Mount Temple 27 years ago, she didn’t know there was a “list” of 11,000-foot peaks (顶峰) in Canada. Born in Czechia, she moved to Calgary a decade later. To enjoy the nearby Rockies, she tried rock climbing.
“I love the views from peaks, the adventure of faraway places, and the physical challenge,” she said. She then took up rock and ice climbing, skills needed for higher mountains. Courses with the Alpine Club of Canada improved her skills and helped her find reliable (可靠的) partners. Working full-time, she climbed on weekends and holidays, even traveling to the Alps.
As she neared the end of the 11,000er list, only 10 peaks remained. These were tough, with long hikes and narrow weather windows. With her partner Allen Chee, she finally reached the top of her last one, Hungabee, in August, 2025. “I was happy, but conditions were hard. When the sun came out, the views opened, and I felt relief,” she said.
Among her favorites were Mount Edith Cavell’s East Ridge for its rock quality and amazing views, as well as Tsar, Hungabee, and Clemenceau for their technical challenges and wonderful views. However, some peaks proved far less enjoyable. Mount Robson, The Helmet, and Whitehorn Mountain required many attempts due to bad weather and difficult routes. Her worst experiences were Whitehorn and Lunette, both having very poor rock quality.
Lida is thankful for the support of her boyfriend Rob and her experienced partners, now close friends. Most importantly, she encourages women to take the lead. “I believe it is even more important for women to become independent in the mountains and have the confidence to lead and make decisions,” she said. “Don’t just follow — make your own plan and find partners whose skills go well with yours.” She said she was safe because of careful planning and patience. “Don’t rush trying to get them all done,” she advised. “Instead, enjoy the journey and the people you do it with.”
24. What mainly drove Lida to climb peaks?
A. Fame and awards. B. Love for adventure.
C. Pressure from work. D. Easy climbing routes.
25. What can we learn about the last ten peaks Lida climbed?
A. They needed appropriate timing.
B. They had more beautiful views.
C. They were completed in a year.
D. They were easier than expected.
26. Why were Lida’s bad experiences mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To stress the skills of climbing.
B. To show goals can be achieved.
C. To record her feelings truthfully.
D. To give a warning to other climbers.
27. What is Lida’s main suggestion to women climbers?
A. To lead and stay patient.
B. To challenge rocky mountains.
C. To master climbing skills.
D. To follow experienced climbers.
B 25. A 26. C 27. A

根据第二段中莉达说的话“I love the views from peaks, the adventure of faraway places, and the physical challenge (我热爱山顶的风景、远方之地的冒险,还有身体层面的挑战)”可知,对冒险的热爱是驱使莉达登山的主要原因。
根据第三段的“These were tough, with long hikes and narrow weather windows. (这些山峰难度很大,需要长距离徒步,且合适的登山天气窗口很短。)”可知,攀登这十座山峰需要合适的时机。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段的“Among her favorites were Mount Edith Cavell’s East Ridge for its rock quality and amazing views, as well as Tsar, Hungabee, and Clemenceau for their technical challenges and wonderful views. However, some peaks proved far less enjoyable. Mount Robson, The Helmet, and Whitehorn Mountain required many attempts due to bad weather and difficult routes. Her worst experiences were Whitehorn and Lunette, both having very poor rock quality.
根据最后一段的“Most importantly, she encourages women to take the lead. “Instead, enjoy the journey and the people you do it with.”(最重要的是,她鼓励女性主动牵头带队。“我认为女性更需要在山野中做到独立,有信心主导行程、做出判断,”她说,“不要一味跟从别人——制定属于自己的计划,寻找技术与你互补的搭档。”她表示,细致规划与足够耐心保障了她每一次登山的安全。她建议道:“不要急于一口气爬完所有山峰。不如好好享受攀登的过程,珍惜同行的伙伴。”)”可知,莉达对女性登山者的主要建议是主动领头且保持耐心。
C
It was 2021, and Suzanne Simard was on Vancouver Island, where activists were trying to stop the Teal-Jones Group, an industrial logging (伐木) company, from cutting down forests.
She decided to explain the science to anyone who would listen — in the way only an earnest Canadian forestry scientist could. She spoke slowly, looked everyone straight in the eye, and never joked. “Forests grow back slowly. After clear-cutting, it takes decades to balance carbon (碳). It takes centuries to return to normal,” she told them. “We don’t have decades for these forests to recover from clear-cutting. In the hundreds of years it takes for a forest to develop, our planet could warm by more than 5℃.”
Her words carried weight. If you had been among the nearly 6 million viewers of Simard’s 2016 TED Talk, you would understand why: few people could speak about trees with such deep belief as she did.
She was a Canadian national treasure and global environmental leader, inspiring the character of Patricia in Richard Powers’ 2018 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Overstory.
By tracking radioactive particles (放射性粒子) between trees, Simard’s research showed that individual trees kept exchanging information and resources with one another through underground fungal (真菌) networks. “Trees talk,” was how she put it in her TED Talk. “Through back-and-forth communication, they strengthened the whole community.”
In her book Finding the Mother Tree, it was clear that Simard herself was a kind of mother tree — a large, deeply rooted figure with a key role in supporting the next generation of forest scientists. As she planted over 100,000 trees around the world, Simard wrote of her connections with local communities, and of the activism she had adopted. “Science was not enough,” she had decided.
Therefore, she sought other ways to promote protection, one of which was writing books. Unlike academic papers written in formal language, books like this allowed her to share her ideas through poetry and passion. This was the kind of book with a very long thanks section. Others had helped Simard find her way, and she was writing so that more might follow it too — or create their own paths.
28. What does the underlined word “earnest” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Clever. B. Serious.
C. Humorous. D. Kind.
29. Why does the author stress the figure of 6 million in paragraph 3?
A. To compare different ways of learning.
B. To show the high cost of online speeches.
C. To encourage readers to watch the video.
D. To prove Simard’s influence and popularity.
30. Why does the author call Simard “a kind of mother tree”?
A. She speaks in a TED Talk.
B. She connects with the locals.
C. She writes books of poetry.
D. She supports the next generation.
31. What do we know about Simard’s book Finding the Mother Tree?
A. It is written in formal language.
B. It lists the people who helped her.
C. It focuses on fighting logging companies.
D. It includes poetry rather than scientific facts.
B 29. D 30. D 31. B
根据文章第二段“She decided to explain the science to anyone who would listen — in the way only an earnest Canadian forestry scientist could. She spoke slowly, looked everyone straight in the eye, and never joked. (她决心向每一位愿意倾听的人讲解其中的科学原理,带着加拿大林业科学家独有的earnest。她语速平缓,直视每个人的眼睛,从不开玩笑。)”可知,西马德讲解科学内容时从不开玩笑,是认真严肃的,因此可推测划线单词“earnest”意为“认真的、严肃的”,对应选项B。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Her words carried weight. If you had been among the nearly 6 million viewers of Simard’s 2016 TED Talk, you would understand why: few people could speak about trees with such deep belief as she did. (她的话语很有分量。如果你是西马德2016年TED演讲近600万观众中的一员,你就会明白为什么:很少有人能像她那样带着如此坚定的信念谈论树木。)”可推知,作者提到600万这个数字是为了证明西马德深受大众欢迎,影响力很大。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第六段“In her book Finding the Mother Tree, it was clear that Simard herself was a kind of mother tree — a large, deeply rooted figure with a key role in supporting the next generation of forest scientists. (在她的著作《寻找母树》中,很明显西马德自己就是一种母树——一个根基深厚的大人物,在支持下一代林业科学家方面发挥着关键作用。)”可知,作者称西马德为“一种母树”是因为她支持下一代林业研究者的成长。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“This was the kind of book with a very long thanks section. Others had helped Simard find her way, and she was writing so that more might follow it too — or create their own paths. (这本书的致谢部分很长。很多人帮助西马德找到了她的道路,她写作是为了让更多人也可以追随这条道路,或是开创自己的道路。)”可知,这本书列出了帮助过她的人。
D
In the past, our love for sugar helped our ancestors (祖先) survive. It gave them quick energy from rare sweet foods. Today, however, that same desire often drives us to buy chocolate late at night, even though we know the risks. Eating too much sugar can cause health problems, and it even harms our memory.
This raises an important question: Can we repair the damage by simply changing our diet? According to a recent study on animals, the answer is yes — but only to a limited degree.
Researchers reviewed 27 experiments on mice to understand how switching from an unhealthy diet to a healthy one affects the brain. The results showed that reducing sugar could improve memory for animals previously fed high-sugar diets. However, their memory never fully returned to the level of animals that had always eaten healthy food.
The study focused mainly on memory, while also checking behavior like activity levels and signs of anxiety. It found that animals switched to healthier diets performed better in memory tests than those still eating junk food. But those improvements were incomplete. Even after weeks on a healthy diet, memory did not return to the level seen in animals that had never eaten an unhealthy diet.
Further analysis (分析) showed that memory improved more clearly after stopping high-fat diets, but not after cutting out sugar. Diets high in added sugar, whether mixed with fat or not, showed almost no recovery. This suggests sugar may be the main reason why memory struggles to repair itself.
Scientists believe the hippocampus, a part of the brain responsible for memory and learning, plays a central role. Unhealthy diets are known to reduce both its size and function, which may explain why memory loss continues even after diet improves.
Although these findings come from animal studies, they carry an important message for humans. Some think a better diet can quickly fix everything. But the truth is, you can’t always go back to normal. Improving your diet is always helpful, but preventing long-term damage is even more important. When it comes to sugar, acting sooner rather than later may be the best way to protect your brain.
32. What is the purpose of referring to our ancestors’ love for sugar?
A. To honor old-time survival skills. B. To explain modern sugar addiction.
C. To argue against unhealthy choices. D. To compare ancient and modern diets.
33. What did the study find about memory recovery after improving diet?
A. It recovered partially. B. It returned to normal.
C. It stayed unchanged. D. It became worse than ever.
34. What might the author agree with?
A. Fixing damage through diet. B. Depending on high-fat diets.
C. Ignoring sugar’s harm to the brain. D. Avoiding sugar-related damage early on.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Improve Your Diet Fast? B. Sugar’s Damage: Hard to Find
C. Can We Undo the Harm of Sugar? D. Sugar: A Quick Energy Source
B 33. A 34. D 35. C

根据第一段“In the past, our love for sugar helped our ancestors (祖先) survive. It gave them quick energy from rare sweet foods. Today, however, that same desire often drives us to buy chocolate late at night, even though we know the risks. Eating too much sugar can cause health problems, and it even harms our memory.(过去,我们对糖的热爱帮助祖先们生存下来。糖能从稀有的甜食中为他们提供快速的能量。然而如今,同样的欲望却常常驱使我们深夜买巧克力,尽管我们知道其中的风险。摄入过多糖分可能导致健康问题,甚至损害我们的记忆力)”可知,作者提及祖先对糖的喜爱是为了解释现代的糖瘾。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The results showed that reducing sugar could improve memory for animals previously fed high-sugar diets. However, their memory never fully returned to the level of animals that had always eaten healthy food.(结果表明,减少糖分可以改善先前摄入高糖饮食动物的记忆力。然而,它们的记忆能力始终未能完全恢复到一直食用健康食物的动物水平)”可知,研究发现,改善饮食后记忆部分恢复。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Improving your diet is always helpful, but preventing long-term damage is even more important. When it comes to sugar, acting sooner rather than later may be the best way to protect your brain.(改善饮食总是有益的,但预防长期损害则更为重要。说到糖分,尽早采取行动可能是保护大脑的最佳方式)”可知,作者认同应该提前避免糖分带来的损害。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其根据第一段“Eating too much sugar can cause health problems, and it even harms our memory.(吃太多的糖会导致健康问题,甚至会损害我们的记忆力。)”以及第二段“This raises an important question: Can we repair the damage by simply changing our diet? According to a recent study on animals, the answer is yes — but only to a limited degree.(这就提出了一个重要的问题:我们能通过简单地改变饮食来修复损伤吗?根据最近对动物的一项研究,答案是肯定的——但只是在有限的程度上。)”以及最后一段“Improving your diet is always helpful, but preventing long-term damage is even more important. When it comes to sugar, acting sooner rather than later may be the best way to protect your brain.(改善你的饮食总是有帮助的,但防止长期损害更重要。当涉及到糖时,尽早采取行动可能是保护大脑的最好方法。)”可知,本文围绕“过量吃糖造成的损伤能否通过改善饮食消除”这一核心问题展开论述,指出科学研究证明调整饮食只能小幅修复损伤,糖造成的伤害难完全逆转,及早控糖才能保护大脑。C选项“我们能否逆转糖分造成的伤害?”最符合文章标题。

Back then, I didn’t like the dark on land, and if something touched my leg in the water, I would get really frightened. Naturally, the dark sea just made me especially nervous. However, because I knew how much this chance meant, I tried to hide my fear and get on with it. ____36____ But inside, my heart raced.
What I remember is unclear: the brown water of that coastline and the red and green lights hanging from our goggles (护目镜). There were no clear conversations or details I can remember. ____37____ Just unclear moments and nerves. And yet, some of my most powerful, emotional swims since then have been in the dark.
____38____ It was early summer and my friend Amanda encouraged me to come along for a night swim in the hope of seeing them. I had no idea what to expect. The experience was amazing. I walked into the water and trusted the people near me. After a few minutes, when I started swimming, I saw a line of sparkling (闪烁的) lights in the water. It took my breath away.
Every move made lights appear. It felt like magic. The lights stayed and every time I moved, I saw more shining lights. It was unusual and quietly extraordinary. ____39____
It may seem strange to invite you into darkness in May just as the days lengthen and light stays further into the evening. ____40____ Whether you are planning your first night swim or training for a long and difficult challenge, I hope you can discover the magic that waits after sunset.
A. Outwardly I put on a brave face.
B. I can’t think of any beauty or joy.
C. The other swimmers seemed calm and confident.
D. But this is a beautiful time to experiment and play.
E. My friend Amanda had been swimming at night for years.
F. One of my favorite swimming memories was looking for sea lights.
G. It is a gift from the wild that feels almost unreal until you actually experience it.
A 37. B 38. F 39. G 40. D
根据空前的“However, because I knew how much this chance meant, I tried to hide my fear and get on with it.(然而,因为我知道这次机会意义有多重大,我努力隐藏恐惧、坚持下去。)” A选项“Outwardly I put on a brave face (我表面上装作十分勇敢)”中的Outwardly与后文inside形成鲜明对比,符合转折逻辑,贴合语境。
根据空前的“There were no clear conversations or details I can remember.(我记不清清晰的对话和具体细节了。)” B选项“I can’t think of any beauty or joy (我回想不起任何美好与愉悦的感受)”承接上文记忆模糊的内容,引出后文仅有紧张感,符合语境。
根据空后的“It was early summer and my friend Amanda encouraged me to come along for a night swim in the hope of seeing them.(初夏时节,朋友阿曼达鼓励我夜泳,希望能见到它们。)” F选项“One of my favorite swimming memories was looking for sea lights (我最喜爱的游泳回忆之一是寻找海上荧光)”总领本段内容,引出下文神奇的夜泳见闻,符合语境。
根据空前的“It was unusual and quietly extraordinary.(这不同寻常,静谧又非凡。)” G选项“It is a gift from the wild that feels almost unreal until you actually experience it (这是大自然的馈赠,亲身经历前会觉得无比虚幻)”中的It指代前文水中闪烁的光影,承接上文对美景的赞美,贴合语境。
根据空前的“It may seem strange to invite you into darkness in May just as the days lengthen and light stays further into the evening.(五月白昼渐长、夜色姗姗来迟,此时邀请大家夜泳似乎有些奇怪。)” D选项“But this is a beautiful time to experiment and play (但这正是体验和享受夜泳的绝佳时段)”通过 But 转折,化解前文的违和感,收束全文并发出体验夜泳的期许,符合语境。

固定搭配at an early age,意为“在年少时”,early是以元音音素开头的单词,所以用不定冠词an。故填an。

Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Peter,
I’m glad to hear you’re preparing a speech on traditional Chinese festivals. Regarding your concern about AI, I believe it is a useful tool but should not replace personal thinking.
While AI helps organize ideas effectively, depending too much on it may make your speech sound robotic and impersonal. To truly connect with the audience, your unique voice matters most.
I suggest using AI only to outline key points. Then, enrich your speech with your own experiences, such as describing the lively atmosphere of a Chinese festival you celebrated. This mix will make your speech both informative and real. I hope this is of help to you.
Yours,
Li Hua

Sherry Housley, a 76-year-old woman, sat on a fallen tree, very tired. She had just walked four miles down a mountain road blocked by fallen trees. Looking at the empty lot where her house once stood, she broke down in tears. “It’s all gone,” she cried. Without help, she believed her life was over. She began the long journey to her sister’s home, where she had waited out the worst of Hurricane Helene.
Helene was the strongest hurricane to hit North Carolina’s mountains in many years, damaging thousands of homes in Yancey County and nearby areas. However, the disaster brought out the goodness of those who survived. A local housing worker Stephanie Johnson quickly organized a nonprofit group called “Rebuilding Hollers” to help survivors.
Stephanie and her team raised money, accepted donations and even sold two jeeps. They set up a supply center to give tools and materials to people who could repair their own homes. For those who could not, like Sherry, Stephanie asked local builders to help.
Four days later, Sherry finally made it to town, hoping to find tools to build a house from old wood. But everything had already been claimed. Just as she felt disappointed, Stephanie learned about her situation and immediately found a solution.
“I’ve made arrangements with the carpentry (木工) teacher at Mountain Heritage High School,” Stephanie told Sherry. “His students are going to build small homes, and you’ll get the first one.”
At the school’s large workshop, teacher Jeremy Dotts runs a program where students build small structures. When Stephanie asked if they could build a house, Jeremy agreed but worried about the cost of materials. Stephanie simply promised, “I’ll find them.”
She kept her word, delivering a truckload of wood and supplies. The students studied the blueprints and got to work. To solve the problem of moving the finished house, they designed it with a folding roof “We’ll make the roof steep (陡峭的) so snow slides off,” Jeremy explained to his eager students.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
When Sherry visited the workshop, the students showed her the small house.

Two weeks later, the students and Stephanie’s team helped transport the house to a suitable spot,
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
When Sherry visited the workshop, the students showed her the small house. It was only 16 by 13 feet, but it looked perfect. Sherry touched the wooden walls, tears of joy running down her face. “This is going to be my home,” she said softly. The students smiled proudly as they explained the folding roof design. Jeremy Dotts touched her shoulder. “We built it strong,” he promised. Sherry could hardly believe that these young people cared so much about helping her after she lost everything.
Two weeks later, the students and Stephanie’s team helped transport the house to a suitable spot. They drove it up the mountain to Sherry’s land and set it down carefully. Neighbors gathered around to watch and help. Stephanie handed Sherry the key. “Welcome home,” she said. Walking inside her new house, Sherry felt safe for the first time since the storm. Though small, the house was warm and strong. Looking at all the smiling faces around her, Sherry realized that kindness had rebuilt her world. She finally had a place to call home again.

Every move made lights appear. It felt like magic. The lights stayed and every time I moved, I saw more shining lights. It was unusual and quietly extraordinary. ____39____

I was lucky because my family's home was safe, but I saw how much the children in my neighborhood suffered. They lost not only their homes, but also their school supplies. That's why I decided to start a small project called bags for kids. I ask my friends and neighbors to donate schoolbags, pencils, no books and so on. In the first three weeks, we collected more than eight hundred items and gave them to children in need. Seeing the smiles on their faces made me feel very glad. Now i'm here to ask for your help. If you have unused school things at home, please share them with those in need. Together, we can help these children return to school with hope.
