Starry nights, sunflowers, and vivid self-portraits (自画像)—these are the features of Vincent van Gogh, one of the world’s most beloved artists. Though his work is now celebrated globally, his life was filled with struggle and misunderstanding.
Born in 1853 in a small Dutch village, Van Gogh was a serious and sensitive child. He loved to draw, and his work showed talent, but no one encouraged him to become an artist. Instead, his father thought he should take a proper job. Then the young man wandered from job to job with little success and very little money, becoming more depressed with each failure. In March 1880, however, just before his 27th birthday, something changed inside Van Gogh. He realized that he was meant to be a painter.
In 1886, Van Gogh moved to Paris, hoping to learn about the color techniques being used by Impressionist artists there. Instead of grays and browns, his work began to use blue and red, and then yellow and orange. Soon he began to see life differently: Go slow. Stop thinking. Look around. You’ll see something beautiful if you open yourself. These were the rules that guided his art. With his creative color uses, Van Gogh wanted to show others how to better appreciate a flower, the night sky, or a person’s face.
However, few who lived in Van Gogh’s time appreciated his work. Many laughed when they saw his paintings, which hurt the sensitive artist terribly. Van Gogh’s mental health worsened sharply. In the spring of 1889, he was sent to a mental hospital, where he painted masterpieces like The Starry Night during periods of calm. “Working on my pictures,” he wrote, “is almost a necessity for me to get better.”
In 1890, at 37, he died, having sold only one painting in his lifetime. Over a century after his death, Van Gogh remains extremely p…. people find pieces of themselves in him. This may also explain the high prices paid for Van Gogh’s work. When we buy one of Van Gogh’s paintings, we are not just buying art—we are buying a piece of his story.
21.What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A.Before 1880, Van Gogh had not found his real life goal.
B.Van Gogh’s father believed painting could bring him a good life.
C.Van Gogh was encouraged to learn drawing when he was young.
D.Van Gogh became depressed because no one bought his paintings.
22.What can we infer from Van Gogh’s words, “Working on my pictures is almost a necessity for me to get better”?
A.Van Gogh only painted when he was feeling better.
B.Van Gogh’s illness made it impossible for him to paint.
C.Van Gogh believed painting was more important than his health.
D.Creating art helped Van Gogh express himself and reduce his pain.
23.Put the following events in the correct time order according to the text.

Each of us has dreams and goals for our future. What makes us study and make progress each day is closely connected with our personal dream and goal.
But why do you have dreams and goals and still end up with nothing? What separates successful people from the dreamers is their persistent (锲而不舍的) action. If you find your lessons very hard in school, you must work hard and not give up. Try and keep trying, and you’ll be sure to successfully deal with any difficulty you meet with. If we have a hard lesson today, let us try our best to learn it well and then we shall be prepared for a harder one tomorrow. This is the famous formula (公式) for success:
Dream > Believe > Achieve
Most people have what they want (Dream) and think they can realize their dreams (Believe). And then they do nothing. They just imagine their dreams can come true. When they get tired of waiting and lose a lot, they get bored. They say angrily how terrible their life is.
I personally believe that if you really want to achieve your dreams and goals in life, you have to add one thing to your success formula:
Dream > Believe > Act > Achieve
For me, the act is the most important thing for success and that’s to Take Persistent Action (Act). If you say “I can’t do it” and give up, you can never do anything valuable. However, “I’ll try” creates wonders. Let’s remember that there will be obstacles in our life. We must face them bravely and solve them. Success is not something that falls down from the sky. Most successful people made their dreams come true because of their persistent action.
Please remember: Action is the bridge that connects our dreams and goals to reality.
31.What should you do when you find your lessons very hard?
A.Ask people for help. B.Try and keep trying.
C.Get ready to create wonders. D.Prepare for a harder one.
32.Which does the writer add to the famous formula?
A.Act. B.Achieve. C.Connect. D.Create.
33.What does the underlined word “obstacles” mean?
A.Dangers. B.Imaginations. C.Wonders. D.Difficulties.
34.The writer uses the formula “Dream> Believe > Act> Achieve” ________.
A.to support (支持) his idea B.to ask readers to explain it
C.to show what his goals are D.to compare it with a bridge
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Doing Something Valuable B.Studying Hard and Making Progress
C.Realizing Dreams with Persistent Action D.Separating Successful People from Dreams
【答案】31.B 32.A 33.D 34.A 35.C
【导语】本文主要阐述梦想和成功之间的关系,告诉我们只有通过实际行动才能把梦想变为现实。
31.细节理解题。根据“If you find your lessons very hard in school, you must work hard and not give up. Try and keep trying, and you’ll be sure to successfully deal with any difficulty you meet with.”可知,如果你觉得学校功课很难,你必须努力学习,不要放弃。故选B。

In 2008, Zhang Guimei, a hard-working teacher, founded a free girls-only senior high school in Huaping, Yunnan Province. Her story, made into a TV series (连续剧) named She and Her Girls (《山花烂漫时》), has been well-received since it came out.
The series is successful because it feels real. Instead of showing Zhang’s life to be one full of pain, it focuses on Zhang’s strength to deal with problems. In the poor villages of Huaping, people believe it’s meaningless for girls to receive education. Because of this, many girls are forced to leave school at a young age. To help them come back to school, Zhang and other teachers make many home visits. They never give up, even when villagers are unsupportive.
From raising money to enrolling (招收) students, Zhang meets problems every step of the way. However, she is always ready for whatever life throws at her. Showing Zhang’s ability to face challenges, the series tells an inspiring story that wins people’s hearts.
In the series, Zhang’s work brings her great joy. Her happiness comes from the support of the government and her workmates. Even when things go against her will, she is able to see the bright side. The series breathes new life into (注入活力) Zhang’s story by showing her strength and positive attitude.
