B
At the start of my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me to write my name. After I put it down, he said, plainly: “Now I will teach you how to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an uneasy relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese but they didn’t speak Mandarin. Unfamiliar with Chinese characters, they used fortune tellers to decide my name based on the ideal number of strokes (笔画) for each character, which was calculated for the best fortune. Chinese names can be truly poetic. Not mine. Embarrassingly, the characters for my Chinese name mean, roughly, “old,” “barley” and “warm.” My personal and cultural histories were messy knots.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I embraced critical analysis and creative expression. It felt like a way to abandon the strict formalities that defined my early years in Singapore’s high-pressure education system, and with it, perhaps, parts of my identity. Suddenly, I felt the need to present myself in a way that Americans would accept. I put on an American accent and set aside my Chinese name. Ultimately, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to replicate (复制) the old masters’ techniques, thereby enhancing your own. Every week, my teacher would evaluate my writing. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Your challenge is in producing a bold stroke.” For years, I had prided myself on developing an image of integration and confidence despite deep insecurities, but my writing betrayed me.
I had been learning calligraphy to try to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. That first lesson came with the terrific promise that what had been shameful in myself could be made beautiful—and that I could be the one to do that work. I know now that what calligraphy teaches me is not the value of replication but the possibility that I could know myself more fully.
4. What criterion guided the selection of the author’s Chinese name?
A. Poetic sound patterns. B. Ideal symbolic images.
C. Favorable stroke counts. D. Positive literal meanings.
5. Why did the author adopt an American accent?
A. To break with tradition. B. To fit into the community.
C. To achieve academic success. D. To facilitate language learning.
6. What have we learned about the author’s experience with calligraphy?
A. It revealed her inner self. B. It improved her public image.
C. It presented no challenge to her. D. It enhanced her replication skills.
7. What has the author learned from calligraphy?
A. Fortune favors the bold. B. Embrace who you truly are.
C. Our roots define our identity. D. Planning is good, but doing is better.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. B

Imagine standing in front of a supermarket shelf with 40 types of jam. You might think more choices would make you happier, but research suggests otherwise. The “Paradox of Choice” is a fascinating concept that has interested sociologists for decades. On the surface, more options seem to offer more freedom and satisfaction. We live in an age when the vast abundance of choices, from streaming services to online shopping, should, in theory, make our lives better. However, research has shown that this overwhelming variety can lead to “decision paralysis,” where we get stuck with so many options that we can hardly make up our minds. In fact, an abundance of choices can reduce overall satisfaction with our decisions.
Psychologist Barry Schwartz explains that people who are presented with too many options tend to become “maximizers” — individuals who keep trying to find the best choice. They compare every feature, price, and possibility, often fearing that they might miss out on a better option. This leads to a state of constant regret, even before the decision is made, as they worry about what they might have overlooked. In contrast, “satisfiers” look for something that meets their basic needs and are generally happier with their outcomes. They don’t need the best option; they just need one that works for them. They are content with their choices because they aren’t paralyzed by the possibility of making the wrong one. While maximizers are trapped in endless comparison, satisfiers are content because they aren’t paralyzed by the fear of making the wrong choice.
Social media has made this paradox even worse by acting as a “never-ending comparison machine.” We no longer just compare ourselves to our neighbors, but we compare our lives to edited, idealized versions of other people’s lives around the world. This constant exposure to better alternatives only increases the sense of discontent with our own decisions.
To address this, some experts recommend voluntary limitation. By consciously limiting our choices, whether it’s through a minimalist wardrobe (衣柜) or a simplified diet, we can reduce unnecessary mental pressure that stops us from deciding easily. The goal is not to have less, but to free up space for what truly matters to us. By intentionally narrowing our options, we can make more room for meaningful experiences.
8. What is the author’s attitude to diverse choices?
A. Critical. B. Enthusiastic.
C. Dismissive. D. Defensive.
9. What is a typical behavior of a “satisfier”?
A. Making quick decisions naturally.
B. Feeling satisfied with every choice.
C. Seeking the perfect option constantly.
D. Caring much about online comparisons.
10. What role does social media play in the paradox of choice?
A. It helps people find better deals online.
B. It simplifies the decision-making process.
C. It provides a realistic view of others’ lives.
D. It fuels dissatisfaction with one’s own choices.
11. What does “voluntary limitation” imply in the last paragraph?
A. A lack of digital resources.
B. A loss of personal freedom.
C. A strategic reduction of choices.
D. A temporary break from technology.
【答案】8. A 9. A 10. D 11. C
【解析】
【导语】文章介绍了选择悖论,指出过多选择非但不能提升幸福感,反而会引发决策瘫痪、降低决策满意度。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“You might think more choices would make you happier, but research suggests otherwise.(你或许以为选择越多就越幸福,但研究表明事实恰恰相反。)”和“In fact, an abundance of choices can reduce overall satisfaction with our decisions.(事实上,选择过多反而会降低我们做决定后的整体满意度。)”可知,作者对繁多选择的态度是批判的。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“In contrast, “satisfiers” look for something that meets their basic needs and are generally happier with their outcomes. They don’t need the best option; they just need one that works for them. They are content with their choices because they aren’t paralyzed by the possibility of making the wrong one.(与之相反,满足型决策者只挑选能满足自身基本需求的事物,往往对最终选择更满意。他们不必追求最优选项,只求合适可用即可。他们对自己的选择心怀知足,不会因担心选错而犹豫不决。)”可知,知足型决策者的典型做法是不会陷入选择瘫痪,自然快速做决定。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Social media has made this paradox even worse by acting as a “never-ending comparison machine.”… This constant exposure to better alternatives only increases the sense of discontent with our own decisions.( 社交媒体如同一台永不停歇的攀比机器,进一步加剧了这种悖论。……频繁目睹各类更优质的备选事物,只会不断加深人们对自身选择的不满。)”可知,社交媒体加剧人们对自身选择的不满。
【11题详解】
词句猜测题。根据下文“By consciously limiting our choices...intentionally narrowing our options, we can make more room for meaningful experiences.(通过有意识地精简选择……主动缩小可选范围,我们就能为有意义的人生体验留出更多空间。)”可知,专家建议有策略地缩减选择,由此可知,voluntary limitation意为“策略性精简选择”。

Two years ago, Chris and Jenna Humphrey moved to their rural dream house, sitting in splendid isolation in the south Norfolk countryside. Now on three sides of their home, the fields are set to be filled with solar panels for one of Britain’s growing number of huge solar farms. “I’m all for solar — we have panels on our garage (车库) roof,” says Chris. “It just seems criminal that hundreds of new houses are being built down the road and none has solar panels, when they would benefit households. But my bigger concern is these solar farms. They seem to reflect big-business thinking aimed at generating profits — they are putting profits before the countryside, food production and the environment.”
With thousands of panels covering an extensive stretch of land, these projects are considered by some residents as industrial factories rather than green solutions. Their once peaceful and rural community is now under attack. A villager named Berry, for instance, is worried about pollution when panels are driven into the land supposedly protected for her drinking water.
Adding to the frustration is a growing sense that local decisions are subject to being overturned by a higher authority. In many cases, local councils hold a vote and decisively reject a solar farm plan. However, the application can then be sent to a national government minister for a final decision. This process makes people feel that their local democratic (民主的) rights have been taken away, with decisions about their community made far away in the capital. It’s a situation that has left many feeling angry and powerless.
For some landowners, their choice is shaped by economic reality. “A lot of the land we’re taking out of production is land that doesn’t make money. It just produces some low-grade feed for cattle,” says one of the farmers who have rented fields to a solar farm company. He says he is losing money on his wheat fields and the company will net him upwards of £1,000 per acre (英亩) per year. “People like to think the countryside never changes and always looks beautiful,” he says. The countryside has to make money like everywhere else. A lot of people support the solar farm. People are much more positive than is being made out.”
12. The word “criminal” (para.1) mainly expresses Chris’s criticism of _______.
A. the failure to use solar panels where appropriate
B. the large-scale construction of new houses
C. the profit-driven operation of solar farms
D. the increasing reliance on solar energy
13. According to para.2 and 3, some residents’ concern with solar farms is rooted in_________.
① the vast scale of solar farm projects.
② the potential operational risks in factories
③ the complex voting system facing the local community
④ the government decision-making process that ignores local voices
A. ①② B. ①④ C. ②③ D. ②④
14. What does the farmer’s situation in the last paragraph suggest?
A. A natural landscape appeals to local farmers more than an industrial one does.
B. The solar farm project can be a profitable alternative to conventional farming.
C. Realizing green goals outweighs satisfying local community needs.
D. Some farmers unwillingly rent their wheat fields to solar farm companies.
15. What’s the main focus of this passage?
A. The financial struggles faced by British farmers.
B. The environmental dangers caused by solar technology.
C. The government’s efforts to promote renewable energy.
D. The controversy over large solar farms in the countryside.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. B 15. D
【解析】

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“With thousands of panels covering an extensive stretch of land, these projects are considered by some residents as industrial factories rather than green solutions.(数千块光伏板覆盖大片土地,居民认为这类项目更像工厂而非环保方案。)”可知①占地规模大符合题意;根据第三段中“This process makes people feel that their local democratic (民主的) rights have been taken away, with decisions about their community made far away in the capital.(这套流程让民众感觉本地民主权利被剥夺,社区事务由首都远程定夺。)”可知④决策流程忽视本地民众声音符合;文中未提及太阳能农场存在工厂运营隐患②、复杂投票制度③,排除。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“He says he is losing money on his wheat fields and the company will net him upwards of £1,000 per acre (英亩) per year.(他称麦田一直在亏损,而太阳能公司每年每英亩能给他带来超1000 英镑净收入。)”
“The controversy over large solar farms in the countryside.(乡村地区大型太阳能农场的争议。)”符合题意。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My most memorable Thanksgiving happened last year at our local church, where a simple outreach program blossomed into a profound lesson on the power of sharing, care, and inclusion.
A week before Thanksgiving, with a few church members, we wanted to give away holiday meals for families in our community. We contacted neighbors and social workers for families who might be struggling. Their responses were overwhelming: a single mother, Amy, working two jobs to pay medical bills; an elderly couple, Mr and Mrs Jones, whose fixed income couldn’t stretch; the Tomas family, displaced by a recent fire...
Eventually, we created a list of 10 families in financial need, each to receive a Thanksgiving food basket. These were carefully prepared baskets with all necessities for a traditional holiday meal: golden stuffing mix, green beans, sweet potatoes, jellied cranberry sauce, flour, butter, onions, and dessert items, and even turkeys and hams.
That night, the fellowship hall buzzed with laughter and emotion. As each family arrived to pick up their basket, their gratitude was evident. Mr and Mrs Jones shared how this would be their first full meal together in weeks. Amy spoke quietly about job losses, and others about hardships. Yet, in that hall, there was warmth restored.
Just as the families were about to leave, a father, mother, and a child with worn but neat clothes stepped in. The father said they had simply heard through word of mouth that a church was giving out food and decided to come. Clearly, they were not on our list. I approached them and explained that we were unable to provide supplies today for an extra family due to limited resources. I felt so sorry as I looked at the family, hoping they would understand the difficult circumstances. The man responded with an awkward smile, saying, “Oh, never mind. We just came to see if anything was available. Thank you anyway.”

(1)续写词数应为150左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
Just as the disappointed family were about to leave, Mrs Jones stopped them. She hurried over with her neatly packed food basket. “Wait a moment,” she said gently, fetching an empty box from the corner of hall. She pulled out a bag of golden stuffing mix and laid it carefully into the box. Mr Jones stood beside her, nodded in agreement, “We don’t need so much food for just the two of us.” Inspired by their kindness, Amy reached into her basket for a jar of jellied cranberry sauce, while the Tomas family contributed six plump sweet potatoes. One by one, each family stepped forward and offered an item. Soon, the empty box was transformed into the 11th special basket, brimming with all the Thanksgiving necessities, woven together by the love of everyone present.
Seeing the special “basket”, the family were moved to tears. The mother quickly wiped her moist eyes with the back of her hand, and clutched her child tightly to her chest, while the father held the basket as if it were a precious treasure. “Thank you, thank you all so much,” he said hoarsely, his voice choked with deep gratitude. The child looked up at the crowd and whispered a shy yet sincere“thank you” too. As they left, the warm glow of the church lights fell on their figures, gently illuminating their path home. That night, we all grasped the true essence of Thanksgiving — it lies not just in giving, but in sharing hand in hand.

C
