B When Grace was in first grade, she and her best friend noticed that at the end of each school year, barely used notebooks and pencils were being thrown away. “We started collecting them from our classrooms,” Grace says. “It was such a waste — there were kids who needed these things.” That small effort grew into Restoring Rainbows, a group that collects lightly used supplies from schools across the state and gives them to students in need. Now, instead of throwing these items into the trash, students and teachers donate them. Over the summer, the group sorts and cleans everything, then hands them out in August to partner schools and community groups serving low-income families. “Having your own supplies makes you feel ready and like you belong,” Grace explains. “We’re making sure kids can start the school year with the tools they need.” So far, Restoring Rainbows has given out more than 30,000 items, growing from two volunteers to over 70 across several towns. “It’s a lot of work, but seeing kids’ faces when they pick their supplies makes it all worth it,” Grace admits. Recently, support from DonorsChoose, a platform that connects donors with classroom needs, helped the group reach more schools more efficiently. “I’ve learned you don’t have to be a certain age to make a difference,” Grace says. “My first-grade self would be amazed.” Now a high school freshman, Grace plans to expand the project statewide and hopes other states can follow. “Every kid deserves to feel prepared when they walk into school,” she says. “If a notebook and pencil can help, why wouldn’t we do everything we can to make that happen?” 24. What inspired Grace to collect school supplies? A. The wastefulness she noticed. B. A suggestion from her friend. C. A request from DonorsChoose. D. The need of low-income families. 25. What does Restoring Rainbows do with the collected supplies? A. It ships them statewide. B. It sells them to raise money. C. It stores them for the next year. D. It delivers them to students in need. 26. How does Grace like her work? A. Relaxing. B. Challenging. C. Rewarding. D. Disappointing. 27. What can we learn from the passage? A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Chances favor the prepared mind. C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Small seeds can grow into big trees. C For a decade, we’ve been told the blue light from our screens is ruining our sleep. The public fear about blue light started with a 2014 study. Half of the 12 participants read on an iPad before bed. The rest read physical books. The iPad users took longer to fall asleep, felt more tired the next day and produced less melatonin (褪黑素). So the study concluded that the screens were to blame. But Professor Zeitzer, an expert on behavioral science, says: “This was an incredibly misleading piece of work. The science is fine, but the conclusions aren’t. Blue light does affect sleep through melatonin, but screen light is too weak to matter.” Several studies found that the light from screens only delayed sleep by about nine minutes, at worst. So why are we so tired? Experts agree that what really matters is the amount of light you are getting through the day. The more light that you get during the daytime, the less impact the light in the evening has. So, for the best sleep, go outside in the morning. Even a cloudy day gives you around 10,000 lux, compared to 100 lux in your living room. And if you can get outside again after 15:00, that’s also surprisingly useful, because it further regulates your body clock and directly reduces how sensitive you are to light in the evening. Now, what about your phone? It tops out at 50-80 lux, which is hardly enough to matter, especially after you’ve had good daylight exposure. Therefore, as Zeitzer highlights, “it is much more the content rather than the light that is keeping people awake.” What you do on your phone — scrolling through social media, watching intense videos, or reading stressful news — engages your brain and makes it harder to wind down. So here’s the bottom line: Don’t keep thinking about your phone’s blue light or waste money on blue-blocking glasses. Instead, focus on getting plenty of natural daylight. And in the evening, pay attention to what you do before bed. Even simple routines like lowering the lights or reading a calm book can act as a psychological signal that tells your body it’s time to sleep. The real solution isn’t about the light from your screen — it’s about daylight and habits. 28. What is Professor Zeitzer’s attitude towards the finding of 2014 study? A. Disapproving. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Uninterested. 29. Why does the author mention the lux data? A. To show that phone light is too weak to affect sleep. B. To compare the brightness of different light sources. C. To prove that outdoor sunlight is harmful to sleep. D. To explain why sunlight regulates the body clock. 30. What can we learn from the passage? A. Light from a screen can significantly delay sleep. B. Simple routines can remind you to go to bed on time. C. More daylight makes you more sensitive to evening light. D. Blue light affects sleep more than the content on the phone. 31. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. How a Good Habit Contributes to Your Sleep B. How Your Screen Keeps You Awake at Night C. Why You Should Block Out Light for Better Sleep D. Why Phone Blue Light isn’t the Real Sleep Problem D For years, many ecologists have argued that as global warming worsens, nature should change more quickly. The logic seems simple. Rising temperatures and changing climate zones would force species out of some areas while opening new habitats elsewhere. This brings quicker local disappearance of species and rapid settlement. In theory, ecosystems should be rearranging at a fast pace. However, new research challenges that idea. After examining a large global database of living things, a team found the opposite trend (趋势). The rate at which species are replaced in local areas, known as “turnover”, has not increased. Instead, it has slowed significantly. The researchers concentrated on changes since the 1970s, when global surface temperatures began rising more rapidly and noticeably, and environmental changes became more pronounced. They compared species turnover rates before and after this period of faster warming. If climate change were the main driver, turnover should have increased. Instead, the analysis showed that over short periods of 1-5 years, turnover generally declined. This pattern appeared across a wide range of ecosystems, from birds to deep-sea life. To understand this unexpected result, the team looked beyond external climate forces and examined how ecosystems organize themselves internally. Their findings suggest that ecological communities are not simply reacting to temperature changes. Rather, they often operate in what is called the “Multiple Attractors” state, where species continually replace one another because of internal biological interactions. The process is like a game of rock-paper-scissors, where no single species rules for long. If these internal changes typically keep ecosystems active, why are turnover rates slowing? The researchers argue that environmental degradation (退化) and reduced regional species pools are likely responsible. As human activities damage living environments, types of living things are reduced. With fewer species available to move in, the pace of turnover declines. Dr. Nwankwo noted: “In research we are seeing clear indications that human impacts cause the slowing of turnover. It is worrying.” The findings suggest that balanced-looking ecosystems may not be healthy. A slowdown in local species change may signal that different living things are being lost at a larger scale, weakening the natural processes that normally keep ecosystems active. 32. What does the word “pronounced” underlined in Paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. Obvious. B. Sudden. C. Regular. D. Similar. 33. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4? A. More species will move in to balance the ecosystems. B. Human activities account for the drop of turnover rates. C. Climate serves as the main cause of slow ecosystem changes. D. Internal interactions can ensure the steady ecosystem turnover. 34. What is the passage mainly about? A. The key role of temperature in nature. B. A common biological rule of ecosystems. C. An unexpected ecological trend and its risks. D. The methods to improve the falling turnover rate. Many people believe that summer travel is destined to be expensive, crowded, and exhausting. In fact, the quality of a trip depends more on the way you travel than on the season itself. Destination matters the most. Many people choose popular tourist attractions, only to end up spending a lot of money while struggling through huge crowds. Why not turn to the places with better value for money? In this way, you can not only save money but also enjoy peace and quiet. ____35____ Dealing with hot weather is also very important. Summer travel naturally involves strong sunshine, but that does not mean you have to suffer through it helplessly. ____36____ For example, wearing breathable clothing and carrying portable fans can help a lot. If possible, arranging major outdoor activities in the cooler early morning or evening hours is also a smart choice. To travel light, you also need to pack light. ____37____ Make your trip easier by choosing a small roller bag instead of heavy checked luggage. Take only the essentials and wash clothes during your trip. Accommodation choices also matter. ____38____ Check the actual conditions of the room — for example, whether it has windows, a real bed, and a private bathroom. These details often determine how comfortable your trip will be. ____39____ With some careful planning on where to go, how to deal with the heat, and where to stay, anyone can turn it into a relaxing and enjoyable vacation. A. Summer travel is not necessarily a “painful journey.” B. Carrying too much luggage often becomes a burden. C. The location of your hotel is more important than the room itself. D. Many popular destinations offer cheaper tickets for students or seniors. E. Some simple yet effective protective measures can make a noticeable difference. F. In particular, you should stay cautious about places with unbelievably low prices. G. Avoiding the mindset that “popular means best” is a key step toward a better travel experience. After a wildfire destroyed over 6,000 structures in early 2025, artist Ruth Askren, 72, felt survivor’s guilt because her childhood home remained unruined. To help the homeless families, she began volunteering with Homes in Memoriam, a project where a collective of artists paint free home portraits for those who lost their houses. “For me, it was a matter of feeling really driven to do something,” Askren said. “I’m a painter. This is what I can do to help people cope with their loss in the smallest of ways.” After being paired with a family, Askren worked from a collection of old photographs to recreate their lost home, adding personal touches like the way tree branches cast shadows on a wall, or the light that from an upstairs window. For the Vaziri Family, she painted a yellow house with a sloping roof. “Painting this special house gave me a sense of how it was like a living thing,” she wrote on her social media. “I know it may just be my imagination, but the house truly seemed to have its own personality. It felt alive as if it could change and adapt to whatever its residents needed.” The project is emotional for the families who receive the paintings, but Askren said: “It is comforting for me, too, as the painting process has helped me work through the pain of losing so many homes.” Now, realizing that these homes will live on in the paintings created by loving hands, she accepts the sadness as part of the joy. 40. Why did Ruth Askren begin volunteering with Homes in Memoriam? _________________________________________________________________________________ 41. What did Askren gain from painting the Vaziri Family’s house? _________________________________________________________________________________ 42. Why Phone Blue Light isn’t the Real Sleep Problem 【答案】28. A 29. A 30. B 31. 根据原文第二段“But Professor Zeitzer, an expert on behavioral science, says: “This was an incredibly misleading piece of work. The science is fine, but the conclusions aren’t. Blue light does affect sleep through melatonin, but screen light is too weak to matter.”(但行为科学专家Zeitzer教授表示:“这项研究极具误导性。实验本身的科学流程没有问题,但得出的结论并不成立。蓝光确实会通过褪黑素影响睡眠,可屏幕发出的光线强度太低,根本不足以产生实质影响。”)”可知,Zeitzer教授不认可2014年那项研究的结论,持反对态度。 【29题详解】 推理判断题。根据原文第三段“Even a cloudy day gives you around 10,000 lux, compared to 100 lux in your living room.(就算阴天户外照度也有约一万勒克斯,而客厅只有一百勒克斯。)”及第四段“Now, what about your phone? It tops out at 50-80 lux, which is hardly enough to matter, especially after you’ve had good daylight exposure.(那手机呢?手机屏幕最高亮度仅50至80勒克斯,这点光线几乎不会造成什么影响,如果你白天充分接触过自然光就更是如此。)”可知,通过这组对比,作者想说明手机光线强度极低,几乎不足以对睡眠产生影响。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据原文最后一段“Even simple routines like lowering the lights or reading a calm book can act as a psychological signal that tells your body it’s time to sleep.(调暗灯光、读舒缓书籍这类简单日常流程能作为心理信号,提醒身体该入睡了。)” 根据原文第二段“But Professor Zeitzer, an expert on behavioral science, says: “This was an incredibly misleading piece of work. The science is fine, but the conclusions aren’t. Blue light does affect sleep through melatonin, but screen light is too weak to matter.”(但行为科学专家Zeitzer教授表示:“这项研究极具误导性。实验本身的科学流程没有问题,但得出的结论并不成立。蓝光确实会通过褪黑素影响睡眠,可屏幕发出的光线强度太低,根本不足以产生实质影响。”)”及全文内容可知,全文推翻大众普遍认知,论证手机蓝光并非影响睡眠的真正元凶,核心观点为真正干扰睡眠的是日间光照不足和手机内容,选项 D“为何手机蓝光并非睡眠问题的真正根源” 可以完整概括全文主旨,适合作标题。 D For years, many ecologists have argued that as global warming worsens, nature should change more quickly. A 33. B 34. 根据第三段中的“The researchers concentrated on changes since the 1970s, when global surface temperatures began rising more rapidly and noticeably, and environmental changes became more pronounced.(研究人员重点研究了20世纪70年代以来的变化,那时全球地表气温开始更快、更明显地上升,环境变化也变得更加pronounced。)” 根据第四段中的“The researchers argue that environmental degradation (退化) and reduced regional species pools are likely responsible. As human activities damage living environments, types of living things are reduced. With fewer species available to move in, the pace of turnover declines.(研究人员认为环境退化和区域物种库减少可能是罪魁祸首。随着人类活动破坏生存环境,生物的种类变少。可供迁入的物种更少,更替的速度下降。)”可知,人类活动造成的生态破坏,是物种更替率下降的根本原因。 【34题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“However, new research challenges that idea. After examining a large global database of living things, a team found the opposite trend (趋势). The rate at which species are replaced in local areas, known as “turnover”, has not increased. Instead, it has slowed significantly.(然而,一项新研究对这一观点提出了质疑。研究团队分析了庞大的全球生物数据库后,发现了截然相反的趋势。局部地区物种更替的速率,即所谓的“周转率”,并未上升,反而大幅放缓。)”以及尾段中的“A slowdown in local species change may signal that different living things are being lost at a larger scale, weakening the natural processes that normally keep ecosystems active.(局部物种变化的放缓可能预示着各类生物正在更大范围地消失,削弱了那些通常保持生态系统活跃的自然进程。)” Many people believe that summer travel is destined to be expensive, crowded, and exhausting. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. Since the project is emotional for the families who receive the paintings, Askren accepts the sadness as part of the happiness. _________________________________________________________________________________ 43. Apart from what the passage mentions, what other benefit(s) can art bring you? (In about 40 words) _________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】40. Because wildfire destroyed lots of buildings, she felt survivor’s guilt and wanted to help homeless families who lost their houses. 41. She felt the house was like a living thing with its own personality and it seemed alive to meet the family’s needs. 42. Since the project is emotional for the families who receive the paintings, Askren accepts the sadness as part of the happiness. Askren accepts sadness as joy because the lost homes can live on in paintings, not just because the project moves families. 43. Art helps me relax and release pressure when I feel upset. It lets me express inner feelings that I cannot speak out. Creating works also improves my observation and makes me more patient in daily life. 根据第一段“After a wildfire destroyed over 6,000 structures in early 2025, artist Ruth Askren, 72, felt survivor’s guilt because her childhood home remained unruined.
