固定句型be doing sth. when... 意为“正在做某事,这时突然……”,所以填连词when。
【28题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:从那天起,他为保护鲨鱼而奔走抗争。fight后接不定式to do表行动的目的,fight to protect sharks表示“为保护鲨鱼而抗争”。

In Mexico, the “Day of the Dead” (Día de los Muertos) is one of the most important holidays. Celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, it is a time for families to remember loved ones who have died. Unlike many other cultures, where death is a sad topic, Mexicans treat the Day of the Dead as a joyful celebration. They believe that during this time, the spirits of the dead return to the world of the living to be with their families.
To prepare for the holiday, families build special tables called ofrendas. These are covered with colourful cloth and decorated with flowers, candles, and photographs of the dead. Families also put the favourite foods and drinks of their loved ones on the ofrendas. A special kind of bread called pan de muerto (bread of the dead) is baked, and sugar skulls (骷髅) with the names of the dead written on them are made. All of these are meant to welcome the spirits back home.
Some traditions of the Day of the Dead go back more than 3,000 years, to the time of the Aztecs (阿兹特克人). The Aztecs believed that death was not the end, but a continuation of life in another form. When the Spanish arrived in Mexico in the 16th century, they brought their own traditions. Over time, the Aztec traditions mixed with Spanish Catholic customs to create the holiday we know today.
Although the Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition, it is now celebrated in many other countries too, including the United States, Spain, and the Philippines. In some places, it has become less about religious belief and more of a cultural celebration. However, for most Mexican families, it remains a deeply meaningful time to honour the memory of those who have passed away and to celebrate the cycle of life and death.

A. They treat it as a sad day for crying. B. They treat it as a joyful celebration.

Offer a seagull (海鸥) fresh fish and chips, and they’ll take the fish every time. UK researchers have discovered that, given a choice, seagulls prefer seafood to human-made options.
In fact, finds the study, even seagulls raised on bread and cat food will choose fish. “Our results suggest that, even when raised on an ‘urban’ diet of foods found only around people, these chicks might be unlikely to seek out urban foods as adults,” says lead author Emma Inzani, a PhD researcher at the Centre for Ecology and Conservation in the University of Exeter, UK. “Human- associated foods are often both reliably present and easy to obtain — but when fish is available they clearly prefer it.”
The team of seagull researchers has previously found that seagulls are more likely to want food that has been handled by people rather than left alone, but they’re less likely to steal from people who stare them down.
In this latest study,27 herring gulls (银鸥) were raised in captivity (圈养). The birds had all been rescued after falling off roofs in Cornwall, and were later freed. Half of the chicks had access to food that was 80% bread and cat food, and 20% fish and mussels (贻贝) . The other half of the chicks got the opposite spread.
At regular intervals every few days, the researchers presented the baby gulls with bowls of all four foods. and tracked what they chose. All of the birds consistently ate the fish, and very few of them ever tried the bread.
“Animals can live and explore urban areas for human food waste,” says senior author Dr. Neeltje Boogert. “However, this does not necessarily mean they’re thriving or that they prefer this food, rather than making the best of a bad situation,” adding, “More research is needed to investigate how the food young animals receive affects their later life, including their food choices, health and breeding.”
35. What do seagulls like best according to-UK researchers?
A. Cat foods. B. Plant seeds. C. Potato chips. D. Ocean creatures.
36. What can we infer about the herring gulls?
A. They were caught in the wild. B. They preferred mussels to fish.
C. They were released in the end. D. They stole food from people.
37. What will Dr. Neeltje Boogert probably agree with?
A. Animals in urban areas mainly feed on food waste.
B. Seagulls rely on food waste to go through difficulty.
C. It is clear how animals’ experience affects their life.
D. More proof is needed to show seagulls’ food choice.
38. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Seagulls’ Preference for Food B. New Living Habits of Seagulls
C. Seagulls’ Choices of Habitats D. Secrets of Seagulls’ Daily Diet
【答案】35. D 36. C 37. D 38. A

I grew up hearing, “Figure it out, but don’t look it up.” I use this advice when I’m tempted (诱惑) to turn to a search engine for answers. Should all of us limit our use of technology?
Nicholas Carr, the author of The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, says that we should take some time away from screens. “Deep thinking happens only when our minds are calm and attentive.” It is difficult to focus while we are using the Internet. People tend to look up a question and end up skimming (浏览) through unrelated information. Some people might not even notice when they start mindlessly clicking.
In “Cognitive Offloading: How the Internet Is Changing the Human Brain”, Philip Perry describes a test that compared two groups. One group couldn’t use any sort of device to answer questions. The other group was allowed to use Google. The group that had access to their smartphones immediately looked up answers on the Internet. The group without smartphones were quicker at answering questions because they didn’t reach for their smartphones. While it’s true that the Internet gives us answers quickly and reliably, we may forget that we can get the answers so easily.
David Price, a guest blogger on a website, says that teaching may be getting easier with Google because parents can now use the Internet to help with their kids’ homework. This led me to think about our schooldays. When my class had a math test, most of us used calculators (计算器) at every opportunity even though everyone in that room was able to solve each problem. The Internet is like that because we know the answers to many questions we search for. We have to at least attempt to use our minds for problem-solving so we don’t forget how to do so. If we always turn to technology for answers, we’ll never learn anything on our own.
I understand that the problems with technology are only when it is used in a certain way, but it’s not the solution to every problem. The positives of technology don’t remove the negatives. It’s time to take a step back from technology and take a break from our devices.

Sad music has been found highly effective in pain relief. A study published in the journal Frontiers in Pain Research discovered that listening to favorite songs can reduce people’s feeling of pain, especially those sad songs that tell bittersweet emotional experiences.
This small-scale study invited 63 young adults, each of whom selected two favorite songs: one they had loved for a long time and another they would take with them to a desert island. Participants (参与者) were also asked to choose one song from a set of songs that researchers believed could relax people but were unfamiliar to them. During the experiment, Participants were required to listen to music for 7 minutes while looking at a monitoring screen, while another group had a quiet rest. The results showed that compared to those who listened to unfamiliar comforting songs or did not listen to any songs, people who listened to their favorite songs reported less pain.
In addition to its effects on pain relief, sad music also has positive influences on the mind. Studies have shown that sad songs can bring emotional resonance (共鸣), providing a sense of psychological (心理的) comfort. Sad music often touches upon deep emotions within people, causing strong resonance during listening. This resonance not only helps reduce emotional pressure but also provides psychological support and comfort. This psychological effect may be related to the need for people to seek emotional support through music when facing difficulties and challenges in life. Through music, people can escape the difficulties of real life to a certain degree and find inner peace.
Despite the many positive effects of sad music, depending too much on it may bring some risks. For example, some people may feel empty or uncomfortable after listening to music. This feeling may be caused by their over-dependence on music. To avoid this situation, it is recommended that people keep a balance when using music for emotional management and seek other healthy ways to deal with stress and challenges in life.
43. What type of music was found most effective in pain relief?
A. Unfamiliar comforting songs. B. Favorite sad songs.
C. Any type of music. D. Famous rock music.
44. How did the researchers get the effects of sad music on pain relief?
A. By measuring the participants’ heart rates.
B. By requiring participants to listen to sad songs.
C. By observing the participants’ facial expressions.
D. By asking participants to report their pain levels.
45. How does sad music help people emotionally?
A. It makes them feel sad. B. It makes them feel energetic.
C. It helps them reduce stress. D. It helps them forget everything.
46. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. We should not seek other ways to reduce stress. B. We had better avoid sad music completely.
C. We are supposed to listen to familiar music. D. We should not depend on music too much.

39. What may happen when we’re using the Internet?
A. We will be in a good mood.
B. We will become less efficient.
C. We will find it hard to think deeply.
D. We will respond quickly to information.
40. What does the test in Paragraph 3 show?
A. People are easily tempted by the information on the Internet.
B. People don’t have to rely on the Internet all the time.
C. A limit to the spread of the Internet is necessary.
D. Webs can offer answers more reliably.
41. Why does the author mention his school math test?
A. To show different learning methods at different times.
B. To stress the importance of learning by ourselves.
C. To express his agreement to Price’s opinion.
D. To praise the development of technology.
42. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Is teaching becoming easier with parents’ help?
B. Is the Internet teaching people not to think?
C. How to use the Internet more wisely?
D. What does technology bring us?
