Jen Adams Beason, a 2nd-grade teacher from Louisiana, witnessed this when she asked her students to write about an invention that they didn’t like, or an invention that they wish would have never seen the light of day. Jen has 21 students, and she was absolutely heartbroken when she noticed that four of her students shared the same invention: the smartphone. With dozens of notifications (通知) from apps, emails, and social media updates, it could be hard not to look at your phone for longer than five minutes. Jen shared a boy’s essay on her Facebook page. “I hate my mom’s phone and I wish she never had one. That is an invention that I don’t like.” The essay is even accompanied by a sad and angry face saying “I hate it,” looking at a drawn phone with a cross through it. “I had my 2nd graders write about an invention that they wish had never been created. Out of 21 students, 4 of them wrote about this topic. # getoffyourphone # listentoyourkids,” Jen posted on her Facebook wall. Her message was seen by millions and even shared 300,000 times. It received dozens of eye-opening comments. “That is so sad. Great reminder for us all to put those phones down and engage with our kids more,” Tracy Jenkins posted. Luckily, it seems that awareness about smartphone addiction is increasing. Both iPhones and smartphones running on a recent Android operating system will soon include features to monitor, control and restrict your personal smartphone use for your own health. Still, it’s interesting to see that parents’ concerns about their children becoming addicted to smartphones and other smart devices, are also perfectly true the other way around. 24. What did Jen find through the writing task? A. Parents’ overuse of their phones. B. Parents’ dislike for their children. C. Children’s resistance to social media. D. Children’s poor performance in writing. 25. The boy included a picture in his essay to show _________. A. his great drawing skills B. his desire for a smartphone C. his strong negative emotions D. his insight into online interaction 26. How did Tracy Jenkins feel after reading Jen’s post? A. Guilty. B. Helpless. C. Embarrassed. D. Confused. 27. What is the author trying to do in the last paragraph? A. Draw a conclusion. B. Provide evidence. C. Put forward a proposal. D. Call for reflection. C Research from King’s College London has shown that visiting an art gallery and looking at artwork can lower stress and may even improve your body’s natural defences. To explore the physical effects of viewing art, scientists invited 50 UK volunteers between 18 and 40 years old to take part. They were split into two groups. One group saw original masterpieces by artists such as Van Gogh and Gauguin in the Courtauld Gallery. The other group saw high-quality printed copies of the same paintings in a laboratory setting. Before and after looking at the art, each person gave a saliva (唾液) sample. During the 20-minute session, they also wore research watches that tracked their heart rate and skin temperature. The findings were striking. For those viewing real art in the gallery, levels of the stress hormones (荷尔蒙) levels fell by 22%. In contrast, the lab group’s levels only dropped by 8%. Additionally, some chemicals in the body that rise with stress and can harm long-term health decreased significantly among gallery visitors — by about 30% and 28% for the two key types measured. There was almost no change in the lab group. This indicates that experiencing original art in person can calm the body’s stress systems more effectively. “From a scientific perspective, the most exciting part is that art positively influenced three body systems at once: immunity (免疫力), hormones, and the nervous system,” said Dr. Tony Woods, the study’s lead author. “This is a unique result that truly surprised us.” Although there is a long history that art has always been connected to feeling better emotionally, this study now offers solid evidence that it benefits physical health too. So if you’re looking for a healthy and relaxing activity this weekend, you might want to plan a trip to your local art museum. 28. Why did researchers set up two different viewing environments? A. To attract more public attention. B. To identify which art style is more relaxing. C. To see if the setting changes art’s physical effect. D. To compare the popularity of originals and copies. 29. What do the numbers 22% and 8% primarily indicate? A. The stress reduction in different settings. B. The improvement in art appreciation skills. C. The time spent viewing different artworks. D. The age difference between the two groups. 30. What surprised the researchers most according to Dr. Tony Woods? A. The volunteers’ strong interest in classic art. B. The immediate drop in the volunteers’ heart rates. C. The big difference between gallery and lab results. D. The impact of art on multiple body systems. 31. What does the last paragraph focus on? A. The general history of art therapy. B. The potential limitations of the study. C. A comparison of emotional problems. D. A practical application of the finding. D For twenty years, the internet has been my second home while communicating science. Recently, I came across an image: a crying Earth surrounded by fallen trees, declaring, “No intelligent species would destroy their own home.” This image troubled me deeply. I refuse to let my eight-year-old son believe humans are stupid or evil — because it’s obviously untrue. But I often find myself quite lonely. I’m wondering if, perhaps, there are other folks out there who feel the same as I do. We didn’t cause climate change through being stupid, but through being extremely smart. Our ancestors burned coal to solve urgent problems: growing more food, heating and lighting homes. We want to provide a good life for ourselves and our children. The results have been astonishing. In the U.S. in 1895 one quarter of people died before age five. Today it’s under 1 percent, and we will keep pushing until it hits zero. Imagine the essays Ben Franklin or Mark Twain would write about this level of advancement. How would they keep tears from their eyes if they saw what we’ve achieved? So much of that achievement has been based on the fossil fuels we’ve burned to generate it, whether coal, natural gas or oil. We’ve learned that this harms both the environment and people, and to our credit we aren’t always bad at addressing this. It was not long ago that London cleaned its smoke-blackened air. When rain becomes acidic, the world changes its policies. When harms are done locally, we tend to be pretty good at cleaning things up. Here’s where I feel hope: we have already done this, and we know it is possible. I don’t want my son growing up thinking that his species is in some way evil. I want him thinking humans are problem solvers, and whatever strategies we take to fix global warming will create more new problems, too. This is a pretty normal story for intelligent species. 32. How did the author feel seeing the picture online? A. Disturbed. B. Ashamed. C. Frightened. D. Confused. 33. What is implied by mentioning Ben Franklin and Mark Twain? A. The warning of the warming Earth. B. The progress in social development. C. The praise for human modesty. D. The demand for greener energy. 34. Why does the author feel hopeful about humans? A. We will make more policies. B. We have discovered more fossil fuels. C. We highly value the role of the earth. D. We can restore damage to the environment. 35. What does the underlined word “story” refer to in the last paragraph? A. The cycle of causing and tackling problems. B. The ability to create a bright future. C. The evil nature of human beings. D. The positive attitude to life. For years, I kept a careful distance from the people around me. She held a candle and mentioned that a few residents were gathering in the hallway and invited me to join them. I hesitated. Staying alone felt safe, but something felt unsettled. ____38____ People sat on the floor, sharing blankets, tea, and quiet conversation. I listened more than I spoke. The man I had once assumed was unfriendly turned out to be a retired doctor with a dry sense of humour. ____39____ I realized how easily distance can turn into detachment (疏离). When the lights finally returned, the hallway looked the same, but it felt different. I didn’t suddenly become outgoing, nor did I abandon my need for space. ____40____ It’s about knowing when to let them in. Now, when I step into the elevator, I don’t automatically lower my eyes. Sometimes, I look up. A. After a moment, I stepped outside. B. I avoided eye contact and unnecessary conversation. C. I began to question my decision to join the conversation. D. Some kids ran back and forth shouting loudly, while others rode scooters (滑板车) fast down the sidewalk, nearly bumping into passersby — several even cut through neighbours’ front yards, destroying flowers in the neat gardens. He signed softly and turned back inside, his eyes falling on the cover of a dog-eared book — a gift from Grandma. A wave of warmth swept over him. He’d once been too restless to sit down. It was Grandma that had turned his dislike of reading into passion. Those boring afternoons were turned into adventures because Grandma always had a way to make reading feel like treasure hunts. With newfound passion, he stepped into a wonderland through those pages. Suddenly, he was drugged back to reality from his sweet memories by the yelling from a neighbour, “Ruined my garden again? Can’t you kids read some books?” An idea popped into Todd’s mind. Why not build a small book box right in his front yard? Wasn’t this a perfect way to change the messy community around him? Without hesitation, he crafted the box from old wooden pieces, carved a tiny shelf inside and put in his favourite children’s books, including the gift from Grandma. For the sign on the box, he painted “Reading Comer for Kids”. He placed the box right under the big oak tree where the kids dashed past every single day. Yet the box sat lonely for days. Kids still rushed past, never sparing a glance. The neighborhood didn’t shift one bit. Feeling defeated, Todd walked out to the box and picked up a book. As he opened it, a small, faded sticker slipped out from the pages, landing on the grass. It was the shiny star he had been hunting for — one of the “secret treasures” Grandma used to hide for him to find. Recalling Grandma’s tricks, Todd knew what he could do. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With more kids drawn to the magic of stories, the community changed. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 保密★启用前 2025级高一 (下) 期末测试 英语 科 注意事项: 1. 6. It is my honor to introduce Tang poetry as one of the most profound treasures of Chinese culture. The beauty of Tang poetry lies not only in its elegant rhythm and concise language but also in its ability to convey deep emotions and universal human experiences in just a few lines. Through poetry, you may sense the Chinese appreciation for nature, friendship, and the transience of life. For example, the well-known poet Li Bai wrote, “Raise my cup, I invite the moon; with my shadow, we are three.” This line reflects a blend of loneliness, imagination, and harmony with nature—an essence often found in the Chinese worldview. I believe that exploring Tang poetry will offer you meaningful insight into the values and spirit that have shaped China for centuries. Thank you. Dear friends, On behalf of our school, I extend a warm welcome to you all. It is my honor to introduce traditional Chinese painting as a profound expression of our cultural heritage. What I wish to share with you is its distinctive philosophy. While much of Western art pursues visual realism, Chinese painting seeks to express the inner spirit and essential nature of its subject—be it a landscape, a flower, or a bird. Its beauty emerges not only from the expressive brushwork and the symbolic use of empty space, but also from the integration of poetry, calligraphy, and painting into a unified artistic whole. Take, for example, a classic Chinese landscape: you do not merely view a scene, but rather sense the artist’s tranquil mind and philosophical desire to harmonize with nature. Thus, Chinese painting is more than visual art—it is a form of quiet contemplation, offering a window into a worldview that values harmony, subtlety, and spiritual connection above all. Thank you. Recalling Grandma’s tricks, Todd knew what he could do. He hunted through his old books, hiding small stickers, colorful paper clips and tiny toy figures as “secret treasures” between the pages, just like Grandma used to do. He also added a note on the box: “Find the hidden treasures in books!” The next morning, he waited quietly by the window. A boy riding a scooter slowed down, curious about the note. He stopped, opened a book and let out a happy shout when he found a star sticker. With more kids drawn to the magic of stories, the community changed. The noisy shouts and scooter sounds faded, replaced by soft reading voices under the oak tree. Kids no longer ran wildly or destroyed gardens; instead, they sat together, sharing interesting plots from the books. Neighbours smiled when they saw the quiet reading corner, some even bringing their own old books to add to the box. Todd looked at the lively scene, holding Grandma’s book tightly. He knew Grandma would be proud — his small idea had turned the messy neighborhood into a warm, joyful place filled with the charm of stories. mom's birthday is next week.
