Jake’s thick beard and rough, worn jacket made passers-by step aside nervously on the street. I worked at a community shelter that winter, and on my first day, I thought to myself: Jake looked more like someone you would avoid than a warm-hearted volunteer.
One cold winter evening, a heavy snow fell suddenly. A little girl slipped on the icy road and was soon trapped by the freezing wind and thick snow. Her grandmother stood nearby, too weak to move and shouted for help in despair. Before anyone else could react, Jake rushed forward at once. He walked against the cold wind and struggled through the deep snow to reach the girl. Then he held her tightly and walked slowly back step by step to stay away from the slippery ice. I stood in the distance, too shocked to act. In just several minutes, he brought the little girl safely back to her grandma.
The old lady, still weak but now holding her granddaughter tightly, turned away quietly and slowly disappeared into the snowy night. No warm thanks, no gentle smile — only their lonely figures fading into the night. I thought Jake would feel upset or complain about the cold reaction. However, he just brushed off the snow on his clothes and continued to help clear icy roads for other people.
Later, I talked with him about that cold reception. He smiled softly, with cold wind still touching his face. “Kindness needs no praise. Actions speak louder than words.” He added, “The old lady was too frightened and cold at that moment. Stress always makes people ignore politeness.”
That day I wrote in my diary: True kindness is often unnoticed, for it never comes with a perfect look we expect. Jake only volunteered with no extra reward, but his deeds showed his true inner beauty.
Years later, every time I am about to judge others by their looks, I will recall Jake’s plain appearance and the little girl saved on that snowy night. I have kept reminding myself not to let prejudice blind the truth deep in one’s heart.
4. What first impression did Jake leave on the author?
A. He was gentle and easy-going.
B. He appeared funny and talkative.
C. He was hard-working and helpful.
D. He looked unfriendly and hard to get close to.

A. To show his strong willpower. B. To rescue the trapped little girl.
C. To win respect from passers-by. D. To finish his voluntary work earlier.
6. What lesson did the author learn from the experience?
A. Bad weather may cause hidden dangers.
B. People should always be polite to volunteers.
C. We should never judge a person by appearance.
D. Inner beauty is less important than fine physical looks.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Power of Stress B. A Lonely Grandmother
C. A Terrible Snowy Night D. The Unthanked Volunteer
C
Did you know that the sun has weather? The sun’s weather, called space weather, can affect the entire solar system. The sun is continuously blowing a stream of tiny particles (颗粒) in all directions, called the solar wind, which is mostly made up of hydrogen (氢). It blows at hundreds of kilometres per second and has been blowing onto the Earth for billions of years.
But why hasn’t it crashed into us? Actually, the Earth has a magnetic field (磁场), which causes the planet to act like a giant magnet in space and protects the Earth from the solar wind. The Earth’s magnetic field is what causes a compass to work. The magnetic field can’t be seen, but we can measure it with magnets and other scientific instruments.
The particles that make up the solar wind are made to change direction by the Earth’s magnetic field, so they mostly pass around the Earth without crashing into us. But it’s not an immaculate protection -- because of the shape of the Earth’s magnetic field, close to the North and South Poles, a little bit of the solar wind can sometimes get through and crash directly into the atmosphere.
This crash happens between very tiny particles at an incredible speed. Therefore, instead of throwing off smaller pieces or exploding, the particles give off light, causing polar lights. The colors of the light tell us what type of atmospheric particle is being crashed into by the solar wind. For example, red and green are from oxygen.
What the polar lights, also known as auroras, exactly look like depends on the state of the Earth’s magnetic field and the atmosphere, but more directly depends on space weather. Sometimes the sun produces a storm, which typically will cause an impressive view of auroras only for people who live in the far north and south of the world, underneath the part of the Earth’s magnetic field that can let the solar wind through. But sometimes, a really powerful storm can cause the auroras to be visible in some other places as well.
8. What is mentioned about the magnetic field?
A. It can be measured by a compass.
B. It saves the Earth from external hits.
C. It attracts the solar wind to the Earth.
D. It can be seen with scientific instruments.
9. What does the underlined word “immaculate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Perfect. B. Common. C. Impressive. D. Changeable.
10. Which element directly decides different colors of auroras?
A. The speed of the solar wind.
B. The changing space weather around the sun.
C. Varieties of atmospheric particles hit by solar wind.
D. The overall shape of Earth’s global magnetic field.
11. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A. Powerful storms happen frequently on the sun.
B. Space weather may widen the Earth’s magnetic field.
C. Solar winds’ force plays a role in auroras’ visible range.
D. Auroras’ appearance relies mostly on the Earth’s atmosphere.
D
China is speeding up efforts to modernize its traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) industry, including applying artificial intelligence (AI) to better R&D (research and development) and increase access to quality TCM services, as policymakers seek to change the centuries-old industry into a technology-driven one with stronger global reach.
According to the 2026 Government Work Report, the government stressed the significance of applying modern technology to TCM development and strengthening the mix (混合体) of Chinese and western medical practices. The push forms part of a broader modernization (现代化) strategy, which was issued earlier this year by eight government departments.
“AI models can connect data across the entire industrial chain,” said Xiao Wei, an expert at the Chinese Academy of Engineering. “Such digital tools could help solve long-standing challenges in the TCM industry, including product standardization (标准化) and quality stability (稳定性),” he added.
AI is already being applied across different stages of the industry. Shijiazhuang Yiling Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., for example, said AI-driven research projects have shortened drug research and development cycles by about 30 percent.
China is also seeking to expand the global reach of TCM products and services. As of July 2025, TCM was practiced in 196 countries and regions, and China’s exports (出口) of TCM products reached $5.09 billion in 2025, customs data showed.
Despite the modernization push, researchers say the industry still faces structural challenges, which continue to limit broader global acceptance. “The next five years will be a key period for the development of China’s TCM industry,” Guo Lanping, head of Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, said in an interview with Xinhua News Agency. “With the implementation (执行) of the policy measures, the industry is expected to move further toward higher quality and greater modernization,” she added.
12. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?
A. By asking a question.
B. By giving an example.
C. By presenting China’s goal.
D. By comparing opinions.
13. What is the main idea of paragraph 3 and paragraph 4?
A. AI increases TCM sales.
B. AI advances TCM.
C. TCM faces challenges.
D. TCM needs standards.
14. What can be inferred about the TCM industry from the last paragraph?
A. Its exports have stopped growing.
B. It has no more challenges to face.
C. It still needs to improve quality standards.
D. It has achieved full global acceptance.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To discuss the challenges TCM faces.
B. To introduce AI-driven TCM modernization.
C. To argue against using technology in TCM.
D. To explain the long history of Chinese medicine.

第四部分 写作(共一节,满分15分)
【71题答案】
【答案】Dear students,
To build a green campus, I’m writing to call on everyone to live a low-carbon life.
Now resource waste is common around us. Lights stay on in empty classrooms, tap water runs continuously and many half-used notebooks are thrown away. Such behavior does great harm to our environment.
Here are my suggestions. First, turn off lights and taps when leaving. Second, use both sides of paper and reuse bottles. Besides, choose walking or cycling instead of taking cars to school. Small efforts will make a big difference. Let’s take action right now.
Yours,
Li Hua
