The very word invites discomfort. Its effects—shortness of breath, a pounding heart, and muscle tension—are deeply upsetting. But, as a clinician, I find that we tend to miss out on many valuable opportunities presented by this human emotion. In and of itself, anxiety is not deadly, nor is it a disease. Quite the contrary, it is an indicator of brain and sensory health. Once we accept that it is a normal, though uncomfortable, part of life, we can use it to help us. We all know working out at the gym is hard. By nature, a “good workout” is uncomfortable, since it involves pushing our physical limits beyond what we can easily do. The sweet spot of exercise is always a somewhat challenging experience. Similarly, if you want to be emotionally stronger, you need to face some tension. For example, one effective treatment for fear is an exposure therapy(疗法), which involves gradually encountering things that make one anxious, reducing fear over time. Humans are social creatures. When my patients learn to open up to their partners about their anxieties, they almost always report a greater sense of emotional closeness. Also, as international relationship expert Sue Johnson teaches, when we express our need for connection during challenging moments (e.g., “I'm having a hard time right now and could really use your support.”), it creates a greater connection and turns our anxiety into love. From time to time, we find ourselves at the end of our rope. Our responsibilities pile up, our resources break down, and we feel uncomfortably anxious—what we're experiencing is called stress. Simply put, the demands placed upon us outweigh our available resources, just like a set of scales(天平) going out of balance. Focusing on work and pretending that everything is OK can only lead to disastrous results. Medical treatment for stress may function for a while, but it tends to make things worse in the long run. The only solution to deal with stress is to do the mathematics to balance the scales. 1.What does the author say about anxiety? A.It is an invitation to diseases. B.It indicates stable mental health. C.It costs us many valuable chances. D.It is a natural emotional expression. 2.Why is “good workout” mentioned in paragraph 2? A.To prove how exercise influences emotions. B.To explain how anxiety builds emotional strength. C.To suggest an effective way to challenge physical limits. D.To show a positive connection between the mind and body. 3.According to paragraph 3, how can we improve relationships? A.By sharing anxieties. B.By expressing needs. C.By helping each other. D.By keeping in touch. 4.What can we learn from the last paragraph? A.Devoting more energy to work will pay off. B.Taking medicine can do the trick permanently. C.Increasing resources available can handle pressure. D.Mastering advanced mathematical skills is necessary. D “When my husband does the dishes, he always leaves some plates in the sink, some surface unwiped. I tried to correct the behavior until I remembered that if I finish everything in my Work in Progress folder I'm afraid I'll die,” Sarah Manguso once said. Yet the truth is that completion recharges energy, rather than using it up. Perfectionists love to begin new projects, because as long as they haven't done any work on a project, it's possible to believe that the end result might match the ideal in their mind. By contrast, finishing things means struggling their way through the messy, imperfect reality. Social psychologists describe what's going on here with “construal level theory”, which refers to the way we envision objects and events from different mental altitudes. For example, when considering how to spend your next summer holiday, you're likely to picture it from 30,000 feet—“going to the beach”, or “hiking in the mountains”. But when it nears, you start focusing on details like which beach, or mountain trails. Similarly, any major undertaking starts as outlines, smooth; only when digging in do you face imperfections and then mistakenly assume that a new project might be free of them. And yet, in reality, repeatedly starting but rarely finishing things is a recipe for suffering. People think finishing things “would exhaust even more of their energy and they get tired just thinking about it”, Steve Chandler writes. They don't see “that leaving things unfinished is what's causing the low levels of energy”. The trick to finishing things is simply to redefine what counts as finished. Instead of viewing a project's completion as only occasional, after days or weeks of work, think of your days as sequential(连续的) small “deliverables.” Each ending provides an energy-boost for the next. “Work is done, then forgotten,” says the Tao Te Ching(《道德经》), “Therefore it lasts forever.” You're no longer fighting the current, but letting it carry you forward. 5.According to paragraph 2, perfectionists ________. A.see a job through its end B.tend to start new projects repeatedly C.focus not on the result but on the process D.solve problems efficiently without much effort 6.Which is the best understanding of “construal level theory”? A.Early plan simplifies tasks. B.Unfinished work exhausts energy. C.Abstract goals are less motivating. D.Judgement shifts with mental distance. 7.What does the underlined word “deliverables” in paragraph 5 probably refer to? A.Tracking tools. B.Valuable parcels. C.Finished tasks. D.Demanding projects. 8.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.The Truth of Completion B.The Power of Imperfection C.A Guide to Starting Projects D.Perfectionism in Daily Work Ⅱ.完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) When I was 19, I was in a really bad car accident. She was very short, with short brown hair and a pair of distinctive eyeglasses that seemed too small for her tiny face. Despite being old enough to retire, her temper made it clear that she wasn't planning to do so quietly. Nelson Brian felt exhausted as he sat in one of the hard-backed chairs in the room, worn down by Ms.Finch's intense stare. Ms.Finch sat on the edge of her chair, her brown shoes barely touching the worn carpet. In a rude tone, she remarked, “Mr.Nelson, your file says you've been to four job interviews in the last ten days, but you haven't managed to secure a job. If today's appearance is any indication of your commitment to your job search, it's no wonder Flowers on First didn't want to hire you as a delivery driver.” A wave of sickness accompanied the heat spreading through Brian's body. He knew going straight from soccer practice to the career consulting session was a mistake, but he thought showing up in non-slip shoes would be better than being late. As he tried to explain, Ms.Finch pressed her lips together in annoyance. “I'm not interested in excuses, Mr.Nelson,” she said. “But I'd like to know why someone with your grade point average and an extensive list of after-school activities is struggling to find a part-time job.” Brian commitment to extracurricular(工作之外的) activities and good academic standing shifted Ms.Finch's perspective; she realized he possessed qualities that could contribute positively to the workplace. Ms.Finch's question brought back the helpless feeling that plagued(折磨) Brian during his failed interviews. “I-I-I am too nervous to say a word,” he stammered(结结巴巴地说), keeping his eyes on the carpet. Brian's openness in explaining himself and admitting he was nervous made Ms.Finch understand him better. Waiting for her blame, Brian was surprised when Ms.Finch shook her head.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Brian explained his choice of shoes and shorts, and Ms.Finch nodded understandingly._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 组合练二 做人与做事(2) Ⅰ. 根据第一段中“In and of itself... we can use it to help us.” 根据第二段中“By nature, a ‘good workout’ is uncomfortable... you need to face some tension.” 根据第三段中“When my patients learn to open up to their partners about their anxieties, they almost always report a greater sense of emotional closeness.” 根据最后一段中“Simply put, the demands... to balance the scales.” 根据第二段中“Perfectionists love to begin new projects... the ideal in their mind.” 根据第三段“Social psychologists describe what's going on... which beach, or mountain trails.” 根据画线词前“The trick to finishing things is simply to redefine what counts as finished. Instead of viewing a project's completion as only occasional...”及画线词后“Each ending provides an energy-boost for the next.” 通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Yet the truth is that completion recharges energy, rather than using it up.” 故The Truth of Completion适合作文章标题。 Ⅱ. Ⅲ. One possible version: Waiting for her blame, Brian was surprised when Ms.Finch shook her head. Ms.Finch made a quick note on her clipboard. She looked at him curiously, her voice softening. “I'm not so different from you, Brian. I, too, get nervous easily in stressful situations. I apologize for being rude about your situation.” Then, showing sympathy, Ms.Finch acknowledged Brian's genuine effort and commitment to the job search, despite his initial appearance. Brian explained his choice of shoes and shorts, and Ms.Finch nodded understandingly. “Being on time is crucial, Brian, and I commend you for that. But may I suggest keeping alternative clothing on hand for such occasions? Excellent. Now, let's get to work.” Ms.Finch offered encouraging words as they discussed his interview techniques and potential areas of improvement. She emphasized the importance of confidence and the impact of personal presentation during job interviews. Brian felt relieved and grateful for her advice. He realized that his own initial failure wasn't due to a lack of capability, but because he hadn't yet learned to present his best self professionally.
