At a very young age, I witnessed how tough life could be because of poverty. When I was three, my parents discovered my talent for art. By five, my skills had improved significantly after I received a sponsorship from UNICEF. That was my first big moment, when I realized that my creativity could help shape my future.
Despite my passion for art, I couldn't afford to pursue my dream of becoming an architect or working in advertising or animation. Instead, I chose a more practical path and studied Business Administration with a focus on Marketing at a well-known public university in Manila. After graduation, I took short courses in graphic design while working to support myself.
At 28, armed with experience and determination but without capital, I started a small marketing agency. I had to do everything myself, handling projects and working as a consultant. Competing with bigger agencies was extremely challenging, and after a few years, I had to close my agency and work full-time in marketing for an IT company.
I worked extremely hard in my marketing job, making sure everything was perfect. My hard work paid off, and I got a lot of respect. But after four years, I lost my job. Though I was frustrated, I recalled a piece of advice: Trust that things will work out in the end. I decided to turn this setback(挫折) into an opportunity.
Losing my job wasn't the end; it was actually a new start. I used the money from my job loss to finish my MBA and even got to study abroad as an exchange student. Later, I decided to restart my marketing agency.
As my agency grew, we were bought by an Australian company. This gave me a chance to expand my network and learn new skills. I also managed to build a private resort(度假胜地) near Manila and later opened a second one an hour's drive away. I hadn't just survived—I had regained my strength and confidence.
4.Why did the author choose a major unrelated to initial interest?
A.Financial restrictions narrowed options.

D.Market demand favored business studies.
5.How did the author strategically respond to professional setbacks?
A.He began making art for work.
B.He immediately restarted his business.
C.He enhanced skills through further education.
D.He relocated overseas for new opportunities.
6.What happened to the author's marketing agency after it was relaunched?
A.It was acquired by a foreign firm.
B.It adopted a new business model.
C.It partnered with a local resort.
D.It shifted focus to a new market.
7.What does the author's experience illustrate?
A.The pursuit of passion guarantees long-term success.
B.Life's barriers can create unexpected opportunities.
C.Overcoming hardship requires a practical approach to goals.
D.Success is driven by a balance of creativity and practicality.
Ⅱ.七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Here are the don'ts and do's of showing your support for your friends when they're having a hard time.
__8__. There are two problematic kinds of helpers: enthusiasts and fretters. Enthusiasts tend to push their advice, insisting on fixing or overcoming the problem. Fretters are so worried about their friends' challenges that they constantly question whether they are doing enough to help. Try to keep those behaviors in check. No one should have to manage you when they're going through a tragedy.
Don't minimize the pain and stay away from statistics. For example, if a friend failed the college exam, don't tell him that 70% of students end in failure. Remember that it doesn't mean less pain just because it happens to a lot of people. __9__.
Keep the focus on your friends. When your friends are talking to you, it's easy for you to share a similar story in an effort to relate and connect. But it's not always welcome. They might feel that you've made their pain about you. __10__, let them know that you went through something similar but allow them to decide if they want to hear about it at the moment.
Showing up isn't a one-time thing. Remember that grief(悲伤) is so complex and your friends might go through several stages of sorrow. __11__. It means a lot if your friends know that you are thinking about them all the time.
Ask your friends how you can best help. __12__. Just ask!
A.Don't let them stay alone
B.Try not to be over-enthusiastic or over-worried
C.Keep in touch with them and see if they need your support
D.If you do feel that your experience might be helpful to them
E.You don't need to automatically know what kind of help they want
F.Instead, feel with your friend the bigness of what they're going through
G.When there isn't a perfect response that is going to make people feel better
