Amsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museums, cycling culture and so on. It is the capital city of the Netherlands and often referred to as the “Venice of the North” because of its expansive system of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.
Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You’ll also want to check out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit there are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum.
If You Have Time
There are several other unique districts in Amsterdam, and you should try to explore as many of them as time allows. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a center for celebrity spotting and nightlife today. The Plantage area has most of the city’s museums and the botanical gardens.
Money Saving Tips
●Unless you really want to see the tulips(郁金香) blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.
●Look for accommodations in Amsterdam’s South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.
●Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.
●Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They’re inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.
Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book.

“I want to work full-time in China, honey.” An overseas call awakened the wife from sound sleep. “Why?” asked the wife with surprise, in a drowsy (昏昏欲睡的) voice, from the other side of the ocean.
In the United States, he had a great future ahead. At the age of 36, he became the youngest professor in the history of the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University, for his academic achievements. At 40, he became a tenured (终身的) chair professor at Princeton.
When everything seemed perfect and admirable to others, he firmly decided to say goodbye to Princeton University, to an affluent life in the United States, and return to China.
The news spread explosively. Many expressed confusion, many persuaded him, many made fun of him, and still many waited to have a good laugh at him.
He said patriotism is the plainest feeling of a person. Who doesn’t love his motherland, after all? In his heart, the American dream is already something past; the Chinese dream is rising.
After returning to China, he devoted all his energy, worked like crazy, and determined to do something big. He formed a life science research team. Every day, he works 12 to 16 hours at his laboratory. He is Shi Yigong, nicknamed “Da Niu” (someone with extraordinary achievements) by Tsinghua students. His given name, Yigong, comes from an idiom that means “devoted to public interest whole-heartedly”. “So far as I’m concerned, awards are of no special meaning.” Shi says calmly.
In his 18 years of study in the United States, he never forgot his Chinese dream. In the next 18 years, the Chinese dream will be more beautiful and greater by the efforts of Shi Yigong and the likes of him.
24. Why was Shi determined to return to China?
A. To serve his motherland. B. To reunite with his wife.
C. To live a quieter life. D. To make more money.
25. What does the underlined word “affluent” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Normal. B. Miserable. C. Wealthy. D. Adventurous.
26. What can we know about Shi Yigong?
A. His decision was well-received. B. He doesn’t care much about fame.
C. He is the youngest professor in history. D. His Chinese dream will be realized in 18 years.
27. Why is Shi Yigong called “Da Niu” by his Tsinghua students?
A. To support his life science research. B. To praise his honesty.
C. To introduce his endless energy in work. D. To show his unusual achievements.

While the rest of the country’s schools were struggling with math, student performance in Piedmont, a rural Alabama school district, improved obviously.
Piedmont, a 1,100-student district where seven out of 10 come from poor families, changed its teaching method five years ago: Teachers used test scores to see where their students were struggling and then they tried to help each kid focus on specific skills.
“Once we made that decision and allowed our teachers time to dig into the data, it paid off,” said Mike Hayes, the head teacher.
Piedmont students ranked (排名) 35th in the state in math in 2017. By spring 2022, the district ranked 12th in the state on math, with 57% of students reaching proficiency (娴熟). Statewide, 30% of students scored proficient in math.
To encourage teachers to dig deeper into student data, the Piedmont system made the school day longer and freed up time every four weeks for “data days”, when educators got together to study the testing results and decide how to divide the students into small groups for focused instruction.
“Research supports the use of tests to help teachers figure out which students need personalized help,” said Rebecca Dreyfus, an expert helping schools improve student learning. “Focused instruction for small groups of students also has years of research and evidence to back it up.”
At first, when Piedmont decided to introduce the small group instruction, teachers said they didn’t have enough time in a regular class to do it well. So the district lengthened math classes to 80 minutes every day in the middle school and 120 minutes each day in the elementary school.
“The longer math classes made a big difference,” teacher Landon Pruitt said. “In a 45-minute class, it is impossible to teach in small groups and get through the contents that we are required to cover.”
28. Why are the data used in paragraph 4?
A. To describe a phenomenon in the US.
B. To show the effect of the teaching method.
C. To tell the students’ family background.
D. To explain the state-wide math performances.
29. What does the testing aim to do in Piedmont?
A. Get money from students. B. Force teachers to work harder.
C. Choose the best students. D. Guide personalized instructions.
30. What does Rebecca Dreyfus suggest about the tests?
A. They are waste of time. B. They need further research.
C. They can be very helpful. D. They cost too much money.
31. What has made small group instructions possible in Piedmont?
A. Lengthened class time. B. Smaller class size. C. Less teaching contents. D. Additional teachers.
D
Coolness is not a widely studied subject. Past research has found that coolness is usually considered something positive: Cool people enjoy taking risks and doing extreme things and they are usually fashionable and attractive.
But Dr. Warren and his team want to know what makes a person “good” rather than just “cool”. So they asked the participants in an experiment to think about the people they considered good or cool. Then they were asked to match each person with 15 different qualities.
“We found that the good and cool people do share some qualities. For example, those who appear agreeable are equally considered cool and good,” Dr. Warren said. “But, across the board, the qualities that are usually related to kindness or helpfulness are more often associated with good people instead of cool ones. Compared with cool ones, good people seem to be warmer, more helpful and traditional. They usually work harder and see everyone and everything as being equal or equally worthy of care and respect.”
Their finding further suggests that the drive to be cool is particularly strong during teenage, and it influences not only what people buy or whom they admire but also how they talk and what they do for fun.
So is coolness a quality that’s worth dreaming of?
“I have serious doubts,” Dr. Warren said. “Sure, cool kids get more attention in school, but many of them who continue behaving in this way in adulthood would struggle. For example, they are very likely to develop problems with drugs and relationships. Though coolness may offer popularity during youth, it is how good you are that contributes to long-term success. Even the most uncool kid will probably do well if they have at least some close friends.”
32. Which quality is more often related to cool people according to the text?
A. Respectfulness. B. Helpfulness. C. Adventurousness. D. Agreeableness.
33. Who are most likely to try to appear cool?
A. Babies. B. Teenagers. C. Young adults. D. The elderly.
34. What is Dr. Warren’s attitude to cool adults?
A. Unfavorable. B. Appreciative. C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Possible problems for cool kids.
B. Advantages of being a good person.
C. Shared qualities of good and cool people.
D. Differences between cool and good persons.

I’d just finished a months-long project. When a friend asked how I’d celebrate, the idea never occurred to me — I was already thinking of the next task. 36 Here are some simple ways to celebrate your every day.
Start your day as a celebration.
Celebrate the fact that you are alive. Take a few moments every morning to simply enjoy a few minutes over a cup of coffee or tea and breathe in the aroma (香气), feel the warmth, and enjoy the comfort. 37 When you start your day feeling thankful and happy, you will likely have more joy for the rest of the day.
Notice the small achievements.
We often forget to value ourselves. Did you choose to spend your lunch break taking a walk and getting some exercise? 38 Did you spend a few extra minutes giving a friend or co-worker a helping hand? Celebrate yourself for giving somebody the time to make their life easier. When we notice the little things in life we did well, it improves our mood and self-esteem (自尊).
39
This tip has a double benefit — when you celebrate someone else, both of you feel great! Start taking notice when your partner does little things, like taking out the trash, making the bed, or cleaning up the bathroom. When you celebrate someone else for the little things, they feel valued and will be more willing to help again.
Celebrate every evening.
Just as you begin every day in celebration, let’s end the day celebrating and reflecting upon the day that’s passed. Spend a few minutes over a cup of tea, or lying in bed, giving thanks for all the blessings in your day and your life. 40
A. Celebrate others.
B. Do something out of the ordinary.
C. I choose to fill my mind with positive things.
D. Celebrate yourself for taking care of your body.
E. Give thanks for the day that is coming your way.
F. This will add joy to your day, warmth to your heart, and more to celebrate.
G. Her question made me see we should celebrate all life’s achievements, big or small.

When Leo transferred to a new high school in the middle of the term, he rarely spoke a single word. Coming from a quiet small town far away, he was extremely shy and quiet, always sitting silently at the back of the classroom. He never participated in any group activities, and even when the teacher asked him simple questions, he would lower his head shyly and reply in a low voice.
But during the art class, Jake, the most lively and playful boy in their class, secretly glanced at Leo’s painting and couldn’t hide the surprise on his face. One day, Ms. White, their art teacher, announced a city-wide art competition, calling on students to create paintings that could reveal their innermost dreams and true emotions. While other students chatted happily and actively shared their creative ideas, Leo sat all alone in his seat, staring blankly at his blank canvas (画布), looking lost and discouraged.
Ms. White walked over and knelt beside him, saying gently, “Everyone has a unique voice in art and yours is just waiting to be heard.” Leo looked up at her for the first time, his eyes full of doubt but also a faint spark of hope. She stayed with him patiently, asking about his beautiful hometown and his hidden hobbies, and little by little, Leo began to open up his heart. With her encouragement, Leo finished his painting and submitted it to the teacher after class, never expecting anyone to notice.
A month later, as soon as classes ended, Jake rushed over to Leo with a bright grin. “Come on, let’s go to the notice board. The result of the art competition is due out today!” he said excitedly. Leo shook his head and whispered, “I’m not going. It has nothing to do with me anyway.” Moments later, loud, excited cheers came from the hallway.

第二节【答案】Jake dashed back and announced the good news. “Leo, you won first place!” he shouted, his voice full of excitement. Leo’s eyes widened in disbelief. He shook his head slightly, thinking it must be a mistake. But Jake grabbed his arm and pulled him toward the hallway. There, on the notice board, was Leo’s painting, a peaceful village with starry skies and children laughing. Ms. White stood nearby, smiling proudly. “I knew you could do it,” she said softly. For the first time, Leo felt seen. A shy smile appeared on his face as classmates gathered around, offering their congratulations.
Everyone soon found Leo’s gradual change. He began to speak more in class, his voice no longer a whisper but clear and steady. He joined group activities and even helped other students with their art projects. Jake became his close friend, and together they painted pictures on the classroom wall. Leo no longer sat at the back alone. He had found his voice, not through words alone, but through colors and brushes. Ms. White’s words had planted a seed, and now Leo was finally blooming. Sometimes a single act of kindness is all it takes to help a quiet heart find its way.
