Baharudin, aged 35, is breathing heavily as she lifts her legs. She is 165 centimetres tall and weighs 110 kilogrammes. The Malaysian woman blames her diet for her weight gain. Baharudin added that, for years, she also was not physically active and did not exercise.
Her story is a common one across Malaysia. About 50 percent of the country’s adults are obese (肥胖的) and about 30 percent of young people are overweight. Baharudin and her husband are trying to change their lifestyles by exercising regularly and eating healthier food.
Tumirin is now retired, but once served in the Malaysian armed forces. She is physically fit, measuring 157 centimetres tall and weighing just 56 kilogrammes. She says the country’s obesity crisis is leading to high rates of heart disease and related medical conditions.
Kevin Zahri is one of Malaysia’s leading fitness influencers. He founded a local weight loss movement called Jom Kurus, which means “let’s get thin” or “let’s lose weight”. Every year, thousands of Malaysians join six-week-long Jom Kurus fitness camps.
They meet several times a week for exercises and to learn more about nutrition. There also are social media support groups. At one recent class, people did leg lifts, pushups and stretches.
Kevin Zahri says the average person at the camp drops four to five kilos of weight during the six-week programme. But his real goal is to help Malaysians make healthy changes that will last a lifetime. That is what Baharudin is pushing for by getting on a regular exercise routine and improving her diet.
But while Jom Kurus and other programmes are helping Malaysians change their lifestyles, it is clear that these classes only treat a small part of the nation’s obesity crisis. Zahri says the number of people they have targeted is very small compared to the people who need more exercise and changes in diet.
Baharudin knows that changing lifelong behaviours is not easy, but she says she is strong-minded enough to make this the beginning of a new way of life.
24. What does Tumirin imply about Malaysia’s obesity problem?
A. It can be easily solved. B. It mainly affects the young.
C. It results from military service. D. It brings serious health risks.
25. What is the main purpose of Jom Kurus fitness camps?
A. To help people lose weight quickly. B. To attract more social media followers.
C. To promote long-term healthy lifestyles. D. To organize various fitness competitions.
26. What is the author’s attitude towards Jom Kurus programmes?
A. Unclear. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Objective.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Malaysia Fights Its Obesity Problem B. A Woman’s Weight-loss Journey
C. Popular Fitness Camps in Malaysia D. Ways to Lose Weight in Daily Life

Hawaii hosts unique birds and these birds are at great risk. The biggest threat is a disease called avian malaria. Avian malaria is similar to the malaria that humans get, but it only affects birds. The disease is spread by mosquitoes.
Before the 1800s, there were no mosquitoes in Hawaii. But once they arrived, birds had no protection from their bites. Some birds moved higher into Hawaii’s mountains, where it was too cool for mosquitoes. But as the climate has warmed, the insects are even reaching these areas.
In 2016, BNM, along with the American Bird Conservancy and other partners, began a programme to lower the numbers of mosquitoes — by releasing more mosquitoes. That may sound like a bad plan, but there are a couple of tricks involved. First off, they are only releasing male mosquitoes, which don’t bite. Secondly, the mosquitoes they are letting go have been specially treated so that they carry a bacterium called Wolbachia.
When male mosquitoes with Wolbachia mate with female mosquitoes, the female’s eggs will never hatch. By releasing huge numbers of specially treated males, the group hopes more and more female mosquitoes will lay eggs that don’t hatch. In time, this should bring mosquito numbers down. But it’s not easy. The birds that need protection are spread out over large areas in the mountains of different Hawaiian islands.
In 2023, the group began using helicopters to release the mosquitoes. But helicopters are costly, and they’re also a risk for the pilot and passengers. So now, the group is testing the use of drones to deliver mosquito pods (吊舱). Drones can reach remote areas safely, and more cheaply than helicopters.
But there were challenges. First, the group needed to figure out how to control the temperature of the pods so that the mosquitoes could survive the trip. They also needed to figure out how to carry and release the pods.
The drones delivered their first mosquitoes in April. Once the tests are complete, the group plans to use the drones regularly. They hope the programme will give Hawaii’s birds a chance to recover.
28. Why did some Hawaii birds move to higher mountains before?
A. To find more rich food sources. B. To seek mosquito-free cool zones.
C. To avoid human hunting activities. D. To build stronger nests against strong winds.
29. What can we learn about Wolbachia in the programme?
A. It affects male’s mating ability.
B. It prevents mated females’ eggs from hatching.
C. It is common in most Hawaiian female mosquitoes.
D. It spreads from mosquitoes to protected birds over time.
30. What’s the advantage of drones over helicopters?
A. They are safer and cheaper than helicopters.
B. They can carry heavier loads of mosquito pods.
C. They operate faster and cover larger areas daily.
D. They require less maintenance than helicopters.
31. What is BNM’s final goal?
A. To completely remove all mosquitoes in Hawaii.
B. To test new technologies like drones and bacteria.
C. To prove that male mosquitoes are harmless to birds.
D. To help Hawaii’s native birds recover from extinction risks.

Modern humans — also known as Homo sapiens — began in Africa hundreds of thousands of years ago and later started spreading to Europe, Asia and other places. Scientists believe they met and mated with Neanderthals. The mixing of these groups had a major influence on humans’ genetic code.
However, scientists don’t know exactly when or how the two groups interacted. But two new studies provide some additional details about the timing of this contact.
One group examined genetic material from three female and three male Homo sapiens individuals who lived around 45,000 years ago. That research involved the oldest genes from Homo sapiens ever examined, or sequenced (测定序列) .
Some of the genes came from bones found in a cave in the central German village of Ranis. Other material came from a woman believed to have lived at around the same time in a cave in what is now the Czech Republic.
Researchers estimated the period of mixing between Neanderthals and humans at about 49,000 to 45,000 years ago. The findings were recently published in Nature.
A second group examined genetic material from 300 present-day and ancient Homo sapiens. This included 59 individuals who lived between 2,000 and 45,000 years ago. That study, published in the journal Science, estimated the period of mixing at about 50,500 to 43,500 years ago.
The scientists said their new findings on the mixing and mating of the groups suggested the activities happened a little more recently than thought in the past. They believe the contact continued over many generations.
The team noted it is difficult to know the exact nature of the interactions between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals based on the examined data. The researchers also could not confirm exactly where the mixing and mating happened. However, they believe it was most likely somewhere in the Middle East.
The researchers noted most modern humans still have genetic material from Neanderthals that accounts for an estimated one to two percent of their DNA. They said modern-day genetic traits linked to skin colour, hair colour and even nose shape can relate back to the Neanderthals. Our genetic makeup also includes links to another group of human ancestors called Denisovans.
32. Where did Homo sapiens originate from?
A. Africa. B. Germany.
C. The Middle East. D. The current Czech Republic.
33. What do the two new studies have in common?
A. Researchers used the same genetic material.
B. They discover the exact time and location of the contact.
C. Their conclusions have no reliable basis.
D. Researchers have used ancient genes to learn more details.
34. How does the author develop Paragraphs 5~6?
A. In order of space. B. By listing numbers.
C. By showing examples. D. In order of importance.

A. Characteristics. B. Differences. C. Changes. D. Codes.

John, a small boy, stood on a grassy ground. He held his self-made kite with the string. He wore a serious look, pulling the kite along behind him. He ran as quickly as possible. He turned his head, wishing the kite would rise into the sky. Yet it only jumped and rolled on the grass, sending tiny grass bits everywhere. Soon he felt tired and short of breath. He paused and breathed out a long sigh.
He walked over to his sister Lucy, who sat not far away. “Could you help lift my kite up?” he asked. Lucy walked up and took the kite from his hands. “Alright, start running the second I toss it up!” she told him. John nodded hard and got set to run. Lucy threw the kite high up in the air. But John only stared at her move and did not move his feet. He stayed still for a second. The kite dropped onto the grass once more.
“Oh! You’re so awkward!” Lucy said unhappily, tapping her foot hard. “This is all your mistake.” John talked back right away. At that time, their aunt, sitting and watching on a wooden seat, spoke softly, “Have another try, kids.”
They tried a second time with greater care. They cooperated well, and Lucy let go of the kite at the perfect time. However, right when the wind caught the kite, a sudden cross wind rushed over the field. The kite was pushed into a short bush. Its long tail got stuck in the thin branches right away. It hung upside down, just like a bird locked in place.
“See! It’s because you threw it to one side!” John shouted, pointing with anger. “As if I can control the wind to blow straight,” Lucy replied, nearly crying. Their aunt stepped forward to help. She slowly pulled the tail free from the small sticks. She wound the string tight and looked at the upset kids. “There are too many trees around here. Let’s look for a wider empty place and have another go,” she said in a warm voice.

W: Oh Adam, I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize you were so unhappy. Listen, it took me a year to settle into life in Miami. I’ve made some really good friends by joining a tennis club. You just need to give it some time. What efforts are you making to meet new people?
M: Well, none actually.
W: You were on the volleyball team at your old school. There must be a team in your school. Why don’t you try out?
M: I guess I could.
W: And you are into books. Why not join a book club? Go to your local library and ask.
M: That sounds interesting. I’ll do that.

W: I would like to discuss some problems that I met on the trip last week.
M: I’m sorry, could you tell me exactly what they are?
W: The bus of your company didn’t take us to the hotel on time. So we had to wait for over 30 minutes in the burning heat.
M: Sorry, we’re trying to fix that. Are there other things?
W: Actually, on the first day, some of my companions had a stomachache. And everyone thought it was because of the bad lunch we ate that day. So I had to eat out for the remaining four days of my trip, even though meals were included in my holiday package.
M: I do apologize for that bad experience. We can offer you discounts on future trips or a free city tour as compensation.
W: They won’t really make up for my bad experience. The only fair solution is to have the full sum I paid for the trip returned.

Ways to Lose Weight in Daily Life
【答案】24. D 25. C 26. D 27. A
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍了马来西亚严峻的肥胖现状,引用相关人士观点说明肥胖带来的健康危害,介绍本土减脂健身项目,并客观指出该项目的局限性。
【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“She says the country’s obesity crisis is leading to high rates of heart disease and related medical conditions. (她说,该国的肥胖危机正导致心脏病及相关疾病发病率居高不下)”可知,Tumirin暗示肥胖问题会带来严重健康隐患。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段“But his real goal is to help Malaysians make healthy changes that will last a lifetime. (但他真正的目标是帮助马来西亚人养成能维持终身的健康生活习惯)”可知,健身营核心目的是倡导长期健康生活方式。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“Kevin Zahri says the average person at the camp drops four to five kilos of weight during the six-week programme. (Kevin Zahri表示参加训练营的普通人在这为期六周的项目中平均会减掉四到五公斤体重)”以及倒数第二段“But while Jom Kurus and other programmes are helping Malaysians change their lifestyles, it is clear that these classes only treat a small part of the nation’s obesity crisis.

【答案】28. B 29. B 30. A 31. D

【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“When male mosquitoes with Wolbachia mate with female mosquitoes, the female’s eggs will never hatch.(当携带沃尔巴克氏菌的雄蚊与雌蚊交配时,雌蚊的卵永远不会孵化。)”可知,沃尔巴克氏菌的作用是阻止交配后的雌蚊产卵孵化。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Drones can reach remote areas safely, and more cheaply than helicopters.(无人机可以安全地到达偏远地区,而且比直升机更便宜。)”可知,无人机相对于直升机的优势是更安全、更便宜。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“They hope the programme will give Hawaii’s birds a chance to recover.(他们希望这个项目能给夏威夷的鸟类一个恢复的机会。)”可知,这个项目希望能给夏威夷的鸟类一个恢复的机会,可推理出BNM的最终目标是帮助夏威夷的本土鸟类从灭绝风险中恢复过来。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
They quickly found a wide grassy area without any trees. John and Lucy positioned themselves again. “This time, I’ll run as fast as I can,” John said, his voice filled with determination. Lucy nodded and lifted the kite high. “Ready? Go!” she shouted. John nodded and began to run, but this time he tripped over a small bump in the grass. The kite slipped from Lucy’s hands and fell flat onto the ground. John sat up, frustrated, and kicked the grass. “It’s no use!” he muttered. Lucy sighed, her shoulders drooping.
“Don’t give up, John. Just have another try,” their aunt cheered them on. She walked over and gently placed a hand on John’s shoulder. “Remember, the wind is your friend. Run straight into it and don’t look back.” John took a deep breath, stood up, and brushed off his clothes. Lucy picked up the kite with a fresh smile. This time, they worked in perfect sync. The wind caught the kite just as Lucy released it. John’s heart leaped with joy as he let out more string. That day, John and Lucy learned that patience and teamwork could turn frustration into triumph.
