A.J.was a beloved teacher at Brittany's high school,in Brooklyn. It was important to her that
her daughter would make it.Brittany and Sean agreed.
Days later,on the moming of Friday,September 24,A.J.died.Keeping their promise,that
very afternoon,Brittany walked arm in arm with her father across the football field with others await
the outcome of the voting.
Brittany wasn't named homecoming queen that day;Nyla Covington was. But,like many in the
closely linked community,Nyla had heard about A.J.In an unplanned gesture, moments after
receiving the crown ()Nyla walked over to Brittany, removed it from her head, and placed
atop Brittany's.The two held each other, tearfully for support."She'd rather have her mom than a
crown,"Nyla told CNN.By handing it to Brittany,"I was telling her that she was her mom's
queen, and that she was loved by many, especially me."
"I felt so much love from her,and I just felt so much love for her,"said Brittany, who paid

D A moving story of kindness and selflessness
A friend invited me to her birthday party-45 minutes away with a aress code.I was not
interested but didn't want to refuse her directly. So I lied, citing my kid's sports game. But after
she ran into my kid,my he started to falt apart..,To cover it up pretended I got a cold and tried
to make it real by adding details. Then more deralls to support tne first details.By the end,I'd
invented a fake doctor.
Looking back.I realize my lies didn't actually protect her feelings. They only made things
worse.And that's wnen it hit me all those "I'm busy"excuses weren't really kind.It's a form of
disrespect disguised (as kinaness. When lying to your friends about being busy, you're not
protecting their feelings-you're controlling them. You're deciding they can't deal with an honest
“no”.
There's aiso a trust problem.Researchers at the Uniorsity,of Notre Dame conducted a study
and found that people who told fewer lies reported stronger rerationships.Meanwhile,a 2023 study
publisned in Communications Psychology found that people who lie regularly-even in small ways-
tend to doubt others more often and feel less socially connected. The white lie doesn't just affect
your relatonships with others. It quielly weakens.abilly to trust people.
And then there's the practical problem I met personally:Lies are hard to keep up.IThe original
fib (is never the end.You have to remember what you said and to whom, and pray that your
child doesn't betray (you. The mental energy required to keep a lie going could power a
small city.
Finally, consiaer what the lie communicates about how you value the relationship.Being
honest-even if it feels uncomfortable-signals that you take the other person seriously enough to
tell them the truth.Part of being a really kind person is treating people as adults who cam nandle a
polite "no".Lying suggests they can't,which is its own quiet form of rudeness.
28.The writer lied to her friend mainly because
A.She had to attend her kid's match
B.The party was too far and had a dress code
C.She was unwilling to go to the party
D.She suddenly caught a cold
29.What can we learn about the writer's lie?

高一英语试卷第4页(共8页)
C.Her child helped her cover the lie successfully.
D.Her friend found the lie right away.
30.What do the studies in Paragraph 3 suggest?

B.Small lies have no influenceon trust.
C.Regular liars are more connected with society.
D.White lies only hurt others instead of oneself.
31.What is the writer's attitude towards "polite white lies"?

Language is embedded in almost every aspect of the way we interact with the world. It's hard to
imagine wnat it would be like not to have it.What would be the result if we didn't have names for
things or didn't have experience talking about things that hadn't actually happened?Would we be
able to think? What would our thoughts be like?
The answer to the question of whether thought is possible without language depends on what
you mean by "thought".Can you experience impressions and feelings without language?Yes,and
very few would argue otherwise But there is a difference between being able to experience "pain"
and possessing the concep pain. Most would say true thought involves having the concept.
Many artists ana scierosts say they do not use words to solve problems, but images. The
autistic author Temple Grandin,in explaining how she thinks with images rather than jo language
says that concepts for her are collectians of images.
Of course,Grandin has fanguage;and knows how to use it,so it is hard to say now much or
her thinking has been influenced by it,but there are people who are deficient in the ability to use
language and think in the way she describes.
There is evidence that deaf people cut off from language possess the ability to think before
being exposed to language. Also, the sign languages deveroped by deaf students without language
models display the kind of thinking that goes far beyond mere sensory impression or practical
problem solving.
However, while it appears that we can indeed think without language, tnere are certain kinds
of thinking that are made possible by language.Language gives us symbols we can use to fix ideas,
reflect on them, and hold them up for observation. It allows for a level of abstract teasoning we
wouldn't have otherwise. The philosopher Peter Carruthers has argued that there is a cype of inner
language thinking that allows us to bring our own thoughts into awareness. We may be able to think
without language, but language lets us know we are thinking.
32.What does the underlned word "deficient in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.skilled
B.confident
C.curious
.lacking
33.What is the difference mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A Feeling pain and owning the concept of pain.
B.Using language and using images.
C.Common thoughts and scientific thoughts.
D.Sensory feelings and daily experiences.
34.Which statement about Temple Grandin is correct?
A.She never uses language to communicate.
B She thinks and forms concepts with images.
C.She believes language has no influence on her.
D.She solves problems only,by words.
高一英语试卷第5页(共8页)》
35.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.People cannot fhink at all without language.
B.Iorter language stops us from knowing our thoughts.
C.Language enables humans to do abstract reasoning.
D.All types of thinking depend completely on language.

Developing healthy study habits is key to academic success, especially in high scheol. With so
many distractions and responsibilities,it's easy to fall into unproductive routines.36 These
habits will not only boost your grades but also reduce stress and build confidence in your learning
abilities.
Create a consistent study space.
37 It doesn't have to be a fancy desk or a quiet library, but it should be a place where
your brain associates with focus.Keep it organized, free from unnecessary distractions like phones
or loud music, and use it only Ior studying.Over time, this space will signal to your brain that it's
time to work, making it easier to get into the zone.
Break tasks into small,manageable steps.
Large assignments or exam reviews can feel overwhelming at first.8 Instead of thinking
"I need to study for the math final,"break it down into smaller tasks:"Review Chapter 3
formulas"or "Solve 10 practice problems on quadratic equauons."Checking off these small wins
will keep you motivated and prevent procrastination.
Use active learning techniques instead of passive reading.
Simply rereading notes or textbooks is often ineffective for long-term memory.39 Try
summarizing key ideas in your own words, teaching concepts to a friend or even an imaginary
audience),or creating flashcards for tricky terms. These methods force your brain to engage with
the material, making it more likely to stick.
Take regular breaks and prioritize rest.
Many students believe that studying for hours without stopping is the best way to learn.
However, our brains need time to rest and process informauon.4f Short breaks-like walking
around,drinking water,or stretching-can refresh your focus..dditionally,getting enough sleep
each night is just as important as studying;a tired brain struggres to retain new information.
A.Instead of tackling everything at once, divide big goals into tiny, specific tasks.
B.The good news is that you can build these habits with a few simple, intentional changes.
C A dedicated study spaee helps train your brain to switch into "learning mode"quickly.
D.To make studying more effective, swap passive habits for active ones.
E.You don't need a perfect setup to start building a productive study routine.
F.Overworking yourself can lead to burout, which harms both your grades and your health.
G.Active learning takes more effort at first, but it pays off in better understanding and recall.
