Have you ever seen colourful lights dancing across the dark night sky? This amazing natural wonder is called an aurora (极光). For centuries, people have looked up and been both amazed and afraid. Today, many people still travel thousands of miles (英里) just to see this beautiful light show.
Auroras usually come out in places near the North or South Pole, such as Norway, Iceland and northern Canada. The good time to see them is from September to March, when nights are long and the sky is dark enough. On a clear winter night, you might see the lights begin to move slowly across the stars.
An aurora looks like soft, moving curtains (窗帘) of green, pink, purple and sometimes even red light. Where do these beautiful colours come from? Scientists say that tiny bits (微小粒子) from the sun travel through space and hit Earth’s air. When they meet, they make a soft light—not so different from the way a TV screen lights up.
Long ago, some people were afraid of auroras. They believed the lights were a bad sign. But today, we know they are a great gift from nature. One traveller wrote, “When I stood under those dancing lights, I was so small, yet so lucky to be alive (活着的).”
Now, you can even see this wonder in China. There is an aurora watching station in Mohe, Heilongjiang. If travelling there is too hard, you can watch live videos online to enjoy the magic.
25. Where do auroras usually appear?
A. In hot southern places.
B. Near the North or South Pole.
C. On high mountains far away from cities.
26. What makes the colours of an aurora?
A. Moonlight hitting clouds.
B. Raindrops breaking sunlight.
C. Tiny bits from the sun hitting Earth’s air.
27. What does the underlined word “sign” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Symbol. B. Picture. C. Name.
28. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Auroras only have green colour.
B. There is a place to watch auroras in China.
C. Auroras can only be seen in Western countries.
【答案】25. B 26. C 27. A 28. B

Bob helps people clear (清理) snow for twenty-five dollars each time in winter. It was a cold morning. While Bob was clearing snow, he saw an old woman walking up to him. “Could you help me clear the snow in my yard, too?” she asked him slowly. Bob said “yes”.
He followed the old woman to her house. She lived in a small old house. It was hard for her to walk out because of the snow. “No one in your family can help clear snow?” Bob asked. “I have no children and my husband passed away (去世) two years ago,” she answered sadly. Bob didn’t say anything after knowing about that, but was ready (准备好的) to try his best to clear snow.
When he finished, she asked him how much she should give him. Bob told her, “Twenty-five.” She went into the house, came back out, and gave him twenty-five cents. She then asked if it was enough. Bob thought for a minute and said, “Yeah, I think that is good.”
He kept clearing snow for “twenty-five” cents each time until she passed away.
29. What can we know about the old woman?
A. She had much money. B. She didn’t want to pay Bob. C. She was poor and lonely (孤独的).

A. In hot southern places.

C. On high mountains far away from cities.
26. What makes the colours of an aurora?
A. Moonlight hitting clouds.

The day before yesterday, our school announced it would hold a sports meeting. My good friend Jack said to me, “David, you can run fast. Why not try the 800-metre race?” I shook my head at once. Running alone in front of so many people scared me. I was afraid of falling behind and being laughed at.
Jack looked at me and said, “It’s not about winning. It’s about having the courage to try. Just go for it!” Those words stayed in my mind all night. The next morning, I went to the PE teacher and signed up (报名).
The following weeks were hard. I practised on the playground every day after school. My legs hurt and I wanted to give up. But Jack ran beside me and shouted, “Keep going! You are stronger than you think!” Slowly, I got better and faster.
On the big day, I was very nervous. When the race began, I ran with all my strength (长处). I heard my classmates shouting my name. I came in fourth and won no medal. But when I crossed the finish line, Jack ran over and hugged me. “You did it!” he said.
