解析:根据文章第一段中“You’ll not only taste 6-8 of LA’s best street eats but also learn how to capture the perfect, professional-quality food and urban landscape photos using just your smartphone”可知,游客不仅可以品尝美食,还可以学习如何用手机拍摄高质量的食物照片。
解析:根据“What to Bring & Know Before You Go”部分中“We can accommodate vegetarian and nut-free diets if reported at least 24 hours in advance”可知,如果有特殊饮食需求,需要提前24小时告知组织方,因此建议参与者提前说明饮食需求。故选A。
根据第三段“When little penguins become oiled, they will try to preen and clean the toxic oil from their feathers, and swallowing it can kill them. It also damages their delicate feathers, which exposes their skin to extreme temperatures and they are left cold, heavy and unable to swim or hunt for food.(当小企鹅被石油污染时,它们会试图梳理羽毛,清理羽毛上的有毒石油,吞咽有毒石油可能会杀死它们。它还会损害它们脆弱的羽毛,使它们的皮肤暴露在极端温度下,它们会变得又冷又重,无法游泳或觅食)”可知,石油泄漏对企鹅的直接影响是导致它们的羽毛被破坏了。故选B。
25.推理判断题。根据第五段“In 2001, another major oil spill occurred in the waters near Phillip Island, with a total of 438 penguin’s. affected. 96%were successfully rescued and released back into the wild with the help of the Penguin Foundation and these sweaters.(2001年,菲利普岛附近海域发生了另一起重大石油泄漏事件,共有438只企鹅遇难。受到影响。在企鹅基金会和这些毛衣的帮助下,96%的企鹅成功获救并被放归野外)”可知,第5段列出了这些数字是为了说明运动的成就。故选B。
26.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Sweaters for penguins must be crafted from wool and follow specific knitting guidelines. Numerous sweaters that have failed to meet the standards have been repurposed for toy penguins. By selling toy penguins wearing these sweaters, the Penguin Foundation raises fund for the wildlife on Phillip Island.(企鹅的毛衣必须用羊毛制作,并遵循特定的编织指南。许多不符合标准的毛衣被用来制作玩具企鹅。通过出售穿着这些毛衣的玩具企鹅,企鹅基金会为菲利普岛的野生动物筹集了资金)”可知,这种毛衣的生产要求很高。故选A。
根据第二段“A Chinese student studying in the UK said her tutor, who quit education to knit sweaters for penguins in Antarctica, has been generating buzz online. The charitable act of knitting sweaters for penguins is, in fact, a real initiative.(一名在英国留学的中国学生表示,她的导师在网上引起了热议。
根据第一段“This trend has driven scientists to search for safe, natural preservatives. They have turned their attention to a part of the cashew nut that is often thrown away — the shell.(这一趋势促使科学家寻找安全的天然防腐剂。他们将目光投向腰果身上通常被丢弃的部位 —— 果壳。)”可知,科学家研究腰果壳是为寻找人造防腐剂的天然替代物。
29.主旨大意题。根据第二段“They applied the liquid to beef samples at different concentrations. Some meat was left untreated as controls. The samples were then stored under different conditions — some at room temperature and others in refrigeration — for two weeks.(他们将不同浓度的液体涂抹在牛肉样本上,部分牛肉不作处理作为对照组,随后样本分常温、冷藏两种环境存放两周。)”
根据第三段“The effect was strongest at higher concentrations, with a 2.0% solution providing excellent protection while maintaining meat quality.(浓度越高防腐效果越好,2.0%浓度的溶液在保障肉质的同时起到极佳的防护作用。)”
根据第四段“The researchers note that further studies are needed to understand whether the liquid affects the taste and texture of the beef, and how it might be combined with modern packaging for even better results. Still, this study opens a window into nature’s own way of keeping food fresh — hidden inside a humble cashew shell.(研究人员表示还需进一步研究该液体是否影响牛肉口感质地、如何配合包装提升效果,但这项研究仍为天然保鲜技术打开了新方向。)”
根据文章第一段“This ‘shallow work’ while often unavoidable, doesn’t create much new value and is easy to do. (这种‘浅层工作’尽管往往无法避免,但不会创造太多新价值,而且做起来很容易。)”可知,浅层工作的特点是,通常无法避免,但价值较低。故选D项。
33.细节理解题。文章第一段提到“In the digital age, the concept of ‘deep work’ — the ability to put all your attention on a difficult task — is becoming increasingly valuable, yet increasingly rare. (在数字时代,‘深度工作’这一概念——即全神贯注处理高难度任务的能力——正变得愈发珍贵,却也愈发稀缺。) ”,且第二段首句指出“Newport suggests that the ability to perform deep work is a superpower in our competitive economy. (Newport认为,在竞争激烈的当下经济环境中,能进行深度工作的能力堪称一项超能力)”,说明他的核心观点是,保持专注的能力(深度工作)极具价值。故选C项。
34.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“However, critics point out that not all jobs allow for large, uninterrupted blocks of time. For many in service-oriented or cooperative roles, responsiveness is key. (然而,批评者指出,并非所有工作都能允许大段不受干扰的时间。对于许多从事服务型或协作型工作的人来说,快速响应能力才是关键。)”可知,批评者的担忧是,深度工作并非适用于所有职业类型。故选B项。
35.词句猜测题。根据最后一段“By consciously setting aside time for deep work and setting clear boundaries, individuals can enhance their efficiency without compromising their roles in team-based or service-driven settings. (通过合理规划深度工作时间、设定工作边界,个体可以提升效率,同时不compromising自己在团队或服务型工作中的角色。)”可知个体应是在提高效率的同时不削弱自身在团队中的作用。也就是compromising在这里意为“削弱、损害”,与weakening同义。故选A项。

37.根据后文“Freestyle jump rope isn’t just counting jumps. It represents a shift from random play to artistic performance. It requires complex footwork, acrobatic (杂技般的) tricks, and dance-inspired movements, all arranged to music. The focus is equally on artistic expression and physical endurance, creating a performance art that challenges both body and creativity.(花式跳绳不只是单纯数数跳了多少下,更是从随性玩耍向艺术表演的蜕变。它需要复杂步法、杂技技巧与舞蹈化动作,全程配合音乐编排呈现,艺术表现力与身体耐力同等重要,最终打造出一项考验体能又激发创意的表演艺术)”可知,此空是段落小标题,下文核心讲自由式跳绳不只是数数,而是融合步法、杂技技巧、舞蹈动作,兼顾艺术表达与体能,对应A选项“认可其艺术表现力”。故选A。
38.根据上文“While the physical benefits are clear-improving heart health, coordination, and bone density — the psychological advantages are equally valuable.(虽然其带来的身体上的益处显而易见——比如改善心脏健康、增强协调能力以及增加骨密度——但其带来的心理上的好处也同样重要)”以及后文“The rhythmic jumping serves as moving meditation (冥想). It helps clear the mind after studying and provides a healthy outlet for stress, promoting mental well-being.(这种有节奏的跳跃行为可以被视为一种有节奏的冥想方式。

学校和青少年活动中心会设立跳绳俱乐部)”以及后文“When learning complex group routines, participants must trust each other and coordinate their movements precisely. This shared experience strengthens bonds and creates a supportive environment for growth.(在学习复杂的团队动作时,参与者们必须相互信任,并精确地协调各自的动作。
40.根据后文“It is, at its heart, a genuinely fun, highly accessible, and deeply rewarding sport that challenges both the body and the mind at the same time, offering participants a truly unique and enriching blend of healthy exercise, artistic creativity, and meaningful community that extends far beyond mere physical activity.(究其本质,花式跳绳是一项真正有趣、极易上手且益处满满的运动,能同时锻炼身心,让参与者收获健康运动、艺术创意与深厚社群联结的独特丰富体验,其价值远超单纯的身体活动本身)”可知,此空是结尾总结句,后文用大段文字总结自由式跳绳有趣、易参与、锻炼身心,还兼具运动、创意、社群价值,远超单纯运动,D选项“自由式跳绳的内涵远超表象”,总起总结段,完美收尾。

分析句子成分和句子结构可知,设空后含有谓语动词were sorting,与前面的句子archaeologists successfully lifted it out of the pit a year later之间需要连词连接,所以设空处要填连词;根据句意可知,they were sorting out all other bronze objects piled on the top of the statue对前面的句子起着补充说明作用,所以这是一个非限制性定语从句;先行词是a year later,在从句中作时间状语,所以要用关系副词when来引导从句。故填when。
故填is attached。
故填the。
故填in。
根据句意可知,此处考查固定搭配not just/only…but(also),意为“不仅……而且”。故填but。
故填to include。

Dear Tom,
I am more than glad to know that you are interested in the traditional Chinese literature. It’s never easy to learn Chinese characters and essays. Even native Chinese speakers may find it hard to learn them well, so you don’t have to feel upset. Here are some useful tips.
First, turn to the Internet for help when you have a problem, where you can learn how to read and write the characters. Second, you can learn from Chinese people around and I’m always here to help. But the most important is to keep on learning and reading. You are sure to make progress!
Best wishes!

For the next week, Megan and Liam busied themselves with the project. They first cleaned the messy garden, moving old chairs and folding tables to a sunny spot under the big tree. Liam scrubbed the dirt off the furniture and arranged them in a circle for kids. Megan brought colorful posters of dinosaurs and space — Liam’s favorite — and they hung them on the tree. They also picked out a lot of picture books and storybooks for young readers and placed them on a wooden shelf from the storage. Every evening, they discussed fun activities like book sharing and role-playing, with Liam coming up with many creative ideas.
On the opening day of the project, they waited nervously in the garden. Soon many kids came, attracted by the colorful posters and interesting books. Liam became a great guide: he read dinosaur stories aloud and acted out some parts with vivid gestures, making everyone laugh happily. The garden was filled with soft laughter and reading voices, never disturbing the quiet inside the library. The head librarian came and praised them warmly, saying the garden reading corner was a wonderful addition. Megan smiled, knowing she had found the best way to let Liam’s energy shine and keep the library quiet.

Text 1
W: Mr. Smith, could I move my seat to the front?
M: What’s the reason?
W: Tom is sitting right in front of me, and his height makes it hard for me to see the notes on the blackboard.
Text 2
W: We’ve been spending most of our time at the office lately.
M: Yeah, business has been quieter than before.
W: It feels rather unusual, given how busy we used to be—always going out and showing customers around.
Text 3
W: I looked up this word in the dictionary, but I’m still not sure when to use it.
M: Don’t worry. I’ll act out a scene where this word fits perfectly.
W: Great!
Text 4
M: I’m planning a camping trip.
W: Oh, to the city park?
M: No. Ever since we saw the sunrise at the seaside, I’ve been dying to see one from up high.
W: That sounds amazing.
Text 5
W: Ryan, is your knee injury acting up again?
M: It’s nothing serious. I think I can push through the second half.
W: That’s the spirit. But the team doctor will evaluate whether you’re able to continue playing.
M: Alright.
Text 6
W: Kevin, I’m going to perform a song at the school festival.
M: Have you decided on a song?
W: ⑥I’m working on a song called Spring, and I plan to sing it while playing the piano. ⑥However, I need help with the words. Would you be interested in writing them?
M: Sure, what do you want the song to convey?
W: ⑦I titled the song Spring because I want it to feel like a new beginning. I hope it can give people a lift if they’re struggling, especially when they don’t have family by their side.
Text 7
W: Mobile Internet has really benefited our lives, don’t you think?
M: Definitely! ⑧In the morning, the first thing I do is to open my fitness app to track the miles I run outdoors.
W: That’s a good way to start a day. I usually use a takeaway app to order a cup of coffee to refresh myself.
M: Sounds nice. By lunchtime, I check the news online while having my meal. After I get home, I watch videos to relieve work stress.
W: I end my day by using messaging apps to share funny moments with my family.
Text 8
M: ⑩I ordered a lamp online, but it turned out to be different from what I expected.
W: What’s wrong with it?
M: The color is fine, and the lighting is just as expected. ⑩But the description said the lamp was made of metal, yet it felt completely like plastic.
W: ⑪Did you check the online reviews before placing the order?
M: Yes, the overall rating was high. I guess I shouldn’t trust those reviews anymore.
W: Well, it’s better to have some information than none, but you really need to take time to pick out what’s useful. ⑪Reviews are not always trustworthy, so I always spend quite a bit of time figuring out which ones are reliable.
M: Any tips?
W: ⑫Pay attention to the date. Older reviews, whether positive or negative, may not reflect the latest state of the product or service. And always look for reviews with product videos—they’re the next best thing to in-store shopping.

M: ⑬⑭In 2025, SolarSPELL was named one of TIME’s Best Inventions. Today, we’re joined by Professor Heather Ross, who has worked with this remarkable initiative. Welcome!
W: Thanks. ⑬This award was truly meaningful, especially as it came ten years after our first SolarSPELL libraries were piloted in the Pacific Islands.
M: ⑭What do you believe led to this recognition for SolarSPELL?
W: Well, ⑭roughly half the world isn’t online—that’s why we created this solar-powered device. It generates its own offline WiFi hotspot, allowing nearby devices to access its digital library that has tens of thousands of resources in education, agriculture, and health in users’ native languages.
M: That’s inspiring. Could you walk us through the journey of this initiative?
W: Of course. ⑮In 2018, we expanded it to schools in East Africa, and five years after that, extended our reach to schools in the Middle East.
M: What achievements have you made this year?
W: ⑯The device has helped doctors in Vanuatu treat patients more effectively, boosted crop harvests in Rwanda, and enabled self-guided learning for students in Syria.
Text 10
W: ⑱I’d like to share with you the story of my latest project for this season—Thomas’ Antiques. The three-story shop consists of 9,000 bricks, with each floor taking me about two months to complete. It wasn’t a fast build, but the process was satisfying.
⑲The ground floor includes a tall bookshelf, along with desks and colorful books. The next floor up focuses on musical instruments, with a grand piano taking center stage and sheet music for piano, guitar, and violin displayed on the walls as part of the collection. On the top floor, you’ll find the clockmaker’s workshop, featuring grandfather clocks, cuckoo clocks, alarm clocks, and carriage clocks—highlighting the passage of time.
⑳This antique store was inspired by the life of my late grandfather. He was a passionate collector and craftsman, once a clockmaker and skilled in many musical instruments. The objects inside reflect his lifelong interests and the treasures he gathered during his travels. I hope this creation will be enjoyed and appreciated by people all over the world.

"Thank you for your email.I have left to pursue my dream of knitting sweaters for
penguins in Antarctica and no longer work for the School of Economics.I will be out of office
on a permanent,indefinite,open-ended basis until my penguin friends are happy."
A Chinese student studying in the UK said her tutor, who quit education to knit sweaters
for penguins in Antarctica, has been generating buzz online. The charitable act of knitting
sweaters for penguins is,in fact,a real initiative.
A major oil spill occurred in the waters off the Phillip Island in Australia in the late 1990s,
severely affecting local penguins who saw their population shrink over two breeding (
seasons..When little penguins become oiled, they will try to preen(用嘴整理)and clean the
poisonous oil from their feathers, and swallowing it can kill them.It also damages their delicate
feathers, which exposes their skin to extreme temperatures and they are left cold, heavy and
unable to swim or hunt for food.
In response, the Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks launched a public
welfare campaign, calling on enthusiasts worldwide to knit sweaters for the freezing penguins
during the process of rehabilitation.
In 2001,another major oil spill occurred in the waters near Phillip Island, with a total of
438 penguins affected.96%were successfully rescued and released back into the wild with the
help of the Penguin Foundation and these sweaters.
However, some people argue that the sweaters could potentially add extra weight to the
penguins'bodies,or cause them to overheat. The Penguin Foundation explained that the
sweaters are used temporarily to keep penguins warm before their bodies are washed and
feathers recover.
Sweaters for penguins must be crafted from wool and follow specific knitting guidelines.
Numerous sweaters that have failed to meet the standards have been repurposed for toy
penguins.By selling toy penguins wearing these sweaters, the Penguin Foundation raises fund
for the wildlife on Phillip Island.
24.What is the direct impact of the oil spill on penguins?
A.They are unable to prey.
B.Their feathers are spoiled.
C.They are left to extreme cold
D.They have trouble in swallowing.

25.Why are the numbers listed in Paragraph 5?
A.To show the severity of the oil spill
B.To illustrate the achievement of the campaign.
C.To explain the serious conditions of the penguins
D.To add some background information of the oil spill
26.What can we learn about the sweaters from the last paragraph?
A.Their production is demanding.
B.They are highly impractical.
C.Many of them go to waste.
D.They solved the problems for good.
27.What's the main idea of the passage?
A.A major oil spill took place on Phillip Island.
B.A Chinese student dropped out to pursue her own dream.
C.The Penguin Foundation asked for more penguin sweaters.
D.A tutor quit his job to knit sweaters for penguins in Antarctica.

In recent years, consumers have increasingly sought"clean-label"foods-products made
with natural ingredients. This trend has driven scientists to search for safe, natural preservatives.
They have turned their attention to a part of the cashew nut (that is often thrown away-
the shell. From it,they extract Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL)and find that it contains
special natural substances that can fight bacteria and prevent food spoilage ()While this
dark liquid has been studied for use in industries like paint and medicine, its potential for
preserving food had not been fully explored until now.
The scientists designed a careful experiment to test whether CNSL could help preserve
beef, one of the most widely consumed meats globally. They applied the liquid to beef samples
at different concentrations. Some meat was left untreated as controls. The samples were then
stored under different conditions-some at room temperature and others in refrigeration-
for two weeks.
During storage,a detailed microbiological evaluation was conducted to quantify total
viable (counts and specific spoilage organisms.Physicochemical analyses monitored
changes in pH and water activity, while bacteria growth was assessed during storage at room
temperature. The scientists discovered that the CNSL-treated meat showed significantly less
bacterial growth than untreated meat. The effect was strongest at higher concentrations, with a
2.0%solution providing excellent protection while maintaining meat quality.Even at room
temperature,it effectively delayed the meat's souring process and reduced bacteria growth,
helping the beef stay fresh-looking longer.
The researchers note that further studies are needed to understand whether the liquid
affects the taste and texture of the beef, and how it might be combined with modern packaging
for even better results.Still, this study opens a window into nature's own way of keeping food
fresh-hidden inside a humble cashew shell.
28.Why are scientists studying cashew nut shells?
A.To reduce waste in the food industry.
B.To improve the taste of processed foods.
C.To find natural alternatives to artificial preservatives.
D.To develop new industrial materials for paint and medicine.
29.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Why the experiment was conducted.B.Where the beef samples were stored.
C.How the experiment was carried out.D.What comparisons the scientists made.
30.What does the experiment suggest about CNSL?
A.It can improve meat quality over time.
B.It performs best at room temperature.
C.It speeds up the meat's souring process.
D.Its concentration closely relates to storage life.
31.What is the author's attitude towards the future of CNSL?
A.Fully convinced.
B.Cautiously optimistic.
C.Hesitant and doubtful.
D.Neutral and objective.

In the digital age,the concept of"deep work"-the ability to put all your attention on a
difficult task-is becoming increasingly valuable,yet increasingly rare.As Cal Newport,a
computer science professor at Georgetown University, argues in his book Deep Work, the
constant interruptions from emails, social media notifications, and a culture of multitasking are
distracting our attention. This "shallow work"while often unavoidable, doesn't create much
new value and is easy to do.It includes routine administrative tasks, reactive communication,
and piecemeal efforts that occupy much of the modern workday but contribute little to
meaningful progress or innovation.
Newport suggests that the ability to perform deep work is a superpower in our competitive
economy. Those who can master the art of intense focus will be better at learning complex
things quickly and producing high-quality output. To develop this skill,he proposes strategies
such as scheduling strict blocks of time for deep work, embracing boredom instead of
immediately seeking digital stimulation, and quitting social media to reduce the chance of
getting distracted. He emphasizes the importance of creating environments that signal the brain
to enter a state of deep concentration, thereby making it a habitual practice rather than an

occasional feat(壮¥)
However, critics point out that not all jobs allow for large, uninterrupted blocks of time.
For many in service-oriented or cooperative roles, responsiveness is key,Teachers, healthcare
workers, and customer support personnel, for example, must remain highly accessible and
connected throughout their day.The challenge, then,is not to cancel all shallow work but to
find a sustainable balance, perhaps by ritualizing (deep work sessions and
communicating one's focus hours to colleagues. This approach acknowledges the necessity of
collaboration while safeguarding periods dedicated to high-value tasks.
Ultimately, the goal is to develop a personalized workflow that respects both the need for
focused productivity and the demands of interconnected professional environments.By
consciously setting aside time for deep work and setting clear boundaries, individuals can
enhance their efficiency without compromising their roles in team-based or service-driven
settings. This balanced model not only boosts individual performance but also supports
healthier, more sustainable work cultures in the long term.
32.According to the passage,what is a characteristic of"shallow work"?
A.It is difficult to manage.
B.It creates much new value.
C.It takes little time of a workday.
D.It is often unavoidable but less valuable.
33.What is Cal Newport's main argument about deep work?
A.Multitasking is an essential skill now.
B.Email is the biggest source of interruption.
C.The ability to stay focused is highly valuable.
D.Social media platforms are to attract our attention.
34.What is the critics'primary concern regarding deep work?
A.It is too difficult for the average person to learn
B.It may not be practical for all types of professions
C.The strategies proposed by Newport are ineffective.
D.It leads to increased stress and burnout among workers.
35.What does the underlined word"compromising"in the last paragraph mean?
A.Weakening.
B.Dominating.C.Exposing.
D.Claiming.

The community library was Megan's peaceful kingdom,a place of quiet whispers and
turning pages.Every summer vacation, she worked as a student volunteer, feeling responsible
for protecting this quiet space.
Lately,a boy named Liam had become her challenge.Liam wasn't rude -he just
couldn't sit still.Like clockwork,he would get up to "stretch his legs,"pacing between the

bookshelves.Sometimes he'd accidentally knock over a chair.Once,absorbed in a picture book,
he let out a loud Whoa!"when he saw a giant dinosaur filled the page.In the silence, each
sound drew looks from other readers.
Yesterday, when Megan walked over and reminded him gently again,Liam's face turned
red."I'm really sorry,"he whispered sincerely."I don't mean to.I just.I really like being here.
"She believed him.She had noticed that Liam was a curious explorer of books. He would pull
out a book on dinosaurs, reading with intense focus for a few minutes, then move on to another
about volcanoes or space rockets. He just loved the library.
Megan went back to her office.A note on the head librarian's desk caught her eye.It read,
"More Lively Reading Activities?Book sharing?Acting?Seeing this,Megan suddenly
remembered the librarian had mentioned she could feel free to use the garden at the back of the
library. It was a place where some unused items were stored-some old chairs, folding tables,
all piled up gathering dust under a large tree.At the time,Megan hadn't thought much about it.
But now,the thoughts of directing Liam's energy and making use of the garden connected in
her mind.Perhaps the solution wasn't to quiet Liam down, but to give his energy and love for
books a positive stage, right here in their own library.
An idea for a "Garden Reading Corner"project, aimed at young readers, began to take
shape. The next morning, she found Liam among the bookshelves."Want to do something
really cool?she said, her voice low but excited.Liam did not answer at once, but the eager
light in his eyes said everything.

“Thank you for your email. I have left to pursue my dream of knitting sweaters for penguins in Antarctica and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office on a permanent, indefinite, open-ended basis until my penguin friends are happy.”
A Chinese student studying in the UK said her tutor, who quit education to knit sweaters for penguins in Antarctica, has been generating buzz online. The charitable act of knitting sweaters for penguins is, in fact, a real initiative.
A major oil spill occurred in the waters off the Phillip Island in Australia in the late 1990s, severely affecting local penguins who saw their population shrink over two breeding(繁殖) seasons. When little penguins become oiled, they will try to preen(用嘴整理)and clean the poisonous oil from their feathers, and swallowing it can kill them. It also damages their delicate feathers, which exposes their skin to extreme temperatures and they are left cold, heavy and unable to swim or hunt for food.
In response, the Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks launched a public welfare campaign, calling on enthusiasts worldwide to knit sweaters for the freezing penguins during the process of rehabilitation.
In 2001, another major oil spill occurred in the waters near Phillip Island, with a total of 438 penguins affected. 96%were successfully rescued and released back into the wild with the help of the Penguin Foundation and these sweaters.
However, some people argue that the sweaters could potentially add extra weight to the penguins’ bodies, or cause them to overheat. The Penguin Foundation explained that the sweaters are used temporarily to keep penguins warm before their bodies are washed and feathers recover.
Sweaters for penguins must be crafted from wool and follow specific knitting guidelines. Numerous sweaters that have failed to meet the standards have been repurposed for toy penguins. By selling toy penguins wearing these sweaters, the Penguin Foundation raises fund for the wildlife on Phillip Island.
24.What is the direct impact of the oil spill on penguins?
A.They are unable to prey. B.Their feathers are spoiled.
C.They are left to extreme cold. D.They have trouble in swallowing.
25.Why are the numbers listed in Paragraph 5?
A.To show the severity of the oil spill.
B.To illustrate the achievement of the campaign.
C.To explain the serious conditions of the penguins.
D.To add some background information of the oil spill
26.What can we learn about the sweaters from the last paragraph?
A.Their production is demanding. B.They are highly impractical.
C.Many of them go to waste. D.They solved the problems for good.
27.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.A major oil spill took place on Phillip Island.
B.A Chinese student dropped out to pursue her own dream.
C.The Penguin Foundation asked for more penguin sweaters.
D.A tutor quit his job to knit sweaters for penguins in Antarctica.

In recent years, consumers have increasingly sought “clean-label” foods — products made with natural ingredients. This trend has driven scientists to search for safe, natural preservatives. They have turned their attention to a part of the cashew nut (腰果) that is often thrown away — the shell. From it, they extract Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) and find that it contains special natural substances that can fight bacteria and prevent food spoilage (变质). While this dark liquid has been studied for use in industries like paint and medicine, its potential for preserving food had not been fully explored until now.
The scientists designed a careful experiment to test whether CNSL could help preserve beef, one of the most widely consumed meats globally. They applied the liquid to beef samples at different concentrations. Some meat was left untreated as controls. The samples were then stored under different conditions — some at room temperature and others in refrigeration — for two weeks.
During storage, a detailed microbiological evaluation was conducted to quantify total viable (活菌) counts and specific spoilage organisms. Physicochemical analyses monitored changes in pH and water activity, while bacteria growth was assessed during storage at room temperature. The scientists discovered that the CNSL-treated meat showed significantly less bacterial growth than untreated meat. The effect was strongest at higher concentrations, with a 2.0% solution providing excellent protection while maintaining meat quality. Even at room temperature, it effectively delayed the meat’s souring process and reduced bacteria growth, helping the beef stay fresh-looking longer.
The researchers note that further studies are needed to understand whether the liquid affects the taste and texture of the beef, and how it might be combined with modern packaging for even better results. Still, this study opens a window into nature’s own way of keeping food fresh — hidden inside a humble cashew shell.
A.Why the experiment was conducted . B.Where the beef samples were stored.
C.How the experiment was carried out. D.What comparisons the scientists made.
30.What does the experiment suggest about CNSL?
A.It can improve meat quality over time.
B.It performs best at room temperature.
C.It speeds up the meat’s souring process.
D.Its concentration closely relates to storage life.
31.What is the author’s attitude towards the future of CNSL?
A.Fully convinced. B.Cautiously optimistic.
C.Hesitant and doubtful. D.Neutral and objective.
D
In the digital age, the concept of “deep work” — the ability to put all your attention on a difficult task — is becoming increasingly valuable, yet increasingly rare. As Cal Newport, a computer science professor at Georgetown University, argues in his book Deep Work, the constant interruptions from emails, social media notifications, and a culture of multitasking are distracting our attention. This “shallow work” while often unavoidable, doesn’t create much new value and is easy to do. It includes routine administrative tasks, reactive communication, and piecemeal efforts that occupy much of the modern workday but contribute little to meaningful progress or innovation.
Newport suggests that the ability to perform deep work is a superpower in our competitive economy. Those who can master the art of intense focus will be better at learning complex things quickly and producing high-quality output. To develop this skill, he proposes strategies such as scheduling strict blocks of time for deep work, embracing boredom instead of immediately seeking digital stimulation, and quitting social media to reduce the chance of getting distracted. He emphasizes the importance of creating environments that signal the brain to enter a state of deep concentration, thereby making it a habitual practice rather than an occasional feat (壮举).
However, critics point out that not all jobs allow for large, uninterrupted blocks of time. For many in service-oriented or cooperative roles, responsiveness is key, Teachers, healthcare workers, and customer support personnel, for example, must remain highly accessible and connected throughout their day. The challenge, then, is not to cancel all shallow work but to find a sustainable balance, perhaps by ritualizing (仪式化) deep work sessions and communicating one’s focus hours to colleagues. This approach acknowledges the necessity of collaboration while safeguarding periods dedicated to high-value tasks.
Ultimately, the goal is to develop a personalized workflow that respects both the need for focused productivity and the demands of interconnected professional environments. By consciously setting aside time for deep work and setting clear boundaries, individuals can enhance their efficiency without compromising their roles in team-based or service-driven settings. This balanced model not only boosts individual performance but also supports healthier, more sustainable work cultures in the long term.
32.According to the passage, what is a characteristic of “shallow work”?
A.It is difficult to manage. B.It creates much new value.
C.It takes little time of a workday. D.It is often unavoidable but less valuable.
33.What is Cal Newport’s main argument about deep work?
A.Multitasking is an essential skill now.
B.Email is the biggest source of interruption.
C.The ability to stay focused is highly valuable.
D.Social media platforms are to attract our attention.
34.What is the critics’ primary concern regarding deep work?
A.It is too difficult for the average person to learn.
B.It may not be practical for all types of professions.
C.The strategies proposed by Newport are ineffective.
D.It leads to increased stress and burnout among workers.
35.What does the underlined word “compromising” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Weakening. B.Dominating. C.Exposing. D.Claiming.

The community library was Megan’s peaceful kingdom, a place of quiet whispers and turning pages. Every summer vacation, she worked as a student volunteer, feeling responsible for protecting this quiet space.
Lately, a boy named Liam had become her challenge. Liam wasn’t rude — he just couldn’t sit still. Like clockwork, he would get up to “stretch his legs, ”pacing between the bookshelves. Sometimes he’d accidentally knock over a chair. Once, absorbed in a picture book, he let out a loud“Whoa!”when he saw a giant dinosaur filled the page. In the silence, each sound drew looks from other readers.
Yesterday, when Megan walked over and reminded him gently again, Liam’s face turned red. “I’m really sorry, ”he whispered sincerely. “I don’t mean to. I just. I really like being here. ”She believed him. She had noticed that Liam was a curious explorer of books. He would pull out a book on dinosaurs, reading with intense focus for a few minutes, then move on to another about volcanoes or space rockets. He just loved the library.
Megan went back to her office. A note on the head librarian’s desk caught her eye. It read, “More Lively Reading Activities? Book sharing? Acting?” Seeing this, Megan suddenly remembered the librarian had mentioned she could feel free to use the garden at the back of the library. It was a place where some unused items were stored — some old chairs, folding tables, all piled up gathering dust under a large tree. At the time, Megan hadn’t thought much about it. But now, the thoughts of directing Liam’s energy and making use of the garden connected in her mind. Perhaps the solution wasn’t to quiet Liam down, but to give his energy and love for books a positive stage, right here in their own library.
An idea for a “Garden Reading Corner”project, aimed at young readers, began to take shape. The next morning, she found Liam among the bookshelves. “Want to do something really cool?”she said, her voice low but excited. Liam did not answer at once, but the eager light in his eyes said everything.
