On her first day tutoring students from
low-income families at an after-school program
in New York City,Alyssa Kapasi noticed how
many kids were lining up for free sandwiches
and fruit in the cafeteria. Many of these
students don't get enough to eat at home,so a
school lunch or an after-school meal might be
the most food they would get all day.
Kapasi,who attends private school,was
shocked. She was determined to help."I want
other kids to understand that if you see a
problem, you don't have to wait to be an adult
to fix it,"says Kapasi. She and a group of

skills to work to create a mobile app called
Food for Thought.Through the application,
parents will be able to pay for their own
children's meal and will be presented with an
option to donate 2-3 dollars to pay for a meal
of another student.Other donors will also be
able to donate money to help children get lunch
in their community.
One creative characteristic of the app is
that the receivers of the contributions will be
anonymous.To receive financial help,a family
will need only a recommendation from a school
administrator, and no one else has to know."I
want to make my platform an application that
all users feel no shame in using, says Kapasi.
"It astonished us that in one of the
wealthiest and most advanced countries in the
world there are still communities that are going
hungry.By giving parents an easy option,we
encourage their giving and raise their
awareness that there are students in their
children's school who are in need."Kapasi

Food waste is a serious problem.In 2010,
nearly 133 billion pounds worth of food was
transported to US landfills.Food waste is
truly a waste to all of humanity. That's
because when you throw out a rotten apple or a
moldy container of leftovers, you're not just
throwing away the food, but all the resources
that went into producing it.
Water plays a major role in food
production,and as a result,food waste
translates to a large amount of water wastage.
All foods have a water footprint, the direct and
indirect water that goes into producing a
certain food,although some footprints are
larger than others. In general, meats tend to
need the most water for production, primarily
because of the amount of food the animal
needs.Also,larger animals aren't as efficient
in terms of meat production as smaller animals
like chickens or turkeys, and the bigger beasts
therefore have a larger water footprint.
Food waste has environmental impacts,
too."If you put all the food waste into one
country,it would be the world's third largest
greenhouse gas emitter,says Brian Lipinski,
an associate in the World Resource Institute's
Food Program.Decomposing(分解)food that
makes its way into landfills releases methane
(甲烷),which is significantly more harmful to
the environment than carbon dioxide.
All is not lost, however. There are many
efforts underway to cut food loss at every
level. The US Department of Agriculture and
the Environmental Protection Agency recently
called for a 50 percent reduction in food waste
by 2030.Meanwhile,Portland launched a
citywide composting(堆制肥料)program a
few years ago.And at the retail(零售)level,
[每日格言]成功的信念在人脑中的作用就如闹钟,会
the former president of Trader Joe's recently
opened a store near Boston that sells surplus
food donated by grocery stores at low prices.
Still,waste can't be avoided.There's
never going to be some ideal or perfect way to
eliminate it all.Fortunately,change at any
level,whether it's as a supplier,retailer or
consumer, will help ease the impact of food
waste on natural resources.
8.Why is wasting food a waste of water
resources?
A.Food waste contains a lot of water.
B.Food waste causes water pollution.
C.Food production needs plenty of water.
D.Dealing with food waste consumes much
water.
9.How does food waste influence the environment?
A.It smells rather terrible.
B.It poisons the soil severely.
C.It carries a lot of bacteria.
D.It releases a greenhouse gas.
10.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Strategies for ensuring food safety.
B.Measures for reducing food waste.
C.Benefits of the composting program.
D.Causes of monitoring food production.
11.What does the author convey in the last
paragraph?
A.Better late than never.
B.Content is better than riches.
C.Many hands make light work.
D.Make hay while the sun shines.

A study led by the University of Eastern
Finland suggests that teenagers who engage in
active school transport (walking/cycling to or
from school at least once per week)and
leisure-time physical activity perform better at
secondary school than their inactive peers
龄人).Regular leisure-time physical activity
was also associated with lower possibilities of
school burnout(倦怠).The findings were
published in the European Journal of Public
Health.
在你需要时将你唤醒。
高二英语(配BSD版)
The relationship of physical activity and
academic achievement is complex.However,
previous studies have found that especially
school-based physical activity,such as physical
education,
can
improve
classroom
performance-particularly in mathematics.
Despite this, few studies have examined the
association between active school transport and
educational outcomes.
In the recently published study of over
34,000 teenagers,researchers observed that
active school transport was associated with
higher chances of high perceived academic
performance and self-reported competence in
academic skills.Being physically active before
school could,for example,enhance
concentration in class.The association was
even stronger for leisure-time physical activity.
Similar to previous studies,the relationship
between leisure-time physical activity and
mathematical skills stood out.
Leisure-time physical activity was also
inversely associated(负相关的)with school
burnout. As little as 30 minutes of weekly
activity was associated with 24%lower
possibilities of school burnout.Teenagers who
engaged in leisure-time physical activity for 4
to 6 hours a week had 46%lower possibilities
of school burnout compared to their physically
inactive peers.Both leisure-time physical
activity and active school transport were also
positively associated with school enjoyment.
"To the best of my knowledge, this was
the first large-scale study to examine the
association between physical activity and
school burnout among teenagers.Leisure-time
physical activity can be an effective way to
disconnect from schoolwork and the potential
stress related to it.If schools can increase the
amount of leisure-time physical activity among
youth,both learning and wellbeing benefits
can be significant,"said Juuso Jussila,a
Doctoral Researcher at the University of
Eastern Finland.

境,故选G。
4.F根据上文“Shop with intention. Some people buy items
because they're on sale. Some think it's necessary to stock
up on almost everything.Other people shop because it
makes them happy.(带着目的购物。有些人买东西是因

其他人购物是因为这让他们快乐。)”以及后文“After
momentary happiness, the items become part of the
mountain of stuff unwanted.(短暂的快乐过后,这些东西就变

clearly surprised."Are you here to run bases again?"he
joked.I stood tall,determined to prove myself."Coach,"I
said confidently,"I may not have the experience or the
equipment, but I have the passion to learn."The coach
paused for a moment and then nodded, allowing me to join
the team and giving me a borrowed glove.I caught an
impossibly high ball and enjoyed a real training I desired to
have for so long.
"Impressive catch!"my teammates cheered for my
per formance after the training. The coach, with a smile on
his face, approached me and said,"You've got some skills.
Keep pushing yourself and you'll surprise everyone."Their
words meant the world to me.As I stepped off the field that
day,I couldn't help but feel proud of myself.I decided to
reward myself for all the hard work and dedication.I would
buy a baseball glove I had always longed for since I was four
years old.
