Helen often sees homeless (无家可归的) people on the streets in her town. From a young age, she and her mother often give them sandwiches and water. Helen knows that fresh fruits and vegetables are not easy to get at food banks (食物银行). Homeless people usually get canned (罐装) or boxed food there. This gives her an idea.
“There is a garden in our backyard that we didn’t use,” she says. “I will ask my mother if I can grow food there for the homeless.” And her mum thinks it’s a good idea.
Now, Helen’s garden grows different fresh foods like strawberries, blueberries, and tomatoes. When the fruits and vegetables are ready, she picks, washes, and puts them into bags. Then she and her mother give the bags to people on the street or to a local (当地的) food bank. So far, Helen has given away (分发) more than 550 pounds of food! When they give out the food, they often meet the same homeless people many times. Helen learns their names and has talks with them.

①Labor (劳动) classes at school can help students be active and happy in life. At the same time, students can learn the meaning (意义) of labor. So from this September, students in middle school have one labor class a week.
②There are many interesting labor classes now. Students from a school in Chongqing have a class about catching fish in the river and learning about their habits. In Shanxi Province, students make tofu and also cook it. The labor classes make them feel happy. Some students also keep small animals at home like chickens. This helps students learn how to care for (照顾) living things and also make them more interested in biology (生物学).
③According to the new policy (政策), middle school students need to learn many skills (技能) in labor classes: clean their rooms and classrooms, pick proper (合适的) clothes for travel, cook three or four meals and take part in labor activities such as planting or fishing.
④Doing labor work is good for students. The students can get more self-control (自控), do better in school, and feel happier from it. Labor classes not only teach them important skills but also are a great way to relax during a busy school day. So which kind of labor skill do you want to learn most?
27.Which paragraphs (段落) tell us what skills students learn in the labor class?
A.①② B.②③ C.③④ D.①④

C.To show labor classes are important and good for students.
D.To tell us labor classes are different from biology.
D
Whether you’re preparing for an exam or trying to learn a new musical instrument or even trying to perfect a new sport, sleep may secretly help improve your memory.
Studies have actually told us that sleep is important for memory in at least three different ways. We know that you need sleep before learning to actually get your brain ready, almost like a dry sponge (海绵), ready to take in new information. And without sleep, the brain becomes “waterlogged” and can’t take in new information or create new memories properly. It’s not just important that you sleep before learning, you also need to sleep after learning to hit the save button on those new memories so that you don’t forget.
In fact, sleep helps protect and strengthen memories, cementing them into the brain’s neural networks (神经网络). Scientists are starting to understand how sleep helps with this process.
The first mechanism (机制) is a file-transfer (文件传输) process. And here, we can speak about two different structures within the brain. The first is called the hippocampus and it sits on the left and the right side of your brain. And you can think of the hippocampus almost like the informational inbox of your brain. It’s very good at receiving new memory files and holding onto them. The second structure that we can speak about is called the frontal cortex. It sits on top of your brain. And during deep sleep, there is this file-transfer mechanism. Think of the hippocampus like a USB stick and your cortex like the hard drive. And during the day, we’re going around and we’re collecting lots of files, but then during deep sleep at night, because of that limited storage ability, we have to transfer those files from the hippocampus over to the hard drive of the brain, the cortex. And that’s exactly one of the mechanisms that deep sleep seems to provide.
Scientists have discovered another mechanism that helps store those memories into the brain, called replay. In an experiment, they studied how rats learned to run around a maze (迷宫) by recording brain activity. As the rats ran through the maze, their brain cells reacted to different parts of the maze, creating a “memory signature” (记忆特征). Interestingly, when the rats fell asleep, their brains replayed this memory signature. However, during sleep, the replay happened almost 10 times faster than when the rats were awake. This process is thought to help strengthen and store the memory. This seems to be the second way in which sleep can actually strengthen memories.
The final way in which sleep is beneficial for memory is connection and organization. In fact, we’re now learning that sleep is much more powerful than we ever imagined. Sleep doesn’t just simply strengthen individual memories, sleep will actually cleverly interconnect new memories together. As a result, you wake up with a refreshed network of connections in your mind, allowing you to solve problems that seemed impossible before.
And this is probably the reason that you’ve never been told to stay awake on a problem. Instead, you’re told to sleep on a problem, and that’s exactly what the science teaches us.
30.How can we make the most of sleep to improve learning?
A.By emptying the brain right after learning.
B.By sleeping for at least eight hours every day.
C.By taking in more information before sleeping.
D.By getting enough sleep before and after learning.
31.What does the word “cementing” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Breaking. B.Storing. C.Changing. D.Shaping.
32.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The file-transfer mechanism works during the day.
B.The hippocampus interconnects memories together.
C.The cortex is where memories go during deep sleep.
D.The brain replays everything we notice when awake.
33.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The importance of enough sleep.
B.The science behind a sound sleep.
C.How sleep can strengthen our memories.
D.What we can do to improve our memories.

【答案】39.D 31.B 32.C 33.C

31.词句猜测题。根据“In fact, sleep helps protect and strengthen memories, cementing them into the brain’s neural networks.”可知,它表示“把记忆巩固到大脑神经网络中”,在此与Storing“储存”近义。故选B。
32.细节理解题。根据“And during deep sleep, there is this file-transfer mechanism. Think of the hippocampus like a USB stick and your cortex like the hard drive.
