“Total work” is a term first used by the German philosopher Josef Pieper after World War II. It refers to the process by which human beings are turned into workers and nothing else. Work becomes total when it is the center of all human life; when everything else serves work; when leisure, celebration and play begin to look like and then become work; when there is no part of life left beyond work; when people fully believe that we were born only to work; and when other ways of life, which existed before total work won out, completely disappear from our cultural memory.
What is so troubling about total work is not only that it causes unnecessary human suffering, but also that it removes the forms of playful contemplation concerned with our asking, pondering and answering the most basic questions of existence. First, there is always a sense of pressure, a feeling that there is always something that needs to be done right now. Second, one feels guilty whenever he is not as productive as possible.
The burden character of total work is marked by endless, restless activity, worry about the future, a feeling that life is too much to handle, troubling thoughts about missed chances, and guilt over the possibility of being lazy. In short, total work necessarily causes dukkha, a Buddhist term referring to the unsatisfactory nature of a life filled with suffering.
Besides causing suffering, total work blocks our access to higher levels of reality. What is lost in the world of total work is art’s showing of beauty, love’s pure joy, and philosophy’s sense of wonder. All of these require silence, stillness, and a true willingness to simply experience. If meaning is what allows us to connect with something greater than ourselves, then what is lost in a world of total work is the very possibility of experiencing meaning. What is lost is the search for why we are here.
24. Which of the following best reflects the feature of total work?
A. Work is considered as an important part of life.
B. People are devoted to pursuing their career goals.
C. Work almost dominates every aspect of human life.
D. People feel proud when they are highly productive.
25. What does the underlined word “dukkha” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. A constant sense of pressure.
B. A lasting state of eagerness.
C. A temporary feeling of regret.
D. A deep desire for achievement.
26. What can be inferred about the impact of total work on human experience?
A. It forces people to seek different meanings in life.
B. It makes people more productive and spiritually fulfilled.
C. It strengthens people’s connection with higher levels of reality.
D. It reduces the possibility of having precious spiritual experiences.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. How to Balance Work and Leisure
B. What is Lost in a World of Total Work
C. Say Goodbye to Work-Centered Existence
D. Total Work to Blame for Productivity Decline
C 25. A 26. D 27. B

根据第一段“‘Total work’ is a term first used by the German philosopher Josef Pieper after World War II.
根据第三段“The burden character of total work is marked by endless, restless activity, worry about the future, a feeling that life is too much to handle, troubling thoughts about missed chances, and guilt over the possibility of being lazy. In short, total work necessarily causes dukkha, a Buddhist term referring to the unsatisfactory nature of a life filled with suffering.
根据最有一段“Besides causing suffering, total work blocks our access to higher levels of reality. 【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最有一段“Besides causing suffering, total work blocks our access to higher levels of reality. B选项“What is Lost in a World of Total Work (在全盘劳作的世界里,我们失去了什么)”符合文章主旨,适合作为标题。
C
Almost every Monday morning, plenty of us can be found daydreaming about taking off and escaping the daily routine. Few of us, once we’re buried in grown up employment and adult responsibilities, have the courage to actually do it. But one couple did.
Josie Scott and Graeme Ramsey, based in New Zealand, decided to take a one-year vacation from their lives. Rather than committing to a full-time position as beach-goers or backpackers, they chose to volunteer in Ghana for a year, in a small village called Dzita.
Having stayed at MMT, a not-for-profit lodge that offers accommodation and helps the functioning of an NGO, Dream Big Ghana, which works to improve the public hygiene (卫生), education and health care for local people before, Josie knew how it worked and about the good it did with the local community. She then volunteered herself and Graeme to run the lodge for a year.
And so began a year of African adventure away from everything they were used to. They greeted guests and took bookings, cooked and cleaned, shopped and swam and finally become a part of this tiny village community.
One year on and Josie and Graeme are now back in New Zealand adjusting to life at home. The couple think they’ve got a lot from that experience, the most important of which is patience. “Time is viewed differently and so expecting things to run the same way as they do in New Zealand is going to lead to disappointment. Everything gets done in its own time, and that was a very valuable lesson to learn. People are also very friendly in Ghana, but it actually takes a long time to really get to know what’s going on. Being patient and building relationships slowly is very rewarding. Using what we have rather than what we think we need was another lesson. Living outside the city with few resources is a good way to learn to make good use of what’s around us.”
28. Why do we often fail to escape from the daily routine?
A. Because our kids are growing up.
B. Because we are not confident enough.
C. Because we have many duties to perform.
D. Because we are employed in big businesses.
29. What does the underlined word “lodge” mean in the third paragraph?
A. A small hotel. B. A charity foundation.
C. A royal fountain. D. A travel agency.
30. What did the couple do during their stay in Africa?
A. Go to different beaches. B. Set up their own company.
C. Hike with their backpacks. D. Work in the local community.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Patience and adapting to local rhythms are valuable lessons.
B. They found city life in New Zealand meaningless.
C. They will move to Ghana to work full-time.
D. Ghana’s way of life is more efficient than the other places.

根据第一段中“Almost every Monday morning, plenty of us can be found daydreaming about taking off and escaping the daily routine. Few of us, once we’re buried in grown up employment and adult responsibilities, have the courage to actually do it. (几乎每个星期一的早晨,我们中的许多人都会做着逃离日常生活的白日梦。一旦我们深陷成年人的工作和成年人的责任之中,很少有人有勇气真正去做这件事)”可知,我们常常无法逃离日常生活是因为我们有许多责任要履行。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“Having stayed at MMT, a not-for-profit lodge that offers accommodation... (曾住过MMT,一个提供住宿的非营利性lodge……)”中“stayed at MMT”和“that offers accommodation”可推知,lodge是指提供住宿的地方,类似于小旅馆。
根据第三段“Having stayed at MMT, a not-for-profit lodge that offers accommodation and helps the functioning of an NGO, Dream Big Ghana, which works to improve the public hygiene (卫生), education and health care for local people before, Josie knew how it worked and about the good it did with the local community. She then volunteered herself and Graeme to run the lodge for a year.(乔西此前曾入住过 MMT 民宿。这是一家非营利性民宿,既提供住宿,也协助非政府组织 “大梦加纳” 开展工作。该组织致力于改善当地民众的公共卫生、教育及医疗服务。因此乔西十分了解这家民宿的运营模式,也清楚它为当地社区带来的积极影响。随后,她主动和格雷姆一起报名,志愿运营这家民宿一年)”根据第四段中“And so began a year of African adventure away from everything they were used to. Everything gets done in its own time, and that was a very valuable lesson to learn. People are also very friendly in Ghana, but it actually takes a long time to really get to know what’s going on. Being patient and building relationships slowly is very rewarding.(对时间的看法不同,所以期望事情像在新西兰那样运作会导致失望。每件事都会在它该完成的时候完成,这是非常宝贵的一课。加纳人也非常友好,但要真正了解情况确实需要很长时间。保持耐心并慢慢建立关系是非常有意义的)”可推知,作者告诉我们的宝贵经验是要有耐心,每件事都会在它该完成的时候完成,要适应当地节奏。

For customers who don’t have the freedom to choose where they shop, technological advancements are making price discrimination (歧视) increasingly likely. Flexibility-based price discrimination allows companies to charge different people different prices for the same product or service, based on how easily they can walk away. When consumers can easily find better deals elsewhere, they hold the power. However, AI tools are allowing sellers to become increasingly expert at uncovering how much flexibility their consumers have, which raises serious concerns.
In a recent study, we examined how flexibility-based price discrimination affects a seller’s profitability in a competitive market, and studied how consumer welfare is affected. The findings demonstrated that companies that utilize consumer inflexibility are likely to boom, often at the expense of those with the least power to choose. They don’t just raise prices when customers aren’t able to easily switch to a competitor, for low-income consumers they reduce product quality as well. This double blow hits low-income consumers hard.
Dollar stores, for example, often serve low-income communities in smaller markets. When these retailers realize their customers have limited alternatives, they are less likely to keep prices low. Moreover, tests revealed the presence of poisonous components in colorfully labeled children’s products at American and Canadian dollar stores.
But this is only part of the story. When these same techniques are used to target wealthier consumers, it can result in positive social outcomes for them. In contrast, high-income consumers may see their product quality improve. This is because high-income consumers are willing and able to pay for the improved quality and technology-enabled price discrimination can enable the seller to satisfy their needs better.
The same thing happens with trade barriers and tariffs (关税). Product quality, price and income are known to be interconnected, with lower-income inflexible consumers suffering more than high-income consumers in the same situation. Any barriers that reduce consumer flexibility disproportionately harm low-income consumers, who are more likely to face lower-quality products as a result.
Our study provides valuable insights for both lawmakers and policymakers. It shows that new policies are necessary to protect vulnerable consumers with limited flexibility from price discrimination.
32. What does the underlined word “utilize” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Refer to. B. Depend on. C. Take advantage of. D. Get rid of.
33. What do companies tend to do when consumers lack purchase choices?
A. Expand product varieties. B. Lower prices to attract more customers.
C. Reduce product quality for low-income groups. D. Prioritize the needs of high-income consumers.
34. Why does the author mention dollar stores?
A. To show how companies draw on consumer inflexibility.
B. To highlight health risks for children in low-income areas.
C. To criticize their addition of harmful chemicals in products.
D. To compare product quality between different income groups.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward price discrimination?
A. Favourable. B. Skeptical. C. Objective. D. Disapproving.

根据第二段中“In a recent study, we examined how flexibility-based price discrimination affects a seller’s profitability in a competitive market, and studied how consumer welfare is affected.( 最近的一项研究探讨了基于灵活性的价格歧视如何影响竞争市场中卖家的盈利能力,以及对消费者福利的影响。)”以及划线单词句中“The findings demonstrated that companies that… consumer inflexibility are likely to boom, often at the expense of those with the least power to choose.(研究结果表明,那些……消费者缺乏灵活性的企业往往能够迅速发展,但通常是以牺牲最缺乏选择权的人群为代价。)”可知,此处指企业利用消费者缺乏选择灵活性的弱点来盈利。故可猜测划线单词utilize为“利用”的意思,和C选项Take advantage of“利用”意思一致。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“They don’t just raise prices when customers aren’t able to easily switch to a competitor, for low-income consumers they reduce product quality as well. This double blow hits low-income consumers hard.( 这些企业不仅在顾客难以转向竞争对手时抬高价格,对低收入消费者还会降低产品质量。这种双重打击对低收入群体造成了沉重打击。)”可知,当消费者缺乏购买选择时,企业通常会为低收入群体降低产品质量。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“The findings demonstrated that companies that utilize consumer inflexibility are likely to boom, often at the expense of those with the least power to choose.(研究结果表明,那些利用消费者缺乏灵活性的企业往往能够迅速发展,但通常是以牺牲最缺乏选择权的人群为代价。)”以及第三段“Dollar stores, for example, often serve low-income communities in smaller markets. When these retailers realize their customers have limited alternatives, they are less likely to keep prices low. Moreover, tests revealed the presence of poisonous components in colorfully labeled children’s products at American and Canadian dollar stores.(例如,美元商店通常服务于小市场的低收入社区。

故填where/whose。
故填including。
分析句子结构,that an Italian publisher asked to translate and publish it为宾语从句,空处同样引导宾语从句,陈述事实,不缺少成分和意义,用that引导宾语从句。故填that。
此处指代前文的“a man”,应用形容词性物主代词his修饰名词heart,与前文的“his head”形成对应,故填his。

Lucas had always been the quiet one in the family. While his younger sister, Lily, was outgoing and effortlessly charmed everyone at gatherings, Lucas often found himself in the background, a silent observer. At 16, he felt invisible, especially when it came to expressing his own thoughts and feelings. His family meant well, but they often spoke for him, assuming they knew what he was thinking.
This assumption became painfully clear during the planning for Grandpa’s 80th birthday party. The whole family gathered around the table, talking excitedly about party preparations, decorations, food and entertainment. “Lucas can help with the setup,” his aunt declared without looking at him. “And he can serve the cake,” his uncle added. Lucas opened his mouth to speak, to say he actually wanted to give a short speech, a tribute (致敬词) he had been secretly writing for weeks in his notebook. He wanted to tell everyone about the special fishing trips he and Grandpa had taken, the ones where he taught him to be patient, to listen, and to find strength in silence. But the words got stuck in his throat. His mother, noticing his hesitation, said gently, “Don’t worry, son. We’ll handle everything.”
That night, Lucas sat in his room, staring at his notebook. The speech felt like a secret part of him, locked away. He had always let others define his role — the quiet one, the helper. But this time felt different. He realized that if he never spoke up, no one would ever know the person he truly was. A new determination began to form inside him.
The day of the party arrived. The house was filled with laughter and the smell of home-cooked food. Grandpa, sitting in his favorite armchair, was surrounded by family. Lucas watched from the doorway, his heart pounding. He seized the folded piece of paper in his pocket. Everyone was having a good time. Would his small moment of bravery ruin it? He took a deep breath, remembering Grandpa’s words on their last fishing trip: “The bravest thing you can do, Lucas, is to be yourself.”

Just before the cake announcement, Lucas stepped forward, his voice trembling but clear. “Wait, please. I’d like to say something.” The room went quiet. He looked at Grandpa, not at the paper. “Grandpa taught me that silence isn’t empty — it’s full of things we’re brave enough to feel.” He spoke of their fishing trips, the misty mornings, and how Grandpa showed him patience and strength. He told them about learning to wait, to listen, and to find his own voice. His words came from the heart, each sentence stronger than the last. “So this is my tribute — not to your years, but to the moments you gave me.”
When he finished, Grandpa slowly rose from his chair. His eyes were wet as he walked over and put a hand on Lucas’s shoulder. “That,” he said softly, “was the most beautiful gift I’ve ever received.” The room erupted in applause, and Lily wiped her tears. Lucas felt a weight lift from his chest. Grandpa leaned close and whispered, “I’ve always known who you are. Now everyone else does too.” Lucas hugged him tightly, realizing that being seen wasn’t about being loud — it was about being true. For the first time, he felt not invisible, but seen.

D
